“It takes a village to raise a child” ~African Proverb ~ Welcome to the Guilbault Girls Show where you will have the opportunity to hear from mothers, fathers, siblings, and individuals themselves about their journey of living with a disability. I know I know it’s called Guilbault Girls, but we have a bonus for you as we get the Guilbault Boys to interview some of the dads and siblings and get their perspectives too. We’ll also have special guests from time to time to share the many resources that are available to those living with a disability and their families. So, get ready to laugh, smile, cry, maybe even get a little angry when you hear some of these stories of their day-to-day struggles, but let’s not forget their many triumphs. I know when I was a new mom, and my child was diagnosed with a disability I felt lost and alone and wondered what comes next. I learned from the ones that came before me and I want to be able to continue to share that knowledge and support to others. As they say it takes a village, and if it weren’t for our village we wouldn’t be where we are today. So, will you help be that village, help us spread awareness, help us change mindsets, help us teach other's to be kind to one another…. well you can do that by simply sharing our show to the masses. In this episode we had the pleasure of interviewing Maggie van Galen.
Maggie is the author of two children’s book series -- The Adventures of Keeno & Ernest and King’s Day Out. All three books in the Keeno & Ernest series have received the nationally acclaimed Mom’s Choice Awards® among other individual awards. Her latest series, King’s Day Out, is co-written with a doctor of pediatric occupational therapy, and together they have broadened their scope to form a business with a mission of empowering children as they navigate life’s adventures. King’s Day Out LLC will incorporate books, resources and activities.
Maggie’s favorite thing about being a children’s author is reading to children. She has read to more than 4,000 kids and “hasn’t lost one yet!” (Her personal claim to fame) Maggie also offers classroom and private sessions on writing which can tie in with a lesson plan and/or a specific theme.
Maggie grew up in northern Michigan. She graduated from Michigan State University with a BA in Advertising and a minor in creative writing. After spending more than 10 years climbing the corporate ladder, Maggie decided to put her passion for writing to the forefront. She began writing for local newspapers and published a book of poetry. In 2000, Maggie and her husband moved to London where she worked at The Economist. After starting her family a few years later, the children’s stories began to flow and her new career began.
Maggie lives in a small town north of Boston with her husband, two sons, a cat and their Bernese Mountain Dog, Koning (Dutch for King!).
For more information please visit:

Travel along with King, a Bernese Mountain Dog puppy, and his friends as they experience, observe, and grow through new experiences together.
Each story introduces a new adventure, the sensory challenges that can be associated with it, and some tools to help overcome any fears and anxieties. Whether a child benefits from OT-specific strategies or from learning by successfully regulating unfamiliar experiences, these books can support all children as they navigate new adventures.

In this episode we had the pleasure of interviewing Jacqueline and Alexa Child, founders of Dateabilty. Dateability is a dating app designed for people with disabilities and chronic illnesses.
After becoming disabled due to chronic illnesses as a teenager, Jacqueline’s life was forever changed. She was quickly exposed to the ableist behaviors and expectations perpetuated by society. She found dating challenging and would always fear disclosing her disability. She constantly wished she could meet someone else who understood life with chronic illness and disabilities. Since there wasn’t an app to do that, Jacqueline and Alexa decided they would make one.
Jacqueline graduated from Colorado College in 2016 with a degree in Psychology and received her master’s degree in Family and Human Development in 2017. She spends her free time playing music, volunteering at the local animal shelter, and hanging with family and her dog, Luna.
Alexa graduated from College of the Holy Cross in 2012 and Georgetown University Law Center in 2015. After law school, she began her career in public service and is currently a public interest attorney. She enjoys all the typical Colorado things—hiking and skiing—but also loves to cook and binge watch TV.

2024 - Season 3
Welcome to the Guilbault Girls Show where you will have the opportunity to hear from mothers, fathers, siblings, and individuals themselves about their journey of living with a disability.
So, will you help be that village, help us spread awareness, help us change mindsets, help us teach others to be kind to one another…. you can do that by simply sharing our show to the masses.

