My podcast will deal with many different areas of optometry. It will particularly deal with the visual effects of digital screen time, working and learning through digital and Esports. Appropriate glasses (especially for digital interaction) contact lenses and vision training will be discussed. Specific patient outcomes will also be talked about. Some episodes will also cover diseases of the eye that occur. My 39 years of optometry will be explored.
This episode will described three patients who were recently seen in my office on an emergency basis for a scratched scratched corneas (the front surface of the eye). They entered the office with very significant pain. The normal way to treat these patients is to place a patch over the eye. This episode describes the use of bandage contact lenses to remedy the pain they walked in with. A bandage contact lens is a regular soft contact lens with almost no prescription. In addition to the contact lens, antibiotics were prescribed over the course of a couple of days to prevent infection. All three patient’s’ corneas were healed within a couple of days. I removed the contact lens at that time and there wasn’t any pain. The patients and I were most happy with the results
A patient came in for an eye examination because of headaches and blurred vision. In this case I discovered a blurred optic nerve as well as a peripheral vision field defect in each eye indicating a neurological problem in the brain. She was referred immediately to an ophthalmologist who imaged the brain an discovered a large aneurysm. The patient went into surgery immediately where the aneurysm ruptured, losing her eye but the patient’s life was saved with no other problems. If she would have waited a few weeks the neurologist stated she probably would have died.
