Welcome, everyone! Today, the old jarhead, Dennis Guzik, is back with some great career advice, focusing on an important concept in workplace dynamics—silos.

Key Highlights: Introduction to Silos: * Silos are structures on farms used to hold grain, where nothing gets in or out without effort. * In a business context, silos refer to divisions within a company where information flow is limited unless active efforts are made. * Examples of Silos in Businesses: * Internal Divisions: Different departments not sharing information about projects, purchases, etc. * On-site vs. Remote Workers: Lack of communication between those who work on company premises and those who work remotely. * Personal Experiences: * The speaker saw numerous silos during his tenure in the defense world, particularly at the Pentagon. * Efforts to break down silos were only marginally successful, often requiring continuous effort to maintain communication. * Impact on Employees and Companies: * Silos can hinder employee awareness, professional growth, and overall company productivity. * Breaking down silos fosters cross-division work, enhancing skills and professional experiences. * Advice for Managers and Employees: * Identify and Break Down Silos: + Managers should actively look for silos and work to dismantle them. + Promote information sharing and cross-division collaboration. + Engage in Volunteering and Social Functions: + Activities like team sports and company events increase communication and awareness. + Example: Mary, who organized a company picnic, gained recognition up to the CEO level. + The Importance of Breaking Down Silos: + Essential for both organizational success and individual employee growth. + Efforts should start from the bottom and reach all the way to the top. * Call to Action: * Think about how you can apply these strategies to your own career. As a retired "jarhead, I offer my experiences and advice to help you improve your career. It's my firm belief that you should follow your passions instead of staying in a job that brings you no satisfaction.

For instance, I once met a waiter who dreamt of becoming an electrician but continued to work as a waiter out of convenience and fear of change. This is a perfect example of why setting goals and making actionable plans for achieving your dream career is important.

My mission is to guide individuals in finding a career that fits their skills and life aspirations. My book, "Find a Job That Fits Your Life," is a comprehensive guide designed for those unsure about their career path and looking for direction. Together, we can turn your dreams into reality by taking decisive steps towards a fulfilling career.

As someone who has navigated the often complex world of career transitions, I can assure you that the journey to your dream job is both possible and rewarding. Here are some key points to keep in mind on your quest:

  • Identify Your Passion: Reflect on what genuinely excites you. What activities or topics do you find yourself drawn to, even in your leisure time?
  • Assess Your Skills: Take an inventory of your strengths and experiences. Consider how these can be transferred or adapted to a new field.
  • Set Clear Goals: Define what success looks like for you. Establish both short-term and long-term goals to help guide your efforts.
  • Create a Plan: Outline the steps necessary to achieve your goals. This could include further education, networking, or gaining relevant experience.
  • Take Action: Start implementing your plan with confidence. Don’t be afraid of making mistakes; it's part of the learning process.
  • Seek Support: Surround yourself with a supportive network of friends, family, and mentors who can provide guidance and encouragement.
  • Be Persistent: Stay committed to your goals, even when faced with obstacles. Remember that change takes time and perseverance.

By following these principles, you can steer your career in a direction that aligns with your aspirations. My book, "Find a Job That Fits Your Life," offers additional insights and tools to support you on this journey.

Summary of Dennis Guzik's Podcast on PlanningHi folks, I'm Dennis Guzik, the old jarhead, here to give you great career advice to help you progress in your career. Today, we're discussing the importance of planning and how it can be a key to your success.

Key Points: Planning is essential for complex tasks that can't be handled instinctively. Simple tasks like making a ham sandwich don't require a plan, but hosting a large dinner does. * In the Marine Corps, Dennis learned structured planning as a war planner, helping to deal with potential threats to the US. * When to plan:* You need a plan when the task is too complex to wing it.

Components of a Simple Plan:1. Tasks (Scope): Identify what needs to be done. 2. Timeline (Schedule): Ensure there's enough time to complete tasks or adjust as needed. 3. Resources (Budget): Make sure you can afford to do what you plan.

Example of a Dinner Plan: Tasks: Shopping, cooking, serving. * Timeline: Shopping the day before, cooking in order to finish all components simultaneously. * Resources:* Budget for the meal.

Benefits of Planning:1. Clarifies complexity: Planning forces you to think through a task, revealing its true complexity. 2. Adaptability: A plan allows you to adapt to changes and request necessary resources from your boss. 3. Guidance for others: Having a plan helps guide the actions of others involved, increasing the likelihood of success.

Additional Insights: Primary and implied tasks: Identify primary tasks and any additional tasks they imply (e.g., making a menu, prepping food, setting the table). * Timeline organization: Spread out tasks if you're working alone and ensure they align with deadlines. * Resource management:* Cost out each required item and adjust if necessary.

