Jacob Wendt leads from behind the drum kit without treating every song like a personal drum clinic. His forthcoming album, The Gallery, arrives in late summer and was recorded by Kevin Gray at Cohearent Recording, aka “Hackensack West,” using an all-valve signal path from microphone to cutter head.

In this episode of the eCoustics Podcast, Eric Pye (@audioloveyyc) and Mitch Anderson (@black_circle_radio) join Wendt and Gray to discuss the new album, Wendt’s previous release Silver Street, quintet chemistry, horn arrangements, live versus studio recording, and the difficult art of leading a band without elbowing everyone else out of the spotlight.

In this episode, Matt Yocum, an SVS artist and working film sound engineer, explains how modern movie soundtracks are built and why low frequency clarity plays a critical role in shaping the final experience. Drawing on his work across major film and television projects, Yocum discusses how much of what audiences hear is created in post production, how he approaches mixing for the LFE channel using SVS subwoofers, including the SB 4000, and why he often relies on dual subwoofer setups instead of one. The conversation also explores why SVS has become part of his workflow and what that says about the demands of contemporary film sound design.

In this episode, we sit down with Jordan Pries, owner of The Electric Kitsch record store in Bay City, Michigan and working musician (he wrote our podcast theme song!), for a clear eyed look at what it takes to survive and stay relevant through 14 years of industry shifts and the rise of Record Store Day.

From the early days of RSD to today’s global frenzy, Jordan breaks down what has changed, what has not, and what customers rarely see, including the financial realities, supply chain headaches, and the role RSD plays in keeping the lights on. We also explore how running a shop intersects with life as a musician, shaping how music is valued on both sides of the counter, and whether Record Store Day still delivers for the independent stores it was built to support or just makes for one very long Saturday.

Recorded from the show floor at AXPONA 2026, the team from SVS breaks down their latest powered subwoofer, the SVS 3000 Micro R|Evolution, and why this compact design hits harder than it has any right to. If you’re lining up for Record Store Day 2026, this episode focuses on the one name that matters most: Zev Feldman, known as The Jazz Detective. Best known for his first-release live recordings of Bill Evans on Resonance and Elemental, Feldman has already delivered 14 Evans RSD titles, with a 15th arriving April 18.

For Record Store Day 2026, he goes further than ever with 11 new jazz releases (including the Evans) across Resonance, Elemental, and Time Traveler Recordings, the label he co founded to bring back rare and hard to find 1970s jazz albums from the Muse catalog. This is not filler for collectors. It is a serious expansion of what Record Store Day can deliver.

Join Eric Pye and Mitch Anderson as they break down the full slate, the continued demand for the Bill Evans RSD series, and the reality of tracking down and restoring lost recordings. At the center is Feldman’s latest discovery, a deep archive from legendary Chicago club owner Joe Segal, now driving an ongoing series of never before heard live albums, with five debuting for RSD 2026. If you care about jazz, vinyl, and making smart choices before the lines form, this conversation gives you a real advantage.

Japan has become the world’s most in demand travel destination since the pandemic, but beyond cherry blossoms, bullet trains, Lawson runs, anime and those dangerously good 7-Eleven egg salad sandwiches, there’s a deeper pull that audiophiles can’t ignore.

In this episode of the eCoustics podcast, resident Japanophile Eric Pye (@audioloveyyc) and reluctant future convert Mitch Anderson (@blackcircleradio) go all in on Japan’s cultural gravity and its quiet takeover of audio: the pilgrimage to e-Earphone, late night jazz kissa listening rooms, Technics heritage, Three Blind Mice pressings, JICO styli, portable travel rigs, flying JAL, record hunting in back alleys, and why Japan still treats music as ritual instead of background noise. This isn’t tourism hype it’s immersion, listening culture, and what the rest of us may have forgotten.

Vacuum tubes are supposed to be extinct yet here we are in 2026 still arguing swapping and occasionally getting electrocuted. In this episode Mitch Anderson, Eric Pye, and Jeremy Sikora strip the romance out of valves and talk about why they still matter without leaning on lazy audiophile clichés.

The discussion cuts through tube rolling reality versus placebo and the ongoing new production versus NOS debate. It also looks at why Ray Tubes are suddenly on everyone’s radar and what Jeremy’s amp building class at the American Wireless Communication Museum teaches you that spec sheets never will.

Along the way, we connect the dots between Talk Talk’s obsessive studio craft, Miles Davis with Jimmy Cobb’s unshakable timing, and the Tron soundtrack, while getting very real about tube amp safety; from blown parts to painful zaps, because high voltage does not care how experienced you think you are.

eCoustics Vintage Editor Eric Pye and Producer Mitch Anderson sit down with Dave Kelley, President of KLH, for a grounded conversation on loudspeaker design, KLH’s history, and how a legacy brand operates in today’s market without leaning on nostalgia as a crutch.

