If you've recently realised you're bisexual while in a long-term relationship, one question often comes up:
"Do I have to explore this?"
In this clip, coach and author Rob Brooks Cohen explains why there's no one-size-fits-all answer. For some people, exploration feels important. For others, simply understanding and accepting their sexuality is enough.
The real question isn't what everyone else does, it's what's right for you, your relationship and your values.
Watch the full conversation for a much deeper discussion on bisexuality, mixed-orientation relationships, authenticity and self-acceptance.

How do you know when sexual behaviour has become an addiction rather than a healthy expression of sexuality? Why do some people find pornography or compulsive sexual behaviour so difficult to stop? And what actually helps people recover?
In this conversation, I'm joined by Dr Paula Hall, one of the UK's leading specialists in porn addiction, sex addiction and compulsive sexual behaviour. Drawing on more than 30 years' experience as a psychotherapist, Paula explains why porn addiction develops, the role of attachment and trauma, why shame and secrecy keep people stuck, and the practical, evidence-based approaches that help people recover from porn addiction and rebuild healthy relationships.
We also explore the impact of addiction on partners and relationships, including betrayal trauma, rebuilding trust, therapeutic disclosure, forgiveness and what gives couples the best chance of moving forward together.
Whether you're struggling with pornography or compulsive sexual behaviour yourself, trying to understand a partner's behaviour, rebuilding trust after betrayal, or you're simply interested in the psychology of addiction, relationships and recovery, I hope you'll find this conversation both helpful and thought-provoking.
In this interview we discuss:
⢠Porn addiction and sex addiction
⢠Compulsive sexual behaviour (CSBD)
⢠Healthy sexuality versus addictive behaviour
⢠Why pornography can become addictive
⢠Attachment, trauma and emotional regulation
⢠Shame, secrecy and honesty in recovery
⢠Why the digital world makes pornography harder to escape
⢠Practical strategies to overcome compulsive behaviours
⢠Group therapy and accountability
⢠Betrayal trauma and relationship recovery
⢠How couples rebuild trust after addiction
⢠Therapeutic disclosure versus "full disclosure"
⢠Supporting a partner through addiction recovery
⢠Sexuality, sexual orientation and recovery
⢠Whether abstinence is always the best approach

Tired of the "post and disappear" cycle of traditional social media? I talk in this video about why I think YouTube is the most sustainable way to grow an aligned therapy practice and connect with the right clients.
I share my journey of moving beyond short-form platforms to build a sustainable presence on YouTube, covering the unique benefits for mental health professionals, including:
⢠Why YouTubeās search power (and connection to Google) gives you huge visibility
⢠How long-form content helps clients feel connected before they even meet you
⢠Why YouTube is a slower burn, but far more sustainable than Instagram
⢠How to use YouTube as part of a wider ecosystem (website, directories, podcasts, social media)
⢠The role of AI, search, and community in growing your reach
⢠How YouTube can lead to multiple income streams (clients, talks, mentoring, collaborations)
⢠The personal and professional growth that comes with creating a channel and posting consistently
⢠What I wish Iād known before starting (including unpredictability, consistency, and visibility)
More than half of my clients now come through YouTube and, more importantly, itās enabled me to build a practice that feels aligned and sustainable.

When we think about narcissism, our attention is often drawn to the more extreme end of the spectrum - grandiose narcissism and narcissistic personality disorder. But what if there is also a more ordinary, everyday form of narcissism that many of us experience without even realising it?
In this video, I explore the idea that our natural drive for survival and status can lead us to become self-centred in ways that affect both ourselves and our relationships. Rather than focusing solely on identifying narcissism in other people, I also consider the role of empathy, self-awareness and our capacity to recognise narcissistic traits within ourselves.
I also introduce a simple exercise that may help you reflect on the depth of your own empathy and whether there are times when curiosity about others gives way to judgement or condemnation. My hope is that this offers a more balanced and compassionate way of thinking about narcissism that helps us better understand ourselves as well as the people around us.

Can therapists develop romantic feelings for their clients?
It's a question that many people wonder about but one that is rarely discussed openly. In this video, I explore the reality of romantic attraction in the therapy room, why it can happen, why it matters, and what ethical responsibilities therapists have if these feelings arise.
I also discuss concepts such as erotic transference, supervision, professional boundaries, and why feelings themselves are very different from actions.
This is an honest conversation about a complex and often misunderstood aspect of therapy, viewed through both a human and professional lens.
If you're a therapist, trainee therapist, current therapy client, or simply curious about what really happens behind the scenes in therapy, I hope you'll find something useful here.

