Only 9 days ago, on the 5th November 2023, ‘Grok’ was publicly released prompting us to think Elon Musk has entered the chat (bot).
This seemed like good contender timing, if it wasn’t for Sam Altman and Satya Nadella sharing the stage during OpenAI’s inaugural DevDay just two days later.
Does anyone else consider keeping pace with artificial intelligence is akin to that feeling of running in a dream?
In this episode, we unwind the key announcements and what this could mean for the future of humanity.

Topics:
On October 30, 2023, President Biden issued an Executive Order aimed at promoting safe, secure, and trustworthy development and utilization of AI technologies. This is a significant step towards regulating AI by establishing standards for AI safety and security. The order also mandates the extensive testing of powerful AI systems by third parties to minimize chances of unintended consequences
The SEC charged SolarWinds and its CISO, Timothy G. Brown, with fraud relating to the Sunburst cyberattack in 2020, alleging that they understated cybersecurity risks to stakeholders, thereby defrauding investors.
Summary:
Both the Executive Order on AI, and the SEC Filing on Cyber, bring to light the ever-evolving landscape of cybersecurity and AI technology, and the critical role of regulatory bodies in ensuring transparency, security, and responsible innovation in these domains.

Reskilling for a Technology Future with Thomas Mynott:
We have a very special connection to our latest guest, Thomas Mynott on Episode 8 of Dark Mode. Thomas actually introduced Ben and I about four years ago. Thomas is one of the lead sales managers at a company called WithYouWithMe, which was founded on veterans, transitioning away from the military and into corporate roles. What they've transformed into these days is helping people train and deploy in digital skills, across the globe - it's a very impressive story.
Thomas is an absolute legend. He has a lot of controversial ideas and a lot of really interesting insights into the critical skill shortage - including, that we already have the solution in training neurodiverse people, looking at other groups, such as veterans, former athletes, and even spouses and how we can actually look at the psychometric profiles, take the view of skills over talent because the talent's already there and training them into technology jobs.

Could you imagine starting a role as the Chief Security Officer at a global, industry-leading cyber security technology company, then two months later your company is in the media for being ‘hacked’ by a notorious adversarial group? Well, in this episode we have the pleasure of sitting down with Brett Winterford, the regional CSO for Okta, and embark on an empathic, insightful, and oar-inspiring journey to discuss the insider’s view of experiencing and managing such a complex event.
We also speak about ‘misinformation warfare’, the effects of over-sensationalized media, the resilience of incident responders - and Brett has perhaps one of the BEST ‘dark mode’ stories shared to date, recounting his 11 year stint commercializing a factory next to central station Sydney without approval, hosting a 14 year old Ed Sheeran and evangelizing the music and arts industry in his previous life.
Brett’s cool demeanor brings great insights into the life of a cyber security leader, offering up a great example of transferable skill sets in our profession, having been a pioneering security journalist, cyber strategist and now chief security officer at Okta.
