Episode 80 – Red Rose Market Hall Heroes. Making the most of our Northern Rail discount tickets, we crossed the border into deepest Lancashire to sample beers in and around the markets of Preston and Chorley. It was a thoroughly enjoyable day out: we were really impressed by the vibrancy and bustle of both towns, as well as the quality of the drinking venues available to locals and visitors alike.
Welcome back, you beautiful legends, to another episode of the podcast! This is Episode 79 –
Supping in Scarbados, where the sun might be questionable, but the pints are absolutely not.
This week, we’re rolling into Scarborough with thirsty intentions and a proper coastal pub crawl
on our minds. From the warm welcome at the Stumble Inn, to a few crafty delights in the Craft
Bar, we’re setting the pace early. We’ll soak up the history and heart of the town with stops at the newly reopened
Alma, the Golden Ball, and the Merchant, before heading to the legendary Leeds Arms.
Expect seaside stories, questionable decisions, top-tier supping, and a lot of laughs along the
way. So grab yourself a drink, get comfy, and join us as we raise a glass to Scarborough — or as
we like to call it… Scarbados.
Part 1 = Episode 78 - This ain't Texas this is Rochdale, the mission to find new pubs and places continues - the podcast trio all meet up for a day in a very sunny Rochdale to tick off a wonderful range of heritage pubs, micros a brewery tap plus one that we will not be returning to! Throw in a stunning gothic town hall, friendly locals and a full Lancashire breakfast - listen to our take on a grand day out.
Episode 78 Part 2 -- In Part 2, we continue our journey around Rochdale's beery haunts, fail to find any Manchester Tarts and have a very memorable final pint. We stumble on a Brewery tap popular with football fans - some great micros and drink in the former haunt of Co Op legends
In Part 2 we talk about new ventures in Whitby Chapels, York's ancient houses and plan a podcast trip to the home of the Co op (and apparently a number of great pubs and bars) Rochdale.
Our mission to save our pubs and visit new towns and pubs continues - in this episode we discuss self serve Guiness machines at Cheltenham, new pub ticks across the UK including Victorean gems in London, Edinburgh and north Stoke, ancient revamps in York and Whitby, one of the country's best pubs in Leeds, and try and find something positive to report about Selby (Spoons and Doghouse save us)
Episode 76 Save our pubs - our try-annuary mission to seek out some new ground. Reports in the press report that a pub a day is closing at the moment so the MalTravAle trio are on a mission to support our pubs and visit as many new pubs and bars as we can over the next month – on this episode we report on trips to London, Lincoln Doncaster a great beer destination Congleton.

A beery catch-up about what’s been in the news over the last few months, as always, there are tantrums, disputes, and amicable disagreements. We cover a fair bit of ground in Part 1 we catch up on recent beers, Bruce continues his gastronomic tour of our sceptred isle- pie n mash features this week - we cover steelwork pubs and banked pints, Isle of Man and Canadian brewing giants and the withdrawal of steaks, mixed grills and gammons from our largest pub chain.
In Part 2 we catch up on Bruce's many travels in seek of the perfect Guinness, fine ales and pub interiors, plus local gastronomic delicacies including Rochdale's Rag Pudding and overhyped Borough Market sausage rolls among many!

As one of us works for and spends most of his time on Britain’s wonderful rail network, we dedicate Episode 68 to ‘ales on the rails’ and also have a go at taking on the Telegraph listing out best rail station bars and pubs, London, Rochdale, Newcastle and Edinburgh all feature. We also find time to debate a famous IPA named after an Indian city being rolled out in our largest pub chain and report on some fine beers supped in the Sun back in the hometown of Malton
We head back to Doncaster and find the hidden beer gem which is the Doncaster Brewery Tap sample all 6 cask beers and find time to wobble back to the station via the Little Plough - a fantastic pub that takes you back to the 1930's but with reet good Yorkshire beers
Episode 67 Tom Puddings, Salt n Pepper pots and a dip in the Donny Dozen
Another Northern Trains discount day tripper and a two part trip to Goole and the UK’s newest city, Doncaster. We find a warm welcome in the Tom Pudding micro bar, dip into the Donny Dozen real ale trail enjoying a complimentary Sunday buffet and a pub stuck in the 1930’s. For a short while all 3 members of the Podcast crew sit at the same table drinking fine beer on Platform 3 of Doncaster station. Warning there are no references to Sam Smiths in this edition – Spoons feature as well as squirrel pies.

