Stokemeter

Stokemeter began in 2009 as a livestream where professional athletes were interviewed by the audience. During that time, we learned that both the person being interviewed and the interviewee learned from each other. Today, Stokemeter carries on that learning tradition by interviewing people from all walks of life in the hopes that listeners can learn from each other. Different disciplines bring different ways of viewing the world and through that expanded view, we hope that it benefits you and those around you.

James Brunson is the head coach of The North Philadelphia Nomads rugby team in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Having played rugby, he helped Larry Conlan set up a team. After budget cuts forced school closures, many students were assigned to attend the different schools. Because there were few spots on the various athletic teams, many students were at risk. These students and others, formed the Nomads. The program has grown substantially since then and has led to players improving their grades, develop leadership skills, overcoming external obstacles, and gaining college scholarships. Their story has been made into the movie: “The Nomads”.

As a Program Manager for the DC Department of Youth Rehabilitation Services (DYRS), he is a mentor to youth to “Formulate goals, objectives and strategies for the Credible Messenger Mentoring Program utilizing the Restorative Justice and Positive Youth Development Models for the rehabilitation of adolescents in the juvenile correctional setting.” Despite over two decades in the justice system, he admonishes all to make the best of their situation, regardless of where you find yourself.

She discusses how grief is not linear and how it will find even the most resilient if they don’t let it out; how she went through “identity reconstruction” after her loss; and perhaps most importantly, the noble life lived by her husband, who his team said “Would follow him into battle with a spoon as long as he led the team”. Rodney Smith Jr. started a lawn business as a means to put himself through college. He saw an elderly woman trying to mow her lawn and offered to help, free of charge. That simple act has led him to offer free lawn care services to the elderly, single mothers, and veterans. Since that time, he has invited youth from around the world to join in serving others through the 50-yard challenge (mowing 50 lawns for free). Now, nearly 4,000 kids in all 50 states and 8 countries around the world have accepted the challenge making a positive impact in the communities they live. After experiencing the birth of her first child, Hannah Hardy-Jones, CEO of the Kite Program, began to experience mania. Weeks afterwards, she was diagnosed with postpartum bipolar disorder.