30 years ago, a shocking event on a London tube train changed the way I think about human connection and trauma.
In this video, I share a story about a young man who experienced a sudden act of violence and chose a response that completely overrode the natural "fight, flight, or freeze" instinct. As a therapist, I look back on this moment to explore how we can integrate difficult experiences without letting them harden us or dictate how we see humanity.
I look at:
Question for you: Has a stranger ever shown you a different way to live or changed your perspective through a single act? Iād love to hear your stories in the comments.

Four years after my first "Day in the Life" video, Iām revisiting what a typical day looks like as a private practice therapist. In this video, I share the habits, routines, and boundaries that have helped me build a sustainable career over the last 15 years.
In this video, I revisit my āday in the life of a therapistā, not as someone newly qualified, but years into building a private practice.
What does the work actually feel like now?
Whatās become easier⦠and what still matters just as much?
I take you through a typical day, from my morning regulation routine to supervision, client sessions, and the reality of administration, including some of the things I wish Iād known when I first qualified. We also look at how the profession is changing, including the rise of online therapy and using platforms like YouTube to reach a global audience.
Along the way, I share some of the things I wish Iād known earlier, especially if youāre thinking about becoming a therapist, currently in training, or finding your way in the early stages of your career.

Have you ever had the feeling that your life looks right on the outside⦠but doesnāt quite feel right on the inside?
Whether itās your career, your relationships, or your identity, many of us reach a point where something feels off, like weāve been living a version of ourselves that works⦠but isnāt really us.
In this video, I explore the idea of the ātrue selfā and the āfalse selfā, not as something fake, but as a version of you that developed to survive, succeed, and belong.
I talk about why this can come up in so many areas of life:
ā Changing career
ā Becoming a therapist
ā Being in therapy
ā Sexuality, indentity and coming out
At the heart of it, this is about the gap between who you really are⦠and who youāve learned to be.
I talk about:
ā Why we develop a āperformativeā self (fear and status)
ā The emotional cost of living out of alignment
ā How this shows up in career and identity
ā Reconnecting with who you really are
ā Why finding the right people matters
ā If you're thinking about exploring therapy generally, Iād love to hear from you and youāre very welcome to get in touch with me via my website (https://www.thistrustedplace.co.uk) to find out more or to arrange an initial conversation.

Hi, Iām John-Paul, and a warm welcome back to the channel. Todayās conversation is an important and often emotional one - what happens when sexual identity is disclosed within a relationship, particularly when disclosure comes after the relationship has already been established and it doesn't go well. For many people, it can feel like a shock, or even a betrayal, but it can also be the beginning of something more integrated, and potentially more connected.
In this episode, Iām joined by Dr. Joshua Gebhart, a licensed marriage and family therapist who specialises in working with mixed-orientation couples, particularly where one partner identifies as gay or bisexual within a previously 'heterosexual' relationship.
We explore:
⢠Why disclosure can feel so destabilising
⢠The difference between identity and behaviour
⢠What happens when sexuality hasnāt been fully understood or expressed
⢠The role of shame, secrecy, and compartmentalisation
⢠How couples move through crisis into something more stable
⢠Why āstay together or break upā is often the wrong question
⢠What actually helps relationships survive, or end well
If you or someone you know is navigating this, I hope this offers some clarity and reassurance, that there are options, and that youāre not alone in it.
ā If you're thinking about exploring therapy generally, Iād love to hear from you and youāre very welcome to get in touch with me via my website (https://www.thistrustedplace.co.uk) to find out more or to arrange an initial conversation.

Hi, Iām John-Paul Davies and welcome back to the channel.
In this conversation, Iām joined by Dr Henry Aughterson (currently working as a doctor and training to become a therapist at Re-Vision in London) to explore what itās really like to train as a therapist, especially when coming from a medical background.
We talk about the differences between the medical model and psychotherapy, the depth and challenge of therapy training, and the personal journey that often sits underneath the decision to become a therapist.
In this video, we explore:
⢠Moving from medicine into psychotherapy
⢠The limitations of the medical model in addressing mental health
⢠What therapy training is actually like (and how intense it can be)
⢠The balance between intellect and emotion in becoming a therapist
⢠Social prescribing and the role of community in wellbeing
⢠Building an authentic presence on social media as a therapist
⢠Advice for anyone thinking about training
Henry also shares openly about his own experiences of mental health, identity, and navigating uncertainty, something many people considering this path will relate to.

