On December 14, 2023 Jimmy Soto and his cousin David Ayala were released from Stateville Correctional Center after a forty-two-year-long fight to prove their innocence. At the time of his release, Soto was the longest-serving wrongfully convicted prisoner in Illinois history. A Cook County judge vacated Soto’s sentence, stating that neither he nor Ayala received adequate counsel during the initial trial. Jimmy gives a detailed explanation of all the legal issues that were wrong with this case from the beginning and how it shouldn't have taken forty-two years to prove their innocence. Soto was convicted in 1981 after prosecutors said he committed a double murder of a young couple. Soto was convicted despite there being no eyewitnesses and no physical evidence tying him to the crime.
On this podcast Jimmy shares how life was growing up on the southside of Chicago. In a strong family oriented household were love and support for one another was a staple. He was always fond of learning, education and this helped him even during his time of incarceration. He ends up getting a job in the law library and begins studying the law for himself. He gains a reputation of being what some call a "jail house lawyer", but he prefers the term "prisoner advocate who fights for human rights." While incarcerated he helps many men get new trials, sentence reductions and some even get exonerated with his legal help. While he is helping others find freedom, he begins to fall into despair on why he can't help himself find the freedom he know he deserves and truly desires. He gets a letter in the mail one day from an unknown person, with a story that emphasizes that "God is always right, and always on time." On this podcast interview I am joined by Harry Peña, founder of "Life Impacters Foundation. (LIF)" He is also a partner of the Illinois Coalition to End Permanent Punishments. It was created as an organizing and campaign hub for people directly impacted by the criminal legal system to come together, build a movement, and lead and implement advocacy campaigns to end the impact of a criminal record following people long after incarceration. Harry spent 22 and a half years in prison.
He shares stories about his childhood that are truly heart wrenching. Here is a statement that he makes, that pretty much summarizes it all, "But being raised up in a house of violence, when the scripture says you train up a child in the way that he should go, and when he gets older, he'll never depart from it. Well, there are two spectrums to that. If you train a child to be a killer, he's going to be a killer."
On one occasion as a child, he witnesses his father violently beating on his mother and in that moment he picks up a kitchen knife and stabs his own father three times. This he recalls, was my first act of violence. This is just a sample of the various forms of abuse, torment and trauma that he will go on to experience which will create in him a hate for mankind in general.
This story delves into the transformative journey of overcoming traumatic pasts, gang life, and incarceration by finding redemption through faith, personal reflection, and dedication to advocacy. It emphasizes the importance of overcoming struggles, seeking justice, and supporting others in similar situations, ultimately working towards a brighter future free from permanent punishment and systemic barriers.

Luis Varela had a 31 year career as a Chicago Police Officer. He also served a total off 33 years between the Marines and Army Reserves were he served as a drill instructor. He grew up in the West Town neighborhood of Chicago. He grew up in an era of the late sixties and early seventy's were there was a greater racial divide within the communities of Chicago. Growing up he begins to see some of his friends heading down the wrong path and the consequences they begin to experience because of the wrong choices they are making. A neighbor introduces him to the neighborhood Boys & Girls club were he encounters mentors who begin to help and encourage him in many ways. Being bullied most of his young life he is drawn into sports like boxing and swimming there at the club. There he meets and sees a young Marine in full uniform and at the moment he says, "this is what a real Man looks like." He joins the Marines right after high school. He is home on leave one summer night sitting right in front of his parents home when all of a sudden he hears a woman start screaming right across the street. Her purse has just been stolen and the perpetrator is running away. Luis takes off after that man, catches him and ends up returning the purse to the woman. She is crying and so happy to have here purse back. This ends up becoming a decisive moment in his life were he acknowledges that he likes how this feels. To be able to help and protect his community. But being a police officer takes a toll on those who encounter all types of crimes and violence on a regular basis here in the city of Chicago. Many people don't know this but police officers have one of the highest rates of divorce and suicide in the country. Tune in to hear this real life story of a Chicago Police officer.

