Fresh off a third-place finish at state last season, Fargo Davies girls basketball is picking up right where they left off, Cullen. The Eagles have double-digit wins over Grand Forks Central and Sheyenne this year and part of their success lies in the special bond between mother and daughter.
"I really enjoy playing for her," said Davies junior guard Ashton Safranski. "It’s kind of hard to separate home from practice. We talk about basketball home and here, so it’s just good to have her as coach."
Another week brings another prolific offense to Fargo as NDSU gets set to host Incarnate Word in the FCS semifinals Friday. UIW brings Walter Payton award front-runner Lindsay Scott. The seventh-year Cardinals quarterback has thrown 59 touchdown passes and run for nine more. He was instrumental in leading UIW past Sacramento State in Friday's quarterfinal and he'll be a handful for this young Bison defense.
North Dakota State will be playing in prime time on Friday night for a second consecutive weekend.
The Bison host Incarnate Word (Texas) at 6 p.m. Friday, Dec. 16, at Gate City Bank Field at the Fargodome in a game that is set to be televised on ESPN2. NDSU also played a Friday night game on the same network in the national quarterfinals.
Riding four straight state tournament appearances, Fargo South/Shanley boys hockey has lofty goals and high aspirations this year. The Bruins have the motivated and veteran roster to reach those goals.
"We’ve been in the big game. We know what it’s like to lose and we don’t want to feel that again," said senior forward Zach Boren
At 5-0, South/Shanley hockey hasn’t experienced that losing feeling yet this season, but the Bruins’ loss to Red River in last year’s state semifinal is sticking with them.

The plan was not for Luke Bast to come in and play 20 minutes in his first game in eight months.
The UND defenseman, who had been recovering from an upper-body injury sustained in the fall, was expecting to be eased into the lineup.
But when Fighting Hawks alternate captain Ethan Frisch left Friday's game in Bemidji with a lower-body injury in the second period and junior Tyler Kleven suffered an injury in the third, Bast was thrown into the fire.

“Our coach gave us two options there. He said hey we can either drop our heads we’re out of the playoffs or we can go out and win some games," said senior lineman Isaac Kerzman."
The Eagles finished 6-3. It’s that determination down the stretch last season they hope propels them into this season
There's a different energy to summer practices at Fargo North.
“Every team has their eyes set on a state championship, or making it to that game," said North head coach Adam Roland. "I’d be lying if I said that wasn’t a goal of ours.”
For the first time in 21 years, the Spartans are coming off a state semi-finals appearance. The goal now is to keep that momentum rolling into the new season.
On the outside, to the TV cameras, Hunter Luepke doesn't appear to be the most outgoing player on the Bison football roster.
His answers in press conferences or interview settings normally are made up a few words.
Luepke has saved his talking for the field. When asked about talking about himself and the accolades he's received as one of North Dakota State's top players, it was an obvious answer.
"Probably from the camera standpoint, it would look that way. Actually I'm not that shy of a guy, I like to hang out with the guys and have a good time." Luepke said.
It's not unusual to see Shanley make a deep playoff run, but for this year's group, their goals are beyond the semifinal round.
Fargo Shanley came closer than any other team to beating eventual 11AA champion Sheyenne, but fell to them in the state semifinals.
“Ever since we met that Monday after the state semis, these kids were focused," said head coach Troy Mattern.
This year’s goal is a trip to the Dakota Bowl.
Minnesota State Moorhead had its first fall football practice Monday, Aug. 8, at Scheels Field at Alex Nemzek Stadium.
The Dragons posted a 5-6 record overall and in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference last fall.

