You can find this lesson, and 30 others, in 31 Days of Women from Scripture Vol 1

Lessons from Sarah

In scripture we read of Sarai, whose name was changed by God to Sarah. "Sarai" in the Hebrew means "princess". "Sarah" means "noblewoman". The change points back to the change in her husband's name, from Abram to Abraham. This woman is becoming mother to a nation of people. In essence, God is making her and Abraham the King and Queen of a new dynasty - a spiritual dynasty.

Sarah, for those professing to follow Christ, is OUR mother, in spirit. She represents our freedom from the bondage of sin (Gal. 4:21-31). 1 Peter 3:6 says, "just as Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord, and you have become her children if you do what is right without being frightened by any fear." (NASB) Other translations say "whose daughters you are" (NKJV, KJV). God wants us to be like her. He wants the apple to not fall far from the tree, so to speak.

So, how do we become like Sarah? Study this lesson and learn about her. Yes, she was a great woman. She was a woman with struggles - unable to bear children for her husband. She made bad decisions based on her emotions. But she made GOOD decisions, and she was such a wife to Abraham that God tells all wives to imitate her.

Explore Sarah's life in this lesson, then come back and share what your favorite lesson from the study.

Enjoy!

There are many examples of God using circumstances to accomplish His will. What I mean by that is there is nothing we can do that will get in the way of God accomplishing His will. What we do ourselves may not be His will, but He will use the outcome to meet His purposes. In Romans 9:3-13, Paul makes this very point. He is telling the Roman Christians that God has adopted the Gentiles along with the Jews. There were many teachers who were saying that only Jews could be Christians because they were descended from Abraham. In verses 7-9 we read, "nor are they all children because they are Abraham's descendants, but: 'through Isaac your descendants will be named.' That is, it is not the children of the flesh who are the children of God, but the children of the promise are regarded as descendants. For this is the word of promise: 'At this time I will come, and Sarah shall have a son.'" It was not the blood, or the flesh, that decided the relationship with God. It was the PROMISE that God made that determined who the children of God would be.

1 Corinthians 1:18-31 teaches about the wisdom of the world versus the wisdom of God. Over and over men think that God's way is foolishness, when it really is wise. It did not make sense to the Jews that Gentiles could be included, because their "wisdom" was not spiritual - it was physical. Sarah is an example for us of God using circumstances to accomplish His will in ways that men just do not understand at first.

In 1 Peter 3:5-6 women are told to be like Sarah, "For in this way [adorning oneself with a gentle and quiet spirit] in former times the holy women also, who hoped in God, used to adorn themselves, being submissive to their own husbands; just as Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord, and you have become her children if you do what is right without being frightened by any fear." Her adornment, her jewelry of choice, was a gentle and quiet spirit, being willing to recognize and submit to the authority of her husband. She is lauded in Hebrews 11:11 for having the faith to be with her husband, while being "beyond child-bearing", so that she could conceive her promised son. (No, sex is not only for the "younger" people.) She did not give up on that aspect of her marriage when it did not, literally, bear fruit.

This woman was respectful and full of strong faith. But, Sarah did NOT always have good days!

With two different men the Lord had to protect her reputation as a "one man woman" so the lineage of the promised son was not in question. First with the Pharaoh of Egypt (Gen. 12:10-20) when she was 65 years old, and again with Abimelech the king of Gerar (Gen. 20:1-18) when she was 89 years old. Sarah went along with Abraham's half-truth and did not tell these men she was Abraham's wife. Even though the men were mistaken in what they knew, she was still Abraham's wife, and they did not have a right to her. Both men go to great lengths to make sure others are aware that Sarah's virtue was intact (Gen. 12:20; Gen. 20:14-16) Sarah did not make the right choices here, she kept silent because of Abraham's fears (Gen. 20:11). His fears allowed her to be put into a situation that was not good for her. Good thing God protected everyone!

It was going to matter whether or not the world knew for sure who sired Isaac. God would not allow Abraham's and Sarah's poor decisions to get in the way of that. He kept her reputation for her when she and her husband were not being careful with it themselves. As women today, even though we are not appointed to bear a child of promise like Isaac, we need to be aware that our reputation is important to the Lord and it should be important to us!

This does not make a point about Sarah, but I love in Genesis 20:3 where God tells Abimelech in a dream, "Behold, you are a dead man because of the woman whom you have taken, for she is married." Can you imagine being asleep and having that said to you in a dream? That would wake you up! Who says the Bible is dry reading? God is the Master of drama!

Also, I note her age at each time, because our society has us believing that women of 65 or 89 are not to be considered desirable or beautiful. Supposedly they are past that time of their life. Not so! A woman who is found to be beautiful in this time of life is said to be "amazingly youthful looking". We need to start recognizing our natural beauty at whatever age! We need to be caring for ourselves in such a way that we ARE able to have these blessings far into our later years. I am afraid that we have denied ourselves a great deal of LIFE while on this earth because we have given things up that ought not to have been given up.

Now, in the middle of all of this, Sarah got it into her head that the way for Abraham to have that son of promise would be for a servant woman to bear his child and Sarah claim it as her own (Gen. 16:1-2). Notice verse 2 says, "And Abram listened to the voice of Sarai." Does that remind you of Genesis 3:17? Abraham had a choice here as much as Sarah did. They both failed to make the correct one. The obvious problem here is that God fulfills His promises - men do not fulfill them for Him. Ishmael would be born of Hagar, but God would not accept him. God protected Ishmael and made him a great nation (Gen. 16:7-14; Gen. 25:12-18), he just was not the nation of promise.

Have you ever considered that all of the turmoil in the Middle East began with Sarah's decision? Ishmael's people became the Arabs to the East of Israel. We are still watching their family rivalry today! Our decisions NEVER affect ONLY ourselves. Every decision we make, good, bad, or indifferent is going to make a difference in someone else's life as well as our own. Be careful what you do!

