Islands has a new record out called "What Occurs" and Islands lead singer Nick Thorburn couldn't be more stoked to release it Friday June 21st.
Lead singer Nick Thorburn leans against the jet black wall of LA's "Club Zebulon" and languidly sips his White Claw spritzer.
"I love the new record. It's called "What Occurs"" he offers, blue eyes piercing through the hazy dimness of the hipster mecca.
"But the thing is, I spent dozens of hours on this album, I put my friends on it, we collabed on it, it was a beautiful experience putting it together, but here's the thing - A.I. might do a better job than bands."
Nick pours himself into a booth at the back of the bar and slides all the way back, like a greased up newborn, to the booth jukebox, where he shuffles through potential selections with his nimble fingers.
"The Doors, Bon Jovi, John Cale, Paula Abdul. All the new music sucks" he sputters as he snaps his fingers for a waiter.
"Garcon! I'm about to spill!"
The server makes their way over as Nick, like a petulant little puck, pours his White Claw spritzer all over the table.
"Want a tip, lady? Don't buy no Brooklyn Bridges!"
Nick stands and starts "flossing".
"My s$$%t blows all that s%^&t out of the water!"
All of Club Zebulon is now looking at Nick.
"But me and Jon went on a roadtrip and man... AI might just be better than bandssssss!"
Nick gyrates like Weiland at a sock-hop.
"... I don't care what Jon says, and how good AI writes songs about the 2 Jons Podcast in many genres, it may be better, but can it do THISSSSSS????

Redd Kross and Current Melvins’ Steven McDonald is a foundational part of LA's punk scene, and a brilliant songwriter and guitar player. Redd Cross’s new Double Album, “Self-Titled Album” kicks ass, and Steven was generous enough to give The Jons an early listen. The album soars to heights untold. Held together with harmonies Steven and his brother Jeff McDonald blend together so solidly it allows the band to explore the entire matrix of rock music and yet, remain Redd Cross. The album has many twists and turns, not unlike the twists and literal turns this episode of Two Jons Takes. Like no other episode before it: it contains driver-swaps, spontaneous hitchhiker pickups, and Steven eventually taking the wheel of the FARTVAN(!) and yet it is all held together with a beautiful tapestry of lefts, and no rights. Truly a groundbreaking episode.

Classic yarns followed by jaw-dropping anecdotes. It's got everything you love from our Jons. Right?