In this video Iām talking about one of the most difficult and important questions when starting or running a private practice: How much should you charge?
Thereās no single ācorrectā fee for therapy, which is exactly why this can feel so confusing. In this video, I explore a more grounded way of approaching your pricing, one that takes into account your financial reality, your local context, and the psychological factors that can lead many therapists to undercharge.
I also share how Iāve approached setting and increasing my own fee over time, and why I believe demand, rather than comparison, can be a helpful guide. If youāre starting out, or thinking about raising your rate, I hope this gives you something to work from.

In this conversation, Iām joined by therapist and coach Gavin Lashley to explore a topic that often may not get enough attention the psychological journey of the non-birth partner, affectionately, āDadā.
Gavin is an integrative therapist working with CBT and Internal Family Systems, and heās also a relatively new father himself. Together, we explore what it really means to become a parent, not just practically, but emotionally and relationally.
We talk about:
⢠The identity shift of becoming a Dad
⢠Protecting and providing versus connecting and regulating
⢠Hormones, expectations and the pressure on modern Dads
⢠Community, isolation and the changing role of grandparents
⢠The impact on intimacy and the couple relationship
⢠Psychological preparation before the baby arrives
⢠Resentment, repair and communication under pressure
⢠Trauma anxiety and the fear of āgetting it wrongā
⢠Why perfection isnāt the goal, repair is

What happens when someone discloses that theyāre bisexual within a relationship? For some couples itās straightforward, but for others it can bring up shock, fear, confusion, or insecurity for both partners.
In this video I share some reflections on why disclosure can feel destabilising at first, how both peopleās reactions are understandable, and how couples can move toward integration over time. I also talk about common myths around bisexuality, including fears about infidelity or commitment and why honesty, while sometimes painful, can ultimately deepen connection.
If you or your partner are navigating this situation, I hope this offers some reassurance and perspective.
Iāll also be exploring this topic further in an upcoming interview with Dr Joshua Gebhardt, a therapist who works with mixed-orientation couples.

Starting to see clients for the first time can feel surprisingly nerve-wracking. In this video I share some reflections on how to steady yourself in those early sessions and what really matters when you first sit down with a client.
I talk about four foundations you can rest on: what you already bring as a person, the active role of the client, the power of the relationship between you, and the wider support that holds you as a therapist. I think a helpful aim isnāt to perform or impress, but to create a safe, attentive human connection.
If youāre just beginning to see clients, or about to start, I hope this offers some reassurance and perspective.

Human Connection in a Digital World
In this video, Iām sharing a practice version of a talk I gave for Rail Wellbeing Live on one of the most important foundations of good mental health: connection. After 15 years as a therapist, Iāve come to see connection, to ourselves, to others, and to the wider world, as central to wellbeing, meaning, and resilience.
In this talk, I look at:
⢠Why connection is vital for both mental and physical health
⢠Why so many people feel increasingly disconnected, despite knowing this
⢠How our survival, reward, and connection systems shape the way we relate
⢠Practical ways to strengthen connection with ourselves
⢠How digital media, social media, and AI can both support and undermine connection
⢠The role of face-to-face relationships, nature, and small moments of human contact
This is a reflective, practical talk rather than a polished studio video, shared here for anyone interested in wellbeing, mental health, and how we stay human in an increasingly digital world.
If you find this helpful, it would mean a lot if you could like the video, subscribe to the channel, or share it with someone who might benefit. It really helps the channel grow and supports me in making more content like this.

This is a compilation of what I think are some of the most meaningful moments from my videos and conversations on bisexuality so far, including pieces from my chats with Rob Brooks Cohen, Robyn Ochs, Tom Ward-Thomas and Mark Cuzack, as well as clips from my own videos on self-acceptance, coming out, finding community and living more fully as a bi person.
Bisexuality can be a really misunderstood and underrepresented experience. I hope this compilation brings together some honesty, vulnerability and helpful advice from everyone whoās contributed, from personal stories to conversations about identity, self-acceptance, loneliness, integration and community. If youāre questioning, exploring, or just looking to feel less alone, I really hope this helps.