We learn a bit about Sarah through her dealings with Hagar. Sarah was impatient about the son that would fulfill the promise. When Hagar despises Sarah because Hagar was able to carry a child for Abraham and Sarah was not - Sarah first turns to blame Abraham. He tells her this is her affair not his (again, sounding like Adam and Eve) and to deal with Hagar as she sees fit. So Sarah proceeds to deal so harshly with Hagar that Hagar runs away. Hagar trusts God enough to obey Him and return to submit to Sarah. This put she and Ishmael back under Abraham's protection. Oddly, we do not hear how Sarah responds to her return. But when Ishmael is around fourteen years old, after the birth of Isaac, Sarah is very quick to remove Ishmael because she saw him "mocking" or playing. She does not seem to have moved beyond her frustration with the situation she had created, even after 14 years! She is in her nineties now, and still bearing a grudge. God used her moment of unpleasantness as a vehicle to get Ishmael out of the way for Isaac, but it did not mean her behavior was right. Psalm 27:14 says, "Wait for the Lord; Be strong and let your heart take courage; Yes, wait for the Lord." Sarah forgot to wait.

Sarah lived until she was 120 years old. Isaac will be 30 years old at this time. Nothing is told to us of her mothering. We know that her husband mourned and wept for her after she died (Gen. 23:1-2). Ten years later Isaac marries Rebekah and only then "thus Isaac was comforted after his mother's death." (Gen. 24:67). She was a woman who was loved by her husband and her son. That says a great deal about her. Her moments of selfishness and bitterness with Hagar were not her every day. They were moments when she did not have herself in check. Can you sympathize with that? I sure can. I can also be hopeful in the knowledge that despite those bad days - and they were such that God chose to share them with us - Sarah is one I am to imitate.

Remember how God summed up Sarah's life (Hebrews 11:11; 1 Peter 3:1-6). Sarah is an example to us of many things, but one of the most important is God keeping His promises. This is a thread that runs from Genesis through Revelation. It is brought to fruition in Christ's death and resurrection. We need to understand and KNOW this concept. GOD KEEPS HIS PROMISES. We see in Galatians 4:21-31 how God uses Sarah and Hagar to make this point, and to drive home the FREEDOM found in His promise of salvation through Jesus Christ. In verse 23, Ishmael is said to be a son "according to the flesh" and Isaac is the son "through the promise". Hagar's children go on to remain in slavery, while Sarah's children are free. Freedom is found in doing things God's way, in His time, not our own. Bondage is the only thing found in holding to something other than God's will for us in Christ. So CHOOSE to be a child of Sarah - the FREE woman - be dressed in subjection with a gentle and quiet spirit, and in this way begin to put on the beauty that God finds "precious"!

Enjoy!

What are lessons do you see in Sarah’s life? Is there one that can apply to your life today? Start a conversation by sharing your thoughts in the comments.

“Seth” means “compensation”. Eve acknowledged that God had given her a son to make up for the loss of Abel when Cain killed him. Failing to Learn the Lesson

Matthew 23:34-36

“Therefore, behold, I am sending you prophets and wise men and scribes; some of them you will kill and crucify, and some of them you will scourge in your synagogues, and persecute from city to city, so that upon you may fall the guilt of all the righteous blood shed on earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah, the son of Berechiah, whom you murdered between the temple and the altar. Truly I say to you, all those things will come upon this generation.”

The Jews of Jesus’ day had a learning problem. They simply would not learn from the history of their own people.

Matthew 23 (and Luke 11) contains a speech Jesus gives to the crowd about the failures of their spiritual leaders. These leaders set themselves in place of Moses by adding to and re-interpreting the law Moses had been given by God. In verse 4 He says, “They tie up heavy burdens and lay them on men’s shoulders, but they themselves are unwilling to move them with so much as a finger.”

The scribes and Pharisees were guilty of making it harder for people to be obedient to the Lord! Their motivation was to build a reputation in the eyes of men; they weren’t worried about what God thought. Their actions showed they didn’t really expect God to show up in any significant way.

As Solomon says in the book of Ecclesiastes, “there is nothing new under the sun” (Eccl. 1:9).

Last week we talked about the danger of becoming stagnant in our faith. Those in Zephaniah’s day had come to believe that God would respond to them with neither “good or evil”. Sound familiar? The Jews in the first century were behaving the same way!

Let’s see if we can find some more examples of the same lesson pattern.

The Lesson is Repeated Throughout History

Judah in the days of Micah

We get a glimpse of God teaching Judah about needing to learn from history in the prophets.Let’s look at Micah for a minute. In Micah 6 God gives Micah a vision to share with the people. In this message, God is being both advocate and judge for the people. He is pleading their case and declaring their indictment before the mountains (Micah 6:1-2). After explaining how the Lord God has always worked to make their burdens lighter, the picture shows the accused asking “what else can we do?”

Here is what the accused thought could be offered:(Micah 6:6-7)

  • Burnt offerings, better yet with yearling calves?

  • Or instead, thousands of rams?

  • What about ten thousand rivers of oil?

  • Or, maybe sacrifice my firstborn for my rebellious acts? The fruit of my body for the sin of my soul.

The accused acts as though they’ve already done enough. They act as though God is demanding too much of them. They CANNOT do more than what they’ve done, because all of the offerings beyond the first are more than any person could afford or accomplish in a lifetime.

See God’s answer in Micah 6:8:

“He has told you, O man, what is good; And what does Yahweh require of you but to do justice, to love lovingkindness, and to walk humbly with your God?” (LSB)

The accused was looking to earthly efforts to correct his problem. God said He wants men to be just toward one another, love lovingkindness (can you hear Psalm 136?), and walk humbly with God.

In the beginning with Cain and Abel

Go back to the beginning. Read Cain’s story in Genesis 4. What was the problem? Did God take issue with Cain’s sacrifice or was it his attitude about it? Three things show us his attitude was what resulted in a sacrifice that was not accepted by God.

  • In Gen. 4:7 God says that Cain’s desires will move him to “not do well” and Cain needs to master those desires.

  • Hebrews 11:4 says that Abel’s actions were driven by his faith, the implication being that Cain’s actions were NOT driven by faith.

  • 1 John 3:12 tells us Cain “was of the evil one”. His deeds were evil and his brother’s were righteous.

Cain wasn’t offering sacrifices because he was trying to walk with God. His lack of humility when called out by God proves that. He wanted what he chose to offer to be counted as good enough because he offered it. Abel was focused on a better country (Heb. 11:16) and Cain was focused on his status in his earthly life.

