On Season 2, Episode 6 of Around The Association, I’m joined by my good friend and fellow college hoops connoisseur, J.D. Crabtree! Crabtree is a key contributor to Krause House, and when he’s not cheering on his Tennessee Volunteers, he’s building out the DAO’s fan-led media platform, Watch Gameday.

Speaking of Watch Gameday, the Krause House community has once again voted on the topics for this week’s special college edition of the podcast. So, without further ado…

Game of the Week

5 UCLA Bruins vs. #11 Arizona Wildcats (3:10)

The Bruins took a trip down to the desert for a Saturday afternoon matinee in Tucson against their Pac-12 rival, Arizona Wildcats. Bayesian and Crabtree offer a deep-dive into UCLA’s lack of depth and offensive struggles, plus dig into how Zona’s formidable frontcourt was able to end the Bruins 14-game winning streak.

Team of the Week

14 Gonzaga Bulldogs (20:46)

The Zags once again find themselves inside the Top 15 of the AP Poll more than 20 games into the season, but have struggled against other national powers and recently suffered an upset at the hands of Loyola Marymount ending their 75-game home winning streak. Bayesian and Crabtree break down how this year’s Gonzaga team possesses a significantly different identity than the program’s perennial contenders of seasons past.

Player of the Week
Jarace Walker, Houston Cougars (42:52)

The five-star, McDonald’s All-American is having a tremendous freshman campaign and proving to be a major contributor for Vegas’ national championship favorite, Houston Cougars. Bayesian and Crabtree dissect Walker’s budding game, elite athleticism, and promising 3&D skill set, as well as, debate NBA player comps for the consensus soon-to-be Top 10 NBA Draft pick.

On the first episode of Season 2, Christian sits down with former UCLA point guard turned serial tech entrepreneur, Mustafa Abdul-Hamid.

Mustafa played his college basketball at UCLA from 2006-2010 where he went to back-to-back Final Fours and was teammates with future NBA All-Stars including Russell Westbrook, Kevin Love, and Jrue Holiday.

After capping off his senior season with a buzzer beating 3-pointer over Isaiah Thomas and the Washington Huskies, Mustafa headed overseas and embarked on a 4-year journey in professional basketball that took him through Serbia, France, Slovenia, Germany, and Lebanon from 2010-2014.

After satisfying his dreams of playing professional basketball, Mustafa returned to the States where he enrolled in graduate school at Stanford. It was during his time in Palo Alto that Mustafa would launch two companies (both of which would eventually be acquired) and meet his wife (who would soon become his business partner).

One of the companies, Boost, began as mobile app for youth basketball players to get coaching feedback from professional players. After several persevering years, Mustafa would pivot from the youth coaching model to a college basketball analytics product. And from there, Boost skyrocketed.

From 2019-2021, Boost would go on to work with some of the most prominent Div. 1 college basketball programs in the country - including his alma mater UCLA, Florida, and Louisville among many others. Boost quickly became a pioneer in the sports industry for its use of natural language generation and data-driven storytelling, ultimately leading to an acquisition in late-2021.

With a focus on advanced analytics and automated sports content, Boost is now partnering with some of the largest and most powerful sports media properties in the world. And the vision that Mustafa laid out for himself years prior on the courts in Westwood are now falling into place.

Oh! And we haven’t even mentioned the best part about this episode. Originally from St. Louis, Christian and Mustafa both attended the same high school (shoutout to MICDS)! Though despite being 5 years apart, the two had never met. In fact, the two have now “known” each other for close to 10 years - and worked together at Boost for the past 3 - but hadn’t met in-person until the day before sitting down to record this podcast. Enjoy!

On Episode 19, Christian is joined by Flex and Commodore (Co-Founders of Krause House DAO) to talk some hoops and catch up about what’s going on in their world. The fellas kick things off by discussing their trip to Las Vegas Summer League and why it’s the place to see-and-be-seen in the basketball world during the offseason. They also break down what they saw from Top 3 picks Paolo Banchero, Chet Holmgren, and Jabari Smith and share which players’ games impressed them the most live and in-person.

Of course, no NBA offseason conversation would be complete without talking free agency and fake trades. The guys discuss which moves have stood out to them and which moves have left them scratching their heads. They also share their opinions about Minnesota’s move to go all-in on Rudy Gobert, and do a deep dive on the philosophies and strategies behind team ownership and putting together contenders. Particularly, they address the diverging arguments of whether owners should try to put the best product on the court at all times or whether they should go through years of rebuilding in the ultimate quest for a championship.

The crew wraps up NBA talk by discussing the unmitigated disaster that is the Brooklyn Nets and question the legitimacy of Kevin Durant’s trade request. Could it simply be a ploy to get Nets’ ownership to commit long-term to Kyrie Irving? They also touch on the brewing Russell Westbrook saga in Los Angeles and make predictions about how much longer Russ will be donning the Lakers’ purple and gold.

Finally, they tie everything together with a little BIG3 chatter, dive into what it’s been like owning the Ball Hogs, and share their biggest learnings and takeaways from the whole experience thus far. We also touch on all of the exciting ways in which the Krause House community has been contributing to the team and collaborating with HC Rick Barry and the players on everything from player and scouting analytics to media coverage and sponsorship deals.

On Episode 18, Christian is joined by Sports Illustrated Writer & NBA Draft Expert, Jeremy Woo! They discuss all the latest offseason buzz around the association, including the last minute shakeup atop the NBA Draft, as well as, trade rumors surrounding KD's recent request out of Brooklyn.