The discussion traces the influence of Henry Kloss, the shared DNA linking Klipsch, Kelley, Kyocera, and KLH, and how those ideas continue to inform real-world speaker engineering. Attention turns to KLH’s current lineup—specifically the Model Three, Model Five, and Model Seven—with the Five and Seven competing for Eric’s eCoustics 2025 Editors’ Choice Floorstanding Loudspeakers vote based on listening, not legacy.

If you want a clear-eyed look at where KLH has been and why its modern speakers still deserve serious consideration, this episode delivers without the marketing gloss.

In this episode, the eCoustics team cut through a year of hype, delays, and eyebrow-raising price hikes to talk about the products that genuinely moved the needle across hi-fi, head-fi, and home theater. We cover the TVs and projectors that finally earned their bragging rights, the headphones and earbuds that didn’t just chase trends, and the loudspeakers and portable gear that reminded us why good engineering still matters.

It’s a wide-ranging, candid discussion about what impressed us.And because the timing couldn’t be better, the ink is barely dry on our massive eCoustics Editors’ Choice awards list. If you want to know which products actually earned a spot—and which ones quietly didn’t—you’ll want to listen first, then check the list.Less hype. More perspective. And no participation trophies.

Back in the 80s and 90s, earplugs at a concert were a one-way ticket to dweeb status. Protecting your hearing? Please. You might as well have stayed home with a VHS and some Tang. These days it’s the opposite—walk into any venue and half the crowd is rocking hi-fi earplugs that make the music sound better and keep your ears intact.

Etymotic’s new Music Pro Elite are at the front of that shift, and Tim Monroe, Sr. Director of Engineering, along with Chris Roth, Principal Engineer at Etymotic Research, join us to break down why and how these things work so damn well.

The Rhino in the room can’t be ignored: after decades in the vault, Buckingham Nicks is finally getting a reissue. eCoustics Editors Eric Pye, Jeremy Sikora, and producer Mitch Anderson team up with mastering engineer Kevin Gray (Cohearent Audio) to dig into why this cult classic vanished, why it’s back now, and what it means for fans who’ve been chasing scratched LPs for years. Along the way, we get into the bigger picture—the state of the reissue market, the future of vinyl cutting, and why Fleetwood Mac drama still drives the mythology around this record. Chaos may have fueled the Mac, but this one’s all about clarity.

While Apple Music, TIDAL and Amazon Music are all pushing spatial audio and immersive sound as the next big thing, the current reality is that, to get the best, most immersive effect, you need speakers: lots and lots of speakers. Of course, you can listen to immersive sound formats like Dolby Atmos and DTS:X on headphones, but the current processes to render a multi-channel recording into a 2-channel binaural signal, suitable for playback on headphones, leave room for improvement.
APL (Advanced Psychoacoustics Lab) is dedicated to fixing this problem. The company's Virtuoso software can convert any 2-channel or multi-channel recording to a standard binaural headphone mix that maintains all the sonic cues of a real three-dimensional mix or space. Join eCoustics CEO Brian Mitchell on this episode of the eCoustics podcast as he chats with APL founder Professor Hyunkook Lee to discuss the current state of immersive sound over headphones and what can be done to make it better.

Event host Brian Gluck, emcee Phil Jones and judge Chris Boylan discuss the details of how the contenders were selected, what went down in the showdown and why the picture settings were what they were at the event.

For the last 18 years the vinyl record industry in the U.S. has sustained a continuous uptick in sales. So when a report last month by Luminate, the leading music industry source for tracking music consumption, indicated a precipitous 33% drop during the first half of 2024, it caused quite a stir. Since then, Luminate has retracted its original report, and followed up with a corrected report saying vinyl sales were actually up 2.2% in 2024.

To find why this happened, we speak with Chris Muratore, Director at Luminate and music industry insider Billy Fields from Warner Music Group.

Ultimately counting record sales isn’t as easy as it may seem. Although Luminate gets accurate accounting of record sales from major online websites and big box retailers, sales from independent record stores (“indies”) are harder to come by. That wouldn’t be such a big deal, except for the fact that an estimated 40% of record sales are from indies in the U.S. So with only a small fraction of indies reporting vinyl sales, Luminate has always estimated the indie portion in its reports. But how they estimate matters.

A small change in Luminate’s estimation algorithm caused a dramatic turn of events. But there is more to the story of vinyls resurgence, so we hope you’ll tune in to take a deep dive into the vinyl music industry.

While TV picture quality continues to improve, TV sound quality is still pretty terrible, maybe even worse than it used to be. What's a poor movie and music lover to do? Will a cheap soundbar do the trick or is it really necessary to bite the bullet and go with a component-based sound system? Maybe something in between?

Listen in as eCoustics founder Brian Mitchell and editor-at-large Chris Boylan discuss what options are out there now and whether you can get great sound at home without complicated set-up or a huge investment.

There’s no denying that movie theater attendance and revenues still haven’t recovered from the pandemic. In fact, 2024 looks like it may end significantly weaker than 2023 for box office revenue. With inexpensive 98-inch TVs, great sounding home theater systems and soundbars, is there even a future for the movie theater? And if so, what does that look like?

