The Damned were formed in London in 1976. Several of its founding members had previously played together in another early Punk group, Masters of the Backside. Masters was managed by the Pistol’s famed manager Malcolm Mclaren, and included future Damned members Dave Vanian (born David Lett), Captain Sensible (Raymond Burns) and Rat Scabies (Chris Millar), as well as future Pretenders lead Chrissie Hynde. Brian James was the drummer in a band called London SS, which is largely remembered for housing, not only James, but also future Clash member, Mick Jones and future Generation X member, Tony James.

A growing snowball of Steinman’s artistic endeavors and experiences from his late teens and early 20s, “Total Eclipse of the Heart” arrived more like an avalanche of creative ideas on the doorsteps of The Power Station in 1982.
The writer/producer/engineer/composer was seemingly an unlikely pairing for the lead singer on the track, Bonnie Tyler. A country-rock artist from the Welsh town of Mumbles, Tyler had achieved charting success through a completely different style of rock. Despite this difference, or perhaps because of it, “Total Eclipse of the Heart” became something else entirely.

The early eighties saw the rise of Iron Maiden. One of the most successful groups to emerge from the new wave of British heavy metal, by the beginning of 1983 Maiden had already released three classic albums: Iron Maiden, Killers, and Number of the Beast. The band underwent a number of lineup changes in their early years, including the replacement of vocalist Paul Di’Anno with Bruce Dickinson and drummer Clive Burr with Nicko McBrain in 1982. By the time Iron Maiden entered the recording studio to work on their fourth album, Piece of Mind, the band had a stable lineup that would last throughout the rest of the decade. Not long into the sessions, Maiden would record one of their most beloved songs: “The Trooper.”

Adam Steele and Rob from mastering.com are at the Cloud Booth discussing the affordable equipment that is available today. They are using the new Cloud lifter X, which is a transformer-based Cloud lifter, and they are impressed with the extra zing it adds to the vocals.
They recall their own experiences of starting out in the industry, with Adam’s first microphone being an AKG C1000 and Rob’s being a Behringer BE1, which he admits was not very good. They both joke about the age-old advice of using an SM57 on everything, which still holds true to this day.

Disco may have been the hottest sound of the late seventies, but in the summer of 1979, it was facing a powerful backlash. In the midst of this tension, one of the genre’s most innovative groups, CHIC, released “Good Times” – an exuberantly joyful song which would prove that dance music could be creative, complex, brilliantly produced, and incredibly funky. While the song may not have been able to save disco, it undeniably shaped the future of popular music for the next decade and beyond. Creative artists continually looked to CHIC’s track for inspiration, influencing the development of New Wave, and Hip Hop, and leading it to become one of the most sampled, inspiring, and important tracks in popular music history.

In 1984, Frankie Goes to Hollywood’s debut single was dominating the charts, while simultaneously banned from the airwaves by the BBC. The song was a synth-pop masterpiece, and took its time to get there. Producer Trevor Horn worked through several versions of the song and a changing lineup of musicians to get the desired sound for the “Relax” – a song which would be used to launch his new record label, ZTT, to the public. Despite a slow start and censorship by the BBC, “Relax” became one of the decade’s most important and superbly produced records.

In 1966, Wilson Pickett entered FAME studios in Muscle Shoals to record some of his most famous songs of all time, including the now legendary – “Mustang Sally.” Originally written by Pickett’s former Falcons bandmate, Sir Mack Rice, Pickett’s version, produced by Atlantic Records’ Jerry Wexler and FAME studios owner Rick Hall, took a great Rhythm and Blues hit to mainstream success, with the talents of the studio’s incredible house musicians.

Marc Bolan’s T. Rex initially formed as Tyrannosaurus Rex in 1967. Rapidly establishing themselves as darlings of the underground scene, thanks to an exhilarating blend of pixie whimsy and idiosyncratic song structures, that hippy duo – Bolan and drummer pal Steve Peregrin Took – metamorphosed into T. Rex in 1970 and became the pioneering spirit of the emergent glam rock movement, which Bolan jumped on to just before his friend David Bowie.

