"Life is 10% what happens to you and 90% how you respond" -Charles Swindoll
While many leadership programs teach you what to do, the 7 levels of leadership focus on attitude.
Our leadership can be either anabolic (build up) or catabolic (break down), and this attitude is not only felt by us but those around us. We can choose to move from simply reacting to life (catabolic) and proactively elevating to the higher levels of leadership (anabolic). It is important to remember that it is not inherently bad to experience the catabolic emotions, but simply to acknowledge that may be where we are.
7 Levels:
- Powerlessness: "I lose"
- Conflict: "I win because you lose"
- Tolerance: "I win, and if you win great!"
- Service: "You win"
- Opportunity: "Win-Win"
- Synergy
- Co-Creation

We have all had that experience of wanting to pursue a goal, but we just don't feeling like putting in the work. Our mind tell us "yes" but our emotions tell us "no."
Understanding the cycle of meaning is fundamental for getting our emotions in line with our minds, and ultimately understanding what is really holding us back:
- Stimulus: A situation happens
- Story: Based on the situation, we tell ourselves a story
- Emotion: Based on the story, we feel a particular way about the situation
- Action: We will act according to the emotion
We go through this cycle many different times every day. The key here is recognizing the stories and limiting beliefs that we have. These tend to be the things that are really holding us back. The more personal the limiting belief is, the more difficult it will be to overcome.
We are not defined by our circumstances or our beliefs, but as humans we have the capacity to choose to overcome them.

When considering our dreams, we often have a lack of clarity and direction for where we want to go.
The Three Steps:
- Dream Big: We are so absorbed in watching others' stories on TV, but why don't we take the time to dream in High Definition for our lives?
- Examine What Is Stopping You Now: What is holding you back from gaining clarity or moving toward your dream? It's usually a thought or belief about ourselves or the world that holds us back.
- Prayer: Pray about why we have a desire for a dream to begin with. Pray for God to shape your goals and dreams.

If you haven't had a chance to listen to Episode 2, I encourage you to listen here before listening to this one. That episode gives you the structure for the hero's journey as I share my story.
My goal with this episode is for you to learn who I am and also encourage you to reflect on how God has directed your own heroic life journey.
How does the hero's journey apply to your life?
- Ordinary person (the hero) living an ordinary life receives a call to adventure into an extraordinary world
- Refuses the call
- Crossing the threshold
- Given Supernatural aid
- Road of trials
- Upon victory, blessing is bestowed upon the others

Stories are powerful. Every culture at all places at all times have stories. Stories are powerful because our lives are stories.
Many stories, like Star Wars, have a common formula that Joseph Campbell outlines in his book The Hero with a Thousand Faces.
Campbell outlines about 20 plot points, but I just want to highlight a few:
- Ordinary person (the hero) living an ordinary life receives a call to adventure into an extraordinary world
- Refuses the call
- Crossing the threshold
- Given Supernatural aid
- Road of trials
- Upon victory, blessing is bestowed upon the others
This same formula can be followed in the Lord of the Rings, Lion King, Harry Potter, the Karate Kid, Aladdin, the Hunger Games, Captain America, or really any of the Avengers origin stories.
This is all interesting, but it gets far more interesting when we apply the hero's journey to our own lives. As Christians, the hero's journey is God's plan for humanity.