After being cancelled last year due to COVID-19, the IIHF World Juniors are back.
Representing Team USA for the third straight year is UND defenseman Tyler Kleven.
The Fargo native will play in the under 20 tournament that runs from Aug. 9 to Aug. 20 in Edmonton. Kleven will be working for his second straight gold medal with the team.
High school football in North Dakota began today as teams around the state held it's first practice of the season. The Horace Hawks are looking back, as they look ahead to their first season in 11A.
"This is really where the work starts to begin,” said Horace head coach Harvey McMahon.
Two years ago Horace football was just getting started.
Today, 12 of the original 14 players took the field for the Hawk’s first varsity practice.
It was a cool celebration on a hot day when the Fargo 12U All-Stars gave their coach an icewater shower after they won the state championship. It also booked their spot in the MidWest Regional.
"You didn’t feel like it was real until after it. Then you’re like, ‘oh we’re going to Indianapolis,'" said little leaguer Cormac Nagle.
Now, a new challenge in front of them. Coaches and parents have to get the team to Indiana with a chance to make the Little League World Series.
205 days ago, the Bison won their ninth FCS National title. Tomorrow, they begin defense of it.
WDAY Sports Director Dom Izzo visits with head coach Matt Entz as the Bison prepare to defend their title.
Moorhead Spuds rising senior Austin Schultz said he received an offer from North Dakota State head football coach Matt Entz on Monday morning and it didn't take Schultz long to make his decision.
“I committed on the spot," Schultz said.
Schultz verbally committed to NDSU and its the 18th known commitment for the 2023 recruiting class . The 6-foot-4, 290-pound Schultz had multiple NCAA Division I offers, including South Dakota State and St. Thomas.
Anthony Renz’s fifth season with the RedHawks is a dream filled with mixed emotions. The 29-year-old is serving as bench coach, but also partial manager.
“It’s been bittersweet. It’s easier to just kind of think about decisions, but when you’re managing a game and you’re making those decisions, there’s a sort of pressure that kind of comes with it,” said Renz.
Renz grew up as a passionate New York Mets fan, which makes it even more ironic that two decades later he’s calling the shots alongside his former bigger rival from the Philadelphia Phillies.
It may as well be considered March madness in July for the Jamestown Eagles.
On Tuesday, the seventh-seeded Eagles shocked the No. 2 seed Bismarck Governors in the opening round of the North Dakota American Legion baseball AA state tournament. Then, they upset the host No. 3 seed West Fargo Patriots Wednesday. And Thursday, No. 1 seed Fargo Post 2 was the next to fall victim.
Jamestown topped Post 2 11-8 in an offensive battle at West Fargo's Young Field, gaining the lead in the third inning and never looking back.
"This is something that I want to do, and something that I gotta do now," said Tyson Gordon.
Two years ago, Tyson Gordon arrived to play safety at NDSU.
"Coming out of high school, the NDSU offer is something that I really couldn't turn down," said Gordon.
But the Omaha native had a second love--basketball.
As the engines roar through the evening each Monday night, Lincoln Korynta can only think one thing.
"I like racing," he exclaims.
It's easy to see why the seven-year-old novice driver, along with his five-year-old brother River, look forward to raceday for six nights a week.
The sport runs in their family, starting with their grandfather, Scott Zwetzig.
"I raced in the 80s, early 90s," he said. "Raced through Lisbon, Grand Forks. I had my wife race one year before we got married."
Blake Egeland can barely remember a summer weekend when he wasn’t at the racetrack.
“I’ve missed one race since 1997,” Blake said.
He’s been right in his father’s tracks the whole time. For Blake, dad Tom and mom Julie, racing is a family affair.
“It’s all we do," Blake said. "It’s all I look forward to. It’s all we do all summer, and in the winter, it’s what we work toward for the summer.”
Today marked the 10th anniversary of the World Series. The Wiffle Ball World Series in Valley City celebrating a decade of fun.
What started as a handful of college friends simply returning home to play wiffle ball in the backyard has grown significantly in those 10 years.
"If you would have asked us back in 2013 if it was going to turn into this, we would have never guessed it," said Trevor Christiansen. "It just kind of came to fruition over all these years."
More than 7,000 wrestlers have come to Fargo for the USA Junior Nationals. It’s the biggest wrestling tournament in the U-S and a prime opportunity to emphasize safety within the sport.
Some of the country’s top wrestlers are giving it all they’ve got inside the Fargodome, but it’s the warm weather outside that is a hot topic of conversation.
Today we sit one week out before the Vikings will practice for the first time at training camp.
NDSU and UND are two weeks away, with high school football practice right after that.
I've had a countdown ticking away the days to start of the season since Memorial Day.
My wife asked me a great question the other day, why I am wishing away summer?
The USA wrestling tournament is seeing record numbers, especially in the women's division which is up over 500 entries. This year's North Dakota girls team is full of newcomers as well as seasoned vets.
An upcoming senior at Sheyenne, Mireya Sanchez, found her first love on the soccer field. Or at least she thought she did.
"I have a little bit of anger issues and I wanted to be more physical," said Sanchez. "I would get yellow cards in soccer games, so I wanted to give wrestling a shot.”
The first of nine NCAA Division I FCS national championships had to start somewhere for North Dakota State. There have been stars over the years. And then there was Scott Stoczynski, a backup defensive lineman who perhaps did more off the field for the first national title in 2011 than on it.
A starter as a junior, he took on a reserve role and helped make his mark as a senior leader.
Sadly, former teammates and coaches are paying tribute to Stoczynski, who died over the weekend in Texas from an automobile accident. Cole Jirik, the president of the Bison Football Players Association, reached out to the family on Sunday on behalf of former players.
The Minnesota Twins head into the All-Star break having lost three of four at home to American League Central rival Chicago, the last an unsightly 11-0 loss Sunday afternoon at Target Field.
Still, it beats last year at this time, when the Twins were more than halfway to a last-place finish. Despite losing seven of their past 10 games, the Twins enter the break in first place, two games ahead of second-place Cleveland and three ahead of the White Sox.
When his season at Iowa Central Community College ended in 2018, Brock Reller was beyond burnt out.
"I really didn't want to play baseball anymore," he said. "I played a little bit, and then they just put me on the bench and I didn't play much anymore."
"It was not a good experience for me, I didn't enjoy it anymore, and just had to get out of there."

The brothers have spent the last six seasons playing together at Enderlin High School, combining for 11 All-Region and All-State honors over the years.
Now, they'll have two final games together before heading their separate ways when seniors from Class B square off against those from Class A in the North Dakota Lions All-Star Basketball Games on Monday, July 11 in Bismarck and Tuesday, July 12 in Fargo.
North Dakota State has found its quarterback recruit for the Class of 2023. And they found it in one of the most unlikely places the Bison have ever recruited.
Jamestown (NY)'s Trey Drake announced his commitment to NDSU on Twitter Sunday afternoon.
"Ultimately for me it was the coaching staff, they blew me out of the water. The tradition of pride and excellence is insane. I've been following NDSU football for a while, I knew it was a place I wanted to be." Drake said.
It's the weekend of the NHL Draft and several teenagers across the country lives are about to change. For Fargo native and future UND forward, Ben Strinden, it’s his final shot at getting his name called.
"I never expected to be talking to NHL teams," said Ben Strinden.
It all started when he was lacing up the skates for Fargo South-Shanley. Now Ben Strinden is prepping for his third and final NHL draft.
Fargo-Moorhead this season has found a way to score late to win ball games. That was not the case Wednesday as four Winnipeg relievers shut down the RedHawks offense down the stretch and the Goldeyes came away with a 5-3 win before 2,732 at Newman Outdoor Field.
Winnipeg starter Alex Manasa went five innings, allowing three runs on six hits. The Goldeyes turned the game over to four relievers — winner Bryan Blanton, Travis Seabrooke, Erasmo Pinales and Tasker Strobel — who all pitched an inning and limited the RedHawks to one hit. Strobel pitched the ninth for the save.
After coming to an unexpected pause last week, the Red River Pilots season will not restart as the Expedition League is wrapping up its season early. The summer collegiate wood-bat league will play its championship series this week, which is nearly a month earlier than expected.
This news comes less than a week after Red River Pilots players and its head coach Matty Holem left Grand Forks midseason, citing player concerns and poor management. Since then a second team, North Iowa, ended its season early as well.
North Dakota State landed Lemont (Ill.) High School’s Noah Taylor, a defensive prospect with position versatility.
The 6-foot-1, 205-pound Taylor verbally committed to NDSU for football Monday, July 4, and projects to play either safety or linebacker for the Bison, he said.
NDSU offered Taylor a couple days ago after he attended a three-day camp in Fargo.
“I absolutely loved it there,” Taylor said. “I was able to stay on campus so I experienced all of it. All the coaches were very cool with me. … I’m excited to be a Bison and join the community.”
For the third straight year, local legion baseball teams came together to play the game they love in honor of Jim Pettersen, Fargo Post 2's longtime chairman who passed away in 2020 from COVID-19.