What was God’s answer to Cain’s problems? “If you do well, will not your countenance be lifted up? And if you do not do well, sin is crouching at your door; and its desire is for you, but you must master it.” (Gen. 4:7). Cain needed to master whatever was inside of him that was willing to follow what was not good instead of doing the right thing.

Let’s look at one more.

The Destruction of King Saul’s Legacy

In 1 Samuel 15 we have the time when King Saul fails to obey God’s commands about destroying Amalek.

God shares why He wants Amalek destroyed - because this is their punishment for how the Amalekites treated Israel when they came out of Egypt and were on their way to Canaan (1 Sam. 15:2). Saul is meant to be acting as God’s sword of retribution, but Saul has other ideas.

Saul defeats the Amalekites in battle, but he chooses to save King Agag and the best of “all that was good” (1 Sam. 15:9). He and the people “were not willing to destroy them utterly”. See? - “not willing” equals a heart problem that created an action that was a problem.

King Saul then proceeds to build a monument to himself and go on his merry way. When confronted by Samuel about the noise from “all that was good”, Saul says, “but the people wanted to make a sacrifice to the Lord your God”; “but the rest we have utterly destroyed.” Not only does Saul claim to believe he has obeyed God (1 Sam. 15:13, 20-21) he doesn’t hesitate to blame the people and make excuses when his wrong is pointed out - twice.

Their desire to make a sacrifice to God did not negate the disobedience in how they acquired the sacrifice.

Samuel knows their heart wasn’t right (1 Sam.15:17-19). The lesson Saul and the people weren’t getting was that God wants people with a heart for obedience more than sacrifices of “all that was good”.

The thing is, this is the second time Saul has failed to learn this lesson! Back in 1 Samuel 13 Saul wanted to make a sacrifice to calm the fears of the people and keep his army around him for the next fight(1 Sam. 13:5-9). Instead of waiting for Samuel to show up, Saul offered the sacrifice himself! His disobedience lost him a lasting legacy of kings of his household. The second offense caused him to lose being king himself.

See The Thread Throughout History

Pull on the thread these stories have in common.

In all instances the people were people who offered worship to God and justice was missing from their interactions with their fellow man. Israel would repeat this pattern over and over again in their history, and we still do it today.

The people in the stories wanted what they chose to offer to God to be enough. They did not take into consideration what God actually wanted from them.

Cain and Abel both came to sacrifice to God. Abel did so by faith and was counted as righteous, Cain did not.

King Saul led the people in offering sacrifices because of what they wanted in the moment. They decided what was good to offer to God - even though He had already declared He wanted everything destroyed. God saw nothing “that was good” in the spoils from the defeat of Amalek. They were fruits of sin, not firstfruits to be offered for sacrifice.

By the time of the prophets, over and over again God tells them He cannot stand their sacrifices because their lack of obedience in other things makes the sacrifices meaningless. When you have time, take a walk through these references and see how long the thread of obedience and justice grows between them all.

Isaiah 1:10-17 What does God want from them?

Learn to do good; Seek justice, reprove the ruthless, defend the orphan, plead for the widow.

Jeremiah 7:16-26 What did God want from them?

But this is what I commanded them, saying,”Obey My voice, and I will be your God, and you will be My people; and you will walk in all the way which I command you, that it may be well with you.”

Hosea 6:1-11 What did God want from them?

For I delight in loyalty rather than sacrifice, and in the knowledge of God rather than burnt offerings.

Amos 5:21-23 What did God want from them?

“But let justice roll down like waters and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream.”

Micah 6:1-8 What did God want from them?

“He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, to love lovingkindness, and to walk humbly with your God?”

The book of Zephaniah Yes, the whole book. It’s only three chapters. What did God want from them?

Zephaniah 2:3; “Seek the Lord, all you humble of the earth who have carried out His ordinances; Seek righteousness, seek humility. Perhaps you will be hidden in the day of the Lord’s anger.”

This is just a handful of references from the prophets! There are many more. (Hmm, I sense a scripture writing plan building here.)

Do you see the lesson they all failed to learn?

The Lesson That Still Matters

Fortunately, there are examples of people who did get it and they shared the secret with us in positive ways.

In Psalm 51:14-17 David understood that, “The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, You will not despise.”

Proverb 21:2-3 declares the lesson this way, “Every man’s way is right in his own eyes, But the Lord weighs the hearts. To do righteousness and justice is desired by the Lord more than sacrifice.”

The scribes and Pharisees Jesus was talking about were ones who had failed to learn the lesson (Mt. 23:23). One scribe, though, was able to understand it, and Jesus said this knowledge meant he was “not far from the kingdom of God”.

After Jesus declares the two commandments that are foremost in Mark 12:28-31, one scribe agrees and sums up his understanding this way;

…”He is One, and there is no one else besides Him; and to love Him with all the heart and with all the understanding and with all the strength, and to love one’s neighbor as himself, is much more than all burnt offerings and sacrifices.”

Actions do matter, of course, but they matter more when they reflect what’s going on in your heart. God wants them to reflect a love for Him and a desire to show it to others.

Now, what will you do with the lesson?

In Season 5 study along as Angela explores the lives of the Men & Women from Scripture: Learning to Live from the Great Cloud of Witnesses.

In today’s episode spend some time considering Abel and the lessons from his short story.

“Abel” means “breath” or “vapour”. It is translated as “vapor” in Proverbs 21:6, “vain” in Proverbs 31:30 and “vanity” and “vanities” in Ecclesiastes 1:2. Was Abel’s name given as a prophecy to the length of his life? I have no idea - but it is a fun connection in a world where the meanings of names often make a statement! The reality is his life was short-lived. His reputation, however, was not.

Today’s episode takes a walk through all the scriptures that talk about Abel to see how God saw him and his efforts while he was living. Abel is a lesson in the power of a reputation.

Being Stagnant in Spirit

Through a study of Zephaniah recently, I was struck by this comment from the Lord.

”It will come about at that time that I will search Jerusalem with lamps, and I will punish the men who are stagnant in spirit, who say in their hearts ‘The Lord will not do good or evil!’” Zephaniah 1:12 NASB95

God says that those who are “stagnant in spirit” do not believe God will react to their doings in any way! God won’t care one way or the other about their deeds or attitudes toward their fellow man.

