In this episode, Dr. John and Mark define forgiveness and discuss some myths related to why we choose not to forgive. John walks through three dimensions of forgiving: relinquishment, reconciliation, and restoration. To relinquish is vertical, meaning it is between you and God. Reconciliation and restoration are horizontal and are between people needing forgiveness and those who need to forgive.

Practical Steps for relinquishment of wrongs:

  1. Prayerfully list those you have not fully forgiven (Psalm 139:23-24).
  2. Name by name, recognize the incidents or categories that should be relinquished.
  3. Face the pain involved.
  4. Entrust each case to God, knowing He has seen it and will judge righteously (Psalm 55:22, Romans 12:19).
  5. Release any rights to revenge (Romans 12:17-21).
  6. Accept any inevitable consequence of the wrongs (James 1:2-3).
  7. Be willing to reconcile (Matthew 5:23-24; 18:15-17).
  8. Accept God's compensating grace, which is sufficient (2 Corinthians 12:9).
  9. Document this process and declare it "done" if the enemy brings it to mind again (James 4:7).

In this episode, Dr. John and Mark define faith and discuss how Christ is the object of our faith. Faith is believing in what you cannot see but it's also believing in what God hasn't done yet! Jesus was amazed twice and both involved faith. Once he was amazed at the Centurion's faith and the other was the lack of faith from the people in his hometown. The Bible says we are to live by faith, so how do we grow our faith? Dr. John mentions four ways. 1. Discover what God has revealed. 2. Choose to agree with God. 3. Confess God's revealed truth. 4. Live in the light of faith.

C.S. Lewis in The Problem of Pain, "God whispers to us in our pleasure, speaks in our conscience, but shouts in our pain: it is His megaphone to rouse a deaf world."

It is hard to trust and fully surrender to God if we have a distorted view of Him. In this episode, John and Mark discuss the concept of God as Father. As Father, our life is in Him and He is both our protector and our provision. When we see God as "Abba," then we will not run from but to Him. As Father, God no longer deals with us as enemies, but as children. We can approach Him with boldness and in full assurance of faith. We see in our Father a tough love but love that's also tender.

Can we find answers in psychology? Should we use psychology in Christianity? John and Mark discuss the value of observable psychology. Understanding the context of rejection and identity helps to see why we function the way we do. For a more in-depth understanding of identity and rejection, listen to episodes 27 and 28. The guys discuss integration and how labels are needed for insurance but can become a "sentence" for people. Labels are descriptive and not our identity. John states that labels are not psychological tattoos. GFI focuses on going beyond coping to the cure. Observable psychology gives us context but Christ is the answer!

In this episode, John and Mark discuss how the Exchanged Life is both a positional and conditional truth. They both align together. Our position is we are righteous and in Christ. This is a positional and spiritual truth. Our condition is our daily life, these are distinct but interrelated. In the Book of Ephesians chapters 1-3 describe our position and then chapters 4-6 to our condition. Knowing your position in Christ gives you the power to be obedient. Mark speaks of praying specifically to God and making the proper withdrawals. Dr. John describes the difference between "Relationship and Fellowship." Our relationship with Christ is secure but our fellowship can fluctuate. For example, we can quench the Holy Spirit but not lose our position. The guys discuss how many attempt to secure their relationship with God through fellowship but there is no checklist to be right with God. Dr. John encouraged the listeners to memorize Ephesians 2:10, "For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them."

Have you ever had a mountain top experience and the bottom seems to fall out? When these "downers" occur we seem to wonder if the victory we had was real and lasting. We wonder, "What am I missing?" You are not abnormal and these moments do not mean you didn't "get it." The first step of a downer is subtle. In this episode, Dr. John and Mark discuss the steps and dangers of a downer and how to get back up! John discusses how a downer isn't the same as Bipolar and how victory is a person, not a program. The guys discuss how the blood of Jesus covers what we do and the cross covers what we are. Even amid a downer, we are still in Christ. The Victor is in us! No matter what, we must maintain hope and set our minds to the fact that He will fulfill His purpose in and through us.