Join the conversation with eCoustics Editor-in-Chief Ian White and Editor-at-Large Chris Boylan as they discuss the current and possible future state of movies in theaters and in the home.

Streaming has become the dominant format for both music listening and video viewing. Music streaming services account for 84% of all music listening and 89% of music industry revenue. Video streaming services account for approximately 95% of the home video market. Fully 99% of US households subscribe to one or more video streaming services as of 2023. Many video streaming services can deliver video in high quality 4K resolution with HDR (High Dynamic Range) for a gorgeous image. But those who seek out and appreciate the finest possible sound quality may find actually getting that high quality sound through a streaming service is more complicated than it should be.

In this episode, eCoustics founder and CEO Brian Mitchell and Editor-at-Large Chris Boylan discuss the options out there for high quality audio including immersive sound, aka “spatial audio,” lossless music and even high resolution audio. Which services do it right? Which do it wrong? Listen in to find out.

While speaker company SVS is known for their bargain-priced high quality Prime Series loudspeakers, the company just launched a new flagship line called the Ultra Evolution. It's actually more of a revolution than an evolution with all new drivers, new crossovers and a completely new industrial design. With diamond-coated tweeters and an angled cabinet design to assure time alignment and phase coherence, the SVS Ultra Evolution offers both the sound quality and the look of much more expensive audiophile loudspeakers.

In this podcast, we chat with Gary Yacoubian, CEO and President and Nick Brown, VP of Marketing for SVS who discuss the details of the SVS Ultra Evolution loudspeaker line: what makes them special and why they took more than two years to design and manufacture.

Now that all five major TV makers have shown off their 2024 flagship TVs, it's time to talk about which TVs we believe are in the running for best TV of 2024. Will OLED win the day or will it finally be toppled by a Mini LED TV? Ultimately, no TV is perfect for all content in every environment. But the key is to pick the best TV for your specific needs.

We chat with Caleb Denison, Editor at Large for Digital Trends to compare notes on which new TVs from Sony, Hisense, TCL, LG and Samsung are most likely to earn the top marks overall and which factors, including black level performance, brightness, contrast, color reproduction, bright room performance and - of course - SIZE - go into the decision of which TV to buy in 2024.

In this episode we speak with Sven Mevissen, Director of Product Management, Home and Media Solutions, Xperi (parent company to DTS) to discuss the IMAX Enhanced program and the role that DTS:X plays in delivering immersive cinematic sound to home viewers. As of May 15, 2024, Disney+ is the first mainstream streaming service to bring the IMAX Enhanced experience with DTS:X sound into your home. The first of such titles includes the "Queen Rock Montreal" concert film as well as 18 films from the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

DTS:X immersive sound differs from traditional surround by adding a height dimension that enables sound to come from not just all around you but above you as well. The partnership between IMAX and DTS allows home viewers to experience IMAX visuals and the IMAX theatrical audio mix at home for the first time.
However, all subscribers of Disney+ may not be able to experience the full impact of IMAX Enhanced with DTS:X sound unless their equipment is compatible. We dive into all the details.

The gear fetishism that has stunted the mainstream growth of high-end audio for almost four decades is about to run out of runway and that might be the most positive development in years. How we consume music has completely shifted and whilst there will always be room on the credenza for a turntable, or even a CD player, the reality is that real estate at home is a hot commodity, and most consumers want fewer boxes for their music listening journey.

Just what is a network amplifier and why should you consider one as your last Hi-Fi system? We explain this week on the podcast with some help from our friends at NAD, WiiM, Bluesound, Naim, Cambridge Audio, and more…

Audeze’s Co-Founder & CEO, Sankar Thiagasamudram, joins eCoustics Senior Headphone & Portables Editor William Jennings and Producer (and Audeze Artist) Mitch Anderson to discuss its 16 year journey as an innovator in the global Head-Fi revolution.

Founded in 2008 as a boutique audiophile brand, Audeze's first concept was a loudspeaker which never came to market. However, early innovations with planar magnetic technology led to the release of their first headphone, the LCD-1 for $600 — making it one of the most expensive headphones available in 2008. All 25 models sold, which led to the release of the LCD-2 in 2009 and LCD-3 in 2011. Both models became award-winning benchmarks for headphone design and turned what was a cottage industry aimed exclusively at high-end headphone listeners into a billion dollar segment.

Audeze's success also created opportunities for its competitors to expand into the planar magnetic category, forcing the brand to push the envelope with state-of-the-art professional monitoring headphones, electrostatic headphones for the medical industry, and innovative gaming headphones that attracted the attention of Sony Interactive Entertainment which purchased the company last year -- exposing the brand to a much larger mainstream global audience and giving it a growing customer base for the future.

Nearly all of Audeze’s products are hand-made in Costa Mesa, CA, including all LCD and MM series headphones and the Playstation headset drivers.

Sankar takes us on a journey through Audeze’s history and reveals interesting insights about the company’s history, headphone manufacturing, and their path ahead.

Can we finally stop pretending that wireless loudspeakers offer an inferior listening experience. The desire to sell high-end audio systems consisting of expensive boxes made of ticky tacky has become an impediment to the growth of the next generation of audiophiles and brands like Q Acoustics are working very hard to offer the best possible passive and wireless loudspeakers for less. And they are succeeding.