Considering that faith is defined by our coming to God believing that “He is and that He is a rewarder of those who seek Him” (Heb. 11:6). These people who have become “stagnant in spirit” have lost the latter part of their faith. They acknowledge God, but they don’t acknowledge His authority and power over His creation!

Can you and I be in danger of becoming stagnant in this way?

What does it mean to be stagnant?

Strong’s defines the original word as meaning “to shrink, i.e. thicken (as unracked wine, curdled milk, clouded sky, frozen water): congeal, curdle, dark, settle.”

Consider how different translations worded the English for this idea -

For “men who are stagnant in spirit” in the NASB95,

KJV uses “men who are settled on their lees” (“lees” means “dregs or sediment, related to alcoholic beverages)

NKJV says “men who are settled in complacency”

NIV says “those who are complacent, who are like wine left on its dregs”

and the AMP uses “men who [like old wine] are stagnant in spirit”.

God understood people knew about the leavings of food or alcohol when left alone. Think about things not being tended. That’s what “wine left on its dregs” brings to mind for me. Something that hasn’t had the impurities removed or hasn’t been finished in its processing. It has just been left there.

We all know what happens to milk when you leave it sitting on the counter. We know what gravy does when left to cool. What keeps these things “good”? Stirring, warming - using them for their intended purpose.

Ponds that become stagnated do so because there is no, or very little, flow to the water. There is no movement. A river stays clean when it flows well. It becomes poisoned when it is blocked and junk is allowed to accumulate in one place. Our spirit - the part of us that responds to God - is no different!

Keep things moving!

Other imagery in scripture points to this concept of still vs moving. Growth implies movement. It is the opposite of stagnant.

Hebrews 5:11-12 reads, “Concerning him [Jesus] we have much to say, and it is hard to explain, since you have become dull of hearing. For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you have need again for someone to teach you the elementary principles of the oracles of God, and you have come to need milk and not solid food.”

The Hebrews had become “dull of hearing” about Jesus because they were looking back to the Old Law for their salvation. Their growth had not only stopped, it was dying. They needed to be fed again with simple messages because they were not able to process the more complicated ones the writer of the book originally wanted to teach them.

In the admonition, there is hope though!

If we get stuck, we can begin again with the basics and work back up toward “solid food”.

This is where DILIGENCE comes in - because it is that effort to keep moving that inches us forward in our growth with the Lord.

The Hebrew writer points to it Hebrews 10:19-12:2 (I will let you go read it.) Endurance is what the Hebrew brethren needed and the writer points them to the “great cloud of witnesses” from the history of Israel to show how that endurance is found.

Do you want to build a tower of encouragement, a wall of protection to help avoid becoming stagnant?

Dive into those stories of people who struggled to endure but kept their eyes fixed on a better country.

Last week we talked about allowing the steady drum of Psalm 136 to drive trust in God and the promises He has kept into our hearts. Start there.

Read a Psalm.

Read about ONE of the people mentioned in Hebrews 11.

Read the whole story of ONE of the events Philip mentions in his sermon in Acts 7.

If you’re feeling sluggish in your faith, don’t look to yourself to pick yourself up out of it. LOOK TO THE LORD!

Where will you focus your eyes and your energy today?

In today’s episode spend some time considering Cain from Genesis 4 and the lessons you could learn. Other verses included in the study are Hebrews 11:4; 1 John 3:1-12; Jude 1:5-16

In Jude 1:11, “the way of Cain” is referred to as the path a group of false teachers were following. Those who followed the “way of Cain” were described as men who “revile the things which they do not understand; and the things which they know by instinct…by these they are destroyed”. Today’s episode takes a look at what God chose to share about Cain’s life. God’s commentary makes it clear Cain is not an example to be followed, but rather one to be avoided. As we strive to learn from the “great cloud of witnesses”, let’s take lessons to heart about how NOT to follow Yahweh, God the Father.

Share your observations, thoughts, and questions in the comments! Keep the conversation going.

Seeing God’s Hand in the World Around Us

As Spring is slowly making its way here in the Northern Hemisphere, I have been reminded of how nature points us to God.

Romans 1:20 says, “for since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so they are without excuse.”

The context of Romans 1 is about mankind knowing full well what the “natural” way of things are but turning away from it to fulfill their own desires. But the truth stands as a rock for us to lean on - we learn about God when we observe the things that He has made.

They don’t teach us everything - because we still need to know about the way to salvation. BUT they teach us WHO is the One capable of providing that access to salvation instead of destruction.

Psalm 136

Now take a look at Psalm 136.

If you aren’t feeling confident about God’s hand in your life, personally, read Psalm 136. I encourage you to read it out loud.

The power of repetition of ONE truth drives home the knowledge of all the things God has done.

The Psalmist wanted to get across ONE truth -

“For His lovingkindness is everlasting”

Over and over the writer connects this truth to things we take for granted, forget, or don’t think about enough.

Try writing the Psalm out.

Think about the sections - God’s wonders, God’s Power over the enemies of Israel, and God’s Provision

What does it mean to you to know that God overthrew the Egyptians? That He overthrew the Egyptians to allow Israel to leave slavery? Does it remind you that this was a fulfillment of prophecy and promise?

Over 400 years after Jacob’s family found salvation in Egypt by God’s provision (Joseph), God led them out again as another salvation. All of this to bring them to Canaan, which is another promise and prophecy that was fulfilled many generations after they were first made.

Build on what the Psalm says further by doing a threading study - Find as many of the events mentioned as you can, where they happened in the story of God’s Salvation. Note those references in the margins next to each verse.

Visually, this reminds you that each of those events really happened. Add the references to the prophecies and promises, and you again have a visual of a page FULL of God’s promises being KEPT.

That knowledge is what Peter talks about in 2 Peter 1:2-4.

It is what Hebrews 10 - 12:2 shows us moved believers to endure for something greater, “a better country, that is, a heavenly one”. It is knowledge that motivate you too.

The Psalm is a Thanksgiving to God the Father Who is Faithful.

Why is He faithful? Because “His lovingkindness is everlasting”.

Give thanks to Yahweh, for He is good,

For His lovingkindness endures forever.

Give thanks to the God of gods,

For His lovingkindness endures forever.