Picture this: It's the rainiest day in LA for the last 20 years. The Jons are behind the wheel of the Fartvan. They have a full tank of gas and as good as it gets guest Mr. Todd Barry.They stop at the famous "the Grove" and walk around in search of margaritas, only to settle (happily!) for some Arnold Palmers. Todd razzes the Two Jons and is very characteristically acerbic. Todd is staying at Hollywood and Vine, where she broke my little bottle of... Love Potion number 9. How fitting that the guy needed the love potion no. 9 to get hard, and now the Hollywood/Vine area is littered with dick pill stores. And piss. Quite a witches brew! A lot like this episode, which has been known to "aid performance". And again we didn't and don't turn right.
Between then two of them, Jonah Ray and Alex Winter have done it all. found a true bond making their latest film "Destroy All Neighbors", which Jon D appears in! Sure the boys are fartvanning' around East LA again, but wouldn't you? West LA being on the opposite side of the earth and all? We got a storm-of-the-century goin' on over here, what do you want? The convo rocks, and with TWO accomplished guests, it covers decades of cool details you probably didn't know, I'd tell you but I don't wanna spoil the ep, it's a good one.
Nick Wiger, host of Doughboys and Get Played. One of the greatest to ever do it, has done it, it being the Two Jons podcast. Wiger lives on the “west” side of Los Angeles, far from the hustle and bustle of the jazz-soaked East Side. The Jons poke, prod, cajole, and threaten Nick until he opens up about himself, his writing, his relationship to the fans, his struggles with Mitch (none?) and his charity work (maybe too much?). In this ep the Jons are burnin' dinosaur bones with the multi-talented Jessy Hodges. Are we on York, or Fig? The squad in the Fartvan(tm) does not care. The vibes are always good in East LA, unless you have to on-ramp the 110 in Highland Park from a dead stop. Which I believe would require a right turn before the on-ramp, so you should never have to see (or hear) that specific maneuver on THIS show. The 2nd ever J-O-N Jon is Jon Hamm. He joins favorite guest Jon Gabrus who was the 1st J-O-N Jon guest to make it technically 3 Jons Don’t Make a Right. Or do they? Are there rules for three Jons that are different from the Rightless regularity of Two Jons? Well, you wouldn’t know it from the way Tall Jon drives. Left after left after left after left he takes, with Top Gun Maverick, Mad Men, Confess, Fletch’s Jon Hamm in tow no less. His left-only driving flies in the face of what could be a really anarchic, chaotic episode, and ends up being a classic ep. Sometimes form is important to art. Had we colored outside the lines, no one would’ve blamed us, but by staying in line with one of the major ongoing themes of the podcast (left turns only) the podcast audience is held in the hosts hands. What works, works because it’s framed, essentially by the audiences expectations of the podcast format, i.e. 2 Jons turning left in the Fartvan. Barring the fact that a third Jon (Mr. Hamm) bastardizes the integrity of the format, throwing the podcast into abstraction making it “too much”, it could’ve easily thrown the focus off of the movie star guest, and onto a randomness who’s entertainment can and will end in hopeless depravity and human being transformed into robo-pigs at the least, Ladies and gentlemen, Mark Rothko sucks as a painter, but he definitely kept it boring as hell and never tried to impress. The Two Jons audience similarly maps their own experience onto the dumb canvas he slathered with stupid paint. Here, Jon D and Tall Jon and Jon Hamm “land the damn plane” with such precision, we reel from the episodes existence even as we engage with its content. A clean experience. We go by Jon Hamms old apartments and grab coffee! A classic!
Friend of Jons Seth Morris hops in the Fartvan to show the Jons the finer points of Pasadena history. Pasadena, home of the Rosebowl (who cares?) and also Van Halen Hales from it. Some really cool stuff here, 2 Jons fans, as the boys reminisce about formative years on the east coast. It's emotional, so thank the lord these boys are so supportive. Listen as Seth and the Jons hold space for each other's feelings and maintain a safe space for each other within the Fartvan. One can take big risks when there's a safety net under one's fall. Seth takes leap after leap only to find a Jon to his left and a Jon to his right, but we don't take those on this podcast!

The Jons welcome brilliant actor writer and comedian Gil Ozeri into the Fartvan and the boys rock down to Glendales main strip, Brand Blvd, home of the Americana at Brand, car dealerships, tiki bars, office spaces, and the billboards of many local accident lawyers. Gil talks tales of uncles and aunts, growing up, and he shares his favorite LA drives. (Spoiler: It’s Mulholland). Gil regales the Jons with tales of mirth and woe, Tall Jon drives the Fartvan like the breaking wind, and we together feel the breaking Autumn, the tusks of the Winter Walrus breach and take their first icy lap, and the whiskers of waning summertime wisp into the water, and we neigh the harvest nigh, and take till none is left, yet never never never turning right!
The absolute beast, Beck Bennet, joins the Jons for a couple laps around East LA; Highland Park, Eagle Rock, the works. Beck came locked n loaded, he knows the show, he knows the vibe and he jumps in fully caffeinated. This episode holds a special place in this engineer's heart as the Jons drive very close to my house(ADU).
The multi-cross-disciplined talent Rob Zabrecky joins the Jons for a jaunt around Burbank AND BEYOND. Rob's from The Bank, so he knows the spots, the history and most importantly, the goss. It's a different kind of episode, where the Jons are only driving the Fartvan in an academic sense. When you have someone as connected to the city as Rob, it's clear who's actually driving in the truest sense, if not literal.
The legendarily hilarious Megan Amram joins the Jons for a leap into the the unknown: West LA - a part of the city you simply have no reason to visit if you don't have health insurance. Megan's resume would overburden the "episode description" field I'm typing in, but I WILL SAY she's responsible for the "Today was the day Donald Trump finally became president" meme you will likely see in your Twitter timeline until the site finally dies. I'm not 100% on the "Wagons West" reference in the title but if you've read this far, now you know.

