Elite law firms, investment banks and management consulting firms in the U.S. are known for their grueling hours, low odds of promotion and personnel practices that push out employees who do not advance. While most people begin their careers in these institutions, they leave within several years. These environments can be especially difficult for Black professionals, who exit more quickly and receive far fewer promotions than their white counterparts.
On this episode of Dimensions of Diversity, host Lloyd Freeman welcomes Kevin Woodson, sociologist, attorney, University of Richmond law professor and author of the new book, “The Black Ceiling: How Race Still Matters in the Elite Workplace.”
During their conversation, Lloyd and Kevin share their experiences with the so-called “black ceiling,” how organizations set visible and invisible barriers for many Black professionals, and why the journey to success as a person of color in the legal industry, while improving, is still an uphill battle for many. Kevin also shares the concept of “racial discomfort,” defined as the general unease that many Black professionals have experienced in predominantly white workspaces.

Over the last 18 months, it has been difficult to sustain community within the workplace. There is less opportunity to see the familiar faces of coworkers as we have become accustomed to seeing colleagues over video chats rather than bumping into them at the office. The overload of virtual meetings and conference calls have created a weaker bond between employees, and has also made it more difficult for employees to feel engaged. As calendars become congested with numerous meetings and the hybrid work environment persists, it is necessary for companies to not lose sight of the importance of inclusivity.
On this episode of Dimensions of Diversity, host Lloyd Freeman is joined by Aneesh Mehta and Rebecca Benavides from Microsoft, who share their best practices for conducting inclusive and engaging meetings within a hybrid work environment. The two speakers will provide insight into Microsoft’s research-driven guide on how to run inclusive meetings and share tips on how to engage employees. Paula is accustomed to living a fast-paced life as she constantly dedicates herself to navigating her clients’ challenges and works every day to leave a significant impact on the world around her. With such passion for the workforce, Paula was familiar with saying “yes” to everyone, but what she was uncomfortable with was saying “yes” to herself. This past summer, Paula made a decision that was difficult at first, one that many might find surreal for a legal professional: she took a two-month sabbatical. In this episode, Paula and Lloyd examine the trajectory of the past year and how it played a role in Paula’s decision. The two will also discuss the benefits that proper reflection-periods can bring to the workplace, and how taking time for yourself can actually amplify your work upon your return.

It is evident that the pandemic has permanently influenced how we do business. The blurring of the work-life balance has fostered a new type of environment that is rather inconsistent. With some employees working remotely and others returning to the office, it is important for companies to adapt and continue to make inclusivity a priority. As we enter the next phase of the pandemic, it is essential for businesses to accommodate, communicate, promote inclusive work environments, and properly mitigate potential biases.

In every workplace around America, there’s a conversation around how to structure effective mentoring matches. It’s no secret that those who have the benefit of a mentor often attain higher and more equitable salaries, they’re better positioned for promotions and tend to move from satisfaction to engagement within the workplace. But, finding that mentor, cultivating a relationship and sustaining that match can prove difficult, particularly for those individuals from underrepresented backgrounds.
Our guest for this episode is, Dr. Marcus Lambert, Associate Vice President for Research Strategy and Operations at SUNY Downstate Medical Center. He has conducted research and published thought leadership on this topic and other areas that increase diversity and inclusion.
Over 3 million Americans are living with a disability. Many of those conditions are very apparent to us. You’ll see some individuals using a wheelchair. Others may require the assistance of a service animal. But, our everyday ableism does not always respect those who are living with invisible disabilities—those that we cannot see or easily ascertain. These individuals, and the diversity they bring to the workplace, demands respect and is protect by laws such as the Americans with Disabilities Act.
On this episode of Dimensions of Diversity, host Lloyd Freeman is joined by Crystal West Edwards, a principal at Porzio Bromberg & Newman where she specializes in elder and disability law. The two spend time talking about how we can all better understand invisible disabilities.

The pharmaceutical industry, like many others, has room for improvement when it comes to diversity. Most recent studies show that approximately 1/3 of the top 50 pharma companies have no women on their board and only 8% of board seats are held by ethnically diverse directors, compared with 14% of the Fortune 500 overall. But there are signs that the industry is heading in the right direction by focusing more on diversity. Civica is an example, with women making up about half of the company’s leadership team, the board of directors and leading critical parts of their business.
On this episode of Dimensions of Diversity, host Lloyd Freeman talks to Jennifer Spalding, General Counsel and Chief Compliance Officer at Civica. The two discuss the need for improvement in diversity within the Pharma space and what Spalding and Civica are doing at her company to make a leading difference.

For people in underrepresented or marginalized groups, microaggressions, microassaults, microinsults, and microinvalidations are too often experienced. And the resulting effect can be harmful. Individuals may stop speaking up, stop taking risks, experience decreases in productivity, quit jobs and in the most egregious example, file discrimination complaints.

When you hear the words diversity, equity and inclusion, white male is probably not the first thing that comes to mind. In fact, white male leaders offer an important, and perhaps less heard, voice in discussions about transforming organizational culture to support the success of all diverse talent. This advocacy journey is not always linear, but white male allies play a critical role in providing mentorship, resources and opportunity to make their organizations—and leaders—more diverse and inclusive.

Women in corporate America continue to break glass ceilings, but female talent at C-suite level is still underrepresented. In fact, when it comes to Compliance Officers, just 1/3 are women.
On this episode of Dimensions of Diversity, host Lloyd Freeman is joined by Kathy Gaddes, Executive Vice President and Chief Compliance Officer for AmerisourceBergen. Gaddes assumed her current role in October 2018 after serving as Executive Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer since 2016. She has been with AmerisourceBergen since 2011.
Freeman and Gaddes discuss the challenges women face in climbing the corporate ladder in the law field, one traditionally dominated by men. They also discuss the risks women take in their jobs compared to men, and what Gaddes has done in her career to advance, with advice for those trying to follow her path.

Host Lloyd Freeman is joined by Professor Wendy Greene of Drexel University in Philadelphia to examine the law and effects of racial discrimination against African descendants’ natural hair in the workplace.
Greene is the first tenured African American woman on the Drexel University Thomas R. Kline School of Law faculty and has devoted her professional life’s work to advancing racial, color, and gender equity in workplaces and beyond. Her 2008 article, “Title VII: What’s Hair (and Other Race-Base Characteristics) Got to Do with It?”, is being adopted in history-making state and federal legislation known as the C.R.O.W.N. Acts (Creating a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair Acts). These will be the first laws in the nation to expressly recognize race discrimination is inclusive of the discrimination African descendants’ encounter based upon their natural and protective hairstyles such as afros, twists, locs, and braids.
Greene’s legal scholarship and public advocacy, which explores how constructions of identity inform and constrain anti-discrimination law, have generated civil rights protections for victims of discrimination throughout the United States.
Greene is one of the world’s leading legal experts on this global civil rights issue and founder of the #FreeTheHair campaign, she is currently writing her first book, #FreeTheHair: Locking Black Hair to Civil Rights Movements, with the University of California, Berkeley Press.