Give thanks to the Lord of lords,

For His lovingkindness endures forever.

To Him who alone does great wonders,

For His lovingkindness endures forever;

To Him who made the heavens with skill,

For His lovingkindness endures forever;

To Him who spread out the earth above the waters,

For His lovingkindness endures forever;

To Him who made the great lights,

For His lovingkindness endures forever:

The sun to rule by day,

For His lovingkindness endures forever,

The moon and stars to rule by night,

For His lovingkindness endures forever.

To Him who struck the Egyptians through their firstborn,

For His lovingkindness endures forever,

Then brought Israel out from their midst,

For His lovingkindness endures forever,

With a strong hand and an outstretched arm,

For His lovingkindness endures forever.

To Him who divided the ]Red Sea in two,

For His lovingkindness endures forever,

And made Israel pass through the midst of it,

For His lovingkindness endures forever,

But He overthrew Pharaoh and his army in the ]Red Sea,

For His lovingkindness endures forever.

To Him who led His people through the wilderness,

For His lovingkindness endures forever;

To Him who struck great kings,

For His lovingkindness endures forever,

And killed mighty kings,

For His lovingkindness endures forever:

Sihon, king of the Amorites,

For His lovingkindness endures forever,

And Og, king of Bashan,

For His lovingkindness endures forever,

And gave their land as an inheritance,

For His lovingkindness endures forever,

Even an inheritance to Israel His servant,

For His lovingkindness endures forever.

Who remembered us in our low estate,

For His lovingkindness endures forever,

And has snatched us from our adversaries,

For His lovingkindness endures forever;

Who gives food to all flesh,

For His lovingkindness endures forever.

Give thanks to the God of heaven,

For His lovingkindness endures forever.

What do you see in God’s creation today?

Share your thoughts in the comments!

Enjoy!

My Three Favorite Verses to Share with New Wives

Note: This post was originally published in 2016. I’ve brought it over to join the content here at the new home of The Diligent Woman.

The title says this is advice for “new wives”, which is true, but as with all of God’s word, theses verses have value to all of us in one way or another. Single, married, widowed, male or female. So, please don’t stop reading just because you are not a “new wife”.

Over the past few years a lovely tradition has come about whenever young couples get married.

As you walk into the bridal shower a new Bible is on a table. There are highlighters, paper book marks, and pens. A sign invites each attendee to share their favorite Bible verse or two, mark them in the Bible with the highlighter, and leave a message on a bookmark that is then left in the Bible. This produces a beautiful gift that is full of ready to use wisdom and good encouragement.

How often do you have the advice of the elderly women, women your mother's age, and your compatriots of similar age to you all gathered in one place? I think it is just wonderful. The focus is on God's word more than the sage advice of any woman. Each woman looks to God and shares how she has applied His teachings to the benefit of her life and relationships.

There are many who give the expected verses on marriage, others who share the verses that hold them up through difficult times, some share the verses that remind them of God's provision the most.

Here are the three that I remind myself of often and share with new brides-to-be.

1). Ecclesiastes 12:13-14

"The conclusion, when all has been heard, is: fear God and keep His commandments, because this applies to every person. For God will bring every act to judgment, everything which is hidden, whether it is good or evil."

Marriage is a crazy business sometimes. It is wonderful one day and tragic the next. It is something that takes up our energy and focus, as it should (1 Cor. 7:32-34). Sometimes, we get so lost in the day-to-day that we lose what our BIG focus is meant to be. As wives we are to be submitting to, loving, and honoring our husbands because this is what God has commanded us to do. When we lash out because our feelings get hurt - we are focused on ourselves. We get angry at his inability to put the trash INTO the trashcan instead of the counter above it (ladies, I have been married over 30 years - there is no explanation for it, just throw it away yourself when you see it and move on. Save your brain power and energy for other things. Same goes for socks next to the clothes hamper ;) ). Again, we are focused on ourselves rather than what God would have us to do.

The small things tend to become big things because we focus on them too much. Every day put your focus back on putting God first and bringing glory to Him in the way you go about your day. Post these verses where you can see them to remind you to keep on keeping on.

2.) Matthew 7:12

"In everything, therefore, treat people the same way you want them to treat you, for this is the Law and the Prophets."

Selfishness. What an ugly word. Protecting ourselves and knowing our limits need to be part of our reality too. How to balance the two? Matthew 7:12, for me, is what brings things back into perspective.

Here’s a way to walk through the thoughts about an issue -

Am I worried about this whatever because it is valuable to worry about?

How would I want my husband to approach me in regards to something like this?

Would I appreciate having THIS whatever made into something I needed to now worry about?

OK, it is something that needs to be brought to his attention. How would I want him to bring up this touchy subject to me if the roles were reversed?

Is right NOW the moment I need to bring this up?

Stopping to think instead of popping off is always a wise thing to do (Prov. 17:28; Prov. 20:3). Considering the words, the way they will sound and what they will mean to your husband is also wise (Prov. 15:1). (Yes, after 30 years, I still need reminding of this.)

3.) Acts 5:1-10

"Then Peter said to her, 'Why is it that you have agreed together to put the Spirit of the Lord to the test? Behold, the feet of those who have buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out as well.'" (Acts 5:9)

This is not the nicest of marriage moments in Scripture, I will give you that. There is an important lesson learned here beyond the not lying to God aspect.

Ananias was struck dead when he held to the lie about the gift he and his wife, Sapphira, were making to the brethren. Sapphira was not struck dead at that moment. When she came in later, unaware of what had happened to her husband, she was asked about the amount of the gift. God, through Peter, gave her the opportunity to represent her own beliefs and actions separate from that of her husband. We are to assume that had she repented of agreeing to and participating in the lie, she would not have died.

Submission and loyalty between spouses is an important thing. A woman is to recognize her husband's authority and choose to submit herself to it (Eph. 5:22-24). She allows him to do his part while she focuses on her part. Scripture NEVER suggests that submission means a woman go along with her man in SIN. Acts 5:1-10 shows the truth of Galatians 3:28 "...there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus." It also exemplifies Paul's statement that there is "no partiality with God" (Rom. 2:11; Eph. 6:9; Col. 3:25).