Joshuah Hernandez is currently scheduled for a boxing match on Saturday April 13th, 2024 at the Dome in Rosemont, IL. He has been boxing since the age of 5 years old. His dad was a professional boxer as well. Like many of us, his childhood had some rough patches along the way. Some of those things shaped him and molded him into the young man he is today. As a teenager he also finds success as a rapper alongside a really good friend of his. But success at such a young age brings division between the friends and it all comes to a sudden end. He is determined to do what ever it takes to get himself and his family ahead. Vowing to "never be broke and never to be alone." He gets himself through college by working and being focused on the goal of attaining his degree that he says he feels like he loses himself along the way. On the route to and from school he passes a building that he feels drawn to, like he knows he needs to step into this place. Without anyone inviting him, he decides to step foot into this building. Little did he know that this would change the trajectory of his entire life. Tune in to hear how he is now learning how to truly fight the good fight for your life.

"This will be your last time!" is the statement Bert hears spoken in his mind on the day he ends up committing a crime that will eventually land him behind bars with a 40 year sentence. Bert grew up in the Humboldt Park neighborhood on the North side of Chicago. He grew up in a loving home, with mom and dad in the picture. One day he sees his older brother come home after getting into a physical altercation with a stab wound to his head. After this incident Bert feels compelled to get involved into the lifestyle his older brother is in. He joins the same gang and the life of violence begins. At a young age death and destruction become the norm. In the 1990's the streets of Chicago were very violent. In response to some of his friends being murdered he goes and he retaliates. A young man ends up losing his life. There at the hospital investigating the crime is a police officer by the name of Marco David. He is the one that begins the investigation that will eventually lead Bert behind bars. Approximately 10 years into his prison sentence, Bert's dad asks him to add Marco David to his visitor list. He resists at first, because he recognizes that name from his police report, as one of the officers that helped place him behind bars. Bert eventually allows Marco to come visit him. One reason being is that Marco is also a Pastor at a church Bert's parents attend. On the first visit Marco feels compelled to share a word with Bert, something he feels that the LORD is leading him to share with him. He tells him, he doesn't know what this means, but he wants Bert to know that God is saying to him, "This will be your last time!"

This is an exclusive podcast interview with Chicago's very own David Ayala. David, along with his cousin Jimmy Soto, were recently exonerated after serving over 42 years in prison for a crime they didn't commit. They made history by becoming Illinois longest serving prison inmates to be then exonerated.
You will hear how I met David just last week by a chance encounter at a tattoo removal place. We started talking and were able to connect and set up this podcast interview a week later.
David grew up on the southwest side of Chicago in a neighborhood called "Little Village", "La Villita" or 26th street. You will hear him share his life story. From the fun times running around as a little kid, skitching on the back of cars in the winter, jumping from one garage roof to another for fun in in the summer, to then becoming one of Chicago's most notorious figures.
You will get an in-depth personal view of this man, his thoughts, emotions, and experiences. You will hear what things helped him remain hopeful, persevere and never give up despite having a life sentence without the possibility of parole. Today we do our first ever “on the road” in person podcast interview. Thanks to a generous donation from a co-worker of mine, I was able to purchase equipment to make this podcast possible. I traveled to Wheaton, Illinois to meet with Pastor Manny Mill from “Koinonia House National Ministries” at his home.
Pastor Manny’s life begins back in Cuba where as a young kid he sees Fidel Castro come into power. His family is finally able to flee Cuba after many years and they end up in Spain. A couple of years later they make their way to the United States and land in New Jersey. As a young man Manny begins to accomplish the “American Dream.” He gains the big three, "power, sex and money." Because of a shady business deal he finds himself being investigated by the F.B.I. He flees the country and ends up in Venezuela. While on the run in Venezuela, his mother becomes a born-again Christian and begins to pray for her son Manny. Through a series of events God grabs a hold of Manny and he decides to return back to the United States to face the music. He gets sentenced to three years behind bars. It is in prison that God begins to transform Manny's life and where the journey to the work he is doing today begins. You will be encouraged, challenged and prompted into action by this man's radical story of redemption.

There are two primary avenues through which KHNM seeks to assure that Christian neighbors coming out of prison are met at the prison gate: assist churches, groups or individuals in setting up a post-prison ministry discipleship home for Christians coming out of prison; equipping local churches to prepare to receive a Christian neighbor – matching at least one ex-prisoner to one local church.