In this episode, Dr. John and Mark interview Cherri, a Guide Counselor and Life Coach with GFI. Cherri shares how her great-grandfather started "Whosoever Gospel Mission" in Philadelphia in 1892. In 1897, he started the Colony of Mercy, which is one of the oldest Christian addiction ministries in America and the world. In 1924, he launched America"s Keswick in New Jersey. Cherri's family has been involved in the ministry but she shares how she had a distorted identity. She felt like she had not done enough or was not good enough for God to love her. She states her life was all about do, do, do, and she struggled to see how God could accept her. She says, "I thought God was on the throne with His arms crossed just shaking His head at me." Cherri describes the difference between guilt and shame. Cherri has 5 kids and 2 of them struggled with addiction. This led her to start "Love Them to Life" in 2013. Cherri has authored 2 books. The first, "Beside Still Waters" was birthed from the need for curriculum. "Set Free" is a deeper work designed for education and hope. Cherri ends hoping all who listen will accept their acceptance. When you do, she says, the shackles begin to fall off. "It is Jesus living in me, through me, and as me!"

In this episode, John and Mark unpack the opening lines of the podcast intro. We discuss what is eternal life, what it means that we are born in the line of Adam, and what it means that we are new creations in Christ. To illustrate, we discuss a diagram called the "Line Diagram." Here are links to download the GFI App, which contains the diagram:

App Store link: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/id6446342103Here is Google Play Store link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.subsplashconsulting.s_S8HP79

Being "in Christ" is the key. Because Christ is our Lord and Savior, He offers to us His life as our life. Who you were in Adam, was canceled on the cross. Episodes 6-9 are good reminders to relisten to what we mean when we say that you are crucified with Christ, buried with Him, and resurrected. In Christ, we have a new past, a promising future, and a powerful present. Your past no longer identifies you and if we identify with our hangups, then we live in defeat. In Christ, we share His victory. Dr. Solomon states, "We must become in experience, who we already are in position." Episode 16 will review the difference between surrender and passivity. Our responsibility is divine cooperation, not self-effort. Do not miss Dr. John's pun at the end of the podcast!

In this episode, John and Mark interview Laura. She was raised in a Christian home and was born again at the age of 23. Laura was a teacher but had to leave her profession after 4 years because of anxiety. She struggled with suicidal thoughts, and she has been hospitalized in a mental health facility 8 times since 2018. Last year, Laura decided to write a help-self book to figure out how to heal herself. She finished Dr. Solomon's book, "Handbook to Happiness" on Christmas Eve 2023 and decided she could never fix herself. Instead, she learned, she has died to herself and now lives in Christ! She states, "I'm not the sum of my problems or what's been done to me." We hope you enjoy her story of victory and transformation.

In 2019, 301 million people struggled with anxiety worldwide, 58 million being kids and teenagers. We live in troubled times and in this episode, Mark and John discuss the difference between normal anxiety and anxiety disorders. In the Bible, both Jacob (Genesis 32) and Esther (Esther 4) battled anxiety. Mark and John dive into Philippians 4:6 and answer questions regarding the cause and effects of anxiety. Anxiety doesn't define nor disqualify you. Our hope is not in the absence of our troubles but in Christ who is in us. If we worry about tomorrow, then we will not enjoy today. Mark and John discuss waiting, and how God uses these times of "wait" to grow our faith. Holy Spirit gives peace for the place but in the wait, we must have faith!

Over 6.8 million people suffer from depression. However, only 1/3rd of people get help to find peace and victory. In an article from 2010, over 11 billion dollars was spent on anti-depressant medications. In this episode, John and Mark discuss the causes of depression and misconceptions regarding depression. We need to understand the causes of rejection as well as see God's remedy is biblical and effective. "Hope means the most when it comes stumbling out of the dark places." Christ, the cross, and grace are powerful to save and help heal the soul's depression. John and Mark discuss how spiritual warfare can play a part in depression. Warning...suicide is discussed toward the end of the podcast. Mark gives a warning before the discussion begins. Biblical examples of depression are discussed and hope is given to all who may suffer. There can be a difference between what we know and what we trust. God is good but do we trust God's heart even if we do not understand His hand? In this episode, Dr. John and Mark answer, "Why does a God of love allow suffering?" Knowing Christ as Life helps us to take doctrine to experience and theology to a testimony. The guys speak to 4 words: 1. Know the truth. The old man, who you were in Adam before salvation, was crucified. This truth is not a hope but an already accomplished fact. 2. Reckon on the truth. The word, "reckon," is an accounting term that means to add up the facts and to count something to be personally true. It is a step of faith. Reckon 6:11 is the first commandment in the Boof of Romans. As believers, we are appropriate Christ as life. The question is, "Have we trusted what we say we know?" Watchman Nee said, "I cannot do something if it has already happened." 3. Yield to the truth. We are commanded to present/offer ourselves to Christ for Him to live in and through me. Jesus himself modeled this when he said, "I can of Myself do nothing (John 5:30)." The power of surrender is Holy Spirit in us. God wants your body to be His instrument. Christ in you can do everything greater, better, bigger, and more powerful! 4. Walk in the truth. Walking is an idiom for practical Christian living. We walk, not in our strength, but through Holy Spirit's power, we participate with Christ. The focus of our walk is Christ in you!