Jamie McKay, Sales & Marketing Director, and Nick Renshaw, PR Manager, of Q Acoustics join us on this edition of the eCoustics podcast to discuss their award-winning 5000 series loudspeakers and the new M40 wireless micro-towers that are going to turn a lot of heads. High-end audio is evolving and it's time to cut the cord.

With consumers spending tens of billions of dollars on headphones and earbuds, the product has become a commodity and one that is rather disposable. But does that need to be the case? Have you thrown away a perfectly good pair of earbuds or headphones because the ear pads or ear tips are worn down or busted up?

Dekoni Audio have not only cornered the market on replacement pads for some of the most popular consumer and audiophile models on the market, but they have altered the way they sound. If you think you have heard "everything" from your existing pair of headphones or earbuds? Think again. Tal Kocen and Dylan Scarzafava of Dekoni have a great story to tell and a lot to teach you.

In September 2023, vintage columnist Eric Pye (@audioloveyyc) spent three weeks in Japan pursuing audio perfection in all forms. In this episode of the eCoustics podcast, he and podcast producer Mitch Anderson (@black_circle_radio) discuss shopping in Japan for modern and vintage HiFi, and new and used music on vinyl and other mediums.

Conversation meanders to Japanese audiophilia and the obsession with quality, Japanese jazz artists (including Ryo Fukui, Tsuyoshi Yamamoto and Isao Suzuki), and why classical music is still so popular when interest has fallen off in many other countries.

eCoustics Senior Headphone Editor W. Jennings recently sat down with Vincent Liu, Ultimate Ears Pro’s Head of Product & Operations for a conversation about the new Premier 21-driver IEM. This discussion touches on the impacts of the pandemic on Ultimate Ears Pro and how that provided opportunities to rethink some design elements of existing models as well as complete the development and testing of the new Premier.

Also discussed in this conversation is UE Pro’s dedication to performing artists, their design philosophy and about where the new Premier’s signature fits into the product line. Many expected the Premier to be a UE18 Pro taken to the next level but the signatures are different and the two in-ears are aimed at different market segments. Finally, there was talk about some of the things that set Ultimate Ears Pro apart from other in-ear manufactures and where Vincent sees the company heading next.

Legendary guitarist, Al Anderson, toured with Bob Marley & The Wailers from 1974 until just before Marley’s death in 1981. Anderson's stunning lead guitar work on iconic classics like "No Woman, No Cry," "Three O’clock Road Block," and "Could You Be Loved" earned him a place in music history.

Al continues touring to this day as the sole member of the 1970s lineup with his Grammy nominated band, "The Original Wailers", which carries on the original vision of Bob Marley’s music.

His memory inducing lead guitar playing was also featured on the Platinum Award winning albums Live at the Lyceum, Babylon by Bus, and the 10 times Platinum, Legend. After Marley's death, Anderson continued to tour with The Wailers Band. Anderson went on to record with Ben Harper (Diamonds On the Inside (2003), Lauryn Hill on her multi-Grammy winning debut The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill (1998) as well as with Santana on his 9-Grammy award winning Supernatural (2000).

Al speaks with Mitch Anderson (sonically related), eCoustics podcast producer and host of Black Circle Radio, live on stage at T.H.E. Show 2023. This episode was recorded on Saturday, June 10, 2023 at T.H.E. Show 2023 at the Hilton Orange County/Costa Mesa California.

In our third installment with Gryphon Audio Designs, we speak with Gryphon’s Sales Director, Rune Skov at T.H.E. Show 2023. He’s responsible for the company’s worldwide sales strategy, along with the daunting goal of turning Gryphon into the most sought after brand in hi-fi.

Gryphon Audio’s vision is clear. The company aims to be as recognized as the Lamborghini brand, yet exclusive to the select few who value its performance and style.

It will take more than a clever marketing message to achieve this goal. The company is building some of the finest audio products in the world in Denmark, at prices higher than one might expect. However, they deliver a full system approach, so when you buy a Gryphon system you get everything built by them — including the cables. That leaves no uncertainly for the customer, and assures every piece of audio chain is meticulously engineered to the utmost specification.

Although Gryphon Audio Designs was founded in 1985, Rune’s career trajectory has been nothing short of meteoric. After 12 fulfilling years as a teacher at a prestigious private school, Rune was recruited by Nordost and quickly rose to become one of the most prominent figures in Danish High End. Spending over 100 days per year visiting foreign dealers and distributors while studying for his MBA, Rune recently graduated with honors and has already been appointed to the Board of Directors of several large Danish corporations. Rune’s dedication, love of music and personal sense of style have contributed to Gryphon’s explosive growth and stature as one of Ultra-Luxe audio’s true icons.

The proud father of 5 beautiful children, Rune’s personal and professional life recently merged when his oldest son, Alexander Raul, joined the Gryphon team as the company’s first Sales & Marketing intern. One of the company’s major shareholders, Rune relishes his role as Gryphon’s international Brand ambassador and loves nothing more than sharing his enthusiasm for the brand and its peerless products.