After years of abuse, addiction, a desperate search for praise and approval, and living in unbearable pain and isolation, Rob Decker reached a breaking point that drove him to take drastic measures. After a failed sui--de attempt and a friend not giving up on him, Rob woke up alive with a new lease on life.
Rob has dedicated his life to helping others and taking the stigma out of recovery. He is very passionate about sharing his testimony with others and helping them break the chains of addiction through support and mentorship. He knows everyone is capable of turning their life around and he is eager to be a part of that process. He and his wife have three children and they reside in Colorado.

On this episode you will hear the first ever guest host on the Wrong To Strong Chicago Podcast. Julio Mercado steps into the studio to interview REZUM, a multi genre Christian artist. Listen to REZUM share about his life growing up with his mom in Oklahoma and traveling to see his father in Illinois. This back and forth has it's up and downs and he finds himself getting into trouble at an early age. Alcohol, drugs and physical violence becomes his M.O. This ends up landing him in jail on few different occasions. He ends up receiving probation for one such incident and then a few months later he ends up violating that probation on a similar charge. Behind bars, he begins to see God move in his life. At first things look like they are coincidences as he begins to see and receive answers to his prayers. He keeps trying to outrun God but finds himself running back into Him. Growing up in family of musicians and song writers, he has been writing songs since he was twelve. He now discovers that this is a God given gift, and that God is after him, to help turn his life around and to use his music to reach many for the Kingdom.