So wives, while you go about your day finding loving ways to care for your husband, do not forget to keep God's commandments first in your heart. Consider how you would like to be treated in a given situation before you take a situation to him. Protect your soul and your marriage by not following your man into sin if he chooses to go that way. Who knows what wall of protection YOUR good actions may be for the both of you (1 Pet. 3:1-6). Take these three verses for wives and use them to strengthen your marriage daily.

Speak wisdom and walk in the Spirit so that you may see "good days" (1 Pet. 3:10-12)!

What is your favorite verse that holds you up as a wife? What was the best advice you were given as you prepared to marry? What was the worst? I would love to hear about your experience!

Enjoy!

Note: This post originated on The Diligent Woman in 2017, I’m updating and sharing it here on the new home for The Diligent Woman content.

An excellent wife, who can find? For her worth is far above jewels. Prov. 31:10 (NASB)

This woman who is being described in Proverbs 31:10-31 is a Warrior Woman. The word that is translated as "excellent"in the NASB is also translated as "virtuous" in the KJV and NKJV. "Worthy woman" is what the ASV says. Our English words do not always convey the exact idea that was in the original language. This is one of those times, in my opinion.

This Hebrew word chayilmeans "strength, might, efficiency, wealth, army". It is used 243 times in the Old Testament. In at least 181 of those 243 times it is referring to something military related. So, this woman could just as easily be described as "a strong woman", "a mighty woman", or "a valiant woman". This, my friend, is the woman each of is made to be - a warrior woman.

The Diligent Woman is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber.

This warrior woman wages her battle quite literally on the home front. She is the soldier designated to the keeping (another military concept, watching over the "keep") of the hearth and home.

There are many who want to tear you down for being a "stay at home mom" or a "housewife". They seem to think that these are lowly forms of self-expression and function. What a foolish position to take!

Use Your Imagination

For just a moment I want you to use your imagination. In Ephesians 6:10-17 we are given a clear depiction of the armor God has given to His warriors, ALL of them. So in your mind picture that armor laid out in front of you:

  • the belt of Truth that holds the armor all together

  • the breastplate of Righteousness that protects all of the vital organs

  • boots that are strengthened through preparation in the Gospel of Peace

  • the shield of Faith to brace on your arm to extinguish the blows of the enemy

  • the helmet of Salvation

  • and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God

You reach out and pick those items up and put them on yourself. Galatians 3:28 says that whether you are male or female does not matter, all are in Christ. So this armor will fit you as well as it fits any other Christian. This armor isn't too heavy to wear all day, the burdens God gives you to carry are light and easy (Matt. 11:29-30).

See yourself standing there protected by these things, from head to toe. You are ready for battle.

Watch a warrior woman in action

In Proverbs 31:10-31 we are given a description of the way battle looks for a woman who fears the Lord (Prov. 31:30). Because she is protected and empowered by the word of God there is no need for bullying, harsh words, or tearing down of others.

  • Her husband trusts her because she does him good and not evil every day. Their children will praise her when they are old enough to tell others of the way their mother has been with them. Her husband will speak words of praise to her and about her.

  • Because she is strong is the Word she is able to spend her days interacting with others, always sharing wisdom, always teaching kindness.

  • Because she has chosen the clothing of the Word, she is prepared to share the strength and dignity that come with it towards others. Her work allows them to choose and make use of the same clothing.

  • She is wise because the Word is wrapped around her, so she sees that caring for the needy and the poor does far more than only caring for their physical needs. She has considered the future, for herself and those around her, and sought to be as prepared for what comes as she can.

This warrior woman fights against cold and hunger. She fights the ugliness of the world by bringing beauty, dignity, and wisdom to benefit all with whom she comes in contact. She has built a world where those in her family not only have confidence in her, but she has instilled confidence within them so they may go about doing what is theirs to do.

Three examples of Warrior Women

Jael, in Judges 4:17-24, was at home, keeping house, while a war was going on in the country around her. But she had her armor on. She was ready for what came through her door. Jael met Sisera, the commander of the enemy's army, at her door. She offered him food and a place to lie down and rest. Once he was asleep, she picked up a tent-peg and a hammer and killed him. Jael didn't need to leave home to earn the respect of the people around her. Jael didn't need to go looking for a war to fight. She was exactly where she was supposed to be. She is remembered through the ages because of it.

Abigail, in 1 Samuel 25, did not have to go away from home to look for a battle. One was brought to her door by the foolish actions of her husband. But because she already had her armor of the word of God on, she was ready when her servants alerted her to the danger. She went out and met David, God's anointed King over Israel, and prevented him from destroying Nabal and all that was his. Abigail used her intellect and spoke respectfully to David. She knew God's word and knew what God had promised to David. She dealt with David as a woman doing what was hers to do.

Tamar, David's daughter (2 Sam. 13:1-23), showed the same example as the woman in Proverbs 31. She did not hesitate to care for her brother, Amnon, when she was told he was ill. Amnon had evil in his heart toward Tamar, although he mistook that evil for love. When Tamar became aware of Amnon's intentions, her armor was ready. She stood up to Amnon and reminded him of what was right. Amnon ignored her words and forced himself upon her. Even though he had committed this evil against her, Tamar again stood up to Amnon. He had not taken her armor away! While recognizing the loss of something precious, she still stood up and reminded Amnon what the right thing to do would be. Her fear and grief did not cause her to shed her protective armor.

Housewife/Mother/Woman = Warrior Woman

Being a keeper at home, a housewife, is the battle you were created for. The keeper of your man's esteem, protecting your children through the love and care of training and nurturing, being wise with the household income and doing your part to keep the family fed, clothed, and housed are all HUGE things. Taking a job outside of the home so that the home can survive IS being a keeper of the home. Likewise, turning down a job outside of the home when the money isn't needed but your hands are needed at home IS being a keeper of the home.

God's word shows women wearing all sorts of "hats": shepherdess, judge of a nation, entrepreneur, Queen, mother, wife, sister, killing the enemy, protecting family from coming invasion, rich women, poor women, single women. All of them exhibit a woman who wears the armor of God as a mighty warrior without needing to "leave" home. Being a woman - feminine, gentle, and submissive - is NOT contrary to being a warrior. Those are the ways in which we are warriors.

