Real People, Real Property, Real Problems, Realistic Solutions – Home:Work is the UK’s brightest property podcast magazine dedicated to home buyers, homeowners, investors and developers. Every fortnight Property Developer, Broadcaster and Journalist Richard Black talks to people on a Property journey, from self-builders to seasoned developers, and downsizers to first-time buyers; they all have a property story to tell. Alongside Richard, they turn the messes into successes. Also in the podcast, fantastic tips and treats on how to get the best from the property, you’re buying, lessons in bagging a bargain and punching down the purchase price, and the odd development opportunity also drops into the show. With the latest news from the Property market, views and insight in where it’s headed, Home:Work is a must-listen for everyone, wherever you are on the property ladder.
Guest: Jonathan Wood, Sowerbys Estate Agents, Norfolk Cladding costs, Leasehold Laws, Communal living becoming unpopular and stories of excessive charges from freeholders have all cast a cloud over the simple lock up and leave lifestyle living in an apartment can bring. So is the market for flats well….flat? or is it springing up all over the place? Jonathan and I took a look around two top floor offerings at either end of the market.
Guest: Craig Rowe, Flat Renovator and TV Presenter Whether you’re on the top rung of the ladder of the bottom layer of the housing market, an offering of an apartment can seem like a good idea.
One man I met through my presenting role at QVC shopping channel is also a presenter both on QVC and Channel 4’s A Place in the Sun. Craig Rowe has only ever developed and renovated flats, he told me his opinions on lock up and leave living… Guest: Simon Gilvey, Broadland Consultants Mortgage and Independent Financial Advisers Broadland Consultants Ltd is a firm of Independent Mortgage Advisors and Independent Financial Advisors based in the heart of Norfolk, whose team have been servicing their clients’ financial advice needs for over 25 years.

Property is never far from his mind and alongside the odd rental, Craig has made a fantastic job of renovating leasehold flats, an area of the property market struggling against issues including cladding, changes in leaseholder laws and avoidance of communal living. Before all of those issues crept in, Craig created a fantastic restful retreat from a seventies, South London, second-floor duplex. Richard went to meet him to get a look around. Also on the programme, a round-up of news making the headlines in the property markets right now:
Business is booming for bungalows according to many estate agents throughout the UK. Prices in some areas for a single-storey living are rising at double the rate of other properties. Traditionally bungalows are around 5% cheaper than a two-storey home in the same area, but according to the property website Zoopla, demand for bungalows was 63 per cent higher than the five-year average. Estate agents suggest the amount of opportunity a bungalow can bring is a major driver in what a family might look for, a larger footprint, potential to extend up and out and often an overall bigger plot, not overlooked by neighbouring bungalows.
Lenders have broadly welcomed new government plans to allow state benefits to be considered when calculating affordability for a mortgage. The new proposal named ‘benefits to bricks’ was announced a short time ago bringing about a change in rules to allow around 30 billion a year paid out in welfare payments to count towards income in a new mortgage application. The banking industry has raised reservations however has broadly welcomed the proposal whilst awaiting further detail.
An opportunity to buy a modest property in the Historic Home of Horseracing has appeared. The Exning Estate in Newmarket Suffolk has hit the market. The estate consists of over 1700 acres, a substantial principle house with manicured grounds a further 60 residential homes, three studs and an equine hospital and even a 155-acre solar farm. The property is on the market through Savills and will attract a potential stamp duty bill of just under six million pounds if sold at its £50 million pound price tag.
And Richard Black and Jonathan Wood of Sowerbys Estate Agents Norfolk mull over the Status Quo of the housing market in these most unique of times.

This special of Home Away from Home: Work looks at the decades-old love affair between UK property buyers and the desire to own a home in the sun. We specifically home in on an area very popular with overseas homeowners from all over northern Europe – the eastern Costa del Sol. We talk to ‘A Place in the Sun’s Jasmine Harman about her knowledge and experience in the area, an estate agent from the local town of Competa shows us around two very different villas and an Englishman tells us why he bought and the changes he’s seen in his life since he made the step of investing overseas. In this episodeGuest: Jasmine Harman – ‘A Place in the Sun’ Channel 4
The second of two special editions of the show Home Away from Home:Work…On the programme today, we record this overseas special in the Eastern Costa del Sol, Spain.
Richard Black, property developer, broadcaster and journalist and will be looking at what opportunities this part of Europe can bring UK house hunters. Jonathan Wood has been an estate agent selling high end homes in the UK for over 20 years, he’s here to find out what is making the market in Spain move, there was a time only a few years ago, Spain was property paradise lost, but now is it everything under the sun? First let me introduce you to the part of Spain we’re in. Known as the Axarquia region, we find ourselves on the eastern side of the Costa del Sol. It’s around an hour from Malaga and two hours from the more built up side of the coast with resorts such as Marbella and Torremolinos often hogging the limelight. Behind the bright lights of the western end, this area offers more relaxed and tranquil surroundings. Against the backdrop of dramatic mountain ranges the coastal resorts offer some of the best climates in Europe. Known as the balcony of Europe the mountains of northern Africa can be seen on a clear day just across the Mediterranean sea. One person who has been here hunting for property dozens of times is Jasmine Harman from Channel 4’s ‘A Place in the Sun’, here’s what she had to say about the area.
When people talk property; they talk to Home:Work and when Property people talk, they talk to Richard Black.
Guest 2 – Eva Maria Sigvardt, Agente Inmobiliario Estate Agent + 34 638 29 05 46 info@competahomes.com http://www.competahomes.com/ (www.competahomes.com) Avd. Constitución nº 21 Bajo 29754 - Cómpeta (Málaga)
Eva Maria is Danish but is an Estate Agent in the área. She talks transparently about what people are buying, the reasons for the demand, and the issues that homebuyers might face.
‘John’ – Villa Owner John purchased his home just before the first lockdown was announced. It’s beautiful; a two bedroomed single-storey villa in the countryside above the village with the reputation for having ‘The best climate in Europe’.
John details his buying journey and gives us the facts, fears, benefits and burdens of owning a home abroad.
This special of Home Away from Home: Work is devoted to a lady who’s spent almost twenty years making our overseas property dreams come true…Jasmine Harman started her job presenting Channel 4’s ‘A Place in the Sun’ 18 years ago. For over two decades the programme, Jasmine and her colleagues on the show, have made dozens and dozens of dreams come true as budding Brits realised their desires of home owning abroad was more than just the preserve of the rich and famous. I managed to find a gap in Jasmine Harman’s schedule, in between returning from Gran Canaria and flying off to Tenerife, and I started by asking her how our demands as overseas property buyers have changed in the time she’s been presenting ‘A Place in the Sun’ If you are a new listener to Home:Work, we would love to hear from you.