Sonny Gray let himself feel the full range of emotions on Monday. He let those emotions fuel him and then funneled them into one of his best starts of the season. And afterwards, he had a long embrace in the first base dugout with pitching coach Wes Johnson, a man whom he has become close to over the course of the past few months.
A day after news broke that Johnson would be leaving to take the pitching coach job at Louisiana State University, Gray went out and pitched the Twins to an 11-1 win with seven scoreless innings against the Guardians at Progressive Field on Monday night.

When the heat of the summer rises, Fargo Post 2 usually does as well.
Post 2 has won 16 of its first 18 games to begin 2022, scoring five or more runs in 14 of those games.
Most high school kids are getting to go on vacation when the summer arrives. For Legion baseball players like those with Post 2, getting on the field is their vacation.
NDSU Football's 2023 recruiting class is rapidly rising as the Bison picked up two new commits on Wednesday.
The day started with Jailen Duffie's commitment, a cornerback out of Illinois.
The cornerback had offers from 19 division one programs, including FBS and the top schools in the Missouri Valley Football Conference.
Bismarck native and former NDSU quarterback Carson Wentz returned to Fargo Tuesday along with some of the most recognizable names in Bison football for the third-annual AO1 Foundation charity softball game at Newman Outdoor Field
Festivities included a home run derby, and the main event: a nine-inning softball game that pitted team offense against team defense, all to benefit the various ministries of Wentz's foundation.
Shelby Frank is no stranger to making history.
"We know what I was able to do and I know that I wasn't gonna settle for anything less than what I was capable of.
“The discus has always been my baby.”
Beginning in 8th grade, Frank won four consecutive state titles in the discus at Red River High School. Frank's success at the high school level landed her in the Big 10 at the University of Minnesota.
Detroit Lakes (Minn.) High School rising junior Mason Carrier got his dream NCAA Division I college football offer in early June and it didn’t take long for him to make his decision.

Moorhead was well aware its margin for error was razor-thin against top-seed Benilde-St. Margaret’s in the Minnesota state boys lacrosse quarterfinals on Tuesday.
The defending state champion Red Knights entered with a 16-0 record, averaging almost 15 goals per game. It’s pretty much the same outfit that soundly defeated the Spuds in last year’s quarterfinals.
It didn’t take long for Moorhead to learn that there are, indeed, margins thinner than a razor.
Fifteen years ago Roseau native Nick Oliver and Grafton’s Chad Demers paved the way in the first ever season for the Fargo Force. Now these former teammates are reunited again in a way they never thought would happen.
Life is coming at Karter Menz pretty fast these days.
"I always wanted to play college football but I never imagined I could go that high. The last few months I started to believe that I could." Menz said.
What's happened over the last few months?
Nearly every big-name Division I football school in the Midwest has contacted Menz, from North Dakota State to Minnesota to Nebraska.
It was heartbreak in the matter of less than a second.
Moorhead senior hurdler John Jenkins was confident he'd be able to punch a state ticket in the Section 8AAA Track and Field Championships. He was competing in the 110 meter and 300 meter hurdle races.
He finished third in both by a combined .06 seconds.
Those were his two main races, but he still had one more event left. Jenkins was going to run the anchor leg for the 4x400 meter relay team.
The Moorhead Spuds are heading back to the Minnesota boy’s Class A, Section 8 finals.
The Spuds boys lacrosse team defeated Elk River 10-4 in a section semifinal on Tuesday, June 7, at Jim Gotta Stadium.

Before Tuesday’s game, Spuds head coach Andrew Law said that winning faceoffs was the key to winning the game, and he was enthused that his team came through on his hopes.
North Dakota State track has grown accustomed to sending athletes to the NCAA Championships and coming home with hardware.
Starting with Laura Hermanson in 2009 to Akealy Moton last year, the Bison have racked up All-American honors.
This year though, they will make history with perhaps the most unlikely entrant to the championships.
At long last, the Twins have reached their much-needed off day.
But instead of stumbling into it, as you could imagine a team whose depth has been stretched thin and was playing in its 18th game in 17 days might, the Twins finished the run with an 8-6 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays on Sunday afternoon at the Rogers Centre.
They finished the 17 days by taking two of three games from a good Toronto team after dropping four of five games in Detroit, their offense silenced in the middle of that series.
Experience in the state tournament helped Lamoure-Litchville-Marion defeat Surrey 11-1 in the 2022 ND Class B State Tournament on Thursday.
L-L-M head coach Derold Haugen said having been through the tournament grind before helped his team prepare for this year’s tournament.
“We have been here before,” Haugen said, “We kind of know that we got to do the little things, play good defense, and get good pitching. We did that and eventually we got the bats.”
They waited 363 days for a little redemption, but the wait was worth it.
The Kindred boys golf team rolled to another Class B boys golf state championship on Wednesday, going +69 for the tournament. Oak Grove and Central Cass finished in a tie for second at +112.

Weah lead the Fighting Hawks with 129 carries for 818 rushing yards last season. UND will play the Bears on Oct. 1.
Sunday morning, the Twins had two healthy shortstops on their roster. There was the present star, Carlos Correa, and the future, Royce Lewis, whom the Twins also hope turns into a star.
By Monday afternoon, they had none.
Lewis, who was recalled on Sunday from Triple-A, ran into the outfield wall making a play in center field hours later and suffered what the Twins are calling a bone bruise in his right knee, which landed him on the injured list. Things went from bad to worse on Monday for the Twins when Correa tested positive for COVID-19, something which manager Rocco Baldelli found out about during the Twins’ 7-5 loss to the Tigers on Monday afternoon at Comerica Park.
It is already time to start handing out state championship trophies in North Dakota.
The 2022 State Track and Field meet kicked off on Thursday in Bismarck. 13 individual champions were crowned on day one of the meet.

