I’m an abstract artist and art educator and I’m hellbent on helping my fellow artists redefine their freedom by tapping into their creative spirit. If you want to have a whole lotta fun while you learn about art, creativity, and what it takes to build an art business, you’re in the right place.
If you think you have to perfect your art before you let yourself think about the business side, Jodie has news for you: that belief is not protecting your work, it's stalling it. In this episode, Jodie breaks down her 85% rule, the mindset hack she uses every time perfectionism tries to keep her work off the easel and out of the world.
Jodie shares the story of an artist whose technically flawless painting had nothing left in it because the energy and story got polished away, and the piece of her own early work that's so "cringeworthy" it lives in a closet, but sold anyway. She walks through why art, business, and mindset were never meant to be separate lanes you pick between, and why the artists who build real, sustainable careers work on all three at once.

Jodie just wrapped her fifth year hosting a painting workshop in Citta della Pieve, Italy, and this episode is not the trip recap you expect. It is the story of a wall that could not be cleaned, the artist who painted a mural over it instead, and what five years of doing this keeps teaching Jodie about letting go of control, both on the canvas and off it.
Inside this episode:
• The moment a technically flawless artist finally let go of needing to know where a brushstroke was going
• The story of the paint spill, the mural of poppies, and the career decision that came after it
• Three things Jodie wants every artist to sit with, whether you ever get on a plane or not

Most abstract painters think layering means adding more. More color. More texture. More paint.
But there's a version of layering that suffocates a painting, and a version that gives it real depth. The difference isn't talent. It's intention. And you don't need art school to develop it.
In this episode, Jodie breaks down how five artists used layering in completely different ways, and exactly what you can steal from each of them for your own studio practice today.

Artists don't quit because they lack talent. They quit because somewhere along the way, they lost joy.
In this powerful coaching call, Jodie sits down with Honest Art® Society member Cindy Wysocki to talk about consistency, creativity, healing, and the emotional journey of becoming an artist later in life.
Cindy shares how she rediscovered painting during a difficult season of life after years of believing she "wasn't artistic enough." As a myofascial release therapist, she also explains the fascinating connection between emotional healing and the creative process.

Your paintings might not be boring because you lack skill. They might be boring because you're overworking them.
In this episode, Jodie dives into a totally different way of thinking about composition. This isn't another lesson about the rule of thirds or focal points. This is about what happens when artists become so focused on balance, beauty, and "doing it right" that they accidentally suck the life out of their work.
You'll learn why:

If your paintings feel flat or chaotic, your colors might be the problem, and the fix is messier than you think.
Let's talk about the thing most artists try to avoid at all costs …. Muddy color.
In this episode, I'm breaking down why that "ugly" mix on your palette is actually the secret to creating rich, cohesive, fine art. Because when everything is bright and saturated, your painting has nowhere to go.
I used to think I was ruining my work every time my colors got muddy. Turns out, I was missing the magic.
Today I'm going to show you how to use complementary colors to create depth, contrast, and those gorgeous neutral tones that make your art feel elevated and intentional.

22 years as an artist taught me this: what you stop doing matters just as much as what you start.
There is no shortcut to building a sustainable art career.
What looks like success on the outside is usually built on years of mistakes, lessons, and showing up when it's hard.
In this episode, I'm sharing the things I will NEVER do again after more than two decades as an artist.
And trust me, I've done them all.
I'm talking about beliefs and habits that keep artists stuck. Things that feel safe but that will slow your growth more than anything else.

If you don't have energy, you don't have art. Let's talk about how to stay sharp, creative, and energized as you age.
Here's something most artists don't think about until it's already a problem … Your body is part of your creative process.
If you're exhausted, foggy, and running on empty, it becomes harder to show up, harder to focus, and harder to create consistently.
In this episode, I sit down with Alan Graves to talk about longevity, energy, and how to support your body and brain so you can keep making your best work for years to come.