Hello and welcome back to another episode of the Guilbault Girls Show. I’m your host Karen Guilbault and today’s guests are Jared Allen and Colin Miller of Edward Jones in Havre de Grace Maryland.
Promoting financial and physical wellness
Planning for your future is about so much more than your finances. Building a stable financial roadmap is also about your and your family’s physical and emotional well-being, as navigating times of financial uncertainty can be stressful.
I really wanted to have them on because let’s face it, financial planning is difficult for everyone, but especially for families affected by disability. At any given time, almost 9 million families in America are caring for a child with disabilities. And many of these families are dealing with significant financial difficulties.
I was recently looking at an article that stated that the average cost of autism is $60,000 a year through childhood, and adult services are expected to exceed $461 billion by 2025. Meanwhile, according to U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) research, the average lifetime cost for an individual with cerebral palsy can top $1.5 million, once adjusted for inflation.
I thought there was no better time to close out 2023 with an interview regarding Financial Planning!

Hello and welcome back to another episode of the Guilbault Girls Show. I’m your host Karen Guilbault, and today’s guest is Samantha Belcher-Blake.
Samm is 32 years old and has a beautiful 8-year-old daughter named Hazel who is in the process of being adopted by her husband, Nick Blake.
After losing both of her parents within 6 months of each other, Samm stepped up to take care of her 36-year-old sister Heather, who has an intellectual disability and developmental delays.
When Heather was young, doctors had tried to talk her parents into putting her into a home with "people like her ". They refused. The doctors said she would never walk or talk, and boy did she prove them wrong! I can’t tell you how many parents have been told that same thing.
I read article from 2022 that there are more than 6 million Americans that have a developmental disability and a growing number of them have grown into adults who continue to be cared for by their parents.
Those parents are growing older too and there are now more than a million people over 60 caring for someone with intellectual or developmental disabilities in their home. One of the biggest concerns is what happens to them when those parents pass away.

Hello and welcome to another episode of the Guilbault Girls Show. I am your host Karen Guilbault, and today’s guest Laurieann Enright
Laurieann is a single parent to John and Nicholas, her beautiful identical twin boys. In February 2017 at the age of 5 they were diagnosed with non-verbal autism, global developmental delays, and intellectual disability. She battled aggressive triple negative breast cancer from 2018-2019, and she’s grateful to still be here to care for her amazing boys who are now 11 years old. During her cancer battle she also went through a nasty divorce. She works full-time as a paralegal to provide for her sons. She also has 3 wonderful adult children. The boys and Laurieann moved back to California this summer to be closer to them.
She soldiers on through her days without complaining because she knows how blessed she is. She’s fueled by grit and grace. Her sons make her laugh even on days when she’s too tired to smile! She thinks of herself as a hermit because it's not practical for her to take the boys anywhere by herself. She makes their home life as full as she can.

Through her own personal experience and credentials, she is more than qualified to help others heal through diet with a holistic approach.
As I prepared for my interview with Kate I began to think of all the invisible disabilities out there. Today’s guest is 18-Year-Old Dawson Clemens. He is a guitar player and a singer in a band with his brother 19-Yeare-Old Brother Drew, who has Autism. Dawson loves country music and finding different ways to have fun. He is also a volunteer firefighter with the Charlestown fire company.
I feel it’s so important to share the different perspectives and experiences of siblings. One to spread awareness and two to let others know they aren’t alone.
Siblings of children with disabilities have unique challenges—and siblings of children with autism are no exception. But as with virtually everything related to autism, each situation is unique. Because autism is such a wide-ranging disorder, autistic children and teens may present in completely different ways. As a result, siblings may find it relatively easy or extremely challenging to live in the same household.

