The servant of Jairus tells his master that the miracle is too late; his daughter has died. He advises Jairus not to trouble the Master any longer. This sentiment implies the fact that the servant believed there was only one way for the miracle to happen. It was too late; it couldn't happen in any other way.

Isaiah prophesies of an earthquake that will level mountains, exalt valleys, and make rough places smooth. Come Follow Me 2022 Old Testament September 5-11 Sep 5-11 Isaiah
As a society, we have started to move away from teaching girls to cover their bodies to protect men who apparently have little self-control (thank goodness). The teaching that seems to be replacing it is, "Covering our bodies means we respect our bodies." I think this approach is far better, but it still confuses me. How exactly does respect equate with covering?
While I don't have a problem with this teaching, I still think we can do so much better. There are ways of teaching modesty that can inspire our youth to think more deeply about who they are and how they present themselves.

There is no feeling in the world that compares to the kind of feelings King David expresses in his Psalms. The Psalms. A collection of songs and prayers that are mostly attributed to King David. There was a time in my life when these Psalms felt repetitive and boring. However, because of a personal experience, I have learned that these inspired songs and prayers were written by people with problems that were not so different from our’s. I have learned that some of life’s most horrific or nuanced problems can all be solved by the simple answers found in the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Job has lost everything. His children, wife, possessions, and friends are gone. All that’s left is a whole bunch of physical pain. Job talks about both his suffering and innocence throughout these chapters, and his “friends” tell him that he needs to be more accepting of the Lord’s will. They teach that if he is willing to repent and accept the Lord, his life will be built up again. Interestingly enough, the Lord is pleased with Job and displeased with his friends. How can this be? What does this teach us about how the Lord feels about expressing our suffering honestly?

As I read Esther this week, I was struck by the number of times this Old Testament book mentions the clothing that was being worn. It talks about clothes, crowns, and rings. Come Follow Me 2022 Old Testament July 11-17
Hezekiah lies sick in bed. Isaiah comes and prophesies of his death. Hezekiah pleads with the Lord, and Isaiah delivers the news that he will live another fifteen years. We know that no righteous man shall be taken before his time. We know that Hezekiah was a righteous man. Therefore, if it was his original appointed time to die, Hezekiah must have completed his specific work on the earth or Heavenly Father wouldn’t have been planning on bringing him home. So is it possible to live on past your life mission? This story argues yes and all because Hezekiah asked to live longer. Where is the line between asking for what we want and giving deference to the Lord’s will?

Naaman was asked by the prophet Elisha to go and bathe in the river Jordan seven times in order to be cleansed from his leprosy. To me (and apparently to Naaman also), this seemed kinda strange and arbitrary. Sometimes God gives us commandments that are morally grounded - don’t cheat, lie, or murder. Other times, He may give us other commandments that are not connected to being a good person at all. What is the point of these kinds of commandments? Are they just as important as the morally-based commandments?

However, are there any details we’ve missed? What can we learn from smaller details that may hold significant symbolism?

Come Follow Me 2022 Old Testament May 30-June 5
Many of us may roll our eyes or laugh at the Israelites for their problems with idolatry...and yet...the scriptures are written for our day. This implies that perhaps we’re struggling with our own forms of idolatry. There are two different types of idolatry that we can focus on throughout these chapters in Judges. By categorizing them, we are better able to see these types of idolatry in our own lives.

Come Follow Me 2022 Old Testament May 23-29 Joshua
In this week’s chapters, Joshua takes over as prophet and leads the Israelites to prepare for battle. There is an incredible amount of story with a prostitute named Rahab, miracles and rivers, surgery outside of enemy cities, and untouched walls crumbling down. There is a parable here if we look closely and recognize the symbols.