If your paintings feel flat, it's not your color. It's your values. And this mistake is keeping your art stuck.
Let's have a little heart-to-heart, artist to artist.
If you've ever stood in front of a painting thinking, "Something's off … maybe it's the color," you are not alone. In fact, it's one of the most common traps artists fall into.
But here's the truth most people aren't talking about.
Your brain doesn't even prioritize color first. It prioritizes value, the lightness and darkness of what you're seeing.
So when your entire painting lives in that safe, middle-value zone, it doesn't matter how beautiful your colors are if there's no contrast, no focal point, no visual tension.
In this episode, I break down exactly why this happens and how to fix it fast.

Art pricing isn't just math. It's mindset. Listen to a real coaching session that will help you charge more without spiraling.
In this episode, I'm doing something new. I'm sharing a first of many one-on-one coaching sessions with artists from the Honest Art® Society.
Our first guest is Jennifer Cupp, an artist who started painting at 40 and built a daily studio practice. For years, sales were slow. Then she started doing fairs and everything shifted.
We break down the mindset shift that changes pricing forever: pricing is an internal decision, now an external circumstance. The quality of your work is the quality of your work, no matter the city.
Here's what else we covered in this coaching session:

If you want to sell more art, stop tracking likes and start tracking the leading indicators that actually create consistent sales.
In this episode, I'm breaking down the most important concept artists miss when it comes to growing income: sales are a lagging indicator.
Sales are the harvest. The smoke. The result.
So if you want consistent sales, you have to track the leading indicators, the seeds you're planting that create those results later.
We'll cover metrics across five areas:
Because better art, better marketing, and better sales won't happen without it.
If you've been feeling powerless when sales slow down, this episode will give you your agency back, plus a simple tracking framework that helps you adjust without spiraling.

Finished your painting and wondering, "now what?" These next steps protect it, professionalize it, and help you actually sell it.
So many artists stop at the last brushstroke and miss the steps that turn a finished painting into a sellable asset. In this episode, I break down the exact workflow I use after the painting is dry.
We cover the studio basics, and then move into the part most artists forget about: letting people know the painting exists! Because collectors do not buy from "here's a pretty picture." They buy from a connection. They buy a story. And if you hide your prices or make it confusing to purchase, people will assume they can't afford it and keep scrolling.
Your painting is finished, but your process isn't. Let's do the next right steps so your art can live in the world, not die in a studio corner.

If you are afraid to change your art style because you might lose collectors, this episode will set you free.
After 22 years as a professional artist, I have evolved through more styles than I can count. From sassy word paintings to farm animals to mixed media to abstract expressionism, every shift came with fear.
What if they leave?
What if I lose momentum?
What if I ruin my brand?
Here is the truth. Changing your style is not betrayal. Staying stuck is.
When artists cling to a style just because it sells, they start to resent their work. Curiosity fades. Experimentation stops. The creative fire dims. And eventually, the business plateaus, too.
In this episode, I share how to evolve your art style without losing your audience and why your voice matters more than your visual language.
You will learn:
Why your style is not your identity.
How to bring collectors along in the process
The one mindset shift that keeps your brand from going stagnant
Collectors are not just buying your art. They are buying your courage, your voice, and your evolution.
If you're feeling the itch to experiment, this is your permission slip.

If you love making art, but worry that building an art career will burn you out, this episode is for you.
Hustle culture is built on productivity and output, but artists don't thrive that way. Creativity needs openness, joy, and space. When you're depleted, you start avoiding the studio, your work feels flat, and you begin doubting yourself.
In Episode 141, Jodie breaks down how to design your art career around your real energy levels, not hustle culture. You'll learn how to find your creative rhythms, how to match tasks to high, medium, and low energy, and how time blocking can protect your creativity and help you sustain the long game.
Jodie also talks about why scarcity drains artists fast, and how multiple streams can create peace, reduce desperation, and make your work braver. And she calls out the boundary issues that deplete artists the most, including people pleasing, undercharging, and discounting from insecurity.

If you want to sell more art, you may need to hire freelancers before you feel ready.
Trying to do everything yourself might feel responsible, but it's often the fastest way to burn out and stall your sales. Hiring doesn't have to be a full-time team or a huge commitment. Strategic, part-time help frees you up to make the art and respond to buyers consistently.

