Transplanting Seedlings!
FINALLY, it's TIME! My Tomato Seedlings are going into their FOREVER HOMES.
Beginning in January, I started the process of sowing seeds indoors. It's many hours day afy day, after day, of sifting and prepping soil, of sowing seeds, carefully watering, and evetually, potting them up to larger and larger growing pots. Soon, it's time. Finally hardening them off, after months of being sheltered and pampered, time to get them ready for outdoors.
It starts out so very cold and dreary, and now, many months later, it's warmer and sunny. FINALLY time to get some seedlings into the ground. Here's my secrets to good soil, transplanting and raising seedlings. And a little run down of what's in my Home Garden #1.

Hardening OFF Seedlings!
We all LOVE our plants, and often start many from seed. When we do, we give them care, and light and tend to them... but, Many make a simple mistake! You have to CAREFULLY Transition Seedlings outdoors, otherwise, you may be killing them! My gardens are in New England, zone 6b/7a.

Seedlings, grown indoors, even with the most impressive grow lights, simply are NOT used to the Sunlight and Wind of the outdoor world. Seedlings are tender and can easily be sunburned, and scalding by too much sunlight... similar to our own sunburns, first time on the beach.
Hardening off is the process of getting your seedlings acclimatized to the sun, breezes and outdoors.

Fresh Vegetables! This is how I sow and grow my own Squash, Zucchini, Eggplant, Cucumber, and more, to feed my family. I sowed Delicata, Butternut, and Spaghetti Squash. For the last few years, I plant about 3 varieties of cucumber, 2 types of squash, and some zucchini in 7 gallon (26 Liter) Fabric Grow Bags. Typically, one plant per bag. I am growing some new varieties: Boston Piuckling Cucumber, Delicata Squash is new. The Eggplant is new for me, too. Some family favorites: Muncher, Straight 8, Spacemaster 90 Cucumber, the Butternut Squash, Spaghetti Squash are retunring faves, as well as Black Beauty Zucchini and Golden Zucchini.

Welcome Back, to Blue's Garden Tips: Potting Up Pepper Seedlings!
I sowed my Coral Bell Peppers Seed Jan 15th and Potted them Up March 10th. I sowed Sunbright Bell, Purple Beauty Bell, Big Red Bell, Golden Cal Bell, Lemon Drop Aji, and Sweet Banana Pepper Feb 15th, and Potted Up March 30th. I find most Bell Pepper grows faster than Sweet Banana and the Medium Hot Aji, so I potted most up now, and will wait for these two to grow larger, before potting them up. My New England gardens are Zone 6b and 7a.
I am hoping for about 65-75% germination, and after potting up and transplanting in to my Fabric Grow Bags, I am hoping for half of my seeds to reach maturity for harvest.

Potting Up Peppers for #GroVid23!

Usually, for the last few years, I plant about 5 varieties of pepper in 5 gallon (19 Liter) Fabric Grow Bags. Typically, one plant per bag. I am growing some new varieties: Golden California Wonder, and Big Red Bell, as well as some family favorites: Lemon Drop Aji, Sweet Banana, Coral Bell, Purple Beauty Bell, and Sunbright Bell, and Sunbright Bell Pepper.
I will probably end up transplanting between 3 and 4 of each outside, come end of April, Early May. I usually wait and see on weather, Peppers prefer more warmth than tomato, so they may go in a week AFTER the tomato. I also need to spend about a week hardening them off, to the sun. So, maybe closer to Mid May for Peppers outside.
I think this will be about a 10% increase in Pepper plants for me this year. I will see about trying to find a way to preserve some, pickle some, or dehydrate some, to help wiht my goal of closing the Hunger Gap.

For the last few years, I have planted 3 twenty five gallon (95 liter) fabric Grow Bags of potato usually, around March 17th (St. Paddy's day!). This year, with our nasty winter weather, I have managed to plant potato yesterday. Finally.
Normally, it takes about 3 or 3 1.2 months for the potato to be ready for harvest. Once the green growth becomes yellowed, and starts to drop over, that means the potato are ready for harvesting:
Once I harvest, onto a table to allow the potato to cure:
After I harvest, (Usually early July) I immediately refresh the soil, add some more fertilizer and replant Potato, to get a second harvest, end of October.

Dehydrating Red Onion From My Garden
Follow along in the video as I show you how I prep my Red Onion for longer term winter storage.
In February, I planted my Onions. Actually, what did is called overseeding. I planted hundreds in each 4 inch by 4 inch container, for later transplanting outside. By summer, I was ahrvesting an onion or two, when I needed, for cooking. By End of the growing Season, I harvested the last, and hung them for drying and storing. I stored them by stringing and hanging them to keep them spoiling. Check out Stringing Onion For how I store onion.Loong term hanging is only one method for storing Onion. I also Dehydrate the onion, for use in Stews, Soups, and Suaces, as well as cooking many other meals. Sowing and growing my own Vegetables, helps me feed my family and friends, and also helps me to act locally, think locally, and grow locally.

