The voice of EMS is brought to you by One EMS.
Laverne Hardwick comes to talk about some changes to the National Registry that are proposed and how we are getting mixed messages about accreditation for educators. We discuss from the ground up what that looks like for the students coming into the field, discuss what it means to be in the field, and how accreditation plays into it.ย
As we do the conversation really blends the everyday life/job of the medic with educational processes and how to plan for your future.ย

Charles was excited to meet and interview Gwen Flowers-Taylor at the GEMSA conference. She is an active (at the time of recording) commissioner in Spaulding County. Before serving her community Gwen served in the military for 8 years and had a career as a Registered Nurse. ย
"I was surprised that anyone in government would sit down and talk with me on the spot. It became evident very quickly why Gwen was comfortable doing so. You need to watch or listen to find out for yourself what I discovered. What impressed me most is that Gwen focuses on treating people as human beings first and that's what will make this world better." ~ Charles McFall, Host

"It was great to meet Ronnie and get to know him. While he and I didn't see eye to eye about the EMT-R program we were able to discuss it together. That is what One EMS is all about - discussing what we believe will work and understanding a disagreement never means we are enemies." ~ Charles McFall

At the 2021 Georgia EMS Association Providers and Educators conference, One EMS made a huge splash! Charles got to sit down and catch up with Chad Black, the President of GEMSA currently. The four questions that were asked at the conference were 1) What do you love about EMS, 2) What is something that has changed in EMS during your career that was positive, 3) What is something that needs to change in EMS, and 4) How can One EMS add our voice to yours? The answers definitively varied from interview to interview. Here we get some insight on what motivates Chad, why he is so driven to provide a retirement program, and some history of EMS.
"Sitting down with Chad again was interesting. It had been a few years since our last discussion and it was good to pick up the conversation again. This interview was first thing Sunday as the conference opened and felt like my first cup of coffee in the morning. Familiar and gets me going for the day. It got me eager for the rest of the interviews throughout the conference." ~ Charles

Charles had the opportunity to sit down with Richard Johnson of Wayne County EMS. During this interview, we get an insight into some of the history and changes that have happened over the years, the challenges of rural ems, and how Richard has successfully used an on-call system to keep his trucks staffed. ย ย
"When the chief said 'when you work for someone else there are two answers to give - Yes Ma'am/Sir or I quit.' I knew it could be taken many ways. For me, I understood it immediately. When we bring our skills to the table for someone else to use (like an employer) they get to choose how to use those talents to the benefit of the company. I believe we lose sight of the fact that we contribute to a whole and sometimes those goals align with ours and sometimes they don't." ย

Summer Patterson got into the field at almost the exact time that our host Charles McFall did and he locks in on the shared experiences. One of the biggest messages that came from talking with Summer was that of perspective. She wants to make a way for others and to do that she challenges them to have a plan. Only after you have a plan can you then weigh your options for career advancement expertly. Too many times in the field do we simply look at the (many times tiny) financial gain that we will get by jumping to another employer. When we fail to consider what possible unknowns come with that change we are doing ourselves and our career a disservice.
"I was very inspired and energized by talking with Summer. Having similar experiences coming into the field and similar choices to improve ourselves was refreshing." ~ Charles McFall

Christina jumped into the business TEMS Consultants at the equivalent of being a mailroom clerk and learned the EMS Billing business every step of the way. She brings insight to those of us in the field as to why documentation is important, and insights to those of us running the businesses on why it is imperative to do billing right. In this interview, Christina talks about what she has learned going through Medicare audits, what you should look for in a specialized company like EMS billing, and explains how Medicare sets its rules and then changes them. It is a roller coaster ride of discovery (who knew there is a medicare exclusion list for emt's???) entertainment, and education.ย

"The only stupid question is the one not asked and people are not asking."
Susan Dasher is the civilian that is as important to Bryan County Fire & Ems as much as the Emt's are. She is the right hand of the chiefs making sure the day-to-day administration of the office flows smoothly. During this interview, Susan talks about how civilians have a misconception of what really goes on in the field of public safety. Her unique position of seeing the service from the outside and in gives her a different perspective that can help bring everyone together to make a better life in the service.ย
When she isn't in the office she loves gardening as well as camping and Kayaking. Her love of traveling to different places and seeing things off the beaten path, basically getting off the interstate helps her love the controlled chaos of her job each day.