We all want a "why" when things happen. We love the phrase, "God will not put more on me than I can handle?" However, maybe he will help you discover a different functional source of living. We tend to view trials in life as either a lack of faith or something we have done wrong. Sometimes, trials bring us closer to Christ and they also are proof that our self-sufficiency isn't sufficient. In this episode, John and Mark define providential pressure and discuss a GFI talk called, "Crowded to Christ." Links and books mentioned will be added below. Mark and John discuss how God's grace exceeds your outward pressures. The guys also discuss these providential pressures, which include spiritual standards and life experiences. We see in the story of the prodigal son that his trials crowded him back into a loving and forgiving father. We read how Jonah's trials crowded him to the point of surrendering to God. It may be through the disillusionment of your current life that you come to identification and the real meaning of Galatians 2:20. Jesus Christ wants to be your functional life source, which isn't to ruin you but to empower you. Never forget that the suffering of today is not comparable to the glory that awaits us.

All of us have experienced rejection, which Dr. Solomon describes as the lack of meaning love. All people need to feel secure and significant. Security speaks to who I am and includes the need to feel important, needed, wanted, understood, and missed. Significance speaks to what I do and speaks to the need that what I am doing is needed, that am I making an impact, and does my life have meaning. In this episode, Mark and Dr. John describe the difference between overt and covert rejection. Overt rejection may be abuse or hurtful and negative statements. Covert rejection comes in the forms of the death of a loved one, overprotection, and favoritism of a sibling. Dr. John makes the point that rejection may not be intentional and that children are good observers but not good interpreters. A child may hear he wasn't planned by his parents, but he is in the plan of God. Rejection is a leading cause of rebellion and it affects all relationships. We reject people and often they will reject us back. However, we may reject God but He never rejects us! Mark and John walk through the emotional attitudes and reactions of rejection toward self, toward spouses/children, and God.

Dr. John mentions a website: www.fathersloveletter.com

Dr. John quote, "God knows us best and loves us most."

Finally, we discuss how to overcome rejection, which is acceptance. Ephesians 1:6 states that we are "accepted in the Beloved." We need to accept our acceptance! We are saved and kept by grace and we are accepted by this same grace. God welcomes us and we are not on probation.

Could it be that God is wearing the white shirts with two rust stains to show how creative His kids are?

In season two of the podcast, Mark and John discuss identity. This is such an important question; "Who am I?" In this episode, we discuss the difference between what describes us and what identifies us. So many people are wearing an invisible name tag given to them by someone else. However, our identity flows out of what God says not what we have done or through what others say. Our experiences do not define us and so many people live replaying negative events, which has made them identify as victims. Did you know that 80% of all our self-thoughts are negative? Dr. John states a minus becomes a plus by adding a vertical line! When we live with a biblical identity, these negative thoughts become positive! Again, Mark and John state our identity isn't based on our past, our positions, our popularity, possessions, or potential.

Ephesians 1:1-6 states we are saints, which isn't based on our works but on Christ's finished work on the cross. We are blessed, which means we lack nothing. We are chosen and that means we are a #1 draft pick! God didn't settle for us, He chose us before we did anything good or bad. We are adopted, which means secure and finally, we are accepted. This acceptance isn't based on performance but on grace. Stand up and stand on your true Biblical identity.

Dr. Woodward and Mark discuss how to survive, or better yet, thrive during this holiday season. John and Mark first discuss grief. Some people enter this season with loss. Whether it is the loss of a thing or a person, John discusses how grief is part of the journey, and we need to draw upon grace and not focus only on negatives. We focus on Jesus and those around us. We can have peace and joy during any season or difficulty because Jesus is peace and joy, and He is in us. Next, John and Mark talk about the stress of the holidays. We all have places to go, houses to decorate, and gifts to buy. John discusses how happy things, like cooking Christmas dinner, can still bring us stress. We walk with Christ, not our checklists. Mark states that we do not have to be everything, not buy every gift. They guys discuss self-imposed stress, which is performance-based acceptance. Just because it has always "been done that way before" doesn't mean it has to stay that way. Jesus brings rest, and we are accepted in Him, so we do not have to meet everyone else's expectations. Finally, John and Mark discuss hurt. Some of our rejections are from those we will see during the holiday. Christ meets our needs, and Mark teaches the differences between forgiveness and trust. Forgiveness is immediate, but trust takes time. Mark tells us to begin now surrendering fears, anxiety, and all of the "what if's." Surrendering is not putting our heads in the sand, but allowing God to do through us what we cannot do on our own. Episode 16 teaches on surrender and passivity. Mark and John end the podcast with a prayer.