Final Thoughts: Plan to succeed: "If you fail to plan, you plan to fail." Planning is crucial for career success. * Further reading:* Check out Dennis's book, "Find a Job that Fits Your Life," for more on planning in your career.

Call to Action: Take Dennis's advice, make a plan, and watch your career thrive. Thanks for listening

Dennis's passion is helping others become more successful and to achieve their goals. His clients have gone from intern to Vice President, transitioned from the military to heading a large organization, have gone from doing a job to doing what they dreamed of. He has been dubbed the "Ultimate Dad," for the honest and direct advice he gives.

So much of what you need to know, in order to make your career a success, is not taught in formal education. This typically includes deciding things such as what sort of career a do you want, how do you go about getting on that career path, how do you make a great impression at work and how do you handle leadership assignments in difficult situations.

"I personally saw good employees hired and promoted into leadership roles without any preparation or training. And I want to help fix that problem." Dennis Guzik

The Old Jarhead is back with career advice on Non-Compete Agreements.

• Non-compete agreements are contracts that restrict an employee's ability to work for a competitor after leaving a job.

• Employers use them to protect their trade secrets and investments in employees, but they can limit job opportunities for workers.

• The US Federal Trade Commission recently ruled that non-compete agreements are no longer legal, sparking debate and potential legal challenges.

• The Old Jarhead has experience on both sides of the issue and offers his thoughts on the ruling.

• He believes the FTC exceeded its boundaries, and the impact may be minimal for junior and mid-level employees but could be detrimental for small businesses with valuable trade secrets.

• Ultimately, lawyers and lobbyists will likely profit from this decision while it is being sorted out.

• Business owners shouldn't panic yet, and employees still constrained by non-compete agreements shouldn't celebrate prematurely.

• To keep growing professionally, he recommends checking out his podcast, "Be the Ultimate," and giving his book, "Find a Job That Fits Your Life," a read.

Dennis Guzik is the host of the Be the Ultimate podcast, where he shares valuable career advice.

• One of the most common questions he is asked as a former corporate leader is whether to go to grad school.

• The first factor to consider is if grad school is necessary and if it will benefit your career.

• If the answer is yes, then it's important to think about whether you enjoy the field of study and can handle the time and cost.

• While going to grad school while working full time may take longer, it provides a steady income and potential employer support.

• Full-time grad school offers a more immersive experience but requires financial investment without a salary.

• Another option is going straight to grad school after obtaining a bachelor's degree, which may be beneficial with more experience under your belt.

• Ultimately, the decision should be based on personal preference and weighing the factors of liking the field, needing it for your career, and being able to handle the commitment.

Career Insights with the Old Jarhead: Why Attitude Matters in InterviewsIn his insightful podcast episode, the seasoned career coach, known as the Old Jarhead, emphasizes the importance of having the right attitude during job interviews. With experience spanning the Marine Corps, corporate America, and career coaching, he offers a fresh take on navigating the interview process.

According to him, a positive attitude can trump skills at the interview stage. He reasons that by the time you're called for an interview, your skills have already been assessed favorably; what sets candidates apart is their enthusiasm for the role and the company. Instead of rehashing your resume, the interview is your opportunity to showcase your interest in the company and the position, demonstrating that you've done your homework.

Positive attitude aside, he also advises showing you're thinking long-term with questions about career progression within the company and its future prospects. However, he cautions against seeming too needy as it may suggest that you're likely to jump ship at the next best offer.

His final takeaway? Bring a good attitude to your interview, and it could lead to more job offers. And for further wisdom on finding the perfect job, he suggests picking up his book, "Find a Job Fits Your Life," claiming it could be a game-changer in your career search.

Boost your interview game and discover more pearls of wisdom by tuning into the Old Jarhead's podcast and checking out his book for comprehensive guidance.

The old jarhead is back with great career advice.

• The advice is guaranteed to work and is based on the BAMCIS concept: Begin planning, arrange for the reconnaissance, make the reconnaissance, complete the order, issue the order, and supervise.

• This concept was taught at the beginning of his Marine Corps career and can be applied to any job or situation.

• Begin planning by setting aside time to think about what needs to be done.

• Arrange for the reconnaissance by talking to other people who may be involved.

• Make the reconnaissance by gathering all necessary information.

• Complete the order by delegating responsibilities to team members.

• Issue the order by clearly communicating tasks and expectations.

• Supervise and make yourself available for guidance and help as needed.