Donna Summer is famous for her disco and pop career, but before she hit the big time she was already an accomplished singer who sang in musicals, folk opera and in the studio as a session musician. The Boston-born singer started out in a rock band before moving to central Europe to make a living. She was singing in the musical ‘Hair’ in Munich when she came to the attention of Moroder’s writing partner Pete Belotte. Like most of Summer’s early disco hits, I Feel Love was written and produced by Giorgio Moroder and Pete Bellotte.

“Message in a Bottle” was one of the songs presented by Sting, although the song’s captivating guitar riff was not entirely new to the band. They had heard him playing around with it with a different melody while on tour. Guitarist Andy Summers explained in 1981: “Sting had that riff for a while, but there was another tune with it originally. He'd been fiddling about with it during our first American tour. Finally, he rearranged the riff slightly and came up with the song.” After only a week in the studio, the Police premiered the song at a concert at Hatfield Polytechnic for the BBC’s “Rock Goes to College.”

In the 1980s, the futuristic sounds of synthesizers and electronic instruments were everywhere, but only a few years before (in the late seventies) punk music had been dominating the popular music scene with its aggressive, DIY, guitar driven sounds. In the transition from this raw, rock ‘n roll sound to a sci-fi dreamscape of futuristic synthesizers, we find Gary Numan and his 1979 hit single “Cars.”

Pat Mastelotto is a highly acclaimed drummer and percussionist who has made significant contributions to the world of music. Born in 1955 in California, Mastelotto began playing the drums at the age of 10 and quickly developed a passion for the instrument. He went on to study music at Southwestern College in Chula Vista, California, and later joined the band Mr. Mister, where he gained widespread recognition for his technical proficiency and innovative playing style.
Over the years, Mastelotto has collaborated with a wide range of artists and bands, including King Crimson, XTC, David Sylvian, and The Rembrandts. He is widely respected for his ability to fuse different genres and styles of music, blending rock, jazz, and experimental sounds to create something truly unique.

James Brown was called “the Godfather of Soul,” “Soul Brother No. 1,” “Mr. Dynamite,” and “the Minister of Super Heavy Funk.” He was also known as “the hardest working man in show business,” and “King of the One-Nighters,” because at one time he performed as many as 350 gigs a year.

But in 1987, the band’s indie sound collided with a pop aesthetic that captured audiences and reminded the world that popular music could still be art. Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me (the band’s seventh studio album) gave the band their first top 40 album on the Billboard 200. In Barry Walsh’s review for Slant magazine, he compared the ambitious double-sided album to another eclectic and lengthy pop endeavor - the Beatles’ “White Album” - and concluded. “Cure gives the listener the kind of roller-coaster rush that only great pop can provide—they take you all the way through the amusement park, plying you with the sweetest cotton candy, until you wind up giddy and disoriented in the hall of mirrors.” Within this thrilling journey, the third single to be released from the album, “Just Like Heaven” gave the band their first top 40 single and first real American hit.

In 1942, Bing Crosby introduced a new Christmas classic to the world – “White Christmas.” The masterpiece of the legendary Tin Pan Alley composer Irving Berlin, “White Christmas” not only broke sales records for the next 80 years, it also changed the landscape of American Popular music. In a world centered on sheet music and songwriting, the song not only proved itself as a paragon composition – one which could be beautifully performed by hundreds of artists for more than a half of a century – but also as a landmark sound recording. Today, Radiohead continues to be admired as one of the few bands that continues to innovate and renew itself. It almost single-handedly has kept rock relevant in the 21st century, when the genre has largely gone out of fashion.
Radiohead’s stellar reputation is to a large degree based on the band’s most famous albums, their third, OK Computer (1997) and their fourth, Kid A (2000), both of which won a Grammy Award for Best Alternative Album. It is less well-known in the US that it was in fact the band’s second album, The Bends, released in 1995, that launched Radiohead’s experimental side and established their ambitious new musical direction.