Welcome to the Guilbault Girls Show where you will have the opportunity to hear from mothers, fathers, siblings, and individuals themselves about their journey of living with a disability.
Todays Guest are Today’s guests are Kathy and David (Dave) Clemens.
Kathy and Dave have two boys. Drew is 19 and has Autism Spectrum Disorder and Dawson who is 18. Since the boys were only 11 months apart, it was very clear to them that there was something different about Drew from a very young age. He lacked eye contact and language, played with his toys differently, and had epic meltdowns anytime they took him somewhere new or unfamiliar.
Kathy states it’s been a journey of many ups and downs, but one thing remains - unconditional love. Unconditional love by Kathy and Dave, as his parents, his younger brother, their family, and their community. In that unconditional love they have seen so much progress in his journey and are forever grateful.
So, today we are going to dive deeper into that journey of raising a child with autism and how it has affected various aspects of their personal, social, and family life.
I met Kathy years ago through The Arc NCR’s Parent Advocacy Classes and our county’s Special Education Citizen’s Advisory Committee back when I lived in Cecil County. Kathy has been a true advocate not only for her son but for so many others.

She earned her Master’s in Health Science, with a dual concentration in Community health and health administration from Towson University in 2018. In her free time, she volunteers with her local fire department and is the Vice President of the Au-Kline Syndrome foundation.

“It takes a village to raise a child” is an African proverb that means an entire community of people must interact with children for those children to grow in a safe and healthy environment.
“We live in a world in which we need to share responsibility. It’s easy to say it’s not my child, not my community, not my world, not my problem. Then there are those who see the need and respond.” -Fred Rogerss

Today’s guests are Malcolm and Maria Whyte, and their daughter Justina Matthews from Three Blessings Disabled Adventures.
Three Blessings Disabled Adventures, offers fun outdoor activities for the whole family to enjoy with their dis-ABLED family member. Their goal is to serve disabled individuals, affected by spinal cord injuries and amputations, who require the use of a wheelchair.
They believe that a disability not only happens to an individual, but the effects are felt by the whole immediate family. While a disability might be life changing, it does not need to stop you from doing the things you enjoy.
Getting out in God’s creation is not only fun but it is healing as well. Thank you so very much for being a guest on our show today.

Welcome to the Guilbault Girls Show where you will have the opportunity to hear from mothers, fathers, siblings, and individuals themselves about their journey of living with a disability.
In this episode we had the pleasure of interviewing Kim and Justin Waszkiewicz founders of Isaac's aNORAble Homes.
Justin and Kim are high school sweethearts from two different worlds who were meant to be. They have watched each other grow and transform through their journey, but what remains the same is their love. Kim likes to keep Justin on his toes with all her dreams and spontaneous ideas and he goes above and beyond to make them happen.
They became parents at 28 and found out that their daughter had Down syndrome. This caught them by surprise and opened doors to a community that taught them how to love with compassion. They then had their second child Isaac who taught them how to love everyone. He also taught them a lot about grace.
Nora and Isaac have been advocating since they were both 3 months old. They have done this through advocating on Capitol Hill, modeling to promote inclusive marketing, and now through travel and Art with Isaac’s aNORAble Home.
They are a family who simply want to spread awareness about life with disability in order to embrace everyone as an individual. They also want to emphasize that everyone is worthy and worth does not come from what someone can or cannot do.

Nathan is the Founder and CEO of Wheel Life Enterprises, was born with Spina Bifida, uses a manual wheelchair for his daily mobility needs, and has never let his physical disability stop him from what he sets out to accomplish.
The first born of two kids to his parents Michael and Tamara (‘Tam-ruh’) Nathan was always encouraged to be as independent as possible, including getting a higher education so he could be independent. He played wheelchair basketball as a child into his early adult years, learned how to drive, graduated with a degree in Business and has worked in the private, nonprofit, and public sectors. He has also coached high school boys’ and girls’ basketball.
While in college, Nathan experienced a chronic illness that was soon diagnosed as kidney failure. After three years of dialysis treatments, Nathan had a successful kidney transplant, with his father as his living donor. He would finish his degree in business after returning to school.
Nathan is a 2-time TEDx speaker and has been a paid professional speaker. He loves helping people with physical disabilities and their families develop a plan for independence so that they can live with purpose and freedom.