• BAMCIS can be helpful in a variety of situations and should be customized to fit your specific circumstances.

When preparing for an interview, presentation is key:

  • *Dress the Part*: Ensure your clothes are clean and professional. Making a polished impression is crucial, particularly when meeting higher-ups.
  • *Know the Field*: Go beyond the job description and understand the company you're hoping to join. Your research demonstrates both commitment and enthusiasm.
  • *Engage with Questions*: Showing up without questions can imply you're not fully invested. Ask insightful ones to reflect your knowledge and sincere interest.
  • *Communicate Clearly*: Offer sharp, focused responses. Waffling may be perceived as unclear thinking or poor communication skills.
  • *Exit Strategically*: If the conversation strays off-course, find a tactful way to steer back and close with confidence.
  • *Finish Strong*: Have a powerful closing ready. Highlight your key strengths, articulate your value, and thank the interviewers for their time.

Remember, interviews are as much about delivering your message as they are about the content of the message itself. Stand tall, speak clearly, and let your preparation pave the pathway to success. Go get that job!

Dennis discusses two contradictory findings regarding working remotely or in-office during Covid.

Companies that force employees back into the office see lower morale and higher turnover. However, remote workers were promoted 31% less frequently.

The first piece of advice is to decide what you want from your life and job - promotions or remote work. Choose based on your life goals, not just your job's demands. This may mean parting ways if they conflict.

The second advice is to have an open dialogue with your boss. Explain your situation and thinking. Often, a compromise can be found that satisfies both your life needs and the business's, but this requires communication.

Not all situations can be resolved, but communication is key to finding potential solutions the speaker may not have considered. Getting everyone's needs met leads to the best outcome.

· He discusses focusing on the first step rather than feeling overwhelmed by the journey ahead. Taking things one step at a time allows steady progress up the "staircase" toward one's goals.

· Guzik recommends having a plan but concentrating solely on the immediate next step. Getting each subsequent step done will lead to the top of the staircase more quickly than worrying about future challenges.

· For those unsure of their career path, Guzik offers his book "Find a Job that Fits Your Life" for guidance and says he's open to discussing any topics that could help people advance up their own staircases.

Finding a mentor, either formally or informally, is essential for getting advice on how things are done specifically in their organization. The relationship should be respected with prepared questions.

As the new boss, respect should be shown to former peers who are now direct reports. Their input should be sought while remembering the final decision responsibility. Tact is important to lead successfully in this difficult situation.

· Dennis Guzik discussed defining small successes and focusing on achievable goals to measure progress.

· Doing what you love is not enough; one must also be good at it and ensure there is a market for it.

· Admitting what you do not know and seeking information is better than bluffing.

· Sharing information with others strengthens teams and prevents problems caused by withholding critical details.

· Plans should be suitable, feasible, and acceptable to determine if they can realistically accomplish the goals.

· Publicly thanking others builds rapport and recognition for their contributions.

· Dressing professionally commands more respect and avoids missing opportunities due to an unpolished appearance.

· Creating contingency plans called "branches and sequels" prepares for unexpected issues. Something being common or popular is not justification if it is unwise or against policy, rules, or principles.

Dennis Guzik discusses his four f's for submitting a resume: fire, follow up, file, and forget.

The first step is to "fire it off" by sending in the resume as soon as possible after becoming aware of an open position.

The second step is to "follow up" within a couple of days by contacting the hiring manager or HR to confirm they received the resume and asking if they have any other questions.

The third step is to "file it" by systematically organizing all application materials and follow-up notes for future reference when applying for other roles.

The final step is to "forget it" and move on to pursuing new opportunities rather than obsessively waiting for a response, as many job postings may not result in an actual hire.