So, I would encourage you, the next time you or someone else tries to tell you that you are "only a housewife", bring up your mental image of your having put on that armor. Go back to God's word and remind yourself of what all it takes to be "only a housewife". The work is complex and varied. It's not just physical work, but also emotional and psychological. It's all-encompassing - for you and for those for whom you benefit. A housewife is seeking to build strong foundations, shore up walls of protection, and securing a strong cover to keep Satan's worst out.

Can you see her? Can you picture that warrior woman who is inside of you? If your armor is feeling a bit weak, or you are missing a few pieces, I have a fabulous book for you to read...the Bible. Begin on page one, the book called Genesis.

Enjoy!

This episode continues our quest to learn about The Vitality of Prayer. Grab your Bible, a pen, and some paper and join me as we look at the prayer of the Elder in 3rd John.

This whole letter is directed toward a man named Gaius. The Elder writes a letter commending Gaius for the work he is doing for the Lord. Because of Gaius' efforts, the Elder rejoices to "hear of my children walking in the truth." The short simple prayer is, "Beloved, I pray that in all respects you may prosper and be in good health, just as your soul prospers." (3 Jn. 1:2) There is a relationship bound up in working for the Lord that causes the Elder to feel very connected to Gaius and those he teaches (3 Jn 1:5-7). A prayer that encompasses the needs of this life in direct correlation to growth in the spirit is an example of being worshipful, full of purpose, and very personal. You CAN pray for good health and financial needs to be met - BUT the focus should always be on the health of the relationship with God. Love for the Lord and our brethren helps us to keep this perspective.

Readings are taken from Matthew 26:31-46 and Luke 22:39-46. Jesus goes to pray in the garden telling His disciples, "My soul is deeply grieved, to the point of death". (Mt. 26:38). This very simple prayer of only one sentence is worshipful, emotional, and purposeful. The text in Luke makes it clear that it is a very fervent prayer. The emotional prayer is also physically tasking. Explore this prayer and learn how you can go to God in prayer in your weakest moments and come away stronger.

This whole series is to help you see that your messy, muddy prayers are just as worshipful as the ones said in an orderly fashion at another time. God just wants you to PRAY. The beauty of the prayer is we, YOU and I, are included in it too! Explore this prayer and see how you can express thanks and glorify God while also making requests for others.

Grab your Bible, a pen, and some paper and join me as we look at how Habakkuk prayed when he was questioning what was going on in his world around him. Context is from the book of Habakkuk.

Habakkuk lives during the later years of Judah before it is taken into captivity. The entire book is his taking his questions and concerns to God and God responding. Habakkuk is told to write these things down so when it comes time for these things to happen, the people will know why and how to respond. But it is not Habakkuk's job to go out and preach to Judah. God is teaching Habakkuk in response to his questions. Explore the prayers in this book with me and see if God shows us how we can be troubled while also having faith in God.

This episode continues our quest to learn about The Vitality of Prayer. Grab your Bible, a pen, and some paper and join me as we look at how David prayed when he finally found peace from the long years of conflict with King Saul in 2 Samuel 22.

After many long years, David finally finds rest from the conflict that started with Saul back when David was a young man. He expresses his thanksgiving to God in a prayer that evokes deep personal and emotional connections to the freedom found in God's salvation.

What happens when you repeat these phrases?

  1. The Lord is my rock.
  2. The Lord is my fortress.
  3. The Lord is my deliverer.
  4. My God
  5. My rock - in whom I take refuge.
  6. My shield.
  7. the horn of my salvation
  8. My stronghold
  9. My refuge
  10. My savior.

These are the declarations David makes at the beginning of this prayer.

Do you state God's impact on the events in your life this way? This episode encourages you to make your prayers for personal and worshipful just like David does. Find the vitality in God's salvation through telling God what you have learned He has done for YOU.

Now it's your turn. The Vitality of Prayer is the connection it keeps open between you and God. You can pray to him because you know he is the faithful, loving creator. You can trust him with your good days and bad days because you know he cares.

This episode continues our quest to learn about The Vitality of Prayer. Grab your Bible, a pen, and some paper and join me as we look at how Hannah prayed for her "great concern and provocation" and ini her joy in 1 Samuel 1 and 2. Hannah is a woman distressed because she does not have a child. Her husband has another wife who has been able to give him children. This woman would provoke Hannah "bitterly" because of her lack of children. What can we learn about prayer from this? 1. We can pray to God in our distress and in our joy. 2. God hears us even if no one else knows you're praying. 3. Trusting in God is the answer to every question and concern you may have. 4. Reverence isn't only found in prayers that speak only praise to God. Similar to Moses' prayer for Miriam in episode 403, Hannah's prayer shows us we can cry out to God in our dismay over a terrible situation. Prayer doesn't have to be complicated. When we get what we asked for, but at a time later than we expected, it is still a sign God heard and answered. Don't hesitate to pray for the things that you want. Don't hesitate to take the events that pain you to the Lord.. Your job is to ask and trust. Go back and check out Episode 401 to learn more about how Jesus taught to approach God in prayer. This episode continues our quest to learn about The Vitality of Prayer. Grab your Bible, a pen, and some paper and join me as we look at how Moses prayed for his sister, Miriam, after her sin in Numbers 12. Numbers 12 records an incident where Miriam and Aaron let their envy show when they don't approve of Moses' choice of a wife. Instead of expressing their issue about the marriage, instead they claim that Moses has elevated himself in importance. They loft themselves up to an equal place with Moses and God hears them. God calls the three out of the tent and confronts them directly. He commends Moses and then punishes Aaron and Miriam by causing Miriam to become leprous. Aaron cries out to Moses and Moses cries out to God. Moses prays one sentence, "O God, heal her, I pray!" God hears Moses, but He doesn't change His mind this time (as he did in the prayer we discussed in episode 402). What can we learn about prayer from this? We can cry out to God in our dismay over a terrible situation. Someone's sin doesn't need to stop us from praying for their circumstances to be improved. Prayer doesn't have to be complicated. When we get what we asked for, but at a time later than we expected, it is still a sign God heard and answered. Don't hesitate to pray for someone's tragedy, no matter what you know about their life the rest of the time! Let God be the righteous and merciful Judge that He is. Your job is to ask and trust. This episode continues our quest to learn about The Vitality of Prayer. Grab your Bible, a pen, and some paper and join me as we look at how Moses prayed on Mt Sinai for the sins of the people..

