Blakey Johnston made waves (literally) across Australia and the world when he broke the world record for the longest surf in March this year. Surfing for 40 hours, a total of 707 waves and raising a total of nearly $450,000 for The Chumpy Pullin Foundation.

Having grown up surfing from the age of 6, Blakey lives and breathes the ocean. He owns and runs the Cronulla Surfing Academy in NSW where he teaches people how to surf.

In this podcast we chat surfing, mental health and of course, Blakey’s experience surfing for 40 hours straight! He dives into what motivated him to break the record and the mental and physical challenges he faced leading up to, and during the big surf.

Dr Steven Duhig is a Lecturer and Researcher at Griffith University and Strength and Conditioning Coach for the Burleigh Bears.

After obtaining his PhD in 2016 with a primary research focus on hamstring strain injuries, Dr. Duhig's research now centers around investigating the relationships between muscle architecture and injury risk, as well as performance improvement and injury prevention in various sports such as soccer, rugby league, swimming, track and field, football, and surfing.

In this episode we deep dive into Steve’s clinical mind and cover the technical aspects of hamstring injury, tibialis training and shin splints, whilst also covering different modalities of training and their effect on performance and injury prevention.

The ultimate goal of Dr. Duhig's research is to provide practical applications in the field of sport and exercise that directly improves clinical practice and athlete outcomes.

In this week's episode of the podcast, we had the pleasure of chatting with Xantheia Pennisi, a 24-year-old go-getter who shared with us her journey to becoming a professional cliff diver traveling the world. 

Xantheia started out as a gymnast in her childhood and later became a springboard/platform diver in her early teens. However, it wasn't until she discovered cliff diving that she found her true passion. 

Xantheia has competed in multiple Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series events and is the youngest female permanent diver in 2023. Xantheia loves everything from the craziness and challenge of cliff diving to the beautiful locations she gets to travel to compete.

A fractured spine won’t stop this Ironwoman

Called a Triple Crown, Georgia won the Coolangatta Gold, a Nutri-Grain Iron Series and an Australian Ironwoman title all within the same season. 

She has taken 28 individual Aussie Gold medals, 3 consecutive Ironwoman wins and 5 open swim titles and was recently inducted into the SLSA Hall of Fame at only 26 years old.

In this episode Georgia talks about her love for the sport, mental toughness, superstitions and how she had her eyes set on her 4th consecutive Ironwoman title (something that’s never been done before) before having to pull out due to injury.

She goes into detail about her ordeal which included having to be rescued from the ocean and fracturing her spine in three areas.

Ellie Salthouse is a professional Triathlete here in Australian and is one of the best  in the entire world. We are beyond stoked to have had the opportunity to chat with her on the show and to get an insight into what it takes to be a full time triathlete.

She has been in the sport since the young age of 11  where she got picked up by a coach who saw her potential early on. Ellie turned pro in 2010 when she was just 17 years old.

In this episode we dive deep into what it takes to be a professional triathlete, the training involved, the importance rest plays, mental discipline and what she loads up on prior to racing (shout out to pizza and Nutella on toast!)

We dive into the battles Ellie's faced during her career, including taking a break from the sport to get on top of an eating disorder and to work out whether or not being a pro triathlete was what she wanted to do.

She shares the advice she would give to her younger self which we're sure many of you can relate to.

Abdullah Zeinab is an ultra cyclist from the Gold Coast. He first got into cycling in 2016 when he decided to bike from Melbourne to Adelaide to visit his mum. 

From here, he took his cycling to the next level by cycling Sydney to Perth (5,500km), around America (5,700km) and most recently becoming the first person to finish the 2,750km Rhino Run race across South Africa and Namibia.

In this episode Abdullah discusses the mental challenges he experienced while being on the bike, how it's given him the space he needed to tap into himself on a deeper level and stripping away limiting beliefs that stood in his way.

He gives us insight into the Rhino Race and how he didn't sleep for four days straight which led to him blacking out and forgetting who he was and what he was doing.

Harbert, also known as @the.flowing.dutchman and founder of @dutchflowacademy, is a knowledgeable instructor of maces, kettlebells, and clubs from the Netherlands.

Harbert became obsessed with the mace, aka steel mace, or macebell, and this led him to pursue the history of the mace by documenting its origins in India, where he has recently returned from.

Vanessa (better known as V) is a running coach and endurance athlete who loves pushing her mind and body to the limits!

Sean Bell is an ultra runner who has completed approximately 100 marathons, 2x 24 hour runs, won the Bali Hope 84km Ultra and this year ran 4000km’s from Cairns to Melbourne in 60 days! (60-80km per day)

**Jansen Andre is a plant based personal chef, social media influencer and ultra endurance athlete.

HGG first got in touch with Jans last year after catching wind that he and Jordan Chenery (a previous podcast guest) were going to run 100 miles to raise money for charity, and we got involved by setting up aid stations along the way.

This year, Jans took to Griffith University Athletics track and ran 625 laps, for a total of 250km in 31.5 hours, on 10 minutes sleep! A truly superhuman effort.

A professional Ironwoman at just seventeen, Bonnie Hancock has competed in 9 Nutri-Grain Ironwoman Series, represented Australia, completed a Bachelor of Nutrition and Dietetics and has now shifted her focus to surf ski paddling, coaching and mentoring.

Bonnie recently paddled 12,700km around Australia on a surf ski, breaking four world records in the process, including the fastest and youngest person to circumnavigate Australia by paddle. 

During her journey around Australia she beat the record for the most distance paddled in 24 hours by a woman, and then a week after returning to mainland, she went back out to sea to break the men's world record too!

She tells us of her experience with the constant dangers of the ocean, hypothermia, crippled hands and sea sickness plus close encounters with sharks, and crocodiles that followed her through the night.

Bonnie did all of this to raise money for a charity close to her heart, the not-for-profit mental fitness foundation Gotcha4Life.

Bonnie is an incredible human and this is likely one of the most fascinating and thrilling stories you will ever hear.
