Clarify your message before you amplify it to build a solid foundation for your brand.
Have you ever noticed, when you ask a service-based entrepreneur what they do, and they hesitate, with a one to two second glance up, before they answer? It's a subtle move, though if you notice the hesitation, it's a giveaway that they aren't exactly clear on their message. In some cases, their hesitation may make you hesitant to do business with them.
Here are the 4 steps to conquer the "look up":
1. GET CLEAR ON YOUR MESSAGE
To keep it simple, answer these questions
- What problem do you solve In 3 to 5 words:
- How do you solve it, what is your value proposition?
- What is your superpower or differentiating factor? You are not a commodity, so tell me why
- How do I work with you?
As an example,
I'm Cathy, a brand strategist and producer
- problem I solve: fear, overwhelm and being stuck (to build your brand)
- How do I solve it? with a 5 step proprietary process, the Brandmaker Method, through 1:1 strategy, courses and done for you work.
- My superpower? A 360 approach, with success in sales, media, producing, video, youtube and more, I help you fill in the gaps as you build your brand with a 360 approach to brand building.
- To work with me, book a free brand strategy call, and we will determine what you need most help with and customize a plan for you.
2. PRACTICE
Practice speaking about your brand. The more you practice, the more you will get clear. Record yourself using your phone, watch it. delete it, make adjustments and keep going. The more you practice, the more it will evolve. The experts who make it seem easy, have probably put in years of lpractice.
3. AMPLIFY
Share your message in person and online.
Once you are clear, spread your message. A clear, concise, consistent message wins.
4. TEST. GET FEEDBACK. ITERATE.
Just as comedians work out their jokes in small crowds, then tweak them after they see what works and what doesn't, do this with your brand message. Try a few options, get feedback and iterate. It's a process.
TAKE ACTION
Conquer the "look up". Get clear on your brand message and practice saying it with out having to think or hesitate before you say it. it's a process we all go through.

Go behind the camera with Producer Cathy and Jill Canning to talk about humor in business.
Producer Cathy, Founder of Brandmaker Media and Jill Canning, Founder of Jill Beth Travel @JillBethTravels talk behind the scenes about using humor in business. Cathy and Jill met to interview Howard Hellams for episode 6, "Five ways to use humor in business" then had a conversation about a few concerns Jill has in using humor for her business.
Jill wants to use humor in her content, though is not sure where to draw the line between infusing humor and being taken serious enough to be hired for business.
The main takeaway is to find humor in everyday life and make it relatable to your audience, rather than post something that would not make sense to your audience.

Gina Stryker created a sustainable soup business with a mission by pursuing a passion she had for cooking soup.
Gina shares a few valuable tips with you on how to start a business with a purpose. Gina asked me to film her for a service announcement to FedEx employees, so I asked her to share a few tips with you on her journey as an entrepreneur.
1. Just do it
Jump in with both feet and do it. .
2. Start local
Start with the people that know you and start selling it. Go to your local farmer's market if it's a food product or skin product.
3. Research packaging
Go to a local store, buy things off the shelf, spread them on a table and write down things you like. It works!
4. Be persistent
Don't take no. If you believe it and have the faith, keep taking the steps forward.
Gina heard 1000's of no's. Each no is heart wrenching for your "baby" you're putting out into the world. It takes persistence. The one yes will change everything.
5. Include a call to action
If you are going to start a company, think about how it's going to affect the world, and make the choices to make it total societal impact., Make every aspect of your company reflect sustainable decisions, to the earth and people.
It took Gina 18 months to develop online packaging and 0 waste to ship Gina Cucina soups. Gina worked with Fed Ex on packaging that would allow her to safely ship glass across the country and also be sustainable.
6. Be mission-based
Gina worked with Fed Ex nationwide to help with her mission to stop trafficking.

Walker and I recorded this in 2019 while I was filming him for a project. I included this as a bonus episode, because it is the very first time I did a podcast interview. Walker at the time challenged me to step out from behind the camera to in front of the camera.
Walker shares a few nuggets that may be beneficial to you, and he talks about the path of changing careers that led him to where he is today.
One interesting thing to point out is that while filming that day, Walker connected me to a branding agency and icon makers in New York City 2MarketMedia that provide similar services as me, though on a grander scale. I ended up having a meeting with the owners, and they helped name me Brandmaker Media, so that is how I got my name. You never know what connections you will make by reaching out or working with people.
