70 - Rome and the People of Israel
Today we discuss the historical context of Roman influence in the time when Jesus was crucified. It’s important to note the paradoxical nature of the Roman civilization - their aim was to establish peace, yet they employed force and conquest to achieve it. They installed friendly governments and maintained peace in their conquered lands by ensuring basic necessities for the people but suppressed any form of dissent. This context sets the stage for Jesus’s entry into Jerusalem, often contrasted with Pilate’s entry.
On the day known as Palm Sunday, Jesus enters Jerusalem riding on a donkey through the gate used by the common people. This is seen as a confrontation between the kingdom of man and the kingdom of God. Pilate, the Roman governor, on the other hand, enters through a separate, grander gate, symbolizing the might of the Roman Empire. Pilate’s primary role was to maintain peace and prevent revolts, a task he primarily performed from Herod’s old grounds inside Jerusalem. Jesus had the job to save all humanity from their sins.
Jerusalem itself has a rich history as a religious center and was transformed into a domination system characterized by economic exploitation, political oppression, and religious crackdown. This led to a reputation of oppression for those living outside of Jerusalem. Interestingly, Jesus, during his ministry, spent time in Galilee, outside of Herod’s jurisdiction. This was likely to avoid an immediate crackdown from the authorities in Jerusalem.
The narrative concludes with a reference to a quote from Micah, a prophet in the Hebrew Bible. The quote criticizes the rulers of Jerusalem for their injustice and wrongdoing, painting a picture of the city’s moral decline. This helps us understand the historical and socio-political context in which Jesus began his final week in Jerusalem, setting the stage for his crucifixion.

In this episode, we'll be delving into the extensive history and influence of the Greeks on the land of Israel, setting the stage for the time of Jesus.
The Greeks, who had conquered Israel in 330 BC, brought about a significant cultural shift. As I explored the topic, I found it fascinating how the Jewish people began to appreciate Greek sophistication, philosophies, and language. I was particularly interested in the evolution of the language from Hebrew to Aramaic to Greek, reflecting an increased sophistication needed to capture the depth of Jewish and Christian faith.
The Hellenic influence on different groups, particularly the Sadducees and Pharisees. I was amazed to learn that the Sadducees, being aristocrats, were more Hellenized and sought to align with the Roman upper class. On the other hand, the Pharisees, while also Hellenized to some extent, adhered more strictly to Jewish traditions. However, they were drawn to Greek education and the teacher-student relationship.
As I explored further, I came across the philosophical ideas that infiltrated Jewish land, such as Gnosticism and Stoicism, and the rejection of monotheism by some people in Israel. Despite the Greek era ending with Rome's conquest, Greek philosophy and language had a lasting impact, which is evident in the New Testament. It's fascinating how the Greek influence was still prevalent during Jesus's time.

Today, we’re going to explore the different people groups that existed during the time of Jesus, specifically within Israel.
We’ll focus on the tribe of Judah, which is made up of the descendants of Jacob’s grandchildren from the tribes of Judah and Benjamin. These two tribes were the only ones to survive the exile and were allowed to return home. But what about the other ten tribes of Israel? We’ll discuss their geographical locations and how they eventually disappeared during the Assyrian conquest.
One of the most interesting groups we’ll talk about today is the Samaritans. They were seen as foreigners by Judah, but considered themselves the guardians of the Israeli faith. They even referred to themselves as Israel and believed in their Hebrew roots. Their religious center was Mount Gerizim, which sparked a long-standing debate with the Judeans who believed that the main temple should be in Jerusalem. Unfortunately, this disagreement, combined with historical conflicts, led to a deep distrust and animosity between the two groups during Jesus’ time.

As we go through this journey together, we’ll examine the Pharisees, Sadducees, Sanhedrin, and other groups, understanding their roles and beliefs during the time of Jesus.
The Pharisees were strict about adhering to the laws of the scripture, while the Sadducees were more elite, aristocrats, and well-off who believed only in the Torah. It’s fascinating to learn about how these groups interacted with one another and with Jesus.
We’ll also discuss the Sanhedrin, the Supreme Court of the Jewish Nation at the time, which was appointed mostly by Herod. They formed a crucial part of the judicial system, with representatives for accusation and defense, much like our modern-day court systems. Their main aim was maintaining peace, even if it meant aligning with the Romans. It’s interesting to see how politics played a role in the decisions they made.
The podcast also touches on the roles of priests and scribes. Priests, especially high priests, were responsible for the temple and the religious rites. In this episode, we're diving deep into the life and reign of Herod the Great, an influential figure in the biblical era. You might have heard of him as a crazed, diseased maniac in popular media, but I'm here to tell you that he was actually quite complex. Herod was a shrewd, politically savvy figure who demonstrated great cunning. Despite his ruthless nature, he was also known for his architectural prowess, with many structures still standing in Israel today.
He ordered the Magi to investigate the messiah’s birth and then ordered the death of children to end his life along with the other children. His love, power, and desire to keep the throne were the source of his cruelty.
As we explore Herod's story, I'm struck by his ability to navigate different regimes. He survived and thrived through multiple power shifts, from Julius Caesar to Mark Antony and Cleopatra, and then to Augustus Caesar. He maintained close ties with the Romans, which, although it sparked resentment among some Jewish factions, helped maintain relative peace in the region.
One of the most significant contributions Herod made was to the architectural landscape of the region. He renovated the Jewish temple, a move that was seen as a strategic effort to win the favor of his subjects. He also built impressive structures like the amphitheater in Caesarea and his winter palace in Jericho. Despite being Jewish, Herod understood the importance of appeasing the Romans and Greeks, demonstrating his skillful political maneuvering.
Herod's reign ended with his painful and gruesome death due to a mysterious illness. But his legacy lived on through his children, who also ruled various territories. His life of violence and cruelty that marked his reign is in stark comparison to his impact on the region's history.

