Boe shares how taking a risk attending an agricultural conference while he was an undergraduate resulted in opportunities that still haven’t stopped coming as he has stepped into leadership time and again. Boe has been involved numerous agricultural organizations from the local to the national level, including Farm Bureau Federation, New Mexico Cattle Growers’ Association, U.S. Cattlemen’s, Colfax County (NM) Soil and Water Conservation District. Florida’s population is growing faster than the rest of the country. Consequently, the US is losing many of its important habitats for wildlife. However, a solution may come from the livestock sector; with something called rangeland systems. This system enable ranches to sustainably raise cattle using Florida’s native vegetation, allowing these places to be profitable while maintaining -sometimes increasing- biodiversity in the region. UFAEC graduate student Cesar sat down with Dr. Hance Ellington, a wildlife scientist, to understand how they work, the benefits for society, and how people can support this type of production.

When it comes down to research, DNA and genetics are almost always implicated in it. Horse gaits have physical and genetic components to them. In this episode, Dr. Samantha Brooks, and graduate student Maddy Smithe, both in the UF/IFAS Department of Animal Sciences, discuss how artificial intelligence was used in their study of horse gaits. They want to discover which genes are responsible for gait in horses. AI is used to pinpoint certain joints to measure the horse’s stride. Without it, it would take weeks of going through the videos to get these measurements.

He and his team focused on new international students who did not know English at the time. The new students needed support navigating language barriers to understand what happens during a hurricane. The organization helped many students evacuate and to be welcomed by other Saudi Students Associations in other states. Their help was not only for students who were form Saudi, but they also helped other international students and local people to rebuild what was damaged during the hurricane.