Starting a painting is the hardest part. It can feel overwhelming, especially after time away from your studio. In this episode, I'll take you inside my art studio and share exactly how I start a painting when inspiration feels far away.
You'll learn why meditation is part of my creative process, how choosing fewer colors can unlock more freedom, and why every painting goes through the fugly stages. I'll break down the six phases of the creative process and show you how to move through the fog instead of quitting.
This episode is a permission slip to start messy, play again, and trust yourself.

In this episode, we dive deep into the licensing world. The truth, the myths, the mistakes, the contracts, the payouts, and the timelines no one tells you about. Cat explains how to pitch manufacturers, how to know if your art is licensable, how royalties work, and how to protect yourself legally so you never end up with a sad little 76-cent royalty check.

If you're trying to control your art, you're cutting off the magic.
In this episode of The Honest Art® Podcast, I'm calling out the sneaky habit that keeps artists stuck … being too attached to the end result.
When you start painting already knowing how it should look, you stop creating and start performing. You shut down spontaneity, intuition, and the wild, beautiful chaos that makes Honest Art® come alive.
In this episode, I'm breaking down:
This is your permission slip to paint like a kindergartener again … curious, bold, and totally free.

I lost hundreds of followers when I posted this painting. Here's why I'd do it again … and why controversy can be powerful.
In this raw episode of the Honest Art® Podcast, I share the story of my most controversial painting: what inspired it, why it pissed people off, and how it ultimately deepened my commitment to creating honest, authentic work.
Yes, I got hateful comments. Yes, I felt nervous. And yes, I lost followers. But I also gained something much bigger: freedom, connection, and collectors who actually value what I stand for.
In this episode, you'll learn:
Because at the end of the day, art isn't about keeping everyone comfortable. It's about telling the truth.

Scared of "being cringe" on social media? Here's how to sell art on Instagram and attract real collectors.
Most artists avoid Instagram because they're afraid of being seen, of bragging, or of looking silly. But that fear is keeping your art hidden from the very people who want to buy it.
In this episode of the Honest Art® Podcast, I break down how to sell art on Instagram without feeling fake, forced, or like you have to learn a TikTok dance.
You'll learn:
Your art deserves to be seen. Instagram is the free, powerful tool that makes it possible. It's time to bloom.

Copying your reference photos line-for-line is boring AF. Here’s how to use them without losing your voice.
Many artists start with reference photos because that’s what we were taught: paint the flower yellow, the grass green, the cow black and white. And while that’s fine for learning, it’s a fast track to creating lifeless art that looks like everyone else’s.
The truth is, reference photos are meant to be a starting point, not a destination. If you copy them exactly, you erase the most important part of your art … your unique voice.
In this episode of the Honest Art ® Podcast, I break down how to break free from perfectionism and start using reference photos in a way that fuels your creativity instead of smothering it.

I didn’t go to art school, and I learned a LOT the hard way. When I picked up a paintbrush at 35, I had no training, no YouTube tutorials, and no clue what I was doing. Which meant I learned everything through trial, error, and a mountain of fugly canvases.
In this episode of the Honest Art® Podcast, I share the 7 lessons I wish I had known sooner. The ones that would have saved me years of struggle and helped me create stronger work right from the beginning.
If you’ve ever felt frustrated by your paintings, this episode will help you move past the struggle and into the flow … much faster than I did.

Got a graveyard of abandoned canvases in your art studio? You’re not alone. Every artist has a pile of half-finished or fugly paintings collecting dust. But here’s the good news: they’re not failures. They’re opportunities.

From painting over them to cutting them into journals or even burning them in a ritual of release … you’ll never look at abandoned work the same way again.

Think you need a perfect website to sell your art? Total BS. Here’s what actually matters (and what to skip).
I’ve worked with countless artists who sold plenty before ever hitting “publish” on a site. But if you do have a website, you'd better make sure it’s not silently sabotaging your sales.