Trey Lance had something to say to his critics, and he did so with a soft touch.
How does he feel about the offseason conversation swirling around him, some of it negative, after his up-and-down rookie season? The San Francisco 49ers' 22-year-old quarterback smiled. And he launched into an answer that was pointed and polite.
"In the most respectful way possible — it doesn't change how I feel about you guys as people — but it's not my job to care what you guys say or anyone else on social media," Lance said. "For me, I care about what the guys in the locker room think and what my coaching staff thinks. And at the end of that, that's my job.
Down 3-0 after three innings, the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks needed to pull off a home opener comeback.
They did just that. The RedHawks scored the game's final four runs, including a ninth-inning RBI single from Manny Boscan to walk-off Milwaukee, 4-3.
Fargo-Moorhead scored two runs in the eighth inning to tie it up before putting runners on the corners in the ninth with just one out. Boscan then put a fly ball into right field that landed for the game-winning hit.
"T.O.’s (NDSU head baseball coach, Tyler Oakes) has been preaching the whole season about being gritty and taking the adversity with us, and it’s been working in our favor,” said senior catcher Logan Williams.
This season, the odds were stacked against NDSU baseball.
Tyler Oakes began his first season as head coach for the Bison. The team lost eight seniors, five of which were position player starters, and 40 of 47 games were played on the road.
After ending the first round of the 2022 PGA Championship tied for second at 4-under par, Fargo's Tom Hoge seemed to see the bottom fall out of his tournament chances the next day with a 4-over par round that dropped him into a tie for 23rd.
But the player known to have a lot of North Dakota grit to his game shook it off and climbed back up the leaderboard over the weekend's final 36 holes, any tournament's toughest stretch.
Chuck Roos had never heard of a marathon before 1980. Now, the 76-year-old runner, who has run in every Fargo Marathon since its inception, will run in memory of his son Kyle, who died in 2020 from COVID-19.
Quincy Patterson will have one more chance to play quarterback at the FBS level.
The former North Dakota State quarterback told ESPN on Wednesday night he is transferring to Temple. Patterson started seven games for the Bison, winning each of those games before Cam Miller took over in the third quarter of NDSU's game against Missouri State.
Patterson tallied six passing touchdowns, seven rushing scores, along with four interceptions.
Gannon Limke said he's always wanted to play college basketball at North Dakota State, so he did something about it. He called head coach Dave Richman.
"I reached out to coach Richman and told him it was my lifelong dream to play for the Bison. I felt like I had a chance to play there," Limke said. "He gave me the opportunity to be a walk-on and join the program."
Fargo Marathon week kicked off today with the Fargo Cyclothon.
Hundreds of people gathered outside the north side Buffalo Wild Wings for the 26.2 mile race. The course included a loop of Fargo North, Harwood and Moorhead.

The 6-foot-2, 215-pound defensive defenseman played 97 games at Union, tallying one goal and five points. Sidorski was fourth on Union in ice time last season, playing an average of 17 minutes, 55 seconds per game.

