Today, I’m sitting down with Virginia Wood, Functional Nutritionist to talk about how we use the DNA Life test (Nordic Labs, Denmark/UK) to translate genetic tendencies into real-life choices—without turning your DNA into a destiny sentence.

We’re diving into:
hormone pathways + stress physiology
movement & recovery (how to train smarter, not louder)
nutrition patterns (food-first, always)
inflammation genomics
gut genomics + symptom patterns

Enjoy the conversation!

Over the years in medicine, many of those of us who are physicians have cared for patients whose symptoms are very real and very debilitating, yet don’t always fit neatly into our traditional diagnostic frameworks. Our guest today, Dr. Julius Torelli, speaks about what Western medicine calls ‘medically unexplained symptoms,’ and in today's podcast, we'll be taking a deep dive into how his thinking evolved around that concept. We'll explore how he defines that category, what he thinks might be missing in conventional care, and how he’s come to understand the role of the nervous system and emotional health in those cases. Listen for all the details--you won't want to miss this one!

A conversation about prevention, surgery, and what comes before.

There’s a moment in medicine that stays with you, when you realize a patient has reached a point where surgery is needed, and you quietly wonder:
Could this have been caught earlier?

Surgery saves lives.
This is true.

But it’s often not the beginning of the story.

It’s the moment we enter the story.

What happens before that moment?

Subtle symptoms, shifts in the body, changes that don’t quite make sense--often dismissed, normalized, or missed.

In this podcast conversation, Dr. Lorna Brudie and I explore when surgery is truly necessary, what patterns we see before patients reach that point, where prevention fits into modern care, and how we might begin to see patients sooner.

This isn’t about choosing prevention over surgery. It’s about expanding the window, so we can understand the body earlier, before it has to speak louder.

What if we listened sooner?

What if we looked deeper?

What if we connected the dots--before the diagnosis?

I’m honoured to introduce you to Laura Bratton in this episode. At the age of nine, Laura was diagnosed with an eye disease and faced the difficult reality that she would become blind. Over the next ten years she experienced the traumatic transition of adjusting to life without sight. She is the author of the book, Harnessing Courage, and she founded Ubi Global, which is an organization that provides speaking and coaching to empower all people to overcome challenges and obstacles with grit and gratitude.

Our conversation today is about the differences between grit and grind, how gratitude can be a tool for moving forward through the grief of profound change, and finding new sources of strength through community and courage. Most of all, we focus on the role of choice in navigating change and grief--listen to learn more about this key element in facing change with courage.

I hope you'll both enjoy this episode and find it inspiring, as I did. And remember--the safest place to be, especially during a time of change, is connected to yourself. From there, you can go anywhere.

In this episode you’ll hear us journey through:

  • The simple yet powerful practices you can begin today, whether you’ve meditated before or are just curious
  • Why resilience isn’t just bouncing back—it’s becoming someone more whole and alive than you were before

What happens when the roles we’ve spent a lifetime perfecting—mother, partner, caregiver, professional—begin to fall away? What’s left behind when the world stops telling us who to be?

In this soulful and honest conversation, Dr. Mary Louder, DO sits down with writer and transformation guide Keri Mangis to explore the powerful initiatory journey of menopause and midlife. More than hormones or hot flashes, these years invite a deeper kind of alchemy—one that asks us to shed, surrender, and remake ourselves from the inside out.

Together, they unpack:

  • Why menopause is not an ending, but an emergence
  • The grief of losing identities we once clung to
  • How crisis can be an unexpected teacher
  • What it means to live from soul rather than role

This is not just a health talk—it’s a call to awaken.
Tune in and remember: your becoming is not behind you, it’s still unfolding.

Have you ever felt like you were doing everything right—but still not getting the answers you need?

This week on The Dr. Mary Louder Podcast, I sat down with Dr. Grace Charles, ND, a naturopathic physician who specializes in integrative fertility care. Our conversation left me reflecting deeply—not just on how we approach fertility, but on how often modern medicine misses the deeper story.

For anyone who’s been told “your labs look normal” but still feels something is off…
For those navigating the emotional and physical toll of trying to conceive…
For practitioners who want to treat fertility with more depth, compassion, and clarity…

This episode offers a fresh and grounded perspective.

Dr. Grace helps us see that fertility is not just a function of hormone levels or ovulation timing. It’s an intricate reflection of the whole person—body, mind, spirit, and story.