If all you can say about your art is how you made it, you’re missing the point. Process isn’t connection. And connection is everything.
Too many artists default to the “recipe list” when asked about their work. “I used bright colors, layered some texture, tried a new medium …” That’s safe. That’s surface-level. That’s BORING.
In today’s episode, I’m calling out the truth: “good enough” art is dead art. Social media pressures, perfectionism, and fear of vulnerability can sneak in and steal the soul from our work. And when that happens, collectors don’t connect, communities don’t resonate, and even we as artists stop feeling excited about our creations.
The good news? You can bring the magic back and connect to your art again.

Are you censoring your art to please others, or shrinking your voice because you think you're “not enough”? In this episode of the Honest Art Podcast, I’m calling B.S. and challenging artists to stop watering down their authentic identity — those messy, “too much” parts. Why? As a professional artist for over 21 years, I get it – you want that loose, expressive style, but your paintings end up feeling stiff. I’ll let you in on a little secret…you’re trying too hard to get that effortless look.
What’s going to help you loosen up? Speed painting!
I learned about the power of speed painting almost by accident when an art consultant took the "unfinished" energetic pieces over my polished work. The process taught me a valuable lesson about play and having FUN with your art — crucial pieces to the process of making honest art®.
Speed painting may flip your creative process on its head…but your art will be better for it!

It took me years to find my artistic voice and achieve success, but I know it would have taken me a whole lot longer if I hadn’t invested in mentorship.
In this episode, I’m talking about why this level of support is critical to helping artists make their fine art fine.
If you’re skeptical about mentorship and community, listen in. If you’ve been mulling over the idea of mentorship and community, listen in, too! We artists NEED support — and a mentor can be the one to do it.

When starting out, many artists (myself included), struggle to understand how to elevate their work. They often wonder if they need to add more or change their style to make something beautiful happen.
However, the secret isn’t in adding MORE, but in utilizing LESS. We’re talking about negative space! But it’s not a dirty word — it just means the empty space surrounding the subject of an artwork. And it’s crucial for creating focus, depth, and complexity in your art.
If you feel like your work is missing something, negative space may be the most POSITIVE step you have taken yet.

Many artists wonder how to be more free with their art, but the answer isn't a single step — it’s a way of life. When you are free, you start listening to your intuition and discover your own unique style.
That freedom helps you to create art that is honest, raw, and connects with others. Your art becomes more than just a pretty picture; it becomes an expression of your true self.
It’s time to let go, to ditch the self-editing, and fear of being judged. It’s time to rebel — and this episode will give you a few great places to start!

Are brand photos great for an artist? You bet. Don't believe me? I've brought on my own brand photographer, Alicia Leigh Rios, to help me out!

I used to think that because I was introverted, there was no reason to have an art community. I already had the support of friends and family — wasn’t that enough?
The truth is, it wasn’t. Because of us artists? We NEED people who innately understand the creative process and can provide us with constructive feedback to improve our work. We aren’t meant to do this alone.
In this episode, I’ll share more about how joining an art community helped me, and how it can also help you overcome creative ruts and take advantage of new opportunities to propel your career forward.

I probably don’t have to tell you this, but…social media isn’t giving you the full story.
It’s really easy to play the comparison game when you see people (successfully) selling their art online. I’m guilty of it, too.
The truth is, most artists don’t JUST sell on social media. More than likely, they’re using multiple channels to show their work to potential buyers. It’s never JUST about posting a picture of your work and watching the bids roll in.
So, what about you? Are you relying solely on social media to sell your work? Well, then…it’s time to shake it up! Tune in to get a few different ideas for diversifying your artist's income.

Being an artist is vulnerable work. Slinging paint away in the studio for hours on end, trying to pull what’s in your mind out onto the canvas… It can become heavy after a while.
That’s why we need a community of fellow artists to support us, which is part of why I created my Studio Elite artist mastermind. We aren’t meant to walk this artist’s path alone. Wondering how an artist mastermind could change your approach to your art (or your art biz)? Not sure a mastermind is right for you? Listen to what current Studio Elite members have to say about the community they’ve built and what else they’ve taken away from the program. Size matters…with your art.
So many artists think that just because they have a little skin in the game, they also need to size up their work. But that’s not true AT ALL.
Size doesn’t necessarily equate to success. In fact, there’s a lot to consider before you start creating bigger pieces of work, and it may not be right for you depending on what kind of business you want to run.