Despite some incredible play from Kaprizov, especially in the opening 20 minutes, the Wild suffered a 5-2 loss to the Blues in Game 5 . They now trail 3-2 in the best-of-seven series and will be on the brink of elimination heading back to St. Louis for Game 6.
Quincy Patterson II's time at North Dakota State is over.
Two sources confirmed to WDAY Sports that the dual-threat quarterback entered the NCAA transfer portal Monday morning.
The 6-foot-3, 242-pound Patterson originally came to NDSU as a transfer from Virginia Tech, a Division I FBS program where he spent the first three years of his collegiate career.
On nine separate occasions this season, the Wild erased a multi goal deficit, and parlayed into a comeback win. That impressive total tied them with the Florida Panthers for the most in the league.
Thus, with the Wild giving the St. Louis Blues everything they could handle down the stretch in Game 4 of their playoff series, it felt like only a matter of time before they leveled the score.
It was one of those moments, of when you know, you just know.
“That’s really all you can say is, wow that’s awesome,” said 15-year-old Sam Laurila.
When Laurila laced up his first pair of hockey skates, there was no surprise that the game just came easy to him.
“I think just with my dad playing growing up, he just brought me to the rink and I started skating around and I just liked it ever since. I think it clicked right away, it stuck with me my whole life. I like it, I love it, actually,” said Sam.
All the Minnesota Wild needed was a break to get back in the series with the St. Louis Blues.
They got it in Game 2 on Wednesday night at the Xcel Energy Center. Literally.
With the Wild struggling to get anything going nearly 10 minutes into the contest, Blues defenseman Robert Bortuzzo broke his stick in the defensive zone. As a result, the puck squirted away from Bortuzzo, and landed right in front of Jordan Greenway.
That proved to be just the break the Wild needed. A few seconds after Greenway scooped up the loose puck, Joel Eriksson uncorked a shot that beat Blues goaltender Ville Husso clean.
After 37 games on the road, NDSU baseball cruises to a 10-0 win over Mayville State in home opener.
Druw Sackett set the tone early for NDSU hitting a home run in the third inning, sparking a four run inning for the Bison.
NDSU will go back on the road to Miami for its series this weekend.
Four days after parting ways with Scott Langer, the Fargo Force hired Nick Oliver as head coach.
Oliver spent the last four seasons as an assistant coach for St. Cloud State men's hockey. During his time as assistant coach, he helped lead the Huskies to a NCHC regular season championship and a Frozen Four appearance.
Life has come full circle for Oliver, as he played for the Force from 2009 to 2011.
Wild winger Marcus Foligno toppled to the ice after absorbing a nasty knee-on-knee hit in the regular-season finale against the Colorado Avalanche. He stayed down for more than a minute writhing in pain. He staggered to his skates and needed to be helped down the tunnel.
In that moment, it looked like Foligno’s postseason might be over before it even got started. Yet there he was on Sunday morning at Xcel Energy Center, skating around with his teammates on the eve of Game 1 against the St. Louis Blues.
How the heck did Foligno recover so quickly?
Kwesi Adofo-Mensah had indicated he was not opposed to trading down in the NFL Draft in the right situation.
That situation came about on Thursday night. Minnesota traded the 12th overall pick to Detroit along with pick number 46, in exchange for picks number 32, 34, and 66.
With that 32nd pick, Minnesota elected to draft for defense, selecting Georgia safety Lewis Cine.
For every highlight reel and game changing play that Christian Watson has made for North Dakota State, it reminds a certain generation of fans of one player.
Stacy Robinson.
Robinson was a part of the first NDSU dynasty in the early 80's . He racked up 16 hundred yards and 13 touchdowns in his time in Fargo, part of an offense that ran the ball 90 percent of the time.
Karl-Anthony Towns buried a triple with 9 minutes, 30 seconds left to play Tuesday to put Minnesota up 13 points. He turned, put his finger to his mouth and shushed the Memphis crowd as the Timberwolves went back to their bench for a timeout.
In that moment, Minnesota seemed destined to score another road upset and claim a 3-2 series lead, with a chance to clinch advancement on its home court. But this team never makes life that easy on itself.
“Eighteen-year-old Cordell would have no idea what's in front of him. That's for sure,” said former North Dakota State offensive lineman Cordell Volson
Volson is from Balfour, North Dakota. A town of 27 people.
“I played nine man football," said Volson. "You know, I was actually probably more of a basketball player in high school. I guess it all paid off, right?”
Six years later, offensive lineman had appeared in an NDSU record 65 games. During his time as a Bison, Volson was a three-time FCS All American and was part of four national championships.
Spring football practice is usually the chance to learn how a new team works and thrives with each other.
At MSUM, there's a strong connection forming this year with a town nearly 100 miles west on I-94; a connection that's growing by the year.
The Minnesota Timberwolves spent 2½ quarters Thursday showing the type of team they can be.
Unfortunately for Minnesota, the rest of the game revealed the truth of who it appears to be — one not capable of putting it all together for a long enough period of time.
Despite building two separate leads of 25-plus points — one in each half — Minnesota disappeared in the final frame, falling 104-95 to Memphis. The Grizzlies now lead the best-of-7 series 2-1, with Game 4 set for Saturday night at Target Center.
As the losses have started to pile up in the early parts of the Twins’ season — many a result of the slumping offense —Twins manager Rocco Baldelli has often praised the approach and the at-bats, even if the results haven’t followed.
Not on Wednesday.
The Twins went quickly — they lost in less than two and a half hours — and quietly on Wednesday night, blanked by the Royals 2-0 at Kauffman Stadium. It marked the third time the Twins have been shut out in their last seven games.
Malik Beasley spoke Monday about Minnesota aiming to get a second road win in Game 2 on Tuesday so it wouldn’t have to return to Memphis after potentially sweeping the Grizzlies.
That was the type of confidence Minnesota carried into Tuesday after winning Game 1 in such convincing fashion over the weekend. After a regular season split in which Minnesota gave a game away late, it was easy for the Wolves to convince themselves they were in fact the better team in this matchup and could impose their will on a nightly basis.
Spring practices are all about finding who will be the next player to step up in the big moments. On offense for the Bison, Zach Mathis and Braylon Henderson work to pick up where All-American wide receiver Christian Watson left off.
"I think the wide receiver room’s really good," said head coach Matt Entz. "Braylon Henderson, we're counting on or leaning on to step up. Zach Mathis is healthy right now so we're seeing him do some things out there."
ST. PAUL — It wasn’t the way the Wild would have drawn it up, but they’ll take it.
What appeared early to be a runaway victory over a second-division club playing out the string became a dogfight that the Wild were fortunate to send into overtime. That one point officially clinched Minnesota’s 2022 postseason berth, but the Wild needed another to stay within spitting distance of St. Louis for home ice in the first round of the playoffs.
Kevin Fiala tied the game 4-4 when Jordie Benn’s one-timer hit him at the crease and deflected past Sharks goaltender James Reimer with 11 minutes remaining in regulation, then scored the overtime winner on a wrist shot from between the circles as the Wild rallied for a 5-4 victory and two important points in front of 19,029 at Xcel Energy Center.
FARGO — Lewis Walker and Matt Entz were no strangers to each other. The two coaches had previously been connected through former North Dakota State offensive line coach AJ Blazek.
Walker and Entz had talked for more than four years, with the potential of working together on the table.
In February, the right scenario finally played out when Entz hired Walker onto his defensive staff as cornerbacks coach, a spot that was left open when defensive ends coach Buddha Williams took a job at Colorado State.
Lance Waddles' 1,146 mile journey to Fargo will be plenty worth it.
The most recent signee for North Dakota State men's basketball knows plenty about North Dakota. Waddles was born in Bismarck, and has family who still live in the state.
His family moved to Louisiana when he was a young child, but when Bison head coach David Richman offered him a scholarship, he made up his mind quickly.
"Coach Richman finally pulled the trigger, and that's really where I wanted to come, come back home," Waddles said. "Finally get to be around my family a lot more, because I'm separated from them when I'm down here most of the time."
The University of North Dakota men's basketball is getting yet another Bismarck prospect. Century junior Ryan Erikson, who was offered by Paul Sather over the weekend, announced he's committing to the Fighting Hawks.
NDSU spring football is in full swing. While plenty of new faces have emerged, there’s also plenty of local talent that have caught the coaches' eyes, like Fargo South’s Enock Sibomana.
While he’s been making moves on the field, his motivation to play football is bigger than just the game. It’s his family.
Tom Hoge's wish for better weather and playing conditions in his first Masters tournament came true on Sunday. For the most part, he took advantage.
But the 32-year-old pro from Fargo was unable to complete his first sub-par round at Augusta National Golf Club, closing with a bogey at No. 17 and a double bogey at No. 18. His 1-over 73 matched his best round of the tournament and he finished at 7-over 295.
AUGUSTA, Ga. — Tom Hoge's first-ever competitive round at The Masters on Thursday probably wasn't exactly what he was hoping for, but it also wasn't the opening day disaster that befell several of the PGA Tour's big names.
The Fargo pro shot a 1-over 73 and he is among 12 golfers tied for 31st place after the tournament's first day at Augusta National Golf Course.
GRAND FORKS — Ty Farmer is returning to North Dakota to finish out his college career.
The former Fargo Force and University of Massachusetts defenseman is transferring to the University of North Dakota for his fifth year.
Life has not been the same since Tom Hoge made a birdie putt at the 17th hole at Pebble Beach Golf Course.
That putt changed the Fargo native's life. Hoge went on to win at Pebble Beach, securing his first PGA Tour win and a trip to the Masters and Augusta National.
FARGO — Steve Kennedy has seen plenty in his golf coaching career.
From leading North Dakota State to a Summit League championship to a dozen state titles with the Fargo South Bruins, his golf resume is loaded.
As a golf fan, however, Kennedy had one experience he wanted for decades: a trip to the Masters. A trip that seemed unlikely.
"I've tried to get tickets year in and year out. They're just so hard to come by," Kennedy said.
That is until one of his former stars gave him a surprise he never saw coming.
News leaked Sunday that Murray State has been voted into the MVFC.
An official announcement will come Monday, but a full explanation of how the move came to pass won't likely be forthcoming, Mike McFeely writes: https://www.inforum.com/sports/bison-media-zone/mens-sports/mcfeely-blog-why-did-valley-add-murray-state-good-question-cant-wait-to-hear-the-answer-why