Cambridge Audio has been a “music first” brand since its inception and one would like to think that every company that designs and manufactures audio components and loudspeakers shares that same ethos. With so much emphasis on the hardware, it is most certainly refreshing to see that the British manufacturer is taking a different approach to reach a new audience that is not obsessed with all of the technology that we focus on when it comes to music reproduction. All of these boxes are nothing more than instruments with which to enjoy art.

Between its new “Made by Music” Podcast and a world-class selection of high-end audio components and loudspeakers for almost every price point, Cambridge Audio is rather quickly becoming a one-stop shop for a new generation of music listeners. Coral Williamson, Communications Manager for Cambridge Audio, joins us on the podcast to discuss the Cambridge revolution and where this remarkable British brand is headed.

In the second of 7 podcasts recorded at T.H.E. Show 2023, we expand our conversation into the distribution arm of Denmark’s ultra-luxe brand, Gryphon Audio Designs. We speak with Anthony Chiarella, Director of Sales & Marketing for Gryphon Audio Designs N.A., which was established as a wholly owned subsidiary of the brand headquartered in Denmark to manage marketing and distribution across Gryphon’s North American retailer partners. Anthony shares his unique background and provides an industry insider’s perspective of the audio distribution business..

Anthony officially became an audio geek at the age of 13 when he joined his high school AV Club (“We got beaten-up by the football team every Friday!”) and by 16 he was working as an Audio Salesman at New York’s notorious Crazy Eddie. After earning his MBA, he achieved success on Wall Street but soon realized he was more interested in HiFi than High Finance and took a sales position at Lyric HiFi, then the mecca for High End Audio, where he met many industry luminaries including Harry Pearson, Founder and Publisher of The Absolute Sound (TAS). Anthony soon started writing for TAS and most other High End mags and wound up freelancing for Maxim, Esquire, GQ and other mainstream Men’s Magazines. At the same time, some of the companies about whose products he was writing were looking for sales and marketing help, which led him to found Specialty Sound and Vision (SSV), a NY Metro Rep Firm, in 1996. Dedicated to working with the territory’s best retailers, SSV is considered “THE High End Rep Firm.” After the Great Recession, most of the NY Metro retailers closed, so SSV became a National Sales Management company, representing Gryphon, Brinkmann and other Ultra-Luxe High End Manufacturers across the US and Canada.

You know you want to. Say it twice. Naim. Founded by Julian Vereker MBE (1945-2000) in 1973, Naim Audio have been one of the linchpins of the high-end audio movement for fifty years and their hard-earned success is not something that they are taking for granted. The British manufacturer has never played by the rules and that has contributed significantly to their positioning and design ethos.

It is not a brand that creates feelings of ambivalence within the audio world; audiophiles either love or hate it. The marriage to Focal, one of the largest high-end loudspeaker brands in the world, took a lot of people by surprise and there were certainly some valid questions about how the two legacy brands situated across the English Channel from one another would work together and grow.

Has it worked?

Naim Brand Ambassador, Jason Gould, joins EIC Ian White to discuss the first fifty years, the legacy of the late-Julian Vereker, streaming, and why the brand is well-positioned to grow rather significantly over the next decade.

Driving change in any industry is difficult; it took Apple more than two decades to become the leading media and technology brand in the world and in the process completely changed how people consume music, movies, and television. On a much smaller scale, Focal is changing how high-end consumers listen to music outdoors, while traveling, at their desks, and in the home. Their award-winning loudspeakers and headphones can be found in every corner of the globe and their Focal Powered by Naim retail experience is winning converts across North America, Asia, and Europe. The French manufacturer took the long-term view and it is paying off. How did Focal get here? EIC Ian White sat down with Focal Marketing Product Manager, Rejean Bedel, to discuss the past, present, and where the Focal/Naim family is headed.

In the first of 7 podcasts recorded at T.H.E. Show 2023, we begin our conversation with Danish high-end audio manufacturer, Gryphon Audio Designs. We speak with Joseph Cali, owner of the premiere Southern California dealer for this ultra high-end Danish brand. Topics include Joe’s rich history in high-end audio, with a special focus on Gryphon Audio electronics and loudspeakers, as well the love of music that led him to connect with Gryphon.

Currently, Joe is the CEO of Joseph Cali Systems Design, a bespoke high-end audio integrator with two locations in Los Angeles; however, he started as a Gryphon Dealer in 2017 in NY where he opened a dedicated Gryphon Demo System Showroom inside the Stereo Exchange Loft.

Joseph has a storied history in hi-fi and music as well as motion pictures. He was a professional actor, with starring and co-starring roles in “Saturday Night Fever”, “The Competition”, "The Lonely Lady”, “Voices”, "Suicide Kings”, "Today's FBI”, and “Flatbush”. He has worked as a recording Engineer and Executive Producer on Lori Lieberman albums: Monterey, Bend Like Steel, Gun Metal Sky, Ready For The Storm, and The Girl and The Cat, and will continue those duties on future Lori Lieberman productions. He also Executive Produced: A Thousand Dreams, Home Of Whispers and Gone Is The Girl for Pope Music, and Truly for Drive On Records. In addition, he co-founded Cello Music and Film Systems with the renowned Mark Levinson.