On this episode, I’m challenging the notion that, in order to be happy, we have to have the things we want. Instead, what if we focused on being the person who made those things possible?
As artists, we’re so often holding ourselves back from happiness because we don’t “have” our goals yet. We don’t have a gallery show, we don’t have collectors, we don’t have a daily creative practice. The reality is, though, that we have to work on ourselves to make sure we’re the person who can make those goals a reality.
We can’t find satisfaction with our art (or our lives!) until we settle the score with ourselves. We have to BE the person who can achieve those goals we set for ourselves.
Not sure what I mean or how you can flip the script from “having” to “being”? That’s what we cover in this episode, along with challenging your goals (why have you set them?) and figuring out WHO you need to be to attain those goals.

What does it mean when a piece of art “has it”? When you hear people say, “I get it”? To someone who doesn’t understand abstract art, it can feel like everyone else is speaking a language you don’t — but I’m here to break down what makes abstract art great.
The truth is, abstract art is about so much more than technique and skill. They’re important, sure, but there’s something much greater at play. It all comes down to doing the inside work before you get to work on the canvas. It’s about sharing the message that only you can share!
That’s what can make abstract art speak directly to people — even when there’s nothing “physical” represented on the canvas.

What do you think makes your work unique as an artist? Is it the style you paint in, like abstract work or oil pastel paintings? Or is it something much deeper than that?

Rejection: What can we learn from it?
THAT is the question we need to be asking, not “How can I avoid rejection?” Because we can’t — failure and rejection are just parts of life. It’s also a part of your journey as an artist.
Rejection doesn’t mean you suck. Hell, even the greats faced failure and rejection. Any time you fall down, it simply means you’re showing the eff up (and learning along the way). But to reap all the benefits and lessons that come from experiencing rejection, you have to first shift your mindset.
Failure can easily knock us down, but it’s how we get up that counts. And in this episode, I’ll show you a few ways to do that (as someone who has experienced rejection many, many times).

Ever heard the saying, “Hard work beats talent when talent fails to work hard?” As an artist, you might not think about your art as “hard work” — but it is. And hard work requires showing up consistently.
If you want to improve your skills and create your best art, if you want to take things to that next level, you HAVE to be consistent. You have to actively face down creative blocks and challenges that try to prevent you from picking up that brush, pen, clay, what have you.
And in this episode of the show, I’m talking about 5 massive creative challenges I think every artist faces, and how you can overcome them.

We’re going to be talking about something pretty taboo, so buckle up!
Disclaimer: My only goal with the Honest Art Podcast is to help artists excavate their own authentic art and freedom through creativity. Never to judge, never to be the boss of YOUR life.
And sometimes, that means exploring topics that are a little more “taboo.” Because that y’all, is what makes honest art!
Which brings us to a question so many in the art world want answered: What happens to honest art when we add certain…substances (wink wink)…to the mix? Can substances really help us be more creative?

Forget the rules! … except maybe these ones.
Art is deeply personal and I love seeing the expression that comes alive when we, as artists, let go of our inhibitions.
But when it comes to composition? Those are rules I can get behind. Because sometimes those rules are the very thing we need to turn our art in the right direction when we feeling it going off the rails.

What’s on the other side of your comfort zone? Life-changing experiences, that’s what.
And on this episode of the Honest Art Podcast, Ana Stapleton and I really dig into why artists NEED to look for ways to break free from our norms and find new opportunities to grow.
Because it’s in those moments that we inevitably have experiences that shape who we are, not only as people but as artists. And when we step out of our comfort zone? We can create our best, most honest art yet.