Welcome, listeners! The Old Jar Head is back with another podcast to help you achieve the best career possible. By simply following my advice, you're guaranteed to see significant improvements. Today, we're discussing valuable career lessons we can learn from a bankruptcy situation. Now, if you've been following recent news in the United States, you may be familiar with Yellow, a large trucking company that faced bankruptcy due to excessive debt and the impact of COVID-19. However, this discussion isn't about the company itself or the effects of the pandemic, but rather what we can learn about our own careers. When Yellow declared bankruptcy, over 20,000 employees were suddenly locked out and unable to work, even if they had loads ready to haul. This serves as a reminder that no matter how much you enjoy your current job or how well you've been treated, you could be just days away from losing it. Economic conditions or decisions made by senior management may lead to unexpected job loss. So, what can you do to avoid a career catastrophe if you find yourself in a similar situation? Here's some valuable advice: Start setting aside money from each paycheck to create a financial cushion. The amount you save should depend on your marketable skills. Those with high-demand skills may only need to save for a month, while others with less in-demand skills should aim for about six months. Continuously improve your skills to make yourself more valuable to potential employers. Consider learning new skills or staying updated in your industry. For example, truck drivers could benefit from developing coding skills. Build a strong professional network within your field and keep it active. This network should extend beyond your current coworkers. Engage with people from social or religious organizations and broaden your connections. This network can provide valuable advice or even job opportunities. Keep your resume up to date at all times. If you unexpectedly lose your job, having a polished resume ready will give you an advantage when searching for new opportunities. Competitors of companies experiencing closures often seek to hire the talent that was let go, so you want to be prepared and not miss out due to an outdated resume. Consider this situation as a potential opportunity to explore new career paths. While you may have enjoyed your previous work and company, it could be the perfect moment to make a change. Don't be afraid to think broadly and consider if there's something else you've always wanted to pursue. To recap, take immediate action by saving money, continuously improving your skills, building a diverse professional network, keeping an updated resume, and embracing the possibility of a new career path. If you feel that a career change is the right move for you, my book "Find a Job That Fits Your Life" will be an invaluable resource. It's available on Amazon, so be sure to check it out and read it.

Welcome to Be the ultimate podcast with Dennis Guzick, the Old Jar Head himself. I guarantee that if you follow my advice, it will greatly benefit your career. So why wouldn't you give it a listen? Today's episode is titled "Say Thanks." The inspiration for this topic came from a quote by Hemingway: "Be prepared to work without applause." In the Marine Corps, a simple "thanks" is given when you do something well. But what about in your workplace? Sometimes you might not receive the appreciation you deserve for a job well done. It could be because your boss is insecure, too busy, or just a poor leader. While you should expect a simple verbal thanks, relying too heavily on it can lead to problems. So what should you do if the recognition doesn't come? My advice is to continue doing a great job, at least in the short term. Don't let the lack of thanks affect your attitude or your performance. Going down that road will only harm your career and prevent you from getting recommendations or job security. However, if the lack of recognition truly bothers you, it might be time to have a conversation with your boss. Approach it in a non-confrontational manner and ask for feedback on your performance. You might discover areas where you can improve and understand why your efforts aren't being acknowledged. Alternatively, if your efforts are consistently being overlooked, it may be worth considering a transfer or finding a new job. Don't waste your time and energy in a place where you feel undervalued. Remember, not every leader will thank you for your work. It's just a fact of life. But if you find that your good works are consistently going unnoticed, it might be time to make a change. And when someone does something for you, even if they're being paid, remember to say thank you. It's one of the simplest and most effective ways to motivate and appreciate others. By expressing gratitude publicly, you also elevate yourself as a leader. That's all for today, folks. Thanks for listening. And if you're considering a career change, be sure to check out my book for helpful guidance and exercises. Thank you and goodbye. Thank you for listening! Welcome back to the "Be the Ultimate" podcast with Dennis Guzik, your go-to for guaranteed career advice. Today, we're diving into a topic that I hope you never have to face, but it's important to be prepared just in case. I'm talking about how to respond when someone accuses you of something at work, whether it's a colleague or a superior. We've all been there when someone throws a false accusation our way and it ignites our anger. Instead of immediately reacting, which could jeopardize your career, here's what you need to do.

First, take a moment to cool off. Don't respond right away. Allow yourself to transition from "hot anger" to "cold anger." This will help you tap into disciplined aggression and approach the situation rationally. Grab a pen and paper and write down exactly what was said to you. Be honest with yourself when analyzing if any parts of the accusation hold truth, if some are honest mistakes, or if there are intentional lies. Take your time to think through each accusation and craft a calm and well-thought-out response. It's often helpful to set it aside and review it the next morning for further edits.

When you have your response ready, address the person or people who made the accusation in a cool and rational manner. This is the best way to handle the situation. If the issue persists, you may need to escalate it, but you'll have your well-reasoned response at hand. It's worth noting that emotional issues are not best addressed via email due to possible misunderstandings. However, if necessary, this technique can still be applied effectively.

I personally have used this approach multiple times throughout my various careers, and it has always yielded positive results. Being able to come back the next day with a clear and logical explanation of your position is invaluable. So, while I hope you never have to use this advice, you now have a reliable way to handle accusations should they arise.

That's it for today's episode of the "Be the Ultimate" podcast. If you found this advice helpful, be sure to share it with your friends who are looking to excel in their careers. And if you or someone you know is asking the question "what's next?" in their career journey, whether just starting out or nearing retirement, consider checking out my book, "Find a Job That Fits Your Life," available on Amazon. It's a great resource for finding the answer to that question. Thank you for tuning in, and remember, with the right approach, you can handle any challenge that comes your way.

