Memorial Day is a day to memorialize veterans who have fallen in service of the US. We give lots of "Thoughts and Prayers" on that day, but what do we do to actually help veterans? To use "thank" as a verb and not to use "thank" as a thought.

Troy Peterson—a retired Army veteran and Purple Heart recipient—has been doing that with ValorFit to actually give back to veterans. We talk through his service, what Memorial Day means to him, and what ValorFit stands for.

We took our show on the road! The simple question asked of us was — what do you wish you knew when you were a student that you know now?

To answer that, we went up to Iowa State University and met with some Kinesiology students. We presented some old-man advice and then took outstanding questions from the students about how to be a professional in the fitness space.

Thanks to Deb Power for helping coordinate us being at Iowa State!

Can you lift more than 20 pounds during pregnancy? Should I still run? How soon is too soon to come back? What about my heart rate, should I try and keep that down?

There are a lot of myths around training pre- and post-partum. In this episode, we're joined by Drs. Abbi and Aaron Rickelman of Designed 2 Move Spine and Sport, who are experts in treating movement. Abbi is a certified BirthFit Provider (and mother of 2), so we talked to her about busting some myths in training around pregnancy.

Oh, and by the way, they're on the treatment team of CrossFit Games silver medalist (and open/quarterfinals winner) Mallory O'Brien. So we also got into how to treat injuries for active people and how the average Joes differ from professional athletes.

The Open finished up in March, and the top percent of athletes from the Open advanced to the next stage, which is Quarterfinals. Quarterfinals just finished up in April, so now that those components of the season are over, how did it go? How did new CrossFit Open programmer Adrian Bozman do? How did we as a gym do now that we've had a little space to react?

Goldfinch Athletics Co-Owners Shawn Nuetzman and Jeff Woody give their takes on how both of those phases went and what we can expect with more competition going forward.

Why do you do what you do? The point of fitness is different for everyone. Keystone Church of Ankeny (https://keystonelife.com/) pastor Brent Minter has been doing CrossFit for 10 years now (9 of those with Jeff as a coach between CrossFit Waukee and North Ankeny CrossFit).

In this episode, Jeff and Brent talk about staying motivated in the face of self-doubt, your goals, and why discipline matters (but not so much to beat yourself up over).

Often, people watch competitive CrossFit (The Games, on TV, or at local events) and go, "I could do that, it doesn't look that hard." Some fit people might be able to. But the approach to competitive CrossFit when compared to the approach of working towards general fitness for life is very different.

In this episode of Fitter Every Day, we sit down with multi-time regionals athletes Madi Maines and Amy Boyd to talk about the difference in approaching the open as a competitor vs approaching it like an "average Joe."

When you hear that someone is a dietitian, do you:

1) Know what they do?

2) Feel like they're some kook who is going to take all your food away?

or 3) Even want to talk to them?

In this episode of Fitter Every Day, we meet Jordan Miller, who is the director of Huxley Fit Club, but is also a Registered Dietitian and has her Master's of Professional Practice in Dietetics.

Needless to say, she's a smart cookie about cookies.

Killer clowns, evil worms, and a murderous bike. All par for the course at an event like the CF Circus. Luke and Abi Reiland, the owners of CrossFit 8035, CrossFit 8035 West, and The Circus. The Circus is the biggest CrossFit competition in the Des Moines area, and Luke and Abi are the two who put it together.

They sat down to go over the behind-the-scenes of putting an event like this together, how each event came to be, and what cool stuff they saw on the floor.

So tune in, hold on to your hats, watch out for clowns, and step into the Big Top...if you dare!

Note: There are a few swear words in here, but nothing too serious.

In preparing to record with Amy, we recognized that there is a fine line between trying to broaden your scope and spreading yourself too thin and missing things. One of those things we felt we were missing with growth was the ability to report harassments or traumas that clients may be coming in with.

That's why we have built two forms, one to let us know of things that have affected you in the past, something that we can't know about (and are sensitive to share) like prior traumas or things required in the gym from us.

The other is a harassment form because the gym should be a comfortable place to be yourself, not a place to be on your guard. You'll find the links to those things, as well as resources mentioned in the show, below.

The CrossFit Open is a worldwide competition where everyone on planet earth who does CrossFit does the same workout on the same day to the same standards.

Sound intimidating? Well, what if I told you that your local gym gets together? To make it smaller, you and your closest friends get to do that thing together.

So for some people, it's a silly thing that isn't worth doing. For others, it's too scary. For yet others, it's the best time of the year.

On this episode, we go in-depth on what the Open is, why you should (or shouldn't) do it.

Programming. You hear that word all the time in exercise and fitness circles. But what is it? How does it affect the experience of members? Why is it important to get multiple eyes on it? And how do you shoot for something when you're programming?

Goldfinch Athletics Co-Owners Jeff Woody and Shawn Nuetzman dig into the topic of programming in this episode of Fitter Every Day.

From "I need to get in shape first" to "I don't want to get too bulky," there are things that we hear all the time at the gym. So we put all of those statements in a hat, pulled them out, and reacted to them in the way we normally would in the wild.

New Year's resolutions are great...until they aren't. So many people fail at them because the focus, execution, or both are off track.

Goldfinch Athletics co-owners Shawn Nuetzman and Jeff Woody talk about how they got started in their fitness lives, what they've learned about motivation and consistency, and what keeps someone going at 1 month, 1 year, or 1 decade into a fitness journey. Plus a little talk about how to stick to a resolution (if you made one).

Why would someone start a podcast under a different name than the business that the podcasters work at? And why add another name in the first place? In the last episode of Season #1, we dive into a behind-the-scenes look at why Goldfinch Athletics exists. Many of our early adopters may only know us from inside the walls of the gym(s), and introducing a new brand to it seems confusing and odd. In this episode, co-owners Shawn Nuetzman and Jeff Woody talk about what Goldfinch Athletics is, where it's meant to go, and why it exists in the first place.

Additionally, season 2 starts next week! With season 2 comes videos, sharable clips, better audio quality, featured guests and so much more! Thank you for listening so far, be ready for a wild ride going forward, and we're pumped you're with us!

In any business, a few key things have to happen for a business to be successful. A restaurant needs good food, an accountant needs accurate taxes, and a teacher needs to teach. But beyond those things, there are underlayers of how you do those things. Where if they're done well, it works REALLY well. If they're done poorly, nothing can save it. It's like a lever being pushed up or pulled down, either way, it has an effect.

In gyms—boutique gyms especially—we have those too. They are cleanliness, programming, culture/vibe, equipment, and coaching. Amy Boyd (general manager of North Ankeny CrossFit and all-around badass) and Jeff talk about what goes into them!

No matter where you are in life, there are choices to be made. And there is inevitably the decision to be made between doing the hard, right things and doing the easy, wrong thing. So how do you start to build the capacity to do those hard things.

Jeff is joined today by Goldfinch Athletics team member Isaac Ruiz (a former collegiate wrestler) to talk about how training enables us to do more than we think we can, in and out of the gym.

Officially made it to episode 1 of Fitter Every Day! And, fittingly, if we are going to talk about becoming fitter every day, the natural starting point is to clarify...what is fitness? What is the thing that we are trying to pursue?

Jeff Woody is joined by North Ankeny CrossFit general manager (and all-around badass) Amy Boyd to define what that means.