In this video Iām talking with Dr Will Dobud about something Iāve barely touched on before: youth mental health.
Anxiety, depression, self-harm and distress in teenagers are reported to have risen dramatically in recent years, even as diagnoses, services and medications have increased. Will and I explore why that might be and, crucially, what actually helps.
Will is a social worker, therapist, educator and researcher based in Australia, and co-author (with Dr Nevin Harper) of the book āKids These Daysā, which I highly recommend if youāre interested in youth mental health and what adults can realistically do to support young people.
In this conversation we talk about:

Changing career doesnāt start with confidence, I think it starts with small choices that help you feel more connected to yourself.
In this video I talk honestly about confidence and career change and why you donāt need to feel confident before you start. I share how my own move from law into psychotherapy began not with certainty, but with small choices based on connection: taking a career break, trying out training, volunteering and noticing where I felt most āat homeā.
I walk through a simple process of connection ā choice ā competence ā clarity, and how confidence tends to grow naturally from those stages rather than being a starting point. I also talk about bringing your existing skills with you, planning realistically for the financial transition, and how your relationship with money, status and success may change over time.
Towards the end of the video I share two ācompare and contrastā memories, one from a high-pressure financial close as a lawyer and one from a 40-year celebration at my psychotherapy college, to give you a felt sense of the difference between a more disconnected life and one that feels aligned and alive.
If youāre thinking about changing career or retraining as a therapist, I hope this gives you some reassurance, some practical ideas, and a bit more compassion for yourself, especially if you donāt feel ready yet!
If anything in this video connects with you, Iād really love to hear from you in the comments with any questions, worries, hopes, or your own experience of thinking about a career change. And if you find it helpful, please do like, share and subscribe, it really helps the channel.

In this interview with Dr Ron Siegel, we look at the complexities of narcissism, its psychological roots, and the broad spectrum of behaviours it can cover. Ron is an Assistant Professor of Psychology at Harvard Medical School, a long-standing clinical psychologist and a leading voice in mindfulness-based psychotherapy. Heās known for his ability to bridge solid academic thinking with warm, practical wisdom, and he brings real clarity, care and decades of clinical experience to this topic.
We discuss everything from overt grandiosity to the quieter, more subtle forms of self-preoccupation that often go unnoticed or misunderstood. Narcissism is frequently stigmatised, but Ron offers a grounded, compassionate way of understanding these traits, exploring how they often stem from attempts to manage deep feelings of inadequacy.
We talk about the challenges therapists can face when supporting people with narcissistic traits, especially around motivation, defensiveness and genuine engagement in therapy and Ron highlights the importance of fostering self-awareness, empathy and the transformative power of self-compassion.
Through personal stories and examples, we also look at how narcissism affects relationships and wellbeing, as well as the cultural and evolutionary factors that shape these patterns. The conversation ends on a hopeful note, encouraging viewers to pursue real connection, curiosity and self-compassion as meaningful pathways to healthier relationships and personal growth.

What if Snow White wasnāt just a fairy tale but a potential mirror for our own inner journey? In this episode, I explore how Disneyās remake of Snow White reveals powerful lessons about overcoming narcissism and finding true inner integration. Iāll look at how the filmās archetypes and characters can guide us from grandiosity and self-protection towards self-acceptance and alignment and what that means for healing the split between our inner feminine and masculine.
By understanding the parts of ourselves we often push away, like anger, the heart, and the shadow, we can move toward authenticity, balance, and a more grounded sense of wholeness. Stay till the end for practical insights on how to work with these inner dynamics in your own life and relationships.

In this YouTube video I talk about making the transition from a current career to becoming a therapist, addressing two common concerns: the length of qualification and the financial transition involved in this career change.
Qualification Length: many people seek the quickest route to start their private practice, but, while the theoretical part of the training might be completed more quickly, the psychological shift required for many can significant and ongoing.
Financial Transition: the financial aspect of transitioning to a therapist is another major topic and I say some more about this in this video. I talk, for example about the importance of building a financial buffer and considering part-time or flexible work to sustain an income during the transition and qualifying as soon as someone can.
Psychological and Emotional Considerations: I also touch on the psychological challenges of this career change, such as managing fear and anxiety, which can impact the ability to build a successful practice.