Today the influence of reggae is everywhere, and a world without it would be unthinkable. However, until the early seventies, reggae was virtually unknown in most of the world.
Reggae originated in relative isolation in Jamaica in the late 1960s, and when it was first heard in Europe and North America, it sounded truly revolutionary. It was a completely new sound that changed the course of music almost as much as rock ‘n roll had done a decade earlier.
However, reggae might not have caught on like a wildfire around the world had it not been introduced by an extraordinary man, who was both an extremely charismatic performer and one of the greatest singers and songwriters who ever lived. His name was, of course, Bob Marley.

When the Cranberries were first discovered in the early nineties they had triggered a bidding war between major record labels and seemed poised for certain success. However, after recording their first album, things seemed far less secure. In 1993, The Cranberries had released their second single, “Linger,” to a disappointing response in the UK. Just when the band feared they were about to be dropped by the label, “Linger” became a surprise sensation in the US. From that moment, The Cranberries were on their way to becoming one of the most important indie-pop bands of the decade.

In the mid-fifties, rock ‘n roll was emerging onto the popular music landscape, as wider audiences began to discover the energy and vitality of rhythm and blues records. While many of the first rock ‘n roll performers (like Elvis Presley) performed covers of songs written by others, Little Richard was both a performer and a songwriter. One of his most important hits was the song “Tutti Frutti” which he co-wrote with Dororthy LeBostrie – a song that captured a defining moment for rock and roll history.

In 1997, the members of Foo Fighters convened after a Holiday break and decided to re-record their The Color and the Shape album. Not only did it afford the band a second chance to create an epic album that would bring the band both critical and commercial success, but it also gave them the chance to include a song that had previously not been planned for the album – “Everlong.” Despite its late addition, “Everlong” has gone on to become one of the band’s most lasting and powerful tracks.

Michael Jackson’s career began in 1965, with his family vocal group – the Jackson 5. In 1968, the group was picked up by Motown and by decade’s end, they were some of the label’s biggest acts. Even though he was the youngest brother of the group, Michael quickly emerged as the leading star. He began releasing solo albums in 1972 with Motown records, while still performing and recording with Jackson 5: Got to Be There, and Ben (both in 1972), Music & Me (1973), and Forever, Michael in 1975.

Noel Hogan is an Irish musician and record producer best known as the lead guitarist and co-songwriter of the Irish alt-rock band the Cranberries. Hogan formed the Cranberries with his brother Mike and drummer Fergal Lawler in 1989. The group recruited Dolores O’Riordan as singer soon after forming. The band went on to sell in excess of 40 million records worldwide. In total, Hogan has released eight albums with the Cranberries, most of which were produce by Stephen Street.

Today, listeners are still captivated by “Love Will Tear Us Apart,” its dark authenticity seemingly inseparable from the tragedy that preceded its release. As Len Brown observed for NME in 1990:
“Ian Curtis was no more by the time Closer and ‘Love Will Tear Us Apart’ reached us, which makes it more difficult to measure their true merit objectively. During his lifetime, Joy Division colonised only the Independent charts. After he’d hanged himself, in the early hours of Sunday May 18, 1980, ‘Love Will Tear Us Apart’ reached number 13 in the UK singles charts, selling 160,000 copies; Closer reached six in the album charts.”
However, the song’s legacy extends far beyond that of a dark voyeurism. Its lasting influence has been recounted time and again by both musicians (The Cure, U2, Radiohead, Nine Inch Nails) and music critics. NME even named the song the greatest single of all time in 2002. In the earliest moments of the post-punk era, “Love Will Tear Us Apart” and Joy Division offered a radical new sound which enveloped Curtis’ groundbreaking, brutally honest, lyrical writing and would influence generations of musicians to come.

“Dancing Queen” was written by Benny and Björn, and manager Stig Anderson. They credit George McCrae’s 1974 disco hit, “Rock Your Baby” as a major inspiration. Under the working title of “Boogaloo”, Benny played the instrumental track for his wife Frida who was brought to tears by the sound. She recalled: “Benny came home with a tape of the backing track and played it for me. I thought it was so enormously beautiful that I started to cry.”

“Let’s Dance” becomes a contemporary imagining of the radical spirit of rock and roll that had characterized the genre’s birth. It rejects the evolution of rock towards music intended primarily for listening – a paradigm in which Bowie had already proven his skill – and returns it to its origins on the dance floor. In hindsight, we can see the qualities that made it a massive success, but at the time, it was a risky calculation.