Episode 65 – Loitering In Lancashire Mill Towns – after a break over Xmas we’re back with a report from Bruce and Nick on a rail ale trip to Phoenix Nights country – unfortunately not too many highlights - though they do discover a great micro bar in Chorley Market and the UK’s oldest cider pub in deepest Bolton and find our loo of the year so far. We also find time to celebrate the new that Brewing is returning to Cockermouth with the new that Jennings has new owners and they are not a megla maniac big macro.

We discuss the decline of brewing and beer in the city during the 80’s and phoenix like rebirth and continued growth from the 90’s onwards into to a city now of over 50 working breweries and The Guardian proclaims is possibly the Beer capital of Britain

Half term holiday resulted in a chance for a MalTravAle Podcast face to face get together that could not be missed even if it was wet miserable February Sunday – the plan was to have a reunion with Tadcaster and put boots on the ground in a town we have mentioned a lot in our podcast episodes – especially the complex, ongoing legend that is Sam Smiths and its owner and then call in York on the way home to meet up with Bruce, try and catch some of the England Rugby match against Italy and revisit some of the fantastic pubs we covered in the York Podcast episodes – and to be honest one or two for me – a 1st time visit now I’m exiled in Staffordshire.

Episode 28 – Stone a beer town once again – another pre Christmas bimble this time a very enjoyable Saturday afternoon visiting some very pubs old and new in the Staffordshire town of Stone – in its brewing heyday was a rival for the beer metropolis which is nearby Burton – now a really resurgent brewing and pub scene makes it well worth a visit.
Episode 27 – Three men on a train - a Christmas bimble revisiting the TransPennine Real Ale Trail revisiting our Episode 6 lock down episode thinking what a pub crawl along the famed rail trail might be like in 2021 – we live the dream on a very wet December Saturday – with pints sunk in Dewsbury, Huddersfield, Slawit & Stalybridge
Episode 26 -The Pubs of Christmas past, present and the future as we reach the first Sunday of Advent we are looking towards Yuletide celebrations and hopefully restriction free visits to some of our favourite pubs (well 2 each), as well as a catch up re beery highlights and news and plans for MalTravAle Live next week on the TransPennine Ale Trail
Episode 25 – Micros in Macc – a planned trip to Macclesfield Food Festival unfortunately cancelled at the last minute turned into a rather nice beery ramble around Macclesfield’s growing Micro Bar offer – some real gems (with a couple of Stoke Micro bars thrown in for good measure). A visit to the bars of Treacle Town is highly recommended – Don’t worry the usual arguments about Wetherspoons and Sam Smiths of course feature in this episode as well and a quick insight into the Beery pleasures of Blackpool.
Episode 24 – Beer Hunting in Yorkshire’s Rhubarb Triangle – 9 pints in 9 pubs in and around Wakey and Castleford – lots of fine cask ales, open fires and whippets guaranteed. Nick evens ventures off into adjunct style beers and fills us in on a sole Malton pub crawl – no doubt Bruce will also have some foody highlights from their West Yorkshire trundle.

MalTravAle Podcast travels across the oceans – well a short hop to the Channel Islands and a Beery Trip around the fair Isle of Jersey - @liberationbrewery will be in abundance, as will Seans/Shauns! Some really interesting pubs to talk about including a real classic the Lamplighter in St Helier plus no sight of a Wetherspoons or Sam Smiths, but the usual beer news and beery highlights rom the team.

Episode 19 – Summer Catch Up – this podcast was recorded over the August Bank Holiday 2021 – mostly live in Malton and York as our three podcast amigos met up after the summer break, includes a fleeting visit to Scarborough, a day at the Malton Food Festival – including cask pints of Yorkshire Pudding Beer and final a trip to York to add a couple of recent shop conversion bars to our never ending recommendations for great drinking venues in York.
Podcast Episode 18 this week-a trip around our glorious Lake District - so many great pubs and brewers to cover, so we are splitting 3 ways- Nick the 5 best scenic pubs, Mike 5 great breweries & where to drink a pint of their finest & Bruce 5 best foody pubs – this will be a 2 parter – so look out for part 2 next week or so
Episode 17 - A bottle of Dog and a Schooner please-Pints on the Tyne - our humble view of the best pubs to visit in Durham & the Toon -includes ice cream in Whitley Bay & mention of a vibrant brewing scene. Our beery trip around the North East will also pay homage to 2 regional delicacies The Stottie & The Parmo (though Singing Hinnies will also get a mention) both fine booze soakers. Warning Sam Smiths may be mentioned!
Episode 16 – MalTravAle on the Road and Live – after several months of Zoom drinking, the three of us finally get to sit around a table, drink too many beers and twaddle on – this Episode is a combination of 5 live recordings around a number of pub and tap tables – covering the fine towns of York, Harrogate and Knaresborough and a visit to one of the legendary homes of modern Yorkshire brewing – Roosters – a tale of 13 pubs and over 22 different beers that made our voices go very funny – hope you enjoy some of this, as much as we did!