Did you know that your psychological issues affect your body? Dr. John and Mark discuss how things happening in your body, may actually originate first in the mind and emotions. Our physical health also affects us emotionally. Sleep is a great example; when we do not get enough sleep, it affects us. In this episode, Mark shares his personal story of weight loss and victory. Dr. John teaches about gender identity and also how our identity isn't based on the body or age. 1 Corinthians 6:19 states that the body is a temple of the Holy Spirit. In verse 20, we are commanded to glorify God in our spirit and body. Our bodies belong to God because He purchased us with His blood. So the goal should not be looks or weight, but health. We are to steward our health and God wants to bring healing to you spiritually, emotionally, and physically!

The soul is the seat of our personality; in the soul, we find our mind, will, and emotions. In this episode, John and Mark discuss how the soul functions mentally and emotionally. They ask the question, "What identity do I live from?" Is it self-life or Christ's life? There is abundant life in the spirit but defeat in self. Doubt is a great example; doubt gains traction in the soul even though we have assurance and security in our spirit. John discusses how rejection and disappointments affect the soul with feelings of inferiority, insecurity, and inadequacy. John also discusses the differences between real and imaginary guilt. The common struggles of worry, doubt, and fear are also addressed. The flesh life brings about many psychological symptoms and problems. Mark teaches us the difference between a reaction and a response. He also states that when we are living selfishly, we tend to blow up or clam up. There are so many ways we try to mentally escape but when Christ is life, He can bring mental health. Listen to the end as Dr. John teaches on depression and anxiety and ends with Matthew 11:28-30. Jesus gives rest to our souls because when we are saved, he redeems our spirits!

In this episode, John and Mark give an overview of the diagram and how it speaks to our spirit, soul, and body (1 Thessalonians 5:23). Our spirit speaks to how we relate to God. Our soul is the seat of our mind, will, and emotions; through our soul, we relate to others. Our body is our earth suit and it is how we relate to the world. People often think that they must not be moving forward because they still have struggles. Victory is not the absence of trouble. Victory is a person! Victory is Jesus Christ. If Jesus is our life and Jesus is victory then Christ in us is the victorious life. In this episode, Dr. John and Mark discuss providential pressures and how God uses these trials in our lives to crowd us to the cross. God uses these providential pressures to show us that our self-sufficiency is not sufficient. John and Mark also discuss the fact that believers are not sinless but we can sin less and walk in victory.

In this episode, Dr. John and Mark discuss grace, the law, and holiness. Sometimes people think that if we teach too much grace then people will think they can do whatever they want! However, those who understand their true identity, will not "abuse" grace. These terms are defined and the purpose of each is explained. John and Mark discuss questions like, "If I live under grace, then can I do what I want?" "What is the purpose of the law and should we mix law in with grace?" John and Mark also state that grace cannot be lived apart from holiness. Many of us desire grace but we are not generous with giving grace to others. We teach the theology of grace but do we practically live in grace and holiness? During the conversation, Dr. John defines the difference between punishment and discipline. Mark mentions two books. The first is "Stunned by Grace," written by Frank Friedmann. The second is "Understanding Grace," written by Dr. Lee Turner and this book can be purchased in our online store. Dr. John mentions the book, "Lifetime Guarantee," written by Bill Gilliam. Finally, Dr. John and Mark discuss whether "Exchanged Life" is only a positional truth.