Today’s guest is Mindy Scheier, wife, mother of 3 and founder of Runway of Dreams and Gamut Management. Before starting the Runway of Dreams Foundation in 2014, Mindy Scheier spent 20 years working in fashion on the design team for the INC collection and as a stylist for Saks Fifth Avenue. Mindy was inspired to start Runway of Dreams after her son Oliver, who has Muscular Dystrophy, dreamed of wearing jeans like everyone else. After using her design skills to adapt a pair that met his needs and increased his confidence, she went on to conduct extensive research to develop modifications that would meet the needs of the largest minority in our world- people with disabilities. Following its launch, Runway of Dreams partnered with Tommy Hilfiger on the first mainstream adaptive clothing line for kids and continues to work with many mainstream brands such as Kohl’s, Target, JCPenny and Zappos.com. Founded on the basis that clothing is a basic human need, Runway of Dreams develops, delivers and supports initiatives to broaden the reach of mainstream adaptive clothing and promote people with disabilities in the fashion industry.
Due to the overwhelming amount of requests Mindy received at Runway of Dreams from a multitude of brands and industries for connection to PWDs, in 2019, Mindy created Gamut Talent Management to represent people with disabilities and create a marketplace where businesses and industries can connect to this target audience. Gamut is rebranding the way PWDs are viewed, marketed to and represented in the mainstream world. The continued support of the mission of Runway of Dreams will always be a component of Gamut, as the company’s 501c3 partner.
Mindy has been featured in Newsweek’s “The Creative Class of 2019: Innovators,” People magazine’s “Heroes Among Us” and Pix 11’s “Changemaker: Making the Fashion Industry More Inclusive.” She has also been featured in USA Today, Parents, The New York Times, The Washington Post, Vogue Business, WWD, NBC’s Today, ABC’s Good Morning America, Access, CNBC, Fox News Channel and more. An inspiring TED speaker, Mindy has received numerous awards including the Catalyst Award for “Marketing Influencer of the Year,” Citrin Cooperman’s “Women at the Wheel Leadership Excellence Award, the Association of Image Consultants International Bravo Award and Enable Inc.’s Michael Graves Award for Creativity and Persistence.
Mindy studied Fashion Design with a dual program at the University of Vermont and Fashion Institute of Technology.

In this episode we had the pleasure of interviewing Meg Zucker.
Meg is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison and NYU School of Law and is an attorney and leader in anti-money laundering and financial crimes on Wall Street. She is also the founder and president of Don’t Hide It Flaunt It® (DHIFI), which is a non-profit whose mission is to advance understanding, tolerance, and mutual respect for people's differences. It provides “flaunt it” Social Emotional Learning (SEL) and anti-bullying programming to public and private schools, universities, community service organizations, and diversity, equity, and inclusion programs at Fortune 500 companies.
Meg is a high-demand speaker and activist. She has been featured on the TODAY show and was the keynote speaker in the Distinguished American Speakers series in Tel Aviv, hosted by the U.S. Ambassador to Israel. Meg’s writing has appeared in Parents Magazine, USA Today, Scholastic Storyworks, The Jewish Forward, The Mighty, Motherwell, and Scary Mommy. The Zucker family was also the subject of a TLC special, “My Extraordinary Family.”
I had the pleasure of meeting Meg back in 2016 and we have kept in touch on and off since. Faith had a “Flaunt It” that Meg published back then and then she reached out to me in 2020 to ask me if I would be willing to write a piece to be in her upcoming book called “Born Extraordinary” on empowering children with differences and disabilities, which is what we are going to be diving into on this episode.