In this episode, I explore the pressure that therapy trainees, and therapists more generally, can sometimes feel to go along with dominant views within training groups, supervision, or wider therapy spaces.
What happens when we donāt feel safe to express a different opinion?
What are the effects on our growth, learning and sense of self when we hold back?
And how do we create environments where difference is truly welcome?
Iād really love to hear your thoughts on this one, especially if youāve experienced something similar in your own training.

If you're a therapist or therapist-in-training looking to enhance your social media presence while staying true to your values, hopefully this video is for you.
I explore your WHY, your WHO, and your WHAT ā three key questions if you want to grow on social media in a way that feels sustainable and authentic. Drawing from my own experience, I share how social media can support (rather than drain) both your practice and your personal life.
In this video, I cover:
1. Why social media matters ā The potential benefits and the costs of putting yourself out there
2. Intentional use ā How to make sure it adds value rather than overwhelm
3. Authenticity ā Why showing your real self can help build deeper connections (while also staying aware of boundaries and ethics!)
4. Do you need a niche? ā Thoughts on whether to start with one, and how it can naturally evolve
5. Managing the challenges ā Including anxiety, comparison, and the psychological impact of being online
Whether you're just starting out or trying to grow, I hope this gives you encouragement and clarity.

Therapy's FUTURE?: Exploring the Integration of Neuroscience and AI in Therapy Training and Therapy (Subscriber's Question)
Here is the Subscriber's question: 'Moving over from an industry that has become dominated by AI (and having a lot of working years left), one of my concerns is for longevity of a profession. A friend of mine who recently finished a therapy adjacent Masters thinks that as mental health becomes increasingly integrated into the health system, less 'scientific' qualifications like a Diploma may hold less long-term value in terms of professional recognition or legal right to practice. Would you be able to offer your view on the topic (or dismiss it!), or point me towards any sources that offer some insight before I make my choice of training?'
In this episode, I addresses a subscriber's question about the future of the therapy profession and therapy training, focusing on the integration of neuroscience and artificial intelligence (AI). I explore how these fields are influencing training and practice in therapy, and the potential impact on the profession over the next 10 to 15 years.
Neuroscience in Therapy Training and Therapy:
The increasing integration of mental health into the health system in the UK.
The importance of combining scientific and symbolic approaches in therapy, allowing for a more holistic understanding of clients
Artificial Intelligence in Therapy:
The use of AI tools like ChatGPT in providing support between therapy sessions, offering quick, balanced cognitive assessments
The potential benefits and limitations of AI in therapy, including its inability to replace the empathetic and relational aspects of human therapists. Looking at issues including care, empathy and attunement, challenge, imperfection, embodiment and intuition.
The Future of Therapy Training:
The evolving nature of therapy diplomas and the integration of neuroscience into training programmes

In this really insightful and hopefully helpful podcast, I interview Karl Melvin, a therapist with over 13 years of experience in the area of navigating family estrangement. Karl defines estrangement as creating distance between family members, which can vary in degree and form, which can be emotional, geographical, or communicative. The discussion highlights the challenges and dynamics involved in estrangement, emphasising its complexity and the continuum from complete disconnection to minimal contact.
Karl shares some therapeutic approaches for dealing with estrangement, focusing on individual circumstances and the importance of understanding family dynamics. He discusses the role of communication in reconnection, suggesting the use of different mediums like video and voice notes, and stresses the importance of timing and changing circumstances.
The conversation also covers emotional and practical support strategies, including some from Karl's book, "Navigating Family Estrangement," offering insights and tools for understanding and managing this difficult and complex issue. These include Karl's "estrangement toolbox," which offers tools including emotional validation and practical planning for family events.
Karl encourages resilience and maintaining hope, advising viewers not to give up on themselves despite the difficulties they face and the challenges of estrangement. As ever, I hope it's helpful.