In this episode, John and Mark discuss surrender and passivity. They also discuss how surrendering to Christ doesn't mean we lose our personality. Many times in counseling and coaching, we discuss the necessity of surrender. Surrendering isn't waving a white flag, laying down our "weapons," and giving up. Surrendering is allowing Christ to work in and through me. In this episode, John and Mark also discuss why people have a hard time surrendering to God. John and Mark state that a call to surrender is not a call to passivity. Surrendering is actively depending upon Jesus. Dr. Best said, "Our union with Jesus will not lead to active or passive independence, but rather to a life of dependent activity, laboring while resting in His adequacy." Dr. Solomon adds, "God does not want us to work for Him, to witness for Him, to live for Him, He wants to get self out of the way so He can work through us." In this episode, John and Mark discuss the role of the Bible in counseling. Life transformation occurs not through our intellect but through the Word of God. Unfortunately, many of us go straight to friends or social media for guidance but how different would life be if we went straight to Scripture? The Bible isn't just read for information, but also for transformation. In life and counseling, the Bible should be used in a grace-based way, even in discipline, making it profitable in both life and counseling! The Bible should not be used to only state what we are against, but also in what we have and what we are for! In this episode, John mentions the "Balanced Diet Reading Plan." Dr. John and Mark finish their 4 episode series on what it means that we are crucified, buried, resurrected, and ascended with Christ. Today we discuss what it means that we ascended with Christ. Not many hear this teaching on Sunday, so Mark and John discuss this powerful biblical truth. As believers, we are seated with Christ in the heavenly places (Ephesians 2:26), but what does that mean for us today? We have eternal life in Christ (John 6:47). This eternal life makes possible that we were crucified, buried, and resurrected with Christ. This same eternal life makes it possible that we ascended with Christ. Mark and John share two quotes from Dr. Solomon. 1. "You can hang up your hangs up at the cross and live in heaven on your way to heaven because you are already there." 2. " We are all learning to become in experience who we already are in position." Practically this teaching means that through our co-ascension, we have victory and authority over our spiritual enemy! Sadly however, how many believers are living out of their authority in Christ. Remember, that we are not fighting for victory but from the position of victory. We are currently standing in victory in Christ!

John and Mark are in the second of a 4 episode series discussing the truth that in Christ, we have been crucified, buried, resurrected, and ascended with Christ. In this episode, John and Mark discuss passages that speak to the truth that we, as Christians, have been buried with Christ. What does that mean? How is this practical to our Christian life? We do not overcome sin through our own power and strength. Mark quotes from the book, "Victory in Christ" by Charles Trumbull. John mentions that through our burial we say "goodbye" to self effort. John also quotes from "Our Utmost for His Highest" by Oswald Chambers from January 15th. John speaks of a "White Funeral," which is not gloomy but glorious! What if we buried guilt, fear, or anything that makes us live in defeat? John and Mark mention some tools from GFI and you can obtain these pdf's by emailing GFI at hello@gracefellowshipinternational.com. The life that wins is Christ in us!

John and Mark are starting a new 4-episode series discussing the truth that in Christ, we have been crucified, buried, risen, and ascended with Christ. In this episode, John and Mark discuss passages that speak to the fact that we, as Christians, have been crucified with Christ. What does that mean? How is that possible? How does this apply to our everyday Christian life? Paul teaches that Christ not only died on the cross for us but we died with Him and we are alive in Christ. Christ didn't come to patch-up or polish our old man, He came to die that we might have eternal, abundant, and victorious life in Him. Mark mentions a book by FJ Huegel, called "Bone of My Bone." John and Mark discuss from Huegel's book that in Christ we are dead to sin, we have died to the world, we have died to party spirit, and in Christ we have died to the law.

In episode 5, Mark and Dr. John discuss the emotion of fear, define fear, and speak to the ways fear keep us from doing what God has created us to do.  Fear is a powerful emotion, but all throughout Scripture, we read this phrase, "Fear not."  2 Timothy 1:7 tells us that God hasn't given us a spirit of fear.  Fear comes out of our self-life and fear makes us live in the "what-ifs" of life.  How do we overcome and live courageously?  Dr. Best speaking of renewing our minds, writes, "If our thinking is grounded in truth, our emotions will be appropriate.  If our thinking is grounded in a lie, our emotions will be inappropriate."  To be emotionally healthy, our thinking must be grounded in God's truth.  If Christ is our life, we are no longer controlled by our emotions!  We can live courageously in Christ.  Living courageously doesn't mean living above fear, it means that we do not allow fear to paralyze us.  To access the free resources mentioned, go to www.gracestudyhall.org.

What is Exchanged Life?  Richard Hall defines it as "the exchange (with Christ at the cross) of a self-centered life lived out of the Christian's own resources as if he were still in Adam, for a Christ-centered life lived out of Christ's resources because he is in Christ.  Watchman Nee called this, "the Normal Christian Life."  Dr. John and Mark define the aspects of Exchanged Life, discuss what is "Exchanged," and dive into how this is practical in everyday life.  Because we have been crucified with Christ, buried, and resurrected as new creations, we are to live daily dependent in Christ who dwells within us.  As we trust in Christ, who is our life, we trade our total insufficiency to live the life the New Testament describes for Christ's total sufficiency to live life in and through us.