What’s the one thing you need to create your best art — and sell more of it? Believe it or not, it’s not the most advanced art techniques or a business school degree. It’s… a spiritual practice. Can music boost creativity? Absolutely! Can it help us as artists make our best, most honest art? Eh…not so fast.
I’m a HUGE music lover, but I have guidelines I like to abide by when adding music to the creative process.
No, it’s not about pressing play on one genre over the other. It’s about making sure your music is in alignment with your mood. You can’t bypass the emotional process (aka putting on happy music when you’re in a funk) if you want to make your most honest work.
So in this episode, we’re taking a deeper look into WHY music helps us create, and how to use music (and dancing!) to create our best art yet.

There is one software/tool, however, that stands above the crowd. It’s the ONE thing I can’t live without in my art biz. Why? Because it makes it easy for us artists to track our artwork, showcase our portfolios, and grow our business.
What am I talking about? Artwork Archive!

What’s better as an artist; positive feedback or criticism? BOTH! You need positive feedback to feel supported and find the motivation to continue on with your work. But you also need “negative” (aka constructive) criticism to learn how to grow as an artist.
But that doesn’t mean it doesn’t hurt! After all, you pour your heart and soul into your work. You can’t help but feel that type of critique is personal, right?
That’s why in this episode, I’m going to talk about how we can learn to embrace seemingly “negative” feedback, how to hold onto positive feedback, and why you should hold neither in too high of regard!

What would it look like if you had the freedom to express your creativity in the most authentic way possible? No restraints, no “should do’s,” no frameworks. Just pure, honest art.
In this week’s episode of the Honest Art Podcast, fellow Artist Nichole Washington and I sit down to discuss just that!
Nichole has had an amazing career, and I’m truly inspired by her work and her spirit. Her work embodies female strength, identity, and spirituality, and inspires other artists to live as their most authentic selves — no matter what anyone else has to say about it!
We talk all about why it’s so important to leave the idea of “being artsy” behind, and define what making art means to YOU.
In this episode, we talk about:

Art school doesn’t teach you everything. I guess that’s true of any education — real-life experience will always win out over textbook learnin’. But if you want to grow an art biz, art school doesn’t really teach you how to do that.
As an entrepreneur with years of experience running businesses before I picked up a paintbrush, I’ve learned a thing (or 47) about what it takes to sell your art for a living. Now, I want to share 10 things that art school grads might want to know about owning an art biz.
In this episode, I talk about how to:
If you want to learn more about the business side of owning an art biz (because yes, it IS important!) check out Art Biz for Rebels: https://www.jodiekingart.com/artbizforrebels. Most artists will tell you how much they dislike social media, but it’s actually one of the most underrated tools in the art biz world. If you’re looking to get more eyes on your art and sell it to more people (whether that be individual collectors or galleries), you need to be online!
In this episode, I will cover how to sell more art with social media — and how to do it without feeling like you’re selling your soul by being too “salesy”.
In this video, I talk about:

I’m over the starving artist trope, and so is my first-ever guest, Julie Torres! Julie is a fine artist who works with print medium and woven screen print. You may have seen her famous Ruth Bader Ginsburg (RBG) series, or some of her other work in places like the Delta Sky Club or the Chicago Tribune Tower.

We all know art is FUN, but did you know it can also be therapeutic?
In this episode, I’m covering how art can help you move stress, whether that’s the day-to-day kind or something a little deeper, through your body to start healing and bring a daily dose of calm and clarity.
We’ll also talk about:
I’ll also give you some of my favorite ways to break down the barriers and just start creating art that heals, whether you’re totally new at this or a seasoned pro.

Do you have what it takes to become an artist?
Almost 20 years ago, I didn’t think I did. I didn’t go to art school, and I didn’t even start painting until I was 35. Even after years of selling my work in stores, I still couldn’t bring myself to brand myself as an artist.
And now? I own a 6-figure art biz, I get to do what I love every day, and I get to teach other people how to do it. It just goes to show you that it’s never too late to start showing up to do the work that YOU love.
If you want to hear my story about how I broke into the art world with absolutely ZERO idea of what I was doing, tune in.