Welcome to the Guilbault Girls Show where you will have the opportunity to hear from mothers, fathers, siblings, and individuals themselves about their journey of living with a disability.
Hello and welcome to another episode of the Guilbault Girls Show. I am your host Karen Guilbault, and today’s guest is Katelyn Baldwin from The Kennedy Krieger’s Adaptive Sports Program out of Baltimore City, Maryland.
At Kennedy Krieger Institute, they believe that individuals living with disabilities should have every opportunity to pursue their dreams. Participating in sports and recreational programs gives both children and adults the opportunity to set goals and achieve increased independence. Sports, both competitive and recreational, teach life skills, promote confidence, and develop leadership. Friendships are built, accomplishments are recognized, and people are supported to achieve their fullest potential.
Whatever your age, ability level, experience, or schedule, the Adaptive Sports Program at Kennedy Krieger has something for you. From the thrill of downhill skiing to a serene day of fishing or sailing, they strive to offer opportunities for people with disabilities to experience outdoor recreation in exciting ways.
All activities in the Adaptive and Rehabilitative Sports Program are supervised by experienced staff members, including recreational and physical therapists, and take into account individual needs and abilities. The program is open to current and former students and patients, as well as individuals living in the community who are interested in trying out a new activity or resuming a sport or activity they previously enjoyed.

Welcome to the Guilbault Girls Show where you will have the opportunity to hear from mothers, fathers, siblings, and individuals themselves about their journey of living with a disability.
In this episode I had the pleasure of interviewing Derek Flores from Zappos Adaptive. Derek Flores began his career at Zappos in 2008 as a member of their world-renowned Customer Loyalty Team. He came to the company with an apparel background, and within a year found himself as the newest addition to the rapidly growing Clothing Merchandising Team.
Over the years, Derek has held many roles within that merchandising team: copywriter, buyer, site merchandiser, and stylist to name a few. In 2015, while managing both the Denim and Men’s Apparel teams, he was asked to partner with a new team- a team that would focus on footwear and apparel solutions for people with disabilities. Now known as Zappos Adaptive, Derek is applying his experience, knowledge, and passion for inclusion as their Lead Merchandiser.
Derek’s roots are found in Colorado, where he grew up in Pueblo before going on to graduate from Colorado State University with a BA in History. Derek’s passion for trends and dedication for inclusivity, coupled with his years of experience at Zappos, make him an insightful and enthusiastic speaker regarding Zappos Adaptives’ commitment to providing customers with fashionable and functional products that make getting dressed easier.
When Derek is not working hard curating, styling, and sharing the impact Zappos Adaptive is having on the retail world, you can find him at home with his wife Natalie (and his dogs Anna and Katy) rooting for his beloved Colorado sports teams from afar.

Today’s guest is 20-year-old BJ Yoho from Bloomfield, Indiana. BJ was born with spina bifida, has endured 17 surgeries, and uses a wheelchair.
BJ has been a patient at Riley’s Hospital for Children since 2002. He decided he wanted to give back so what better way to do that then by hosting his own toy drive for 10 years to give back with charity. How awesome is that?
For 6 years BJ worked at the Bloomfield Family Life Center up until COVID hit, and right now he is focusing on being a full-time college student at Ivy Tech with hopes to earn a degree in Film.
The most important things to him are his Faith in God and his close relationship with his family.

In this episode we had the pleasure of interviewing Jenice Watson. Jenice currently lives in Salt Lake City, Utah. She enjoys the outdoors and music. She has two wonderful boys and has been married to her husband for almost 15 years.
Jenice and her family founded A Buddy Just Like Me to help individuals with a diagnosis, their families, and caregivers to be able to find and create meaningful connections. You can connect through A Buddy Just Like Me in different levels. Such as for the person with the diagnosis can use FIND A BUDDY, a person with a diagnosis who has lived with the experiences and wouldn't mind mentoring newly diagnosed people can use MENTOR A BUDDY, or the caregiver to whomever is diagnosed can use CAREGIVER TO A BUDDY. They have a place for you! The website is live, and they are in the collection phase of their connections. As of spring 2022 the app is being launched and they can't wait to bring connection to your fingertips.
A Buddy Just Like Me is a non-profit that started after a wish from their son West, who was born with cerebral palsy. During his road to and in diagnosis they realized how many emotions a diagnosis journey can bring, it's a mix bag of happy and sad and ups and downs. It's a beautifully unique experience- but can also be very lonely and isolating, and for them discovering that finding true connections was difficult due to HIPPA, limited resources to find someone living the same experiences, and getting lost in an algorithm. They knew if West needed this unique connection, so did so many others within the diagnosed community. Their goal is to connect the services to every hospital, foundation, school, and nonprofit communities; it is important that everyone who is in the experience of a diagnosis knows they are not alone, can find connections, community, and resources in their area. They are excited to provide that service that can connect so many.
Check out their website www.abuddyjustlikeme.com and fill out the form to get in the collection of connections - be sure to sign up for updates so you will be notified once the app is live and ready to connect this Spring. Instagram, Facebook, Tik Tok & YouTube you can find them using the handle: @abuddyjustlikeme