Joseph has had a love affair with music since his parents pushed back the dining room table, put big band music on the RCA HiFi Console and danced the nights away. From there, he joined the Columbia Record Club in High School in the mid 60's and had a Garrard Turntable with a Stanton cartridge, KLH speakers and a Kenwood integrated amp. The obsession never stopped. System after system, for over 50 years from Audio Research and Magneplanars to his advocacy of Cello, and now Gryphon, sharing his love of music is in his soul.

Has the time come for Bluetooth to take a necessary step forward? Does it really make a difference which codec your headphones or source device support? The quiet release of Bluetooth version 5.2 three years ago set the stage for the future of the wireless protocol. New features have been added to Bluetooth’s core specification, including improvements to audio fidelity, which are set to begin making their way into the market this year.

Some of the new Bluetooth features are:

• Auracast enables audio broadcasting, allowing a single device to transmit to an unlimited number of devices in proximity.

• LC3 (Low Complexity Communications Codec) is the next generation Bluetooth audio (aka “LE Audio”) standard which improves upon the original (“classic”) audio protocol (SBC). Although still a lossy codec, it can use less power to extend battery life, while a new psychoacoustic compression algorithm improves audio fidelity.

In this episode, we speak with John Yi, Founder and CEO of Packetcraft — a provider of Bluetooth solutions for device makers. Join us on a deep dive into the future of Bluetooth and what to look out for later this year.

There is always a bit of a risk when a company introduces a new loudspeaker range meant to satisfy the needs of the middle of the market; especially when said manufacturer has already established itself as a category leader below $1,000 and in the segment above $3,000. Can they find that magic again in a segment of the market that often struggles to attract mainstream attention?

The Q Acoustics 5000 Series of loudspeakers aims to fill that void with 5 new models designed for both music and home theater systems. What makes them different from the award-winning 3000 series that have dominated the entry-level category?

EIC Ian White sits down in this exclusive podcast with Q Acoustics' Brand Manager, Alex Munro, to discuss everything you need to know about these exciting new products.

One of the challenges facing those who want to enjoy immersive surround sound at home is the need for lots of speaker wires. WiSA (Wireless Speaker and Audio Association) is eliminating the need for speaker cables by enabling up to 8 speakers to connect wirelessly from a single source. That means it can work for both stereo listening and for home theater, supporting Dolby Atmos 5.1.2.

A few established audio brands are already integrating WiSA into their products such as Bang & Olufsen, Klipsch, Platin, LG and Dynaudio. What makes WiSA appealing to audiophiles is its ability to transmit uncompressed lossless and hi-res audio wirelessly.

In this episode we talk about the future of wireless home audio with Tony Ostrom, President of WiSA. Tony has a 25-year career in the consumer electronics industry and has previously worked in product development and marketing roles for Klipsch, House of Marley, Powermat, and JL Audio. Tony has a BA in Music Engineering and a Minor in Physics from Ball State University.

Will your next wireless speakers support WiSA? There’s a good chance they will.

Wireless loudspeakers took a huge step forward in performance in 2022 and it is easy to understand why mainstream consumers and seasoned audiophiles are taking the plunge. How people consume music has changed and reflects shifting priorities when it comes to home audio/video systems. People want fewer components, easier connectivity, and the ability to create 2.0 or 2.1 systems that can enhance their listening and movie watching experience.

Ian White, eCoustics Editor in-Chief, explains why wireless loudspeakers are going to replace traditional passive systems in the next 5 years and selects some of his favorite high-end wireless loudspeakers of 2022. The next golden age of Hi-Fi is already here.

About Mitch Anderson:

All-vinyl broadcaster since 2009 via Black Circle Radio. Avid musician since the age of 8. Active recording artist. Mitch performs, records, mixes, masters, and cuts records with a pretty darn eclectic hybrid of vintage and modern equipment. If it's the right sound, then it's the right equipment.

https://www.sourceoflightandpower.bandcamp.com
https://www.instagram.com/black_circle_radio/

About Eric Pye:

Eric’s journey into vintage audio began in 2015 when his mum gave him the old family Technics SA-500 Receiver that had been sitting under the living room sofa for over 20 years. Soon after, his brother gave him an old Sansui AU-555 Integrated Amplifier. Two services and full recaps later, he was sold on both the nostalgia and quality of vintage equipment, and down the rabbit hole he plunged.

His Instagram journey began a few years earlier as @headfiyyc (YYC the code for Calgary Airport), with a focus on headphones and portable audio. As he dove deeper into vintage, his account focus shifted to amps, speakers and eventually turntables, with a heavy dose of jazz, resulting in a name change to @audioloveyyc to more accurately capture his account vibe. He currently has over 45K jazz and gear-head followers, many of whom have also become friends.

