Regular exercise has been shown time and time again shown in research to be a protective factor against many chronic health conditions. Not only is regular exercise great for our long-term health, but being active helps us feel good in the short term.
Despite this, plenty of people do not get sufficient physical activity - as a population, we aren't moving enough.
For some people, regular exercise is a part of daily life. For others, it is a bit of a struggle to get into the habit of working out regularly. Which of the two are you?
In this episode, I offer some ideas and strategies to help get you moving your body consistently, why exercise is so important for short and long-term health and my experience with staying active throughout my life despite significant changes in lifestyle.

Changing habits of any kind is hard.
Unhealthy eating habits are especially challenging due to the food environment in which we live, the overload of information and misinformation about nutrition and a number of other individual and social factors.
In this episode, I am sharing the context around making positive changes to eating habits, some common mistakes people make when pursuing healthier eating patterns and what to actually do and focus on so you can set yourself up for success.
A healthy eating pattern is incredibly beneficial in helping you feel good now and protecting your health in the long term.
Making a change in this area is often unsexy and does take time. Although it can be simple, it is rarely easy. But you can do this if you get the right pieces of the puzzle and stick with it!

As the end of 2022 rolls around, I’ve decided to share some of my reflections of the year that was, and how things unfolded for me.
I really enjoy listening to this style of episode from other podcasters, and thought this year I would do the same for my business and life.
It’s been a year that has not unfolded the way I planned 12 months ago! But I’ve embraced the uncertainty, change and disappointments and am using it all as information and experience to move forward and grow. This is life; the good the bad and the in between. I’m grateful for it all!
I hope you enjoy my reflections on my business, wellbeing and life, and hope you have the chance to do the same for yourself.

Your environments have a profound impact on your health and wellbeing in general, and on the things, you do to create a healthy lifestyle (or not).
Being aware of your environments and tweaking things a little can set you up for success with healthy lifestyle habits, and support your wellbeing goals.
In this episode, I will explain what your environments for wellbeing are, and how you can use this to help you create a healthy lifestyle, and create a well and thriving life that you desire.
We will start with a bit of theory to explain the model, and then get into the practicalities of applying this in your life. I will also give you a useful exercise to do so you use this model in your own life, to make healthy changes.

In this episode, I chat through how a ‘snowball’ approach is the best way to make positive changes in your lifestyle, change your habits around food and exercise, and reach your health and wellbeing goals.
The snowball approach - as opposed to making an overhaul - will allow you to transition to new habits and a healthier lifestyle in a sustainable way. It allows your mind to adjust and your identity to shift and align with the person you are seeking to become.
Instead of a crash and burn (commonly seen in the overhaul approach), the snowball approach is more sustainable.

One of the reasons people get stuck with a goal is that they have outgrown the goal.
The person they were when they set the goal or had the dream, has evolved.
It is incredibly draining to hold on to a goal that is no longer aligned with your vision of a well and thriving life. Often, we aren't even AWARE that we are clutching this goal or dream so tight, or that we have outgrown it.
This has happened to me, on more than one occasion. It has been only recently I have been able to consciously identify it happening, and take steps to address it.
That is what I am sharing with you in this episode. How to identify an old goal or dream, and what to do next.
Holding onto an old goal takes you away from goals and dreams that are more aligned with who you are now, and who you want to become. Ideally, we are stretching ourselves and growing into our dreams and life vision, not retracting to fit with something we wanted in a previous phase of life.

Have you ever felt like you are stuck, you can't seem to move forward or make progress on your goals and the things you want to achieve?
Do you feel like there is a part of you that wants more, but you can't define exactly what that 'more' is, let alone how to actually bring it all to life?
In this episode, I am going to tell you the most important thing you need [and need to do] to get anything and everything you want.
This includes becoming the person you want to be and having the lifestyle you want to live.
Even though this one thing is pretty simple, it is very often missed and this means that it can be difficult to create massive change in your life.
I also share some simple mindset practices to help you do this one important thing.
Enjoy 😉

Wouldn't it be amazing if you had a simple set of steps to create change in any area of your life or in your life overall?
Well, in this episode, I share exactly that - a simple 5 step process to create transformation - big or small - in your life.
You can work through these 5 steps if you want to transform your life as a whole, or if you want to improve one particular area of your life, such as wellbeing, or even a more specific goal - you get to decide what the focus is.
This process isn't a perfectly linear one. The steps build upon one another and need to be present when considering subsequent steps too. And in addition to all of this, the mindset work needs to be there the whole way along.

