We are dads and brothers who love to fly fish. We're trying to tackle parenting and family in the same way we tackle our beloved fly fishing hobby: we're figuring it out as we go along. We talk about faith, family, fishing, and the intermingling of it all. Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/dadsonthefly/support

In this episode, we chat with Javier Fabrega of Marsh Sessions. Javier is a father of three that escapes to saltwater every chance he gets to chase redfish and other species in Northeast Florida. Growing up in the Republic of Panama, Javier has a deep connection to the ocean, but it wasn't until 2015, in Jacksonville Beach, FL, that he discovered the world of fly fishing. He was drawn to the welcoming and passionate fly fishing community, and has since started Marsh Sessions where he highlights all the great things about fly fishing, but not necessarily the fish. Hear more about Javier's story on this week's episode.

March Madness has always been a huge deal in our home. Every year since we were young we spent time filling out our brackets and then watching the big dance and pulling for our teams to pull the upset. We figured what better way to celebrate March Madness this year than creating our very own fly bracket. We've put together 64 well known flies, seeded them, and then invited some of our friends to help us vote for each match up. Full of controversy, listen in as we discuss the match ups and eventually choose the 2024 Dads On The Fly Ultimate Fly Bracket champion.
Let us know which match ups we got wrong and your opinions on your favorite flies.

In this episode, we recap our recent trip to the Clinch River in eastern Tennessee. After hanging out and meeting Chad Fouts, manager of The Smoky Mountain Angler, a fly shop in Gatlinburg and Knoxville, he told us we had to get over to the Knoxville area to see this incredible river. We took him up on the opportunity this past weekend and ended up fishing on one of the rainiest days we'd ever had on the water. However, it didn't slow the fishing down, at least on the boat that we weren't in. Hear more about our day on The Clinch in today's episode.

In this episode, we chat with Eric Locker, @aktroutspey on Instagram and he teaches us all about spey fishing. Having never spey casted before, Eric helps us learn all there is to know and get started in spey fishing. Eric grew up with a love of bird hunting and fly fishing. After serving in camp ministry for several years the opportunity to do that opened up for him and his family in Alaska. He immediately fell in love with the area and all it has to offer for the outdoorsman. He now gets the chance to share that love with others as a hunting and fishing guide at All Alaska Outdoors in Soldotna, AK on the Kenai Peninsula. In this episode, we speak with Ty Walker of Smoke In Chimneys. Several years ago Ty and his family moved to New Castle, Virginia to bring back to life a small private trout hatchery. The hatchery, originally built in the 1930s and run by the state of Virginia, had not been in use for a while until Ty and his family chose to take a leap of faith and revive it. The hatchery is unique in that it is completely gravity and spring fed. You will find no pumps and purifiers on the property as the water that comes from the rock is as clean as you can find which helps to produce some of the tastiest trout on the market. In our conversation Ty tells stories about the learning curve he overcame to manage a trout hatchery and what he's learned about the species he loves to fish for the most.

We were introduced to Dr. Bob Ledda through a video that Wild Fly Productions created while on a trip to Dr. Bob’s lodge. After hearing about his story we knew it was one we wanted to introduce our listeners to. Dr. Bob fell in love with Alaska the moment he stepped off a plane there the first time. He finished medical school and found a job working in the ER on the Kenai Peninsula where he purchases some land and set up his lodge. As a beaver pilot with a thirst for ultimate adventures in the unmarred beauty of Alaska Dr. Bob shares his story with us about his greatest passions.

In this episode, Joshua and Caleb are joined by Pastor Heath Davis of Pinnacle Church in Canton, NC. Local to western North Carolina, Heath grew up fishing with his family in some of our favorite streams. Before entering the ministry, Heath served ten years in the U.S. Military as a Marine. After service in the Marines, he braved public education and taught at Canton Middle School. Now, he serves as the Lead Pastor of Pinnacle Church which he planted in 2006. Heath fell in love with the river at an early age, but after his time in the marines and moving back to the mountains of North Carolina he pursued that love as a white water kayaker. It wasn't until a recent trip to Montana and catching fish on the Bighorn River that he became "hooked" on trout on the fly.
In this conversation we discuss the connections between white water kayaking and fly fishing, we're reminded of some of the early frustrations of new anglers, and we hear one of the wildest stories of learning you're a father.

In this episode, Joshua and Caleb chat with a long time friend of the podcast, Herb Theodore of Anadromous Fly Company. Herb has been fishing as long as he can remember and started fly fishing as a teenager. He was fortunate enough to grow up with a creek in his back yard which led him to chase trout from an early age. He is a native Michigander and loves chasing Lake Michigan run salmon and steelhead. Herb tells us the story of growing up fly fishing and now running the fly tying tool brand Anadromous Fly Company. Herb shares what he loves about fly fishing, running a tying tools company, and using it to support the next generation.

As we approach the end of the year, it is often a time of reflection. Part of that, we think, needs to be examining why we do what we do. In this flashback episode from a couple of years ago, Joshua and Caleb try to define their whys. Looking at why you do what you do leads to evaluating whether your efforts are truly worth it. We look at why we fish, why we do a podcast, why we bought a boat, and why we make the decisions we do as parents. Hopefully, this episode will inspire you to reflect on your whys.