A Quick Recap of my 2022 GroVid Harvest Results!
This is my END of 202 SEASON Garden harvest recap.
Follow my latest video as I show you the results of my season of sowing, planting, and harvesting.
Seedlings began in February, as early as 1st Feb, for Onions, Mid Februray for Peppers, and Mid March for most everything else. Outside, Potato went into the ground on St. Patrick's Day, March 17th. Most of my transplants went into Grow Bags early May, depending on the type of plant and it's cold tolerance. Remember, I spent a week transitioning the seedlings outside, before going into ground...
Overall, my garden had twice the number of plants, and yet, most species were simply too few ripened fruit to be plucked! Most of the results of the lower than xpected harvest, was due to an extreme drought for 5 weeks, early July.
My garden, as alwys, was a chance to feed my friends and family, in the only way I know how, to serve them! Growing my own fresh, healthy food is how I do that best.
And that makes me smile... better for the planet, better for my own family.

I know this may be a shock to some of you, but I love cooking. Love eating, so, love cooking. And nothing is better than Cooking with Fresh Ingredients. During winter, I still want my fresh herbs, so, I am sowing seeds to grow fresh herbs for my cooking.

Sowing Salad Greens Indoors
In the middle of winter, I hate not being able to eat fresh garden harvests, so, this past winter, and now, this winter I am sowing my own Lettuce, Spinach, Arugula, and harvesting too!
Every three or four weeks, I will seed start another batch of lettuces, to keep my indoor garden fresh with healthy choices for my family. This video, I will be sowing Super Red Romaine Lettuce, Little Gem Butterhead Lettuce, Slow Bolt Arugula, and Bloomsdale Spinach.

Fall Stringing Onion
After drying your onions for a couple of weeks, to get the moisture out of the dry green onion stalks,, it's time for some long term storage. Many people BRAID their onions. They look good this way, but as a cook, I can tell you, braided onions are a pain to use, becuase you have to UNBRAID them, to get some onions.

Sowing Seeds Means Seed Starter! ...Preparing Your Starter Mix makes ALL the difference! Seeds are delicate in some ways, so, giving them ALL the advantages helps. My next tasks for me to accomplish, this coming week:

I have another three 10 Gallon (For Brussels Sprouts), and twenty 10 Gallon grow bags, to fill, that's the last of them. These will be for pepper, tomato, Zucchini and Summer squash. These will get my usual 1/3 garden soil, 1/3 peat, 1/3 compost mix, plus Espoma® Garden-Tone and some worm castings. At the least, I need to gather the soil, compost and peat for this and perhaps start to mix it.

end of week, I will start Hardening OFF my peppers: transplanting outside, within 10 days.

Next week, I will be hardening off Tomato, and following week, squash, Zucchini and more herbs! It takes about a week for Hardening off plants. so, once I start, I transplant in 7 or 8 days, depending on weather.

My 2021 GroVid Harvest!!!
It was an AMAZING year for the garden harvest! I will definitely plant almsot all of what I did this past year, in the upcoming 2022 season. I may pick a couple of new Tomato Varieties, and retire a few others. I'll plant my cucumber earlier, and my onions will be tweaked for the typs I plant, but all in all, VERY PLEASED I may branch out and ADD some more types of vegetables, too...
Look for the beginnings of my planting, coming up in about 6 weeks. I am getting my seed starter ready, and beginning to plan what types and how many of each vegetable to try.
I hope you'll join me in trying a garden for yourselfs, too!

Ep. 8, Trackside Details, Trestle Brdige and more, For Cape Cod Highline In this episode, I am spending my time creating a new Wood Trestle Bridge, adding some small details to the mining camp, and some rock detail
Building the Bridge
Using Balsa Wood, and some glue, I cut pieces and create a top deck to the bridge. I add in two trestle supports, and paint. Again, with some Woodland Scenics Burnt Sienna, slate grey Black, and Concrete, as well as Vallejo Mahogany Brown paint, I liberally coat the raw wood areas. Mining Camp Details
From Woodland Scenics (I swear I am not sponsored!), I have some trackside Junk, barrels, Cloth Sacks, and other bits. Using some Woodland Scenics Concrete, Slate Grey, and Black, and some Vallejo Mahogany Brown Paint for the basic colours, I also added a later Black Wash for some weathering. Raised Bridge Groundwork
Using some Plaster of pAris and some water, I start to smooth over the raised bed cracks and missing bits. I use some Concrete, Black, Slate Grey and Burnt Umbre colour paint, and coat the ground, as well as glued on Rock Forms. Using a foam applicaiton bursh and a paint technique called Leopard Spiotting, I cover and blend the raw plaster. Not shown is grinding down some of the plaster roadbed to smooth out the transitions. Ep. 7, Ming Camp Mountaintop For Cape Cod Highline In this episode, I am spending my timecreating three different types of trees, with three different methods.
Building the Mountaintop
Using Woodland Scenics Plaster Cloth, and some water, I build up the base of the mountaintop. Again, with some Woodland Scenics Burnt Sienna, and Earth Green Undercoat paint, I liberally coat the white areas for prep, before adding ground cover. Mine Shaft Entrances
From Woodland Scenics (I swear I am not sponsored!), I found a pair of Culvert Moulds, and built them to be my mine shaft entrances. Using some Woodland Scenics Burnt Umbre, and some Vallejo Mahogany Brown Paint for the basic colours, I also added a later Black Wash for some weathering. Beginning Ground Cover on the mountaintop!
Using Woodland Scenics Coarse Ground Cover: Light Green, Medium Green, and a Burnt Grass colour, i coated the ground. Around the mine entrances, I used some sand, too. A spray of thinned scenic glue was used to keep it all in place. Kadee Logging Caboose