The Burger Boy himself spreads love light and laughter as the Jons stop by the LaBianca murder house to celebrate Leslie Van Houten’s release! Some may argue that doing this is not right, so we’ve agreed to not turn that way!
The magical Mary Elizabeth Ellis joins 2 Jons for a lap around Hollywood with a convo so interesting you’ll start to feel like you’re in the Fartvan, which Tall Jon completely fails to gas up before the record! Jon D and Mary Elizabeth are pissed, but forgive and forget for the sake of the drive. After all, in this crazy world, a pinch of civility is all we have left, which is the only way we turn!
Potentially the most action packed episode yet, Joe Mande and Noah Garfinkel are two of the funniest writers working, or rather, not working (because of the WGA strike). There's never been more numerous, or intense left turns than in today's episode. Figurative, literal, paranormal... the pivots are frankly shocking. And it's all done so effortlessly, until violence breaks out in the Fartvan. Listen, learn, and turn left. Support writers and support the strike, it affects all of us!

You knew it had to be comin’, but the Two(2) Jons finally brave the San Fernando Valley with the indomitable, prolific, Carl Tart. From the West Burbank Popeyes, to Keys on Van Nuys, the Valley represents a lot of different vibes to a lot of different people. Annexed in 1915, the San Fernando Valley represents the Louisiana Purchase of Los Angeles history. It doubled the size of the city and raised Los Angeles to the level of a city-state possessed of its own agricultural region. You’re gonna find out just how much history our Jons have out here in the wild north-west of Los Angeles proper: sites, locations, triggering memories of friends' anecdotes. This episode is an onion, layers upon layers of earned wisdom and as always, a sheer void of right turns.
The lovely and talented Aparna Nancherla joins the Jons on an excursion to Pasadena. Home of Van Halen, Jackie Robinson, and Sirhan Sirhan. How will they navigate this old-money suburb (which is the headquarters of America's aerospace industry) without the ability to turn right? Is it possible they've bitten off more than they can chew? Will they be disappeared by the Pasadena Police Department like so many interlopers before them? One thing's for certain, right turns remain OFF the table. In this sea of Teslas, who's to say exactly how dangerous that is? Be amazed at the wildlife they encounter, confounded by the grumpiness of the local street vendors, and bring your $25 entry fee for the flea market where I saw Logan Paul once. Pasadena is truly another world for our Jons; the textures are alien and the tension is extreme. It is, after all, personified by the Big Lebowski himself in the eponymous film.
The Jons are back with the brilliant Jason Mantzoukas, who made the ingenious suggestion that we pick him up for the podcast AFTER DARK! That's right cool cats, this Two Jons takes place during the SEXY NIGHTTIME. LA at night is like jazz. The traffic has it's own rhythm, flowing like a trumpet line against the thrumming bass buzz of humans in clubs and bars, making out, wearing sexy outfits, day trading and farting. Jason and The Jons bebop up to the Sunset Strip, the piano heats up into a blistering solo, many neon signs are visible, cutting lines in Tall Jon's vision as he plays the FARTVAN like a sax, moving in and out of traffic like Coltrane at Newport '67, reinventing sound with his eyes closed, the Jons make a rhythmic left at Doheny and end up highhattin' it to Larchmont of all places. But that's where jazz can take you... All places. This episode is pure night, and you can feel it. Hard and soft like the wind. Like when you pass the La Brea Tar Pits and get a whiff of the tar. Jon and Jon journey into the gritty Hollywood Flats with their guest, the hilarious Sarah Silverman. The enormous line for Funko Pops is seen once again. What fascination do people have with these? Are they as cool as the people the gang talks to think they are? The Jons and Sarah don't really get into it. Instead they stop at an abandoned McDonalds, followed by a functioning McDonalds, ordering typical fare. Sarah a small fries, Jon D a Diet Coke and an apple pie. Nothing for Tall Jon, though he paid for it all like a gentleman. The Fart Van once again provides perfect studio quality sound for you to enjoy. It took a while to get right, but we just take lefts!
