Parenting /disciplining and moral development
Teaching a child to distinguish right from wrong and to behave accordingly is a good parenting.
Martin Hoffman(1970)believes that induction a discipline technique in which a parent uses reason and explanation is more positively related to moral development.
Various elements od discipline are Rules, punishments, rewards and consistency.
Rules are guidelines for socially acceptable behavior. Each family has its own set of rules.Family lays the foundation to teach and follow the rule. Rules have an educational value. They teach children about proper behavior.
Punishment is deterrent to misbehavior. It restricts inappropriate behavior. Punishment given for any wrong deed/behavior should be as per severity of act.Otherwise it creates anger in child and spoils the relation. Undesirable punishments to be avoided like threatening a child or depriving them of food. Desirable punishment method to use is Timeout method.
Rewards-It is a positive reinforcement for good behavior. They are given to motivate a child.Social rewards like praising a child, giving a hug, smiling at child or ruffling child's hair.
Consistency-It gives security to children. It gives clear idea of expected behavior. Parents should be consistent in setting limits on children.