In this episode we had the pleasure of interviewing Nick DeFosset and Teresa Maguire. Nick and Teresa met at a Cerebral Palsy Support Group back in March of 2018. The very next day they met up again at a TobyMac Christian Concert. To date they have seen over 41 Christian concerts together!
Nick says that one of the first things he noticed was that Teresa had a crappy hospital wheelchair, so he decided to rebuild her one of his ultralight wheelchairs. Four years after they met, they went through rehab together to regain their ability to walk. He shares that experience during our interview.
They both feel they understand each other's issues, on a deeper level being they both live with Cerebral Palsy, and that has made their relationship that much stronger.
They are currently working on launching their Cooking Show on YouTube called “Cooking with the Quads”.

Born and raised in Issaquah, Washington (30 minutes east of Seattle), Billy Price grew up very active in sports. Hiking and camping were staples. Mountain biking was a frequent treat. At eighteen, he left home and entered college. He was on top of the world, as the cliche goes. And then in a moment, his life changed forever.
On October 9, 1996, Billy fell from a three-story window, broke multiple vertebrae and damaged his spinal cord causing permanent paralysis. The medical diagnosis? Quadriplegia. And the world that Billy was accustomed to—a world filled with fierce independence—was gone. Instead, Billy spent the next five-months of his life at the University of Washington Medical Center piecing his life back together both physically and mentally. Forced to grapple with either success or sorrow, Billy opted to focus on the function he still had instead of letting the thought of what he had lost consume him. Inch by inch, day by day, he improved, not in the sense of reversing paralysis, but in the sense of building confidence and gaining strength.
Following his rehabilitation, Billy returned to college and finished his mechanical engineering degree. He relearned how to drive. He took the ski slopes back as a sit skier. He landed a job with the Federal Aviation Administration. He bought a condominium and started living on his own...until he met the love of his life and got married. And all that aside, somewhere along the way he connected with his longtime friend Darin Donaldson and started a shoe company that continues to grow and impact lives.
Life is a journey. Enjoy it! Embrace and receive what life has to offer. Find strength in the storms. Be a person of action. Build on what you have. Hold on to hope. Have courage. Move forward.
We all have a story. We cannot go back and rewrite how our story begins. But we can change how our story ends. It all comes down to choice. And the choice to change can be made today.

Welcome to the Guilbault Girls Show where you will have the opportunity to hear from mothers, fathers, siblings, and individuals themselves about their journey of living with a disability.
In this episode we had the pleasure of interviewing Kim and Ryan Andreen. They met while teaching middle school together and married in 2003. In 2005, they did not have any idea of the miracle that would unfold as Ellianna was born and not expected to survive, and if so, not without profound disability. While she has mild cerebral palsy and hearing loss in one ear, her recovery has been remarkable. Ellie’s response and passion has flourished into her advocacy and pride for people with disabilities. Her spunky younger sister, Faith, was born in 2008, completing their family. The Andreens enjoy hiking, biking, paddling, and fishing together as well as musical activities and loving their kitties. Havre de Grace has been a wonderful community to raise their family in.

“It takes a village to raise a child” ~African Proverb ~
Welcome to the Guilbault Girls Show where you will have the opportunity to hear from mothers, fathers, siblings, and individuals themselves about their journey of living with a disability.