Former Grand Forks Central standout Luke Kanta announced that he has committed to play hockey at Army. Kanta helped the Knights to three state championships and is a two-time all-state selection.

Last year North Dakota entered the NCAA men's hockey tournament as the top overall seed, but fell in the second round to Duluth in a five overtime game.
After losing several seniors, newer faces took on the ice this season leading the team to a 24-13-1 record. Heading into this year's tournament, UND is the second seed in the East Regional in Albany.
In its return to the state tournament, Perham boys basketball fought but couldn't overcome second seed Caledonia in the Minnesota AA Boys Basketball State Tournament, falling 51-40.
The No. 3-ranked and seeded Wayzata Trojans opened the state tournament with a dominant 71-28 victory over unseeded Moorhead on Tuesday at Target Center.
After falling in the section 8AAA championship game in 2021, the Moorhead Spuds boys basketball team was determined to get back to the same stage.
“We have a lot of good puzzle pieces. It was just trying to figure out how to use it," head coach Matt Ellingson said.
The Spuds enter this tournament unseeded and have a tough test going up against the defending state champs, Wazayta.
UND is headed back to New York's capital city for the first time in 21 years and it will take on Notre Dame in the first round of the NCAA tournament.
The Fighting Hawks (24-13-1) and Fighting Irish will play at 5 p.m. Central on Thursday. The regional's top seed, MSU-Mankato, will take on ECAC playoff champion Harvard at 11 a.m. Thursday.
For the first time since 2012, the Moorhead Spuds are state tournament bound after defeating Brainerd 53-52.
In a back and forth game, Mekhi Elmore made the game winning free throw with seven seconds left to put the Spuds up by one.

It was a day filled with action in Minnesota, as the quarterfinal rounds of the State High School League state girls basketball tournaments began Mar. 16.
In Class AAA, Detroit Lakes fell to the No. 3 seed Totino-Grace 64-43. Totino-Grace's Hannah Herzig and Abby Lord proved to be a dynamic duo for the Eagle, combining for 29 points in the first half.
In Class AA, No. 2 seeded Fergus Falls propelled to a 71-55 win over Pequot Lakes. Ellie Colbeck paced all players with 25 points, following close behind was teammate Tori Ratz with 22.
While the Minnesota State High School League state girls basketball tournaments begin this week, the boys are setting up their section finals.
In 8AA, Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton got 34 points from Owen Leach to cruise to a 76-65 win over Thief River Falls. The Rebels will play Perham on Friday night, who beat Pelican Rapids 43-37 to advance.
It's been ten years since the Moorhead boys basketball team felt the joy of playing in a state tournament. Matt Ellingson, a senior guard on that 2012 Spud team, remembers it well.
"I will always remember that feeling when the buzzer went off, and you knew you punched your ticket to the state tournament," he said. "There's nothing better." Watch: https://www.inforum.com/sports/watch-ellingson-trying-to-return-spuds-to-state-nissley-commits-to-nebraska-in-wdays-10-pm-sports

Enderlin is making its first region title appearance since 2015 and will be looking to make its first state appearance since 1996.
On the other hand, Kindred is one win away from returning to the state tournament, where it will look to defend it's state title.

Sam Griesel poured in 26 points to lead the No. 2-seeded Bison to a 92-72 victory against Oral Roberts on Monday, March 7, in the tournament semifinals at the Denny Sanford Premier Center before 10,418 fans.
On Sunday, Mar. 6, the North Dakota State women's basketball team fell in their Summit League tournament quarterfinal game against Kansas City 81-74, bringing to an end what head coach Jory Collins called a "tough year."

Minnesota State Moorhead now has a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference men's basketball tournament crown, and the sixth time proved to be the charm.
Jaden Stanley-Williams scored 15 points to help lift the Dragons to an 81-73 victory against No. 12-ranked Minnesota Duluth for the conference tournament title Tuesday at the Sanford Pentagon.
“That we’re able to do this for the first time in school history, it means so much because this is a great program we have," said Dragons freshman guard Jacob Beeninga. "It’s a great school, great support. This is a university-wide championship. This is amazing.”

The top-seeded Spuds powered in five third-period goals and routed the Warriors 7-0 in the Section 8AA quarterfinals at the Moorhead Sports Center.
Davies girls hockey is in the middle of a remarkable three year run, with no signs of slowing down heading into the North Dakota state hockey tournament.
It took South-Shanley a couple chances, but it finally got a win over Davies it desperately wanted. The Bruins scored the first three goals of the EDC championship game to cruise to a region title, 3-1.
Moorhead already has an adapted bowling team and is heavily involved in Special Olympics. When adapted hockey was put on the table though, Heidi Fisher knew that this had to be brought to reality.