Exodus 32 is major event in between Israel being in captivity in Egypt and the promised land of Canaan. God is giving Moses the law, written by His own hand, on tablets of stone. Then God tells Moses there is trouble in the camp and God wants to focus on His anger against the people. He tells Moses He wants to create the nation again from Moses because He is going to destroy them all. Moses now pleads the case for God's plan for mankind. It is a logical prayer based on God's promises to Abraham. God hears Moses and changes His mind. THEN Moses goes down to the camp and actually sees with his own eyes what the people have done. Now Moses is emotional. He directs the Levites in executing God's punishment on the people and then Moses prays again. This time his prayer is more emotional. He is begging for mercy and forgiveness for the people. If God says their lives are forfeit, he would rather go with them (remember God offered to create a nation from him just a bit before when he was on the mountain) to death. Logic and emotion. Pleas or an orderly case laid out for God. All are proper in prayer when directed toward God in a way that acknowledges His sovereignty and glorifies Him. Your messy, muddy prayers are just as worshipful as the ones said in an orderly fashion at another time. God just wants you to PRAY. Take the time to study prayer so you can be more diligent about prayer. This is your conversation with God! Make it a good conversation.

Season 4 of The Diligent Woman Podcast is going to be all about The Vitality of Prayer. First Thessalonians 5:16-18 says, "rejoice, always pray without ceasing. In everything. Give thanks for this as God's will for you in Christ jesus." It's God's will for you that you are able to rejoice, pray, and give thanks.

Over in Acts 17:24 through 28, we're told that he needs nothing. But he wants you to reach for him and to find him. God reveals himself to you all the time through the created world around you. But he took the effort to speak to you, to share ideas with you, to connect with you through the written word, gathered through the centuries, so you would want to know him and want to talk to him.

Now it's your turn. The Vitality of Prayer is the connection it keeps open between you and God. You can pray to him because you know he is the faithful, loving creator. You can trust him with your good days and bad days because you know he cares.

Prayer is meant to be personal.

Join me for 12 weeks as we study prayers in the Bible and learn how to develop the capacity to grow and live in relationship with God through prayer.

All your passion,

All your vigor.

All your energy.

Thriving as you walk with the Lord.

Season 4 begins September 10th.

The Bible uses lots of patterns. God shows us He had a plan for mankind before He created the Earth. He tells us to follow the patterns set out by faithful brethren. He gave Noah a pattern to follow for the Ark. God gave Moses a detailed pattern for the Tabernacle. Using God's word to establish a path for you to follow is a good thing. Today's episode looks at how to study in a way that you can find those patterns. Then it shows how to use the pattern for yourself or for others you may be trying to teach. When you study your Bible you will sometimes come across a verse that is hard to understand on its own. The phrasing may be different from what you are used to. The verse may be talking about things normal for ancient times or first century time, but not at all normal for modern times. The words may just be weird! Good thing God prepared His word to be timeless! In today's episode Angela looks at several contexts that some have described as "being hard to understand what is meant". she walks through exploring the context to see how God fills in the blanks that may seem to be in one verse. Learn how to use the context to explain hard to understand verses or concepts. God is the best author and His own best commentator. Trust the context He has provided. Join Angela as she walks through how to see and note different layers in one context. This allows you to build layers into your own Bible study each time you come to the same context.

Angela looks at where Peter validates that there are some things in scripture that are hard to understand. That means you are not alone AND God understands that you may find it difficult sometime. Isn't that amazing?!

Study talks about how to use scripture writing to help you better comprehend what you are reading. Bible marking is explained as a way to help you retain what you have learned so when you come back to a scripture you start with a foundation of what you've already learned before. 2 Peter 3:11-18 Ephesians 1:15-2:10 Mentioned in this episode: S3 Ep 302 Study Like the Bereans S3 Ep 303 Study with Scripture Writing Learn about Scripture Writing How to Study the Bible with a Bible Marking System Send questions and comments to The Diligent Woman here Helpful tools for Bible Study:

Do you trust that the Bible is meant to be approachable and understood? I do! Over the next 12 weeks we will explore different ways to approach Bible study - without the need of a degree from a Bible college, a huge library of commentaries, or the ability to read Ancient Hebrew or Greek. God wrote it so could be understood by those who come seeking understanding. You should be able to trust that God is faithful in this way so you can be confident about being a Christian woman. Explore the scriptures that show this is what God intended, then dive in to learn how to learn about God the way God's people did. Examples of what will be covered -

  • how to study the "noble Bereans" did in the book of Acts
  • explore how God told the kings of Israel to learn His word
  • how to study the way Jesus taught
  • how to study using God's "outlines" and much more.

Take a #DiligentMinute to consider...

In Psalm 102:18 a promise is made to the afflicted that the message in the Psalm "will be written for the generation to come, that a people yet to be created may praise the Lord."

God was thinking of you, as part of the "generation to come" back then. In John 17:20-21 we can read where Jesus prayed for you too. He knew you, and other believers like you, were coming. He knew you needed God's word to find unity. How precious a gift that Jesus would think of you enough to pray for you while He prayed for the disciples right in front of Him. Live today like you are something worth mentioning by Jesus Our Lord. Put away your doubts, and trust in His love and care for you. Enjoy! For more encouragement like this, check out:

Psalm 103:13-14 says that God shows compassion on those who fear Him and He is mindful that we are "but dust" (NASB).

He knows of your struggles. He always has. There is no mystery for Him. Ephesians 3:11 tells us how Paul (ad you) fit into God's eternal plans. You are not an afterthought. He prepared for you.

So take a minute and thank God for His awareness and ask Him to help you as struggle through learning to walk in His ways one day at a time. Enjoy! For more encouragement check out:

In episode 2.01 A Woman of Valor is... we talked about how the word "valor", also translated as "excellent" and "virtuous", means "a force". In today's episode we will meet a woman who reflects this trait in a big way.

Abigail is a wise woman who must deal with two different men who are not acting in ways that are good for other people. She must use her wits to correct a situation that was not of her making, and she does so by leaning into God's truth.