About Jeremy Sikora:

Jeremy has always been a music lover, but his path into the vintage realm started with a gifted Technics SL-1700 Turntable which sat with a broken stylus until it was paired with Marantz 2245 and Jensen Model 4 Speakers in 2018. From there the curiosity of “what else can I play music on” within a budget took over. Jeremy remains a fan of all things vintage, anything with an Ohm emblem, vacuum tubes, and especially a love for the fringe equipment of the hobby… and Depeche Mode.

As he learned so much from others on IG he created his own page @budget_audiophiler and shares his hits and misses of his audio journey with his 100k followers. The vintage audio game on IG is strong, welcoming, and generous!

Over the past 7 decades, consumers have had access to a myriad of hi-fi components that were not necessarily good or even useful. Reel-to-Reel Tape Decks get a lot of attention on the used market and with new models and pre-recorded open reel tapes gaining traction with audiophiles once again, there are a lot of factors to consider before taking the plunge. The format can offer a superior sonic experience when done correctly, but you do need to learn the basics so you don't end up with a very expensive paper weight on your rack. The eCoustics Vintage team discusses the various types of decks, maintenance, tapes, operation, and where to start your journey. The reel truth about R2R Tape Decks is that they are worth the effort. Let's begin.

In part 3 of 7 in our podcast series on vintage audio we talk speakers. This episode is moderated by Mitch Anderson of Black Circle Radio with our vintage hi-fi experts Eric Pye and Jeremy Sikora.

Consumers and manufacturers love to wax poetically about “vintage” when it comes to loudspeakers, but the truth is that many of them require a lot of work and some luck if the previous owners have been less than gentle with them. There are some hidden gems to be found but unless you have done your homework – you can end up with an expensive bookend. The eCoustics Vintage Audio team covers everything you need to know before you buy. Is there truly magic to be found in old speakers? We think so.

In part 2 of 7 in our podcast series on vintage audio we examine both old and modern playback devices you may want to consider. This episode is hosted by our vintage hi-fi experts Eric Pye and Jeremy Sikora and moderated by Mitch Anderson of Black Circle Radio

Integrating legacy devices including cassette decks and CD players into a vintage audio system is not difficult but are there any technical pitfalls that you might not be aware of? Adding digital streaming sources such as a network player, tablet, DAP, or smartphone can be achieved rather easily as well but will you require special adapters? The eCoustics Vintage Audio team simplifies all of this and discusses some of its favorite sources so that you don't skip a beat.

In this episode of the eCoustics podcast our producer Mitch Anderson hosts a conversation with eCoustics vintage columnists Jeremy Sikora, @budget_audiophiler and Eric Pye, @audioloveyyc. This conversation is pretty rad to listen to for a couple reasons. First of all, T.H.E Show 2022 was the first HIFI audio show experience for both of them. Secondly, given their dedication to educating the audio community that great sound can be found for any budget, being surrounded by equipment that at times nearly pushed 7 figures... it made for some wonderful takeaways. Especially in the headphone/dac space, as well as in the world of vacuum tubes. Eric and Jeremy's vintage audio focused podcast series is still in the works, so make shure to subscribe to the channel to keep up to date on that! Enjoy!

This podcast explores the company’s mission, early customer feedback, and hints at future features and some unannounced new products.

Priced at $2,500 each, Cell Alpha is unlike any speaker on the market and is a bold attempt to redefine the home listening experience.

Now with $48 million in funding, Syng is the brainchild of former Apple industrial designer, Christopher Stringer, who contributed to numerous products over his 22 years at Apple including the iPod, iPhone, iPad, HomePod, AirPods Max and many more.

Even with Apple pedigree, can Syng take on the high-end audio establishment or create a whole new market?

In this special episode, we sit down with one of the original audiophile reviewers on YouTube; Sean of Zero Fidelity. He first launched his YouTube channel in 2015 which has amassed nearly 15 million views and 70,000 loyal subscribers. As one of the most well-known and outspoken reviewers in the audiophile community, chances are if you’ve been searching for high-end audio information on YouTube, you’ve come across Sean’s videos. He has a unique talent for being able to accurately communicate what equipment actually sounds like and his lack of pretense or "I know better than you" attitude has made him a go-to resource for thousands of audiophiles around the world.

The discussion also reveals some of Sean's background in the hi-fi industry and how he acquired an arsenal of knowledge listening to so many audio components at a relatively young age.

Sean has his finger on the pulse of the YouTube hi-fi community, and the audio industry as a whole. Few know that Sean’s expertise in the hi-fi industry extends much deeper than just reviewing, which is why he still calls his YouTube channel a hobby, despite its success.

Our lively debate this week on the ecoustics podcast centers around how the Spotify/Joe Rogan controversy will reshape the streaming music landscape. At this time Spotify is still the dominant streaming music platform holding around 31% marketshare, followed by Apple Music (15%) and Amazon Music (13%) according to a Q2 2021 report. By the end of 2021 Spotify revealed 180 million Premium subscribers in their Q4 2021 financial statements.