On October 26th, 2004 I had an encounter with God that changed my life forever. That day started me on a journey that ultimately leads to why it is I'm hosting this podcast today. My life went from darkness to light and from death to life. This is my story.
I had initially released this podcast interview a year ago in two parts. The episodes titled "Growing Up In Pilsen" part 1 and part 2. I decided to re-release this interview today in it's entirety. On here, my wife Ann interviews me on what it was like growing up in Pilsen, on the south west side of Chicago. From a strong family oriented upbringing, to experiencing tragedy and loss. Which led to a life of gangs, drugs, imprisonment and ultimately redemption. The cool part of this interview is that you get hear how God worked in the life of my wife as well and how ultimately she is the one that helps lead me to him. You get to hear certain life events explained through two different lenses and perspectives. A few people shared with me that they experienced numerous emotions listening to our story. There comes a time in one's life when God uses someone to speak into your life, encourage you, especially at a time when no one else does. Hassan Anderson played such a role in the life of JC Almanza, who is the founder of "Wrong To Strong." According to JC, Hassan was the first person to ever believe in his dream and in his vision. Interestingly enough, Hassan was JC's parole officer at the time.
Growing up in a bad part of New Jersey had exposed Hassan to crime, violence and murders at a very young age. He also remembers times when the only thing in the fridge was a ketchup bottle and he had to go ask the neighbors for some food for him and his sisters. Though his mom and dad were never together, his dad emphasized the importance of him getting an education. He ends up getting a scholarship and playing football at Rutgers. But through a series of bad choices he finds himself catching a criminal case at that time. She wanted to record a special Thanksgiving episode, so I joined her as a guest to discuss the importance of living a life full of gratitude and thankfulness. We talk about being thankful to God for who He is and all the blessings He gives to us. As believers , we are often urged throughout scripture to give thanks but I'll be the first to admit that my initial response in troubling times isn't one of thanksgiving. I'm learning that even in difficult and trying times God is there leading us and guiding us through such difficulties. He keeps us and gives us the strength to keep going and seeking Him. I was joined in studio by Jose Rodriguez for this weeks podcast interview. Jose grew up in the West Englewood neighborhood on the southside of Chicago. Being Hispanic and growing up in a predominantly African American neighborhood was rough for him and his siblings. His parents enrolled him in a different neighborhood school to try to make it better for them, but this led him into even more trouble. Street life becomes the norm and he finds himself being able to maneuver through the various neighborhoods and various gangs he encounters. He befriends some rival gang members and they are able to coincide respectfully at times and vouch for one another. Work, party life and violence is his routine. One day as he is kicking back watching T.V. his sister tells him, "God loves you, and He's coming for you!" This statement grabs his attention. He asks himself, "Is God going to kill me?" Little does he know, that the path he would find himself on, a path of crime and drug dealing, would lead him to an encounter with the One who was coming after him. On this podcast episode Jose M. Mendoza joins me to share how life was growing up on the southside of Chicago in the Brighton Park neighborhood. From the age of 3 months old his mom leaves him to his grandma to be raised by her. He never meets his father. Brighton Park was heavily gang infested and in the 7th grade he finds himself pulled in to that lifestyle. Alcohol and drugs begin to take over his life and gun violence soon follows. He finds himself constantly getting locked up, in and out of the juvenile system and county prison. Many years later he moves to Texas to escape the life he was leading out here but he is consumed by an alcohol & drug addiction. He finds himself homeless and hopeless until God steps in. I am joined on this week's podcast by Ignacio Gonzalez. He was born and raised on the southside of Chicago in a neighborhood named "Back of the Yards." His family was hardworking and loving. From a young age he is taught the value of hard work and service to his people and community by his father who was also a church deacon. He learns to maneuver through various Chicago gang neighborhoods on his way to and from school. After high school, he finds that college is harder than he expected and decides to join some of his buddies who were already enlisted in the Marines. This eventually puts him on a path that leads him into law enforcement and private contracting out in the middle east. He has a love hate relationship with the southside of Chicago which makes it easy for him to get away and travel the world.
After the loss of some of his friends, he finds that instead of mourning for them he turns to anger. At the time he is unaware that he is unable to process his emotions in a healthy manner which leads him to become physically ill and weak. This one strong, tough and self sufficient man finds himself crying out to God. He goes on a spiritual journey that leads him down many paths. Through a series of events and circumstances he finds that the City of Chicago is calling him back. That there is a lot of work for him to do in his community. Julio Mercado joins me on this week’s podcast episode. Julio grew up in the West Town neighborhood of Chicago. He was raised in a loving home with both his parents in the picture. His neighborhood is surrounded by gangs and drug dealing and early into his teen years he finds himself able to stay away from those things. Sports become an outlet for him and help keep him busy and out of trouble. One day on his way to the Boys & Girls Club he is confronted by gang members from the opposite side of where he lives. They question him about his gang affiliation and they are not convinced that he is not a gang member. A group of them decide to jump him and begin to beat him. After this encounter, Julio walks back to where he lives and joins his local neighborhood gang within hours of his beating. Full of anger and rage, a violent side of him is awakened and unleashed. He wages all out war on those who attacked him. This one moment for ever changes the course and destiny of his life. Frequent gun violence, beatings, deaths and drug dealing become the norm and he feels right at home in this environment. The devil grabbed a strong hold of this man and didn't want to let him go. On today's podcast episode we do our first ever group interview. I am joined on here today by two good brother's, Arturo Gamino and Cisco Terrazas. They were two of the first men I interviewed when I first started doing this almost a year ago. We reflect back on the beginning of this podcast journey and what events led to it's start.
Our main focus is on sharing what impact and effect the Word of God, the Bible, had in our lives. We are real and honest of we dismissed the Bible, we didn't want to hear about it or have anything to do with in our younger days.
Psalm 119:71 reads, "My suffering was good for me, for it taught me to pay attention to your decrees." God has a way of using trials, pain and suffering to get our attention and bring us closer to himself. We share what events, situations and scriptures really had an impact and brought change into our lives. Cleo Lewis was a military veteran who had just finished serving eight years in the air force. With a wife, kids and a mortgage to pay now, he is looking for a job that pays well and someone encourages him to become a police officer. He admits that he only joined because of the pay and not really in it to make a difference in the community. After a few years he ends up becoming an undercover police officer during the crack epidemic that hit America in the 1980's. On one such undercover mission, he believes he is meeting some local neighborhood drug dealers but ends being face to face with some upper level Columbian's. They become suspicious of him and ask him to take a hit of crack cocaine. His plan is to punch the guy in the face and run out of that house, that is until he hears the unmistakable sound of an AK-47 being bolted and being placed to the back of his head. He ends up having to take a hit of the crack cocaine. This one event changed his life forever. Tune in to hear how he went from air force veteran, distinguished police officer, to a drug addict, convicted felon, inmate and homeless on the streets of Phoenix, Arizona.