From Dom Izzo: NDSU is 19-8 on the season, won eight of its last nine games and are battling for a top two seed. They are honoring three of the best players in school history and yet outside of those that really care about Bison basketball, there is no buzz around this team.
It was well-earned Super Bowl experience for Scott Verkuilen, who battled and beat Lymphoma in late 2019 then used a wish from the Make-A-Wish Foundation to give back to his school, donating equipment for a brand new weight room.
During winning and losing streaks, after comeback victories and embarrassing defeats, the Rams opined that they were authoring their own story, and they intended to finish with a flourish.
On Sunday, in Super Bowl LVI they penned the final chapter. And it was a pulsating finish.
The Bison men survived a 16-point comeback from Western Illinois and outlasted the Leathernecks in two overtimes, 84-81. Sam Griesel led NDSU's efforts with 23 points. In Fargo, the Bison women got off to a disastrous start, led a furious rally, only to end in calamity.
Britta Curl, the former Blizzard standout, tested positive for COVID-19 while still in Los Angeles waiting to fly to China. She will not make the trip after being named an injury replacement for the United States women's hockey team.
The No. 8 Central Cass boys basketball team used a big second half to storm back and win 69-60, handing No. 2 Kindred its largest loss of the season and first since December.
This game was tied at 32 to start the second half, but Carter Vrchota led all players with 26 points, which included six three-pointers. Cole Holzer chipped in another 21 points for the Squirrels, while Riley Sunram led the Vikings with 14 points and 10 rebounds.
Seemingly done from any chance of victory, the Bison suddenly found life in the last seven minutes in one of the more crazy finishes in the short life of the Scheels Center at Sanford Health Athletic Complex. Sam Griesel’s shot from in close with three seconds left gave NDSU a 76-74 Summit League men’s basketball win over the University of South Dakota.
A stellar run in the final holes helped Fargo's Tom Hoge to victory in the Pebble Beach Pro-Am on Sunday. Hoge finished with three birdies in the final five holes Sunday, Feb. 6, to overcome Jordan Spieth's two-shot lead down the stretch and give Hoge his first career PGA victory.
Tom Hoge's first round of the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am might be his best opening round of his career. He put up a nine-under 63, including six straight birdies on his final nine holes.
The Vikings have reportedly narrowed down its head coach search to Los Angeles Rams offensive coordinator, Kevin O'Connell, currently the Rams' offensive coordinator.
The No. 1 Kindred girls basketball team used a big first half to earn some redemption on its regional rival with a 70-56 victory in front of a rambunctious Central Cass gymnasium.
Five days separated both games for North Dakota men's basketball against South Dakota State. The second time around went much better than the first, but ended in UND's eleventh straight loss, 70-64.
The Los Angeles Rams and the Cincinnati Bengals will each advance to Super Bowl LVI after exciting wins Sunday, Jan. 30.
It looked like North Dakota State men's basketball had lost another close game in Summit League play. A replay showed otherwise. The Bison capitalized on an extra five minutes, outscoring South Dakota 14-2 in overtime for a 74-62 win.
Dom Izzo gives kudos to the NDHSAA for fixing one wrong with high school football. But there's another problem out there looming, he says.
The Bison were a machine to close the first half and went on to a 77-56 Summit League men’s basketball win over St. Thomas in the first game between the two programs since the 1966-67 season.
Enderlin head boys basketball coach Calvin Kraft knew a win over Central Cass wouldn’t come easy. "We knew it was gonna be a battle,” Kraft said. “It was gonna be a full house here at Central Cass. They were ranked high and undefeated.”
Hudson Swafford went eagle-birdie at the 16th and 17th holes to cap a busy final round and win The American Express on Sunday in La Quinta, Calif., beating Fargo's Tom Hoge by two shots.
The North Dakota State men's and women's basketball teams both looked destined for victories Tuesday night. Both let wins slip away in the fourth quarter.
There was a time when D1 recruiters would ignore North Dakota high school basketball, saying the competition level just wasn't good enough. That time is over, Dom Izzo says.
Carson Triggs' goal midway through the third period stood as the game-winner as Moorhead defeated Fargo Davies 5-4 in the Spuds' matchup with North Dakota's third-ranked team on Tuesday at Scheels Arena.
Monday night brought together a top 10 battle in Class B, No. 2 Kindred hosting No. 7 Edgeley-Kulm-Montpelier in a rematch of last year's state championship.
The Bison will get a boost from players coming back on offense and defense that are using an extra year of eligibility because of Covid. That will make NDSU a lock to be the favorites to win another title in 2022.
Summit League play continues to be a struggle for the North Dakota State women, who were outscored 17-6 in the game's final five minutes en route to a 73-62 loss In their first conference matchup against St. Thomas.
Mason Klabo took little time to make his presence known in the EDC. The Davies point guard started playing meaningful minutes as an eighth grader, and his freshman season is more than following up. Klabo leads the EDC in scoring average, assists and steals per game.
On Tuesday night the Krier brothers, Carter and Colby, got an opportunity to sit and chat in an empty rink. There was plenty of trash talk. It was a special moment considering the two were just hours away from being opponents. Carter is an assistant coach for East Grand Forks, while Colby suits up as a junior defenseman for Moorhead.
North Dakota State built a 21-point lead by halftime and cruised to an 87-69 Summit League win over Denver on Monday night.
NDSU's Rocky Kreuser had a big night, finishing with 24 points and nine rebounds.
This time, the Minnesota Vikings didn’t blow a lead. They made a comeback. But it was too late for Mike Zimmer. The 31-17 victory Sunday over Chicago at U.S. Bank Stadium was his final game as Minnesota’s coach.
Emily Dietz had a historical night inside the SHAC, becoming the 35th Bison player to reach 1000 career points as the NDSU women's basketball team pulled away with a 74-68 win over Denver.
NDSU greats such as Carson Wentz, Jabril Cox and Dillon Radunz are just a few players that have participated in the Reese's Senior Bowl. The Bison added another to that list after Christian Watson accepted an invitation.
The Spuds hockey team is finding their stride, skating to a 10-0 win over Brainerd to notch their fifth consecutive win.
The Vikings (7-9) were eliminated from playoff contention with their ugly 37-10 loss at Green Bay on Sunday night, and there is much speculation about whether head coach Mike Zimmer will be back in 2022 for a ninth season.
Asked if he has talked to management about his future, Zimmer said, “No, I have not talked to any of them.”
He then was asked why he believes he would be the right man for the job moving forward. "That’s not for me to judge,” Zimmer said.