In this episode, I give some reflections on this Subscriber's Question: "Would you talk about if it makes sense to try to become a therapist if one is not healed herself, Is 'I can do this as a therapist because this helps me as a patient' realistic or delusional? Thanks!"
I talk about the complexities of being a therapist, focusing on the psychological state required to effectively support clients, revolving around the idea of whether therapists need to be fully healed themselves to offer meaningful therapy and how our personal development plays a crucial role in the therapeutic process.
Some areas I cover include:
The Therapist's Self as a Tool:
The importance of the therapist's personal development and self-awareness in creating a therapeutic relationship.
How the therapist's own journey and emotional regulation can influence the therapy process
Healing and Emotional Well-being:
Exploration of what it means to be "healed" and how therapists can manage their own emotional challenges while supporting clients.
The concept of healing as an ongoing process rather than a permanent state
Therapist's Emotional Regulation:
The role of emotional regulation in therapy and how therapists can maintain a balanced emotional state to effectively support clients.
Discussion on the unrealistic expectations placed on therapists to be emotionally perfect
Realistic vs. Delusional Expectations:
Addressing the question of whether it is realistic for therapists to believe that helping others can also aid in their own healing.
Insights into the mutual benefits of therapeutic relationships for both therapists and clients
Challenges and Responsibilities:
The challenges therapists face in managing their own emotional triggers and the responsibility to provide a safe and supportive environment for clients.

Note: all therapy/counselling courses are different and it would be great to hear how yours is similar/different to Harryās. Please do therefore feel free to comment on this below and on anything raised in the conversation generally
Harry Japp is a trainee psychotherapist at CCPE in London, and YouTuber at https://youtube.com/@UC2H_W34ylBp3nPvv6orhG8w where he shares insights from his training journey.
In this episode, Harry and I discuss his experiences and insights gained from his foundation course psychotherapy training, including the potential costs of training. Key Points include:
how the course includes lectures, experiential work, and personal therapy with an explanation and exploration of all these various elements,
the financial aspects of training, including tuition and additional costs for personal therapy and resources. The need to be aware of potential 'hidden costs' other than just the course fees, with details of these potential costs,
Harry shares some experiential exercises to give an idea of what to expect of this aspect of the course, including creating masks to symbolise persona and true self, highlighting the emotional differences when interacting as each,
an explanation of the 'triad' work involving the roles of therapist, client, and observer that's a part of therapy training courses,
great advice for anyone looking to begin a therapy course,
Harry's personal experience of both the benefits and the challenges of undertaking a course such as this.
Overall, the episode provides really valuable insights into what to expect from therapy training and the journey of self-discovery within the context of the training.

This podcast features my conversation with Lindsay Percival, focusing on the integration of spirituality and psychotherapy, along with talking about Lindsay's practice as a medium. Lindsay shares her journey from journalism to therapy, emphasising her spiritual awakening through experiences with healing energy.
Some of the many topics covered include:
Lindsay discusses the intersection of psychotherapy and mediumship, highlighting how her mediumship work aims to provide comfort to those grieving and to help heal relationships that may have been strained before a loved one's passing. She expresses her belief in the continuity of the soul beyond a physical end.
Lindsay introduces her program called "Soul Power," which aims to help individuals connect with their authentic selves and personal power. She discusses the importance of understanding one's soul's yearnings and the transformative journey involved.
We cover various therapeutic techniques used in her practice, including visualisation, creative imagination, and the development of a "Soul Care Plan" to help clients manifest their desires and needs.
A significant theme is the need for individuals to reconnect with themselves to gain clarity about their lives and desires. Lindsay emphasises the importance of intuition in therapy and the role of the therapist in facilitating this connection.
The conversation touches on the importance of self-love and the ongoing journey of personal development, encouraging individuals to validate themselves and cultivate healthier relationships.
Lindsay gives some great advice to therapists in training and also some very valuable general life advice.

In this episode, I welcome Dave Birchmore, a career transition expert, who shares insights on navigating career changes using his innovative model, VIA NOVA. This model, meaning "new path," is designed to help individuals successfully transition from one career to another.
Dave talks about his background in healthcare as a radiographer, his shift from a corporate role to entrepreneurship and, most recently, founding VIA NOVA to assist others in career transitions. We then talk in detail about the model itself, with me applying it to my own experience of becoming a therapist and subsequently setting up a private therapy practice. The 7 steps of the model we talk about are as follows:
Along the way we also talk about the potential challenges in career transitions, such as the emotional and financial hurdles faced and the societal pressures associated with leaving established careers. Dave gives lots of advice for aspiring career changers, including the importance of reaching out to those who have made similar transitions and an emphasis on the value of passion and fulfilment in one's career.