In this episode, we speak with a guest unlike any other we've had before. Movie director Joshua Caldwell explains everything that goes into directing and creating a phenomenal movie with fly fishing at its heart. "Mending The Line" is a story about wounded veteran John Colter, who returns to the States, still carrying the demons of war, hauntingly disturbed by the everyday expectations of friendships and love interests. In Livingston, Montana, he meets Ike, a surly, headstrong fly-fisherman more than twice his age, and Lucy, a talented photographer turned librarian who reads aloud to veterans, both damaged in their own way. While getting treatment for his physical and psychological wounds, Colter wants only to re-enlist, to have something to die for. But the real challenge is finding something to live for.
In our conversation with Josh, we discuss all that goes into making a great film and hear some great behind-the-scenes stories.
"Mending The Line" will be available on Digital and On Demand starting September 26th.

In this episode, Joshua and Caleb speak with Brandon Bailes of Panther Branch Bugs. Brandon is a NASA Engineering Technician by day and a fly-tying maniac at night. He resides in North Alabama with his wife and two sons, surrounded by countless small streams and cold and warm water creeks that they get to enjoy all year round.
Brandon grew up wading, fishing, and exploring these small hidden gems, and still, to this day, it’s his favorite type of water to fish due to the challenges it presents and the intimacy of being in close quarters with the quarry. He began fly fishing early but didn’t begin tying until he was an adult, mainly as a creative outlet to relax in the evenings. Brandon has become a master at tying spun deer hair poppers, amongst other amazing flies. He has been featured in Fly Tyer magazine and Field and Stream, where he was titled "The Michelangelo of Deer-Hair Flies."
In our conversation, we dive into Brandon's early love of fly fishing and go into depth on his process of creating beautiful deer hair bugs.

In this episode, Joshua and Caleb chat with Chris Cain of Malfour Outfitters. Chris grew up the son of a pastor in rural north Alabama, where his passions for Jesus and the outdoors were born. Throughout his upbringing, God saw fit to place men in Chris’s life to cultivate those passions and disciple him in faith and fishing. In 2013, Chris married his beloved Jana, and they moved to north Texas to start a family and begin a life in ministry. Chris served the local church for over eight years through various pastor roles. He now works in the fishing industry, manufacturing and selling rods and reels for Seaborn Outfitters and Bates Fishing Co. Chris and Jana have two boys, Wilder and Sawyer, and currently reside in Mountain Home, AR. For over a year, Chris has founded and is the lead guide for Malfour Outfitters. Malfour’s mission is to leverage the magnificence of creation in turning the hearts of people to their Heavenly Father, the God of creation. This is done by offering exceptional outdoor experiences and unique pastoral care to create a different pace in a different place so that when men leave, they do so with a different perspective.
In this conversation, we discuss:
-Dry Run Creek in northern Arkansas
-tips for dads taking kids fishing
-why early success for kids is important
-the beauty of an unhurried life
and much more.

Nic Hall is a Marine veteran, Dad, and avid fly-fishing angler in Denver, Colorado. He mainly targets carp in urban environments and trout throughout Colorado. When not fishing, he volunteers with several nonprofits, engaging youth via the Trout Unlimited "Trout in the Classroom" program and teaching fly fishing to underrepresented minorities through fly fishing camps. He also serves as a Board Member of the Denver chapter of Trout Unlimited, where efforts are made to restore and conserve the Denver South Platte River.
Nic started fly fishing three years ago when a friend from West Virginia visited him in Colorado. Growing up as an urban kid in Baltimore, fly fishing was one of those things that didn't seem attainable. He didn't see anyone who looked like him fly fishing, so he never tried or was introduced to it until 2020.
As he becomes a more proficient angler, part of his goal is to share the experience with kids who look like him, ultimately helping them learn about angling, conservation, and overcoming adversity. He hopes that through his nonprofit volunteer work, he can preach stewardship on the water and get new anglers excited about fishing, protecting public lands, and conserving our waterways. Hence, they are here for the next generation.
In this episode, Joshua and Caleb chat with Nic about:
-all things carp fishing, especially in an urban environment
-minority representation in fly fishing
-giving back through fly fishing nonprofits
-tips for taking very young children fishing
and much more.

In this episode, Joshua and Caleb join Bo Brooks and Greg Camacho on location at Pirate Waters Outfitter in Washington, NC. We got to fish with Bo and Greg in the morning and then record a podcast in the afternoon. We learn all about Bo and Greg's fly fishing journeys and what it's been like for them to start an outdoor outfitter together.
Bo has been fishing his whole life. After years of climbing cell phone towers, he took the plunge to create an outdoor outfitter in the town he has grown to love. But the shop is about more than just providing amazing apparel and gear. It's truly about loving a community.
Greg runs Camacho Rod Works out of Pirate Waters' shop and has been building custom fly rods for over two years. He also is the leader of the Washington chapter of YoungLife.
Bo and Greg were great hosts for Dads On The Fly and we look forward to fishing with them again in the future.