Come Follow Me 2022 Old Testament May 16-22 Deuteronomy
At one point in time, the Israelites came to Moses asking for water. Moses took it to the Lord and was commanded to speak to the rock. Instead of speaking to the rock, Moses hit the rock. Water still came out for the Israelites, but Moses was barred from ever entering the promised land with the rest of the Israelites. This was an obstinate consequence that the Lord followed through on; Moses “left” this world without ever walking into the promised land. Why did the Lord choose such a large consequence for a seemingly small infraction? What can we learn from His decision to bar Moses?

Come Follow Me 2022 Old Testament May 2-8 Exodus Leviticus
The Day of Atonement is one of the most important festivals to the ancient Israelites. Everything is detailed and symbolic. Everything is meant to point to Christ. There are two goats as part of the ritual, one goat is sacrificed to pay for the sins of the people and the second goat has the sins of Israel placed upon it before it is released into the wilderness to take away the sins of the people. Why are there two goats? And what does the combination of these two goats teach us about the atonement?

The Old Testament institute manual teaches us that the Law of Moses can be understood through a testimony of Jesus Christ. As I studied this week, I learned that this principle extends beyond symbolism and helps us to understand the more "unfriendly" parts of the Law of Moses, and of life itself.

Come Follow Me 2022 Old Testament April 18-24 Exodus 18-20
The Ten Commandments were the very beginning of the Lord's teachings for the Israelites. This was the foundation that was meant to be built upon. The Lord intended His people to be holy and righteous, so righteous that He could stand among them. The Ten Commandments were to set the stage for helping His people grow. As such, I can imagine that each of these commandments was essential and deeper than what meets the eye. One of these commandments, to not take the Lord's name in vain, is one such commandment. How might this commandment mean more than we're used to?

Isaiah saw the mortal life of the Savior in vision and prophesied about it. One of the things that Isaiah observed were the different reactions that people would have towards Christ. What kind of reaction would we have had towards the atonement of the Savior? We can get a rough idea of how we might have responded when we take the time to look at how we respond to His atonement in our life now.

When the Egyptians take off after the Israelites, Moses and the Israelites have very different reactions. As the Israelites cower in fear, Moses encourages them that the Lord will fight for them (even before the Lord tells Moses that He's going to step in!). When you look at the life-perspectives of Moses versus the Israelites, we find hints on how to build the kind of faith that Moses had - the kind of faith that parts seas.

Come Follow Me 2022 February 7-13 Feb 7-13 Genesis 12-17 Abraham 1-2
Trials. Whether they come from a lack of blessings (such as infertility) or something bad occurring (like a health problem), trials come to all of us. How do we truly overcome trials in this life? How do we find the strength to go on if trials seem to come all at the same time with no end in sight? What are our options to survive the tempests of life?
There are times in our lives when the Lord carries us through a trial. I’ve heard stories of unearthly peace in the midst of devastating trials. I’ve heard stories of people pleading for strength to carry them hour to hour as they go on living through hardships that I can’t imagine. I’ve felt this kind of “carrying” to a smaller extent as I’ve been comforted even when there are no solutions.
As I started to ask the Lord to carry some burdens I’ve been experiencing lately, the Spirit made me pause. I was enlightened and reminded that the Lord can’t swoop in and carry me effortlessly through every trial. Though He never leaves me, He will not always carry me through. How would I get any stronger if I didn’t have to carry some of the weight myself? He mercifully allows me to carry some weight because He wants me to grow, and He makes up for the stumbles along the way. He perfectly knows me and knows when to step in, and He also knows what I need to grow.
When Abraham asked the Lord about his lack of children, he had a vision of the life of Jesus Christ and found peace. He didn’t have a vision of his future children, and he didn’t receive his promised children (at that moment). Instead, he saw Christ. His faith and trust in Christ developed, and THAT was when Abraham found peace.

Come Follow Me July 12-18 Doctrine and Covenants 77-80
In Section 78, the Lord revealed that He wanted an organization that could watch over the storehouse and printing press. This organization came to be known as the United Firm. Unfortunately, two years later, it failed because of mounting debt. How could the Lord let His organization fail so quickly? While this may have a been a great trial of faith for those immediately involved, we can look back from our day and find a parable for our very lives.