Former Bison QB Trey Lance put in a solid day's work and propelled the San Francisco 49ers to a 23-7 win over the Texans. How his impressive showing impacts San Francisco's QB situation is anyone's guess.
North Dakota State men's basketball canceled Saturday's game against South Dakota due to COVID-19 protocols within USD's program. The virus has hit the Summit League hard this week, canceling seven games so far, including all of UND's home games.
Meanwhile, the IIFH has canceled the remainder of the 2022 World Juniors Championship hockey due to rising number of COVID-19 cases among players.
John Madden, the beefy, exuberant Super Bowl-winning coach of the Oakland Raiders who became one of America's best-known TV sports announcers and lent his name to a wildly successful football video game franchise, died on Tuesday at age 85, the National Football League said.
We're looking back at our July story about West Fargo baseball star Matt Strahm and his baseball card obsession.
"Baseball cards are something my brother and I grew up collecting and then we kinda got into Pokemon a little bit and then back to baseball," Strahm said.
Despite Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford throwing three interceptions, two to linebacker Anthony Barr inside the Rams’ 15-yard line, the Rams held on for a 30-23 victory over Minnesota on Sunday at U.S. Bank Stadium.
Conference openers already carry a lot of weight in college basketball. Adding in rivalries to the mix raises the stakes just a little more.
On Wednesday night, North Dakota State took the first victories in the grudge games against North Dakota, the men winning 86-76, while the women prevailed 67-61.
The Moorhead boys hockey team’s first win over a Section 8AA opponent this season didn’t come easy. The Spuds played through bumps, bruises and a cold bug as they muscled out a 5-4 win over St. Michael-Albertville on Tuesday at Moorhead Sports Center.
The Chicago Bears lost a lot of players before Monday night’s game. Then they lost their cool. Several key penalties by the depleted Bears and other mistakes helped the Vikings overcome a lackluster showing in a 17-9 victory at Soldier Field.
Seldom do childhood dreams become reality. Jaksen Panzer’s dream is coming true at the rink.
“I mean growing up, I just wanted to play hockey. I didn’t think of anything more than that, not committing or playing juniors. It was mostly just play hockey and have fun. It just works out sometimes,” said Panzer.
It’s almost like Jaksen was destined to be a star on the ice.
The Grand Forks Central and Grand Forks Red River boys hockey teams met for the first time this season Thursday night, and the two programs wasted no time turning in a classic rivalry matchup.
Signing day with the North Dakota State football program on Wednesday included the usual assortment of linemen with growth potential, athletes with Division I FCS promise and local players hoping to make an impact.
When James Madison University rolls into Fargo for the FCS semifinal game Friday, Dec. 17, it'll be their last matchup against the Bison before next year's transition to the FBS.
Sam Griesel came back to the lineup last week. On Monday night, the North Dakota State senior guard really came back.
The Bison are a different team with their leader on the floor and never was that more evident than in a 77-70 victory over Indiana State before an energetic crowd at Scheels Center at Sanford Health Athletic Complex. Griesel, getting calculated rest breaks from head coach Dave Richman, helped rally the Bison from an 11-point second half deficit with 25 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists.
No matter the sport, when Red River and Central go head to head emotions are high. This Grand Forks rivalry though, isn’t always heated. Seniors Paine Parks and Sam Strandell are both starters in basketball, they’re also all-state football players. Despite lining up on opposite ends, their friendship dates back nearly a decade.
NDSU fell on the road to powerhouse Arizona 59-47. During the first few minutes of the game, Bismarck's Lauren Ware fell to the ground with a right knee injury and never returned to the game. Arizona's head coach Adia Barnes said Ware will be out for a week or two.
As of Wednesday, Dec. 8, thousands of tickets were still available for NDSU's game Saturday in the quarterfinals with East Tennessee State. Dom Izzo says fans are getting bored with just having a winning team, and he has some ideas to get them back to the Fargodome.
With the victory, the Rams (4-1) snapped the Spuds' (2-3) two-game win streak and earned some revenge against the team who ended their season in the Section 8AA final for the second consecutive season this past spring.
The East Tennessee State University Buccaneers have notched a number of close-but-big wins this season, including a near-miraculous come-from-behind victory to advance to the FCS quarterfinals, where they will face the North Dakota State Bison for the first time ever.
What appeared to be Roger Maris' last best chance to get into the National Baseball Hall of Fame was instead a major disappointment.
Fargo's favorite athlete, who set the single-season record with 61 home runs in 1961 when he played for the New York Yankees, failed to collect a single vote from the 16 members of the Golden Era Committee.
North Dakota State hung with Creighton for the better part of the first half but the Bluejays roughed up the Bison after the break and won 80-55 on Tuesday night at the CHI Health Center Omaha.
Kansas State used a 28-10 run to open up a 20 point lead on the Bison over the span of a quarter and never looked back, winning 78-57. NDSU, which trailed 16-5 after the first quarter, trimmed the lead down to one point before giving up the long run to go into the break down 12.
The Vikings managed just 67 yards rushing in a 34-26 loss to the 49ers and star running back Dalvin Cook left the game with a shoulder injury late in the third quarter. Cook, who was taken off while sitting up on a cart, carried 10 times for just 39 yards.
North Dakota State finished the regular season with a 10-1 record and won the Missouri Valley Football Conference championship to earn an automatic bid the the Division I FCS playoffs.
The semifinal round is set in the Class A and B state volleyball tournament. West Fargo and Shanley the two eastern teams advancing on after Shanley swept Bismarck Legacy in straight sets tonight. Fargo Davies with a tough task against defending champion Bismarck Century.
Barnesville senior running back Cameron Heng shows toughness on the field, rushing for more than 1,000 yards on a Trojan team known for running the football.
That strength runs in his family. Heng's 23-year old sister, Ashlin, has Rett Syndrome, a neurological disorder that causes severe seizures. Heng and his family pull together for her care, and she's his biggest fan.
NDSU men's basketball took on PAC-12's Arizona and the Dragons opened with a big win at home.
An 0-2 start was staring the University of North Dakota men's basketball team right in the face midway through the second half against Montana on Tuesday night. Caleb Nero wouldn't let it happen.
Nero scored six of the last seven points for the Fighting Hawks, including the game-winner for UND to complete a comeback win over Montana, 79-77.
