Hello, I’m Sol Hobbs, and this is The Burning Man podcast, episode one. I’d like to offer a little introduction/insight into the inspiration for my podcast, and a little back story on the main topic of this episode.

My pandemic story is pretty much in line with every experience that has brought me to where I am in life, to becoming the burning man, (my CB handle) but also what has kind of been a life theme for me, because I have my moms drive and will power. I've always had a knack. Be it, surfing, sailing, travel, childhood, whatever- it's been interesting.

So, let's get into it. My pandemic year was a tough one. I tell this story for context. I'm still not over it. Prior to the path I'm on now, I had been an over-the-road truck driver, working as an independent contractor for most of the last plus years. I drove to California and back to Texas, hauling wine and craft beers from Napa and the central coast.

I saw some amazing things prior to that ending, such as San Fransisco nearly abandoned(Ghost town) mid-day. I caught covid while working and my company basically hung me out to dry with no support and no plan. So I brought myself home, emptied out my truck, and it was a wrap.

So, like everybody else, I came home to lockdown and had a lot of time on my hands. I chose to use it for improving the things I didn’t have time for while working.

I lost my mom in August 6 days before my birthday, and my lifemate of 20 years plus in April 2 days after her birthday suddenly.

I'm still reeling, there is a hole in my life that is unfillable,. And even now, every day she's infused in my day. I miss her, and though the topic I chose for today is dating after 50, I can't imagine that for myself right now.

I'm thankful for each memory, and there were so many. I'm thankful for my family, who supported us throughout. And the love they give me daily now, and for the love we shared. We survived a major hurricane and the struggle in its aftermath, the great recession, bankruptcy, being stranded in El Paso, escaping the trap of extended stay, bad luck, good luck, and everything life is made of. We were blessed in what we had, and love is love!

As I said, I can't imagine dating right now, and no matter how much I say that,

It seems to stop thirsty women have no sensitivity to that. A particular incident, well, several actually is what inspired this topic.

First- the friend coming over for her birthday. (12yrs of non-continuous friendship, and no support)

Then- the just get over it woman(no words at all, just catch-all phrases)

We are old enough to not lie to ourselves, and ladies, please know, I also know men my age who are just as dysfunctional from my gender position)

What I see is, when you live by yourself, and the only advice you take is your own, it leaves yo lacking.

A lack of filter is not an asset

· You don’t have to say everything out loudo I can't speak for anyone but myself, when I say I don’t need to hear so much of you upfront.o Everyone is so eager to overshare as if that presents them in the best light

Also, you have to understand that before you rush out and serial date, that it’s a good idea to do some self-reflection.

o If you want to have sex, lead with sex, practically demand sex, how do I not understand that it's how you are all the time.o And why is it so many people over 50 don’t understand that silence is not exactly an endorsement.

When you want to talk about the guys you’ve dated, how do I not feel like Im on your assembly line?

Don’t ignore stop signs!

Crazy doesn’t become sane – it just gets crazier

A woman who has never been married….

People who have a lifetime of their “type” and are still trying to date them

Treating a person like a piece of meat is not okay, and not gender-specific.

o I never saw myself as anything but normal, but that’s not what women have thought. (until we break up)o I'm comfortable as me, but I know from past failures that there is more to love than good looks. (besides, rumor has it that if you just want arm candy, it am app or two away)

o Accept That There Will Be Good Dates And Bad Dates. ...

o Know Your Deal Breakers. ...

o Don't Badmouth Your Ex. ...

o Write Your "Type" on a Piece of Paper and Burn It. ...

o Don't Write Someone Off Before You Even Meet Them. ...

o Don't Be Bitter about the "Age" Thing. ...

o Make Sure You're Really Ready To Date.

At the very least, understand and be comfortable with who you are.

o Don’t use glamor shots or social media filters, or pictures from your 30’s o If that’s who you see in the mirror, you have a lot to work out stillo Understand that people are not responsible for what you think or feel-you are 100%, so carry that into reality.

It's really disingenuous to say and act as an independent woman at your convenience