Dennis provides career advice based on personal experience. In this podcast he introduces a method for evaluating the suitability, feasibility, and acceptability of a plan. Suitability means assessing if the plan will achieve the desired outcome. Feasibility evaluates whether the plan is possible to execute with resources available. Acceptability assesses if the cost (money, time, resources) of the plan is acceptable to stakeholders. Applying these evaluations increases the chance of successfully executing a plan.

Lessons from Beethoven's life can be applied to any career or professional pursuit and serve as a reminder that success is attainable as long as you are willing to work for it.

Ludwig Van Beethoven is one of the most celebrated classical composers in history. Despite his incredible talent, he faced many challenges throughout his life, including poverty and poor health. The lessons we can take away from Beethoven's life are twofold. First, it is important to continually work at your craft if you want to be successful. Beethoven spent countless hours honing his skills, and his dedication paid off in the form of timeless masterpieces. Second, even when faced with adversity, it is important to persevere. Beethoven continued composing even after losing his hearing, proving that nothing is impossible if you set your mind to it.

What are the key takeaways from today's Be the Ultimate podcast?

First, if you work for a mildly bad boss, remember that as the boss, they can do things their way, as long as it's not illegal, immoral, or unsafe. If you find yourself in this situation, be careful about moving on, as you could land in a much worse place.

Second. If you work for a bad boss, then move on. But in a controlled way that maximizes your chance of landing a better job.

And third, if you find yourself working for that really bad boss. Let someone above the boss know what's going on and then get out of there fast if nothing's done about the problem. Never get involved with this bad boss's actions.

Exploding Job Offers It's no secret that job offers can be a little overwhelming. You may not know what to make of all the excitement, or you may feel like you're being pressured into making a decision. The thing is an exploding job offer isn't always a good thing. In fact, it's often a sign that the company is in trouble or that they're worried you might get snatched up by someone else. A reasonable offer should allow about a week or up to two weeks to be considered. More than that and filling the job may not be important or the job may even no longer exist. Thank you for listening! It can be tough to know how many interviews you need to go on before getting an offer.

You might think that the more interviews you go on, the better your chances of getting an offer, but this isn't always the case.

In fact, if you're a junior person going for your third interview or more, that could be a warning sign that the company is indecisive about who they want to hire.

Listen to today's podcast for more tips on how to know when you're ready for an offer.

So today I'm going to tell you about him and one of the several leadership lessons he taught me.

My radios were blaring out information and requests for information and I was trying to command the company. Now, Colonel Lesnowicz could easily have intervened and tried to help me, and with all his combat experience it must have been difficult for him not to have done that. But, he didn't. He took off his helmet, opened this flak jacket, and sat down At some point, there was a break and I looked over at him. He nodded and said, "You got this." Thank you for listening! Hi, my name is Dennis Guzik and I'm going to show you what's called bracketing or taking action in the face of uncertainty. We all come across tough decisions that we need to make but are uncertain about what course of action we should take. Bracketing is a way of breaking down your thoughts into two different paths and then choosing one based on which option has more positives than negatives for yourself. So let me walk you through an example so it makes sense.

So that got me to thinking if you replace the term firms with nations, you have nations become weak during periods of steady prosperity, hidden vulnerabilities accumulate under the surface delaying in a crisis is not a good idea. It makes me wonder whether or not we'd have the same situation in Ukraine. If it hadn't been this way, if those nations hadn't become weak on the steady prosperity, and allowed those vulnerabilities to increase. So how do we relate that to your career? After all, that's why you're listening to this old Jarhead ramblings it's about your career. So let's relate that in the same way to your career. Let's just say your career is in a period of steady prosperity. You're doing well. You're respected at work. You've gotten promotions, raises those sorts of things and something comes up and you don't wanna rock the boat. Thank you for listening! Please subscribe. If you’re feeling stuck in your job, I have a question for you.

Do you ever feel like something is missing? Like maybe there’s more to life than what you’re currently doing? Or do you sometimes wish that things were different at work but don’t know how to make it happen? You might be surprised by the answer.

The reason why so many people are in this position is that they didn't take an approach like this one. They just went out and got the job they wanted without thinking about whether or not it was right for them. And then when it doesn't feel good, they change jobs which is relatively easy compared to changing careers - which takes much longer and requires a lot of planning and effort on your part.

So if that's where you're at today, let me help give some clarity around what's going on with your career path and show how we can get from here to where you want to be! Let's do this together!