Training to be a therapist can have a profound impact on relationships. In this episode, I address a subscriber's question about how therapy training affects romantic and close relationships. While I can't provide specific advice, I offer reflections on the potential effects and how to navigate them.
Therapy training can help us develop better communication skills and boundaries, which can really benefit our relationships, but it's important to acknowledge that change may not always be easy, especially in long-standing relationships. Ultimately, therapy training can lead to personal growth and improved relationships, but I think it's important to approach it with realistic expectations and a willingness to work on ourselves. Let me know your thoughts as ever, I'd love to hear them!
Here's the subscriber's question:
'I'm currently going through training to become a therapist (very early on)
I'm a little concerned that once I'm super aware of my relationships and my personality etc, that I'm going to try and change my wife / give advice to, or push ideas onto her, around her personality traits and I'd obviously like to leave my personal relationship alone.
How do you navigate seeing traits in someone close to you, that you dislike or don't align with?'

In this episode, I welcome Lee Rasberry, a trainee therapist, to discuss his potential career transition from engineering to counselling. Lee shares insights from his journey, including challenges, passion, and has lots of valuable advice for those considering a similar path.
Key Points:
Lee's background: his experience in engineering and product management, completing an MBA at Warwick Business School and discovering a passion for psychology and organisational behaviour.
His catalysts for change: major life events, such as becoming a parent and the COVID pandemic, prompted Lee to re-evaluate his career, as well as personal experiences with counselling that ignited his interest in becoming a therapist.
Deciding to pursue counselling: Lee's realisation that a human-centered career path is likely to suit him better than his role in engineering, looking at the importance of self-reflection and identifying personal values.
Training at Matrix College: he talks about the integrative counselling degree course that he's currently studying, the balance of academic work and practical experience within the program.
Great advice for Aspiring Therapists: Lee has lots of suggestions for ideas to bear in mind in making the career change:
1 - What you do tomorrow doesn't devalue what you did today or yesterday.
2 - Change is inevitable, in you and in the world.
3 - Listen to your gut, give the cognitive muscle a rest.
4 - Explore and understand your values - recognise when they change.
5 - Seek new experiences that get you in touch with different sides of yourself.
6 - Expand your circle, look for variety in your connections.
7 - You cannot mitigate all the risk, dangers and unknowns. Change will cost time and money.
8 - You may never know if you don't have a go.
9 - Think about what you are moving away from, and towards.
10 - Think about the WORK, and HOW the work is done.
Challenges Faced: he talks about the potential challenges faced including balancing study, work, and family life while managing stress and deadlines.
Future Aspirations: Lee's goal of establishing a private practice while keeping an open mind about potential career developments as he encourages listeners to trust themselves and explore their passions.

Subscriberās question: āI'm struggling with this question right now. I've had a long career in technology, but am burned out from it and need to do something else. I also started getting counselling myself a few years ago and find it helpful and very interesting.
I'm also very much an introvert, and not really a people person at all, although I'm very sensitive and empathetic. How the heck do i know if i could be a good counsellor? Does a masters program sort of transform you into one?
Thanks!ā
This podcast is a response to the above subscriber's question about how to know if one would be a good counsellor, given that they don't consider themselves a great "people person" and are more introverted. It also addresses a comment from another viewer about the need for a "portfolio career" to earn enough as a therapist.
I explore what I think are many of the common traits and qualities of a 'good therapist', such as:
The podcast also mentions other qualities like creativity, connection to nature, and lack of competitiveness. Looking specifically at the subscriber's question, I suggest that their perception of themselves as not being a "people person" or being introverted may be shaped by their past experiences and environment. The training and being around other therapists can help transform these beliefs and bring out the qualities that are valued in the profession, encouraging the subscriber to be curious and observant about how they feel in the training environment and to trust their own experience.

Today is the release day of Caz Binstead's new book "Relational Ethics in Psychotherapy and Counselling Private Practice: Solidarity, Compassion, Justice (Ethics In Action)" (published by Routledge), which also features a short case study on my YouTube channel!
An excerpt from the Amazon book description: 'This book explores the ethics around everything connected with setting up and running a therapy private practice... The book provides exercises, examples, and vignettes, in addition to the author's own unique working model, to help the reader bring theoretical reflections into their own everyday practice...and... will help private practitioners feel more confident and grounded in their private practice and up-to-date with developing thoughts. It will also appeal to training institutes, supervisors, and students.'
In this podcast, I had the pleasure of chatting with Caz about her journey to releasing the book and the importance of ethics in private practice. She's an experienced private practitioner, supervisor, writer, and facilitator, with a passion for ethical and thriving practice. She has helped hundreds of therapists with their private practices and believes in the importance of balancing ethical considerations with business growth.
The book covers various topics, including solidarity, compassion, justice, and the importance of endings in therapy. Caz also runs projects like Trainee Talk and Therapists Create, which provide support and opportunities for therapists and trainees to connect and explore their creativity. If you're interested in learning more about ethical practice and the journey of releasing a book, this podcast is for you.