Episode 13 – York Pubs Part 3 – we complete our York tribology as we virtually stagger through to beyond 40 pub recommendations, we also take time to discuss pub beer gardens, shandy and once again, pork pies feature strongly. We finish by setting ourselves the challenge of each choosing out top 3 York pubs
Episode 12 – York Pub Crawl part 2 – ‘North of the River’. Following on from our ramble around Micklegate, Bishy Road and all things York Brewery, 4* hotels and toilets in pubs, we continue our jaunt round the pub capital of Britain; York – this time focusing on the area around the Minster – Europe’s largest Gothic building and a mighty fine one it is – we also find time to catch up on pub reopening, more on Yorkshire pudding beer and a very famous umbrella shop in London – and to kick it all off we have an exclusive release from the very talented Sophie Hope and her, about to be released, single ‘ Humour me’.
Episode 11 Easter Reflection – a sit back and relax discussion this week as we reflect on our first 10 episodes and look forward to pub visits (outdoor) starting again next week, we revisit our Moon Under Water choices from Episode 2 and yearn and yarn about our unlocking first cask pints, we also find time to discuss Beery Easter eggs, @SeabrookCrisps, @WXM_lager, the lack of breweries in Wales and Jam Roly Poly & Custard Pale ale
Episode 10 Smugglers, ice cream, steam trains & beer – North Yorkshire Moors and Coast, in this week’s podcast we start at Malton and then jump on the best steam railway in the world NYMR transporting the beer team from Pickering towards Whitby and then down the coast calling at Robin Hoods Bay and Scarborough in our North York Moors & Coast episode
MaltTravAle Episode 9 – York – City of Romans, Vikings and pints. This week we take a gentle ramble around the West of York (we will be returning in a future episode to do east of the river) visiting a smorgasbord of Jorvik’s finest hostelries (got to get a bit of Viking in). We also discuss the paucity of breweries in York, wax lyrical about Yorkshire Pudding Ale and Cream Egg beers and delve into the myth that there are enough pubs in York to visit a different one every day of the year!
A slight change of tack this week we talk a little bit of brewery and beer history and delve into Nick’s extensive collection of Brewerymania. We remember and discuss some of the classic beer branding of our youth – so lots of cheesy beery strap lines, some iconic images of red triangles and huntsmen and quite a lot of thankfully, forgotten, mass produced lagers mentioned. In our Beery news catch up this week; Lakes Brewing Co, pub reopening, International Women’s day and Thornbridge/Adnams Collabs get a mention.
Episode 7 – Leeds City of Beer
In this weeks podcast we try the impossible and pick out 20 or so great pubs and bars from the 560+ that now serve this fine city – we talk Tetleys, heritage pubs, rough pubs, brewery taps and lots of great beer as well as the now compulsory pub toilet tale! We also talk in rapture about another must visit pub Whitelocks
MaltTravAle Podcast Episode 6 this week focuses on the legendary Trans Pennine Real Ale Trail, our chosen version starts with a Cheeky pint in the Arndale, Manchester and hits the buffers at the Scarbrough Taps in Leeds with a few stops in between!
We talk Mild, Heavy Woollen, Sarah Lancashire and ramble on about some stupendous Yorkshire and Lancashire watering holes, two pubs with the longest and shortest names (possibly) and wax lyrical about the Stalybridge Original Buffet Bar - to steal a quote 'simply a magnificent place to sit and drink beer'.
Episode 5 - this week the best pubs in Hull and the East Riding we are tackling Selby, Bridlington, Driffield, Beverley and the great port of Kingston upon Hull, there be mentions of @CAMRA_Official and their 50th birthday, @OldMillBrewery, @samsmithsbeer & scraps butties ,white telephone boxes, scraps Hockney landscapes and the legend that is Nellies (aka The White Horse Beverley)
Episode 4 - focus this week is ‘Past Pilgrimages’ – we have decided there are so many pubs and towns to talk about we will split our best beer pilgrimages over the next 3 Episodes - so this week we take the roads and rails to the Dales - ‘Heading West from York’
We virtually visit Tadcaster, Ilkley, Otley, Thirsk, Ripon, Masham, Keighley, Haworth, Shipley and Saltaire and Skipton. Recommending great pubs, reminiscing on pre-lock down trips with the usual blend of Yorkshire wit and wisdom.
In this episode we also chat about ‘Spoons’ should they be included in beery pilgrimages, catch up on some Beer news and start a bit of thread about Craft v Cask