Jeremy explains why he would've selected Jabari Smith Jr. with the 1st overall pick, why Paolo Banchero (Christian's top player) also has perennial All-Star potential, and why there are still plenty of question marks surrounding Chet Holmgren. They also analyze other lottery picks - notably Jaden Ivey, Dyson Daniels, and Jeremy Sochan - who landed in favorable positions and predict why any of them could end up being the best players from this draft class.

Our conversation about the NBA's best young cores then gets interrupted by a Rudy Gobert-sized Woj bomb, and you get our real time reactions to Minnesota going ALL IN on an Ant, KAT, and Rudy big three... News flash Timberwolves fans, you gave up a lot.

The two tie up draft talk by outlining the pitfalls of going the G League Ignite route and why the Shaedon Sharpe vs. Jaden Hardy juxtaposition could lead recruits down a dangerous path of sitting out in order to maximize their NBA Draft potential.

After that they touch on all the craziness surrounding the two New York teams so far this summer, including the Knicks giving Jalen Brunson the 4th largest contract in franchise history and Kevin Durant's shocking trade request out of BK. Following up on the latter, the guys break down why the Suns' package centered around Ayton, Bridges, and future picks makes the most sense in both the short- and long-term for the Nets.

Finally, the fellas wrap things up by looking ahead to the 2023 NBA Draft class, chat about the generational potential of French phenom Victor Wembanyama, and touch on WTF has happened with the development of former top recruit Emoni Bates.

On Episode 16, Christian is joined by Rob and Trey to preview the 2022 NBA Finals between the Boston Celtics and the Golden State Warriors! The fellas break down the highly anticipated matchup from a strategy and analytics perspective, dive into various defensive schemes the Celtics may deploy to slow down the Warriors’ aerial assault, and touch on some key offensive adjustments the Warriors may need to rely on more than they have so far throughout the playoffs.

The key to this series is going to be Boston’s bigs (looking at you Al Horford and Robert Williams) and more specifically whether they’ll be able to move their feet on the perimeter and stifle the Warriors’ small ball pick-and-roll enough to stay on the floor. However, Ime Udoka and Co. have showcased an extraordinary ability to adjust on the fly and to a variety of offensive schemes so far in this year’s playoffs, and the guys key in on one particular seldom-used lineup that Boston could unleash in this series to keep up with Golden State’s guard-heavy attack.

But the most shocking development of all?! Christian, Rob, and Trey all agreed on their predicted winner! We’re rolling with * in 6! Oh wait, was that blurred out? Guess you’ll have to tune in to find out ;)

On Episode 14, Christian and Trey are joined by three-year NBA veteran Kelan Martin! The former Butler Bulldog and Big East All-American stops by to discuss life in the NBA and take us behind-the-scenes of his career with the Minnesota Timberwolves, Indiana Pacers, and Boston Celtics.

Originally recruited by Brad Stevens, Kelan recounts his journey from 3-star recruit to 3-year starter at Butler University, where he led the Bulldogs to four consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances and graduated as the school’s 2nd all-time leading scorer.

After going through the NBA Draft process and working out for over a dozen teams, Kelan explains the decision-making process that led him to sign with one of the top European teams over NBA training camp invites, and how it was ultimately one of the best career moves he ever made.

Eventually making his way back to the States after one year abroad, Kelan relives the national coming out party he experienced at 2019 Las Vegas Summer League that landed him his first NBA contract with the Minnesota Timberwolves.

In what was no doubt one of the most memorable (and nerve wracking) weeks of his life, Kelan describes those fateful first two nights of the 2019 season during which he made his NBA debut against the Charlotte Hornets after nearly being called upon to shut down Kyrie Irving’s 50-point outburst on opening night.

We wrap up Part 1 of this two-part series by picking Kelan’s brain about the hectic lifestyle of a two-way player, the toughest players he’s had to play against in the NBA, as well as, what it’s like to guard superstars like Bradley Beal, Trae Young, and even LeBron James!

The fellas kick things off by filing a missing person’s report for Jayson Tatum, praising 1st quarter Jaylen Brown, and discussing Big Al Horford’s incredible resurgence. On Episode 6, we’re joined by 20-year NBA veteran Phil Weber. Arguably the NBA’s first player development coach, Phil spent 9 seasons on the sidelines with the Phoenix Suns under Mike D’Antoni. He was an integral part of the Suns’ back-to-back trips to the Western Conference Finals in ‘05 and ‘06, as well as, an offensive guru whose early adoption of analytics led to the Suns’ iconic small ball, run-and-gun style of play that jump started the modern NBA.

In the 1st episode of this two-part series, we dive into Phil’s national championship playing days under Jimmy V, his rise through the college coaching ranks from Florida to Hawai’i and everywhere in between, and, of course, his eventual ascent to the NBA under then-HC Danny Ainge. He even shares some personal stories about the legendary Kobe Bryant and his unique friendship with the Wizard of Westwood, John Wooden.

All this and much, much more on Episode 6!

If you’ve been wondering “wtf is Krause House,” then this episode is for you. Bayesian Baller is joined in-studio by Flex Chapman and Commodore (Co-Founders of the Krause House) to explain how they’re going to buy and operate a fan-owned NBA team as a DAO.

They discuss why the NBA is ripe for Web3 disruption, how Krause House differs from other “fan-owned” teams like the Green Bay Packers, and what benefits a community-owned franchise has over a traditional team structure.

They also save time for NBA talk, including Andrew Wiggins’ controversial selection as an All-Star starter plus mid-season bets to reach the Conference Finals.

• The Celtics are in 10th place despite having two of the brightest young wings in the league. Is this a Tatum-Brown issue, or a larger organizational issue? (32:15)