Men's Mental Health Awareness Month continues in November! In this podcast, I look into the importance of empathy for men and how it can help manage anger, foster vulnerability, and improve relationships by way of a thought experiment. Imagine a life where your close friends are gone, your internal guidance system is severed, and your worth is solely based on competitive wins or losses. This experiment sheds light on the daily struggles faced by many men - isolation, estrangement, shame, rage, and despair.
I think empathy is a key to change. By establishing empathy for ourselves and experiencing it from others, we can often understand more and address the root causes of our challenges. Coupled with a commitment to do things differently, empathy becomes a powerful catalyst for personal growth and healthier relationships.
Please do share your reflections and thoughts on this experiment and feel free to email me separately, I'd love to hear your insights. Take care of yourselves and stay tuned for more content.

In today's podcast, join me as I chat with James Hawes, an experienced therapist and author of 'The Secret Lives of Men', to discuss the topics of men and anger, as well as empathy and intimacy and the effects all of these have on men's lives and relationships.
Anger is a complex emotion that can have a significant impact on men's psychological and physical health. Often associated with protection and survival, it can be a valuable asset if managed consciously, however, if left unchecked, it can have catastrophic consequences. A lack of empathy can similarly strain relationships and hinder personal growth, as can a lack of intimacy, which plays a vital role in healthy relationships.
James is a therapist with extensive experience working with men and has a deep understanding of the impact of these issues on men's lives. During our conversation, he shares his insights into anger, emotional fitness, and the importance of empathy and intimacy. He discusses various therapeutic approaches and exercises that can help men develop emotional fitness and connect with their emotions and emphasises the significance of creating a safe and supportive environment for men to explore their emotions and vulnerabilities.
We also touch on the role of banter in male relationships and how it can sometimes hinder vulnerability and intimacy. James provides valuable insights into how men can navigate these challenges and foster healthier connections with others.
In conclusion, anger, empathy, and intimacy are interconnected aspects that significantly impact men's lives and relationships. By developing emotional fitness, cultivating empathy, and embracing vulnerability, men can enhance their overall well-being and create more fulfilling connections with others.

In this conversation, we explore the importance of ethical considerations and obligations that are involved in being a therapist in private practice, which are so important as we navigate our professional journeys.
We discuss a wide range of topics such as the key role of supervision, which provides therapists with guidance and support, insurance, necessary for protecting both the therapist and clients, the clinical will, outlining a therapist's wishes in case of incapacitation, and contracts, which establish clear boundaries and expectations between the therapist and their clients.
We also spend some time looking at the significant and ever-evolving use of social media by therapists, the importance of continuing professional development to enhance skills and knowledge, and the vital importance of self-care, which is often overlooked but is essential for maintaining a healthy therapist-client relationship.
I hope this conversation will really help anyone who's thinking about these important issues in the field of therapy. Whether you've been in practice a while or are just starting your journey in this field, this discussion is designed to provide valuable insights and practical advice that will be beneficial for your practice.

Exploring Red Flags and Narcissism: A conversation with Darren Magee
In this conversation, I sit down with experienced therapist Darren Magee for a deep dive into red flags or warning signs in relationships, particularly focussing on what they might be and how to recognise them and why we might ignore them. Darren has extensive experience of working with narcissism with both individuals and couples and there is often an overlap between these red flags and potentially narcissistic partners.
Our conversation covers a wide range of topics, offering valuable insights into the patterns of behaviour that might constitute worrying red flags, including 'love bombing', the significance of a pattern of minor rejections, struggles to communicate and comparisons with others, including exes/previous partners.
We dive deep into his perspectives on the stages of relationships, the psychology of someone with highly narcissistic traits, covert narcissism, the 'dark personalities' (including sociopathy) and the psychology of people who get into relationships of people with highly narcissistic traits and why they might deny or endure red flags and stay in toxic and coercive relationships.
