Bio/Intro

On Todays Episode we are joined Toni Hort from Illume Development & Behaviour. Illume is a development and behaviour consultation service working with parents/carers, educators and children to understand behaviours and make meaningful changes. Toni is an educator with nearly 20 years experience working with children in both the early years and primary sectors. Raised in Brisbane and with the exception of a 4 year stint in Moranbah, she has spent the last 20 years here in Townsville. Her journey into the world of understanding development and behaviour above and beyond good teaching practices began with my eldest child, developed with my youngest child and became cemented when my skills and strategies transferred to the school environment. This hard, isolating, frustrating and heartbreaking journey enabled me to find her vocation – mentoring and guiding parents, carers and educators through the challenges faced when caring for children with difficulties. For 12 years she has worked with families and services to fill the gap of what children know and understand about social norms and replacing inappropriate social behaviours with appropriate ones.

Thank you Toni for your time and we know you will enjoy this episode

On todays episode, Elle and Ricky chat about:

  • Diversity and Inclusion in Workplaces and Communities
  • Having the uncomfortable conversations - how do we do better, if we don't know better? How do we ASK without being insulting?
  • Accommodations in the workplace - often not as hard or expensive as we think
  • Being a good ally - making your workplace SAFE for a more diverse community is about more than just having disabled toilets or SAYING you are a diverse workplace

EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS
2:30- What does diversity and inclusion mean to you

4:00- Why might people not start on inclusion?

6:30- Shoutout @BDMag (https://www.bdmag.com.au/)

7:30- How to get better at storytelling around diversity, inclusion, social good?

9:30- Starting with what or who you know.

11:30- How to incorporate inclusion into the business as usual at your workplace/ community?

13:30- GROUNDBREAKING!!

“I’m interested in making this a more inclusive and diverse workplace. Can you share with me what that might mean to you and then we can start from there”

15:00- Disclosure (In Person, On job applications, etc)

19:00- “When you open up that conversation in your boardroom just make sure it’s a safe space”

20:00- Shoutout @clothingthegaps (https://www.clothingthegaps.com.au/)

23:00- “It’s so easy to overlook what makes a safe space when that’s not my experience”

“Just putting a ramp at the front door does not mean that your office or workplace is inclusive and is thinking about he impacts that those people experience in the way that space is created”

“I’ve made more mistake than I’ve had wins. You just have to get comfortable getting it wrong and learning as you go because there is so much to learn”

25:00- A story or two around physical exclusion (through lack of accessibility) and experiences of people

29:00- A follow on the Elle’s event scholarship example

“Done is better than perfect” Getting started is important and making mistakes along the way is okay…so long as what you are doing and the mistakes you’re making aren’t harming a group of people.

31:00- Not wanting to standout or have tokenistic recognition (and having choice around that)

33:00- Recruiting for human skills vs degree/experience (and challenging our mindsets)

36:00- When you know better you do better. And learning to do better can be deeply uncomfortable

43:00- Book & Resource Suggestions (more in show notes)

Thank you Elle!!

On Todays Episode we are joined by Michael Pugh. Michael is an avid outdoorsman and founder of Townsville Hike & Explore, social outdoor hiking and adventure community, based out of Townsville . The group is arguably the regions’ largest social outdoor hiking and adventure community, with over 12000 active members across channels in Oct 2022.

Townsville Hike and Explore group is not a commercial operation or business. Events are free and organised/led by volunteers. This year, we have relied on the contributions of 12 volunteer walk leaders to host our events.

The groups motto is “fun, fitness, friendship and community’ and they pride themselves on offering outdoor events suitable for those of all ages, fitness levels and capabilities while improving mental and physical health outcomes within our communities.

In the spirit of inclusion the group have accessible walks, beginners walks and hikes and a group mentorship program for those still 'finding their feet in the outdoors’ continues to be a success. New members are matched up with a more experienced member who assists with answering questions about group activities & requirements.

For further information about our group, have a look at their website (www.townsvillehikeandexplore.com) and our Facebook and Instagram channels.

A short story on mindsets, roles, and expectancies.

When Jeff Strully was visiting Queensland from Colorado in the 90's, he told a very powerful story from his own life situation as a parent. The example, given here in this audio, about two other women in their early twenties, is told in the same way:

The point of these two stories of young adults is that they are in fact the same person. How people are treated can depend on how they are seen and what roles and expectations are put on them.

Hence, when valued adults roles are pursued, adults with disabilities begin to get a real life.