We’ll be discussing an amazing book by Father Jonathan Morris called “God Wants You Happy, From Self-Help to God’s Help”. Join me as we explore the concept of God’s desire for our happiness and how it differs from the self-help industry, which often promotes self-reliance rather than reliance on God.
We’ll contemplate being junior partners with God in our lives, acknowledging our weaknesses, and allowing God’s love to lead us. As we delve deeper, we’ll examine the virtues of faith, hope, and love as a means to achieving happiness.
Faith encourages us to focus on God, read the scriptures, and pray regularly. Hope is cultivated through acknowledging our wrongdoings, making amends, and holding ourselves accountable. Love is demonstrated by living a life of love, as Jesus did, and recognizing that we should love others because God loves them.
But the journey towards happiness isn’t always easy. There are potential hindrances, such as pride, vanity, and love of pleasure, that can manifest in our daily lives and impact our relationships. We also consider the external threats that could disrupt our relationship with God, such as failing to pray or taking God’s grace for granted.
That’s why we emphasize the necessity of an action plan to overcome these obstacles and threats. This involves admitting our powerlessness, turning our will over to God, making amends, and following a plan to hold ourselves accountable. We affirm that God wants us to be involved in our plan, using His guidance to navigate life.

It's not enough to simply turn away from sin. We need to trust in God's plan for salvation fully. I highlight the significance of the blood of Christ in redeeming and cleansing believers. As Christians, we face challenges in the world, including the pressures to conform to societal norms and the temptations of the flesh. But when we prioritize the love of God and others over worldly desires, we can overcome these challenges.
Have faith, engage in prayer and Bible study, and rely on the Holy Spirit to guide your life. And don't forget, we have a call to action as believers. We need to be witnesses for Christ and spread the message of God's love and salvation. Living a life centered on God's teachings, guided by faith, and filled with love for God and others is the key to finding true peace.

While politics and science and our own efforts have their place, they are not the ultimate solution to finding peace. Instead, the message of Jesus Christ is presented as the pathway to everlasting peace and a meaningful life.
The uniqueness of each individual and how God reveals Himself to every person in a way that speaks to them personally. But it makes us wonder why there is evil in the world and how it emphasizes the importance of freedom of choice in our relationship with God.
The complexity of God and the role of each part of the Holy Trinity in our Christian walk. We’ll explore how to find peace with God in a world filled with challenges and uncertainties, and the significance of the Bible as a guidepost.

I discovered the power of dangerous prayers through reading "Dangerous Prayer: Because Following Jesus Was Never Meant to Be Safe" by Craig Groeschel. I used to focus on everyday concerns in my prayers, but I realized I needed to go deeper and explore the bold and desperate prayers of people in the Bible.
In this episode, we highlight three specific prayers as examples of dangerous prayers. The first is from Psalm 139, where the psalmist asks God to search their heart, test their thoughts, reveal any offensive ways, and lead them in the way everlasting. The second prayer is from 1 Corinthians 11, where Jesus's command to "do this in remembrance of me" is examined as a call to embrace the radical change and sacrifice symbolized by the breaking of bread. The third prayer comes from Isaiah 6, where Isaiah responds with "Here I am, send me" when God asks who will go as a messenger.
I know it can be scary and uncomfortable to pray dangerously, especially when it requires stepping out of our comfort zone. But, I want to emphasize the transformative power of such prayers, citing examples from the Bible of individuals whose lives were radically changed when they responded to God's call.

In this episode, we'll share examples of people who forgave despite having every reason not to, such as Corrie Ten Boom and Martin Luther King Jr. The challenge is to take the next step of forgiveness and not just forgive someone but pray for them to prosper and find the Lord. Today, we're talking about the radical kind of love that Jesus has for us and how we can have that same kind of love for others. We will discuss the book "Love Does" by Bob Goff. Goff's outlook on Jesus and serving others is so refreshing and inspiring, and I just had to share it with you guys. He emphasizes that love is about doing, not just saying, and I couldn't agree more.
We're all going to be measured by how we love, and Jesus wants us to be bold in our love. He wants us to use our gifts to make the world a better place and to bring others to him. But not as an investment or a number, as a PERSON that Jesus wants back. How powerful is that?
One of my favorite things that Goff talks about is how love assumes that it can find a way to be used, and how love finds a way to do remarkable things. And humility is key to all of this. We need to avoid pride and let God take the credit for the things he does through us.
We need to remember that God's radical love for us is what inspires us to love others in the same way. So, I challenge you to try to do something for someone this week that you might not have done otherwise. I hope you feel inspired to go out and love like Jesus.

And this isn't about following a set of rules or appearances, it's about building a deep, loving relationship with him.

Because, let's face it, grace is found at the feet of Jesus and he is the one who saves us. So, let's commit to being a completely committed follower of Jesus.
