Bio/Intro
On Todays Episode we are joined Toni Hort from Illume Development & Behaviour. Illume is a development and behaviour consultation service working with parents/carers, educators and children to understand behaviours and make meaningful changes. Toni is an educator with nearly 20 years experience working with children in both the early years and primary sectors. Raised in Brisbane and with the exception of a 4 year stint in Moranbah, she has spent the last 20 years here in Townsville. Her journey into the world of understanding development and behaviour above and beyond good teaching practices began with my eldest child, developed with my youngest child and became cemented when my skills and strategies transferred to the school environment. This hard, isolating, frustrating and heartbreaking journey enabled me to find her vocation – mentoring and guiding parents, carers and educators through the challenges faced when caring for children with difficulties. For 12 years she has worked with families and services to fill the gap of what children know and understand about social norms and replacing inappropriate social behaviours with appropriate ones.
Thank you Toni for your time and we know you will enjoy this episode

The group is arguably the regions’ largest social outdoor hiking and adventure community, with over 12000 active members across channels in Oct 2022.

In the spirit of inclusion the group have accessible walks, beginners walks and hikes and a group mentorship program for those still 'finding their feet in the outdoors’ continues to be a success. A short story on mindsets, roles, and expectancies.
When Jeff Strully was visiting Queensland from Colorado in the 90's, he told a very powerful story from his own life situation as a parent. The example, given here in this audio, about two other women in their early twenties, is told in the same way:
The point of these two stories of young adults is that they are in fact the same person. How people are treated can depend on how they are seen and what roles and expectations are put on them.
Hence, when valued adults roles are pursued, adults with disabilities begin to get a real life.
A reading from DSQ Resource Paper, October 2000, Brisbane titled "Changing Our Ways of Thinking About Adults with Disabilities"