On this podcast episode I interview Pastor Rocky Vasquez. Rocky grew up on the lower west side of Chicago in a historic community named Pilsen. Around the age of nine he begins to ask his mom about his dad, "Who is he? Where is he?" He sees his friends spending time with their fathers and internally he desired to connect with his dad. He begins looking for love, looking to be accepted, looking for his identity and eventually this leads him towards the gangs in the early 80's.
His group of friends eventually become a core group which helped this particular gang expand not only in this community but also around the city of Chicago, suburbs and even other states. A life of crime, violence and imprisonment soon follow. His way of handling himself and others eventually lead him up into gang leadership.
But yet there is still a void internally inside of this man that he is unable to fill. He begins to call out to God and eventually decides he wants to turn his life around. While incarcerated he begins to draw close to God and begins to lead others to God as well. Unfortunately, upon his release he finds himself living back inside of the same neighborhood he grew up in and his friends come calling upon him for his help. He tries to hold out for about three months. But eventually he gets drawn back into the gang life. He comes to find out that "It's hard to walk away when you're a gang leader."
Tune in to hear to how eventually he couldn't outrun the calling God had upon his life. He is now leading people to the only gang that is gonna be standing at the end of the day. The biggest gang that there ever will be is "God's gang."

On this podcast episode I sit down and talk to Pastor John LaTorre. John grew up with his mother and family in a small town in the state of Connecticut. At the age of seven he meets his father and begins to spend the summers with him out in Queens, New York. As a young man he longs to connect with his father and yearns to learn what it means to be a man. At the age of 11 he begins to smoke weed with his dad. This opens the door to a life of drug addiction and alcoholism. As a teenager he begins to deal drugs in order to fund his drug addiction. Things get really bad when he decides to rob a partner of his and has to go on the run. He gets deeper and deeper into darkness and by now he is a full blown heroin addict. His family encourage & push him to connect with an organization called "Teen Challenge." At this point in his life he finds himself miserable, suicidal, lost and with no hope in life. Tune in to hear what happens in this man's life when he hears God's voice calling out to him, "Why don't you give Me a chance? I can heal you."

In this podcast episode Shawn Rae joins me all the way from Colorado Springs, CO. Shawn grew up on the outskirts of Chicago in various neighboring suburbs. From a child he begins to experience pain and trauma at the hands of an abusive step father. At the age of nine he is already running away from home. He ends up in the streets hanging out with young men who come from similar home structures. He catches a criminal case as a teenager, serves some time and gets released into a halfway house in one of Chicago's most dangerous neighborhoods at that time, Pilsen. This just cements him deeper into the gang & streetlife.
Crime, drug addiction and violence follow him no matter what state he moves to. His grandmother would tell him, "No matter where you go, there you are."

U.S. Marine veteran Jimmy Sutherland shares his life story in this podcast interview. How life was growing up in East Chicago, Indiana. From wanting to get away from home as soon as he turned 18. He was physically strong and big on the outside but inside there was a lot of hurt, anger and depression that no one knew about. He tries to numb his pain with alcohol and women but that can only satisfy for so long. He thinks getting married and settling down can fix and change him but things only get worse.
One night, he clearly hears the devil tell him "to just end it, what is he waiting for. That he is a loser as a man, family man." In this podcast interview I sit down with an old co-worker of mine, Alex Ramos. He shares his story of growing up on the North side of Chicago and then moving out to the suburbs to get away from all the gang violence and drug dealing in his neighborhood. But surprisingly he finds it easier to get involved in these things while out there in the suburbs. Through friends and family he get pulled into the criminal lifestyle. While I was working with him from 2013-2018 I would try to minister to him and counsel him but he didn't want to hear anything about God back then. He experiences the loss of a relationship and his job around the same time and seems like his life is going under. One day he gets on his knees and begins to pray, this begins to change everything. He shares his story about how growing up he didn't want anything to do with God or religion based on things he experienced at home & at church. As a teenager he ends up joinin a gang. On this episode I am proud to feature my wife, Ann Calvillo' s, very own podcast, "Her Scars Tell A Story." The mission behind her podcast is to provide a platform for ordinary women from different cultures, all ages and backgrounds to share their stories of how their scars point to Jesus. She started her podcast back in November of 2022 and this is her latest release.
In this episode, she sits down with her guest Sarah Gonzalez. Sarah's father used to minister to the inmates in Cook County Jail and used to bring her along with him when she was really young. When her father grew ill and passed away suddenly, Sarah found herself angry at God and not wanting anything to do with Him. She grew distant from her mother and would later go through her own journey back to God. She strayed far from the Lord but her mother never gave up praying for her. She is now currently serving and ministering to the prisoners in Cook County jail just like her father used to. Tune in to hear Sarah's powerful story of God's redeeming grace.