Ep. 6, Trees and More Trees For Cape Cod Highline In this episode, I am spending my timecreating three different types of trees, with three different methods.
AJT Trees
Using AJT Trees for modeling, I start out with painting the trunks, with a mix of 2 different paints. From there, I add in some glue, and add on a custom blend of a sprinkle of Woodland Scenics Coarse Ground Cover: Light Green, Medium Green, and a Burnt Grass colour. A spray of thinned scenic glue was used to keep it all in place.
Woodland Scenic Realistic Pines Trees
A similar paint mix was used for these tree trunks and then, the same process repeated for adding in foliage, as well as adding some Clump Foliage.
Home Made, NAtrual Trees

Ep. 6, Rock Faces, and Ground Scenery For Cape Cod Highline In this episode, I build up the rock faces and spring for Upper Pilgrim Lake, Paint the rock moulds, Seal Lower Pilgrim Lake, Add some Ground cover, and begin finishing the rock painting. The top of the watefall: Upper Pilgrim Lake, needs more structure, more rock and form to hold the water in, for the waterfall. As well, I seal in the lower and upper lake areas, in preperation of the water resin pours painting and two part resin pour.

Using Woodland Scenics' Hydrocal, I create and pour a layer to seal the bottom of the lake areas, both upper and lower. In addition, I build up the rock, to give some dimension. I will use Yellow Ochre, Slate Gray, Stone Gray, and Black paint washes to blend the rocks into the mountain. I pour different lightweight hydrocal into silicone moulds, and paint them. Finally, I use Woodland Scenics Ground Cover, to begin fashioning the greenery of the mountaintops!

Ep. 5, Tunnel, Scenery, and Painting For Cape Cod Highline In this episode, I build up the second access: Upper Pilgrim Lake, Paint the HIghlands, Add some rock, and Paint the Tunnel Entrance face. The top of the watefall: Upper Pilgrim Lake, needs more structure, more rock and form to hold the water in, for the waterfall. As well, The Highlands mountaintop needs reinforcing.
Tunnel Entrance!
Using Woodland Scenics' Plaster Cloth, I create a bond for the tunnel casting and the scenery base. Once the base is glued, I will use Slate Gray, Stone Gray, and Black paint washes to blend the brick into the mountain. With the basic structures finished, I start putting on a basecoat of paint. This Raw Umber Burnt Umber mix is a wash to cover the white undercoat. Eventually, I will glue down some scenic grass and cover, and seal the entrie top of the Highlands Mountain.

Ep. 4, Scenery For Cape Cod Highline In this episode, I discuss how the mountain tops are built. The inner mountain has a tunnel underneath, with track. I need access in case of derailment. The top of the watefall: Upper Pilgrim Lake, and the Top of Higland Mountain both have false tops, that provde access. I will disguise these both with Trees, Shrubs, Lichen, and Grasses, etc
Moulding Rock Formations!
Using Woodland Scenics' Lightweight Hydrocal, and their Silicone Moulds, I showcase mixing, pouring, casting and unmoulding these rock formations. Much of the base of moutnains, and under structure of the terrain, etc is made using foam baords, and Woodland Scenics Plaster Cloth. In the video, I show how it works.

My Garden Tour Continues!
A decade ago, my garden was all in ground. About foour years ago, I started planting in containers on table tops. Easier than bending over. Almsot always, these were all plants a bought at a garden store.
As soon as the pandemic hit, I started growing from SEED! last year, a smaller garden. THIS YEAR??? Well, I planted one or two or 50 or so vegetable plants!
The garden has taken a different shape, NOW, this year, the garden is all in Cloth Grow Bags. My wife and I are soon to be moving. Waiting for the right place to move to, so, I am being flexible and preapring in case I have to move the garden as well. Take a walk in this video along wiht me, as we look at the different species I heve planted.