From a simple recording of David Bowie on the Ukulele, “Lust for Life” was extrapolated into the instantly-recognizable song we know today. Rolling Stone placed it in The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time in 2004—and yet again in 2021—when the list was re-evaluated and re-ranked.
“Lust for Life” and its iconic, driving drum sound has been mirrored decades later in works like Travis’ “Selfish Jean” and Jet’s “Are You Gonna Be My Girl;” an illustration of musical ideas perpetuating their influence through the decades.

Hunt Sales is an American rock drummer who is celebrated for his work with David Bowie, Iggy Pop, and Todd Rundgren among others, Hunt Sales had a long and successful career behind the scenes before he released his first solo album at the age of 64. In 1979 Blondie, the New York band fronted by Debbie Harry, had their first US hit with “Heart of Glass”, a propulsive, glitter-smothered track about a love affair gone wrong, and a shoo-in for radio playlists. It was a bold new sound for the new-wavers whose first album had combined Sixties pop melodies with choppy guitars and a snarly attitude. Blondie played regularly at the punk mecca CBGB, and hung around with Television, The Ramones and the New York Dolls. With “Heart of Glass” they had gone full disco, and not everyone was happy about it.

Warren goes over the history of Eddie Van Halen and how his legacy has significantly impacted the music industry. Warren and Jamie Humphries also explain the technicalities behind Eddie’s guitar playing and how unique and different it is.
Van Halen had only recently been signed to Warner at the time of Fowly’s review, and the Los Angeles band hadn’t yet released their landmark debut album. But they had created a tremendous following in the Los Angeles area with a massive heavy metal sound emerging from a small three piece band (David Lee Roth fronted the group as a consummate showman, but left the instrumental part to Eddie on guitar, Eddie’s brother Alex on drums and Michael Anthony on bass). By the time the band released their eponymous first album in February of 1978, Van Halen was poised for almost-certain commercial success. But nothing could have prepared audiences for the album’s completely instrumental second track, “Eruption,” in which Eddie groundbreaking guitar playing was showcased, full-force, for the world to see.

SHAED is an American Electro-pop trio Consisting of Solo Artist Chelsea Lee and Producers Max and Spencer Ernst. Chelsea Lee and the Ernst twins first met in high school and began writing music together a few years later. In 2016, the group's second single, Thunder, landed on the viral streaming charts and began to grow their popularity. Sara Carter is a BBC trained, mixing and mastering engineer based in Hampshire, UK. Dave worked out of Larrabee Studios in Los Angeles where he mixed on an SSL. It was around 2010 that he discovered he was doing better mixes in-the-box than on a console, and by Pro Tools 11, he couldn’t beat what he was doing with a DAW. Of course, Dave champions whatever method best enhances the individual engineer’s creativity, and speaks about the importance of being receptive to new techniques. This might include, for example, using certain plug-ins that allow panning of specific frequencies–a helpful hint he gave us for keeping mixes interesting!

As many as you know, Aspen was the founder of Groove Tubes. Aspen designs for guitar amplifiers, microphones, and vacuum tube have been applauded by producers and musicians for nearly 40 years.
He also won the prestigious Microphone of the Year TEC Award for one of his innovative microphone designs.
Today's episode will be from an Interview Produce Like A Pro had back in March of 2016 when Warren visits Aspen at his studio Aspen's Place Recording. As you can see, Aspen was quite passionate about what he did and will truly be missed.
Ken Sluiter is a secret weapon
He's is a recording engineer, producer, and mixer out of Chicago. He moved to Los Angeles in 2003, where he worked alongside legendary producers and engineers, such as Andrew Scheps, Greg Fidelman, Joe Chiccarelli and Jim Scott.
He has an amazing list of credits that includes a staggering list of talent like James Blunt, Weezer, Augustines, Ok Go, Heart, Marc Almond, Jerry Lee Lewis and many others. As Ken put it, he has had his "head between speakers for the better part of 25 years."