Doing the 'Mindset Work' or 'Thought Work' is a sometimes missed but incredibly powerful part of elevating your wellbeing, getting the results you want and achieving your goals.
In this episode, I briefly introduce what I consider mindset to be, within the context of coaching people around their wellbeing.
I touch on what mindset actually is, how it influences what you do, your habits, how you interact with the world and even how you feel, what mindset is NOT, why the mindset work is essential to do, and key mindset concepts that are important in the scope of wellbeing and healthy behaviour change, and some reasons why people might skip the mindset work.
In my coaching process, mindset has been promoted from a backup dancer to star of the show, and for good reason; it is POWERFUL so please make sure you prioritise this work!
I hope you enjoy this episode and start harnessing your mindset to elevate your wellbeing.

Wellbeing is the foundation for a meaningful, fulfilled and successful life.
In this episode, I explore the concept of wellbeing and share my perspective on it all. The intention for this is so we can all get on the same page about this, and move forward to make positive and impactful change in your life.
I touch on how health status and health habits are not the same thing as wellbeing, but rather wellbeing is the umbrella concept for which health falls under.
I remind you that you get to determine what wellbeing means to you and that ultimately, you can elevate your wellbeing regardless of what your circumstances are right now.

In this episode, I go over some of the pro's and con's of recording or tracking your food intake; why you might use this practice to support your nutrition and health goals, and why you might stay away from it.
Over the years I have swung from one end of the spectrum to the other, and landed somewhere in the middle in terms of if tracking food is worthwhile or not.
As with most things in the nutrition space, I think tracking food is an individual choice and should be aligned with your goals and your history. It isn't for everyone, it can be helpful for some and ultimately it is up to you if you think it will support you.
I would love to know your thoughts on this topic - do you find tracking helpful or have you found it to be more harm than good? Let me know on Instagram.

What does it mean to be plant based? What foods can you eat on a vegan diet? Is a vegan and plant based diet the same thing?
There is often some confusion around what is meant by a plant based, vegan and vegetarian diet. This was made apparent to me seeing a recent post on a nutrition science page on Facebook, and a recent conversation with a family member.
In this episode, I chat about the difference between these terms, go into a little bit of detail around vegan lifestyle and how this goes beyond just what a person eats and share my opinion on if this even matters.

It is that time of year…everyone is setting 2022 goals. And I am here for it!
Setting goals is a big love of mine. Why? Because goal setting inspires change and empowers people to achieve their biggest desires. When done right that is!
With changes to lifestyle, nutrition and health habits, goal setting is really helpful. Quite important too. How can you get to where you want to go, if you don’t know what or where that is? Or your reasons as to why you want to get there?
In this episode, I share my ‘12+1 goal setting method’ which is a mix of a couple of approaches I have used over the years and have found to work well for me and my personality type. I chat through the steps to set your goals, process vs. outcome goals and some common mistakes people make when goal setting.

You have probably seen it and heard it, the constant messaging from PT's and sometimes health coaches "You need to be in a calorie deficit to lose weight, nothing else matters" or some version of that.
Well, I am here to tell you that that messaging is not helpful for people who are pursuing a healthful life and seeking to make positive change. I realise this could be an unpopular opinion, which is totally fine. That is what Mel's Soapbox is all about! This episode will explain why I have this position, and what I think we should be focusing on instead.
I am not denying that the theory and equation of 'energy in + energy out' is correct; it is spot on. My perspective is that spewing this messaging is often missing the bigger picture, and guiding people to focus on this is missing more important aspects of eating, nutrition, exercise and overall wellbeing.

This very first Wellbeings episode is with Trang Nguyen, a Melbourne based physiotherapist, personal performance coach and friend of mine!
Trang’s mission is to guide people to achieve their greatest potential, so they can use their power to contribute to a flourishing world.
Trang works in a variety of ways, which she will touch on in our interview. She utilises her framework - The Thriving Three - to help people perform at their best AND also experience fulfilment in doing this.
In this chat, we talk about Trang’s perspective on the role of wellbeing in high achievement, the key pillars that are essential for achieving success while also finding fulfilment, some challenges she has experienced with eating while in the fitness and physique competition world and quite a bit more.
Through her own experiences and working with clients, Trang discovered that success in itself isn't always enough to create fulfilled lives or serve a greater world. From this, she developed a vision for a flourishing world where people are thriving within themselves, and all beings live in harmony with one another.
Trang supports her clients to step into their highest selves through running & strength coaching, physiotherapy services and personal mentoring.
I hope you enjoy this episode as much as we enjoyed creating it!