With the most to lose, Spotify is doubling down on keeping The Joe Rogan Experience podcast on its platform for the time being, despite a trickle of musicians requesting removal of their music which started with Neil Young.

With music streaming platforms in the spotlight, the question of how much creators make per music stream is of greater significance than the debate of the moment. Most people may be be shocked to learn that tiny fractions of their subscription fee makes it into the hands of their favorite performers.

Is Spotify finding every loophole not to pay artists, or are their hands tied by the music labels and the competition? In 2021, Spotify collected over $3 Billion USD (2,689 EUR), but the company can’t even break even year-over-year. Where is the money going if it is not going to creators?

We do know $100 million of it went to Joe Rogan. But shouldn’t that money have been divided up amongst all the great musicians on Spotify?

We go on the record this week with Dr. Mark Waldrep; an innovator, educator, and author of the book “Music and Audio: A User Guide to Better Sound.” After more than 40 years in the audio and music industry as an audio engineer, music producer, and owner of a Hi-Res audio music label (AIX Records) and download platform (iTrax.com), Dr. Waldrep has some rather candid views about the state of the high-end audio industry and its marketing campaign to sell Hi-Res audio to the masses.

Physical media is dead right? The 2021 H1 sales data would beg to differ. Americans purchased more than 20 million new records during the first 6 months of 2021, 18 million new CDs, and over 100,000 new audio cassettes. Physical media is the only “real” way artists make money – especially when they have not toured for the past 18 months. We have strong opinions about this and you might want to find out why physical media and the concept of “ownership” is refusing to die.

The ecoustics team takes a hard look at the future of VOD, movies, movie theaters, and how we all adapted to a new reality during the COVID-19 pandemic. Black Widow has already proven that moviegoers are desperate for stale popcorn and mayhem on the big screen, but the opening weekend VOD numbers tell a very different story and suggest that millions of consumers have warmed to the idea of blockbuster movies at home.

Record Store Day has turned into a global celebration of music and a very important event for the music industry, independent record store owners, and those of us committed to vinyl playback. Music fans around the globe just celebrated Part One of Record Store Day 2021, and while for most the day was a huge success, not everything about it went off without a hitch.

The flippers and gougers have returned. Grumblings about favoritism towards specific retailers abound and we interviewed one Michigan-based retailer who had a lot to say about the importance of the day and the politics behind it. The ecoustics team digs deep into the topic and how it was experienced across N. America.

Special thank you to Jordan Pries, co-owner of The Electric Kitsch in Bay City, Michigan for taking the time to have this conversation with us. More information on the store here: https://www.facebook.com/electrickitsch

Apple, Amazon and Spotify have jumped onboard the lossless and Hi-Res lossless streaming train finally but what will it really mean for music listeners. Is Apple really committed to lossless steaming or is Spatial Audio the next new thing for them as none of their existing wireless headphones support lossless streaming. What will this mean for Tidal and Qobuz who have carried the torch for more than 5 years already.

In this episode, the ecoustics team continues the discussion about the dramatic changes in digital music streaming and what you need to know before upgrading, migrating, and picking the right one for you. It’s a bit of a mess right now to be quite honest.

In case you haven’t noticed, Blue Note Records has been killing it over the last couple of years with the “Tone Poet” series of classic and contemporary jazz reissues. The all-analogue, Joe Harley curated, Kevin Gray remastered series launched in 2019. Each release is mastered from the original master tapes, pressed on 180g audiophile vinyl at RTI and packaged in an old-style Stoughton “Tip-On” jacket.

Harley picks top sellers and underrated classics from the Blue Note catalogue and their umbrella labels, including Pacific Jazz and United Artists. New titles sell like hot-cakes, and can be gone within days if you don’t strike quick. This episode features a conversation with Joe and Kevin in the studio at Cohearent Audio. They discuss how new titles are selected, the challenges of using original master tapes, the mastering and production process, and more.

There may even be a slip of a title or two from the yet-to-be-announced 2022-23 line-up.

With the flip of a switch, the world's 3 largest digital music streaming platforms tossed MP3s into the dustbin of history this week. And not a moment too soon. Apple Music and Amazon Music have enabled CD-quality or higher streaming for all subscribers for $9.99/month. Spotify have announced they will follow suit, but haven’t set a date. All Amazon Music subscribers now have access to higher quality music, which previously incurred a $5/month surcharge for Amazon Music HD. Apple Music subscribers simply need to opt-in on their Apple device beginning June 2021. How do all of these developments impact Tidal and Qobuz? This episode examines all of these announcements and how it will impact digital music streaming going forward.

Even after 10 years of double-digit growth, the vinyl industry can barely keep up with the demand for records in 2021. Fueled by the lockdown of hundreds of millions of consumers around the globe during the COVID-19 pandemic, the music industry is looking for ways to keep the momentum going as live music begins again and people venture out to travel and return to the office.

In this debut episode, the ecoustics editorial team takes a deep dive into the state of vinyl, record stores, the importance of social media for artists during the pandemic, and the newfound interest in turntables, record collecting, and vinyl playback at home.