In this episode, we explore:

What a naturopathic fertility workup actually includes—and how it goes far beyond lab results
Why emotional and energetic factors (like stress, loss, or internalized pressure) often go unspoken—and unaddressed—in standard care
How trauma, diet, lifestyle, and sleep impact fertility at a root-cause level
What true “integrative care” means when it comes to fertility, and how collaboration between providers can shift outcomes

And most importantly, we talk about how this kind of care changes how a woman feels—not just about her chances of conception, but about her sense of agency, peace, and belonging in her own body.

Why I wanted to have this conversation

Fertility is one of those sacred crossroads in medicine—where physiology, identity, grief, and hope all converge.

Too often, the standard model of care reduces it to numbers, medications, and timelines. And while those tools have their place, they can leave women feeling unseen, unheard, and… ultimately, alone.

But what if we looked deeper?
What if we treated fertility as a signal—not just a diagnosis?

Dr. Grace does exactly that. Her work is gentle and grounded, backed by science and by presence. She approaches each patient with curiosity and reverence—and it shows.

You can connect with Dr. Grace Charles and learn more about her fertility work on her website.

In this episode, we step into the liminal—where the visible and invisible meet, and where loss becomes a portal to something mysteriously alive.

We explore the story of Tess Lynch, a woman whose life is fractured by unimaginable grief when her husband and young son are taken in a sudden accident. A gifted shamanic healer, Tess has helped countless others navigate their pain. But when it comes to her own, the path forward feels impossible.

Set against the windswept backdrop of coastal Rhode Island, Tess's journey unfolds alongside Owen, a single father to an autistic child, and Olivia, a caregiver to her father with dementia. All three are walking with grief—some freshly raw, others silently enduring. Yet through each thread, the realm of spirit is never far.

Inspired by the Celtic mythic landscape and infused with the teachings of ancient wisdom, this novel—born from the heart and mind of Jane Burns, shamanic practitioner and teacher—invites us to reflect on how the seen and unseen collaborate in our healing.

Together, we explore how love endures beyond the veil, and how even in darkness, we are never truly alone.

For decades, hormone therapy came with a warning — a literal black box stamped on every prescription. It shaped how doctors prescribed, how women decided, and how fear lingered in exam rooms.

But now, the FDA is lifting that warning.

So what does that mean for us — as clinicians, as women, as storytellers of our own health?

This week, I sit down with Mary Heim, RPh of Rivertown Compounding Pharmacy, to unpack the truth behind hormone therapy: the science, the stigma, and the shift.

We talk bio-identicals, myths, personalization, and how to reclaim clarity and care in the face of medical messaging that hasn’t always served us.

This one’s for the women still asking, “Is it safe?”For the practitioners ready to unlearn and relearn.
And for anyone wondering what happens after the black box fades.

What if your hot flashes, weight gain, and mood swings weren't just random menopause symptoms but signals your body has been sending for decades? In this groundbreaking conversation with genomic nutritional pioneer Amanda Archibald, we uncover how menopause is not a cliff you suddenly fall off, but the visible tip of an iceberg that's been building throughout your life.

Your DNA contains the blueprint for how your body processes hormones, manages stress, and detoxifies, and when we decode this information, we gain unprecedented power to address menopausal symptoms at their source. Amanda explains why the traditional approach of simply replacing hormones often fails without addressing the underlying genomic patterns that determine how well those hormones function in your unique body. Instead, cellular function, environmental factors, and nutrition form the three foundational elements for addressing menopausal symptoms.

The conversation takes fascinating turns as we explore the estrobolome (the gut bacteria that metabolize estrogen), why serotonin production depends partly on estrogen, and how specific herbs like Mexican oregano can act as "gene whisperers" that help optimize your body's hormonal pathways. We debunk the myth that MTHFR is the only gene that matters and instead look at how multiple genes--more than 22 of them--interact to create your personal hormonal landscape.

Most importantly, we reveal how understanding your genomic patterns can save you from wasting money on supplements and treatments that don't address your specific needs. Whether you're in your 20s preparing for the future, in the midst of perimenopause, or beyond, this conversation offers a revolutionary framework for understanding the decades-long conversation between your genes and hormones.

Ready to discover how your DNA holds the keys to hormonal balance? This episode will transform how you think about menopause and empower you with practical insights to work with your unique genetic makeup rather than against it.

Dr. Louder and Dr. Alicia Williams discuss the many factors that play into cardiovascular health, from hormones to cholesterol to diet and gut health to emotional and mental health and so much more. She's board certified in cardiology, internal medicine and obesity medicine, and has an extensive background in adult echocardiography .