In this Podcast I interview Pastor Mynor Vasquez from North Phoenix Baptist Church out in Phoenix, AZ. He shares how life was growing up in Guatemala. His father and mother leave to the United States in hopes for a better future and leave him and his little brother behind with his grandpa and grandma. After many years away his father returns and decides to bring them back to U.S. with him. There was a huge culture shock when they arrive in Phoenix but there was also a clash with his father who tries to bring correction into his life even though there wasn't a relationship established between them. He experiences bullying because he doesn't speak English. He becomes bitter and resentful which lead him to rebel. He begins to find joy and relief in all the wrong things. His family takes him to church but he says he fakes his way through it, portraying an image of a good kid, while his lifestyle is totally contrary to the way he knows God is calling him to live. A couple of times he even attempts taking his own life. Tune in to hear what happens to him that totally turns his life around.

Michael Buhrman finds himself behind bars after he and an accomplice commit an armed carjacking. He has an ankle monitoring device placed on him after posting bail. He cuts the device off and goes on the run from the law with his accomplice. After a few stops in different states, they make it into Mexico and then eventually find themselves in Caracas, Venezuela, living as international fugitives. The authorities first catch up with his accomplice who begins to cooperate and testify against Michael. The accomplice accepts a plea deal, and Michael, while still on the run in Venezuela, gets sentenced in absentia, to 40 years in prison. After one year the authorities finally catch Michael as well and have him brought back to the United States. Michael begins to plan on how he is going to take his own life, because he cannot see himself spending twenty years behind bars. But God had other plans for him. In this podcast episode I interview Steve Richardson. He shares about his upbringing in a small country town in Macedonia, Ohio. He grew up having an alcoholic and abusive stepfather that his mom and siblings would need to escape from in the middle of the night to find a safe place to stay. He also experiences verbal abuse from his stepmother in the form humiliation. This builds up anger & resentment which leads to rebellion that he carries with him for most of his life. He turns to alcohol and drugs which he continues using even as he is serving four years in the Navy. He finds himself in trouble in the military and even as he returns back home. He is married and divorced within a short period of time. Then he finds himself deep inside the world of a biker gang. His life is heading deeper and deeper into darkness until he experiences something that turns his life around. He is currently an over the road truck driver and has a heart to minister to his fellow truck drivers with a ministry which he operates from the back of his semi truck. In this podcast I interview Dre Rodriguez. He was born and raised in Pilsen, on the southwest side of Chicago. After serving 10 years in prison, Dre, a former street gang member, decided that his reintegration into society would consist of preventing gang-involved youth from making some of the same bad decisions that almost cost him his life. He didn't know then that some of the hardest trials and experiences of his life would prepare him and propel him to do the work he is doing today. He is now a filmmaker/activist/youth mentor. In 2019, Dre founded "Luv City Media", a Chicago-based production company that gives at-risk youth a creative outlet to express themselves. He has shot numerous music videos with local artists who otherwise would not be able to afford a quality production video. Dre teaches youth all about video production and hires them to work on projects where they will either be in front of or behind the camera. Dre continues to partner with other community leaders and organizations to continue to bring resources and opportunities to local youth. Dre hopes to inspire young people to believe in their talents and push them to pursue the greatness he sees in them.

In this podcast interview, Victor shares about the male figures in his life that he begins to lose at a very young age. From having an uncle who he was really close to die in a car accident. To losing his father to imprisonment soon after. This left him hurt, alone, confused and with no clear direction in life. He vowed to never do what what his father had done to him but finds himself later on in life repeating the same things. He grew up right across the street from the projects in the outskirts of Houston, Texas. He tells the story of surviving a horrific car accident in which he has to be medi-vac to the hospital with life threatening injuries. My guest Roger C. shares his story and the events that shaped his life growing up in the "Back of the Yards" neighborhood on the South Side of Chicago. He witnessed a lot of violence as a youth, which eventually led him to become a perpetrator and victim of violence himself. He ends up doing time in prison and struggles to do right upon his release. He witnesses first hand God transform his older brother from a violent man, drug addict to becoming a man of God. And Roger begins to question if maybe God can do that in his life as well?
