Hi I'm Benyi Johnson and I struggled with addiction for 7 years. However, in the summer of 2022 I decided to change my life and went into rehab. I started this podcast 90 days clean, and I want to take others along in my journey. Many challenges lie ahead of me and to be frank, I'm not sure if I will ever drink again. This is how Stairway to Redemption was born. It is my search for answers to what is going to work for me thus my aspiration to help those who are also battling active addiction figure out what will work for them.
Hello!..
...and welcome back to another episode of Stairway to Redemption. I can't believe it took me over 50 episodes to have one dedicated to boundaries. Thanks to this week's guest, Barb Nangle, a bondary coach, we are finally addressing this very important subject. As usual please follow us on social media and support us on Patreon.

Some of they questionable teachings. Their idea of service in the fellowship. Yeah we're going hard on the old timers in this one. Sorry not sorry

Welcome back to Stairway to Redemption. My guest this week is Caity, (different Caity from Katie in the episode on relapse and who is also featured in the round table episode, it was bound to happen a some point Katie is a way too common name lool). Caity and I met in the rooms of AA but one day we ran into each other at the gym. Knowing we both share a passion for fitness led me to want to know more about her. Boy I had no idea she had a long sobriety (she will be celebrating 9 years as this episode is released). Those who have listened to the podcast before know that I don't pay much attention to day count but it is still impressive to see a young person who has a long sobriety time. Listen to Caity's story and her take on recovery!

Hi there dear listeners of Stairway to Redemption. This is week I give you a special episode. I'm starting a new series called Recovery Study where I will be analyzing the teachings of recovery self-help books. The first book to be dissected by yours truly is REWIRED by Erica Spiegelman. I came across this book back while I was in patient during a workshop (shout out to Justine who used to run that class). I'm publishing this episode on the main podcast as well on the Patreon page but I think I will probably release future Recovery Study episodes exclusively on the Patreon page. Feel free to let me know your opinion. Enjoy!

This week guest is someone that I have been trying to get on the podcast for a long time. Joe was my first counselor in IOP (Intensive Out-Patient) fresh out of rehab. Initially scheduled to be my guest on the second episode, his participation to the podcast had been vetoed by the agency's higher ups for "conflict of interests". Now that he's no longer tied to the facility where I'm getting treatment, I can finally interview the man who introduced me to Stoicism and whose teachings helped me stay sober to this day!

Welcome to another great episode of Stairway to Redemption, a podcast about addiction and recovery. This week my guest is John "JW" Wiseman, CEO of Curious Elixirs non-alcoholic cocktails. JW shares with us the story behind Curious Elixirs and how it was born out of necessity. Among the topics brought up in this episode: the role of big alcohol in the sober-curious trend, the reluctance of some people in recovery, notably the hardliners in AA to drink non-alcoholic drinks. This week's guest is a very dear friend of mine: Nataly. Nataly and I met in the house music scene in NYC back in 2015. We were both deep in our drug and alcohol use back then. Unlike me, she had the presence of mind of getting out of that vicious circle before it became destructive. Nataly is not in recovery but she cultivates a greater sense of purpose. She now leads a wellness spiritual movement called Stay Grounded. Without due, I give you Nataly on the telltale signs of someone who is about to fall into addiction.

This week Stairway to Redemption is going abroad (via Zoom haha) to Germany, in Leipzig specifically. My guest, Revan and I met at ESCYPAA (Empire State Convention of Young People in Alcoholic Anonymous) back in October 2022. I was impressed by her dedication to her recovery. I mean who would fly across the Atlantic to attend a AA convention? That's commitment right there! Since Revan and I stayed in touch after her return back to Germany, I candidly asked her to share her experience with sobriety with us!

In this week episode of Stairway to Redemption, I welcome the sage Rudy Rios. Rudy is quite the figure of recovery in the Long Island AA community with over 30 years of sobriety. Not to mention, he also has a speaking commitment at the in-patient facility I went to back in the summer of 2022. With such a long sobriety, I figured Rudy must do something right and ought to share his wisdom with us hence the title. A wise man once said...

Episode 13 releasing on Friday the 13th! It's a sign guys! JK. This week on Stairway to Redemption, my guest is Drew. Although Drew has been sober for over 4 years, he bartends in one of the busiest bar of Philadelphia, not to mention he also hangs out around pool holes in his own time. It's fair to say that Drew is constantly surrounded by alcohol. Nevertheless his sobriety is unwavering. How did he reach this level of serenity? Well listen to this episode to find out!

Happy New Year! How fitting to open 2023 with a solo episode. This week I'm going over my State of the Mind Address. I attended Reprieve's NYE party. For those who don't know Reprieve is a collective of like-minded people who organize sober events (see link below). I also logged in my journal my inventory for 2022. This exercise helps me recalibrating myself in order to achieve goals set for 2023. Finally, I conclude this episode with my opinion on Dry-January and the intentions around the movements and it's effectiveness. As always rate us Spotify, Apple Podcast and follow us on social media. See you next week!

We're back baby!
After a week hiatus, Stairway to Redemption is back this week with Katie as our guest. Katie and I met at our outpatient program - see a pattern here? She was instrumental in the production of an earlier episode "Doing the SMART way". Katie introduced me to Michael Hooper, Outreach Director at SMART Recovery, guest of the episode mentioned earlier. This time it's her turn to be on the other side of the mic. On the menu this week, one of the most dreaded subject in recovery: relapse. Listen to her perspective on the matter. This week on Stairway to Redemption, I'm welcoming Joe and Rich, two friends I met in in-patient back in August. We happened to go to the same outpatient program after completion. In this episode we discussed the different tools of recovery we have learned so far and debated on their effectiveness and limitations. Basically we talked about what is currently working for us after being sober for roughly five months. The title "It works until it doesn't!" is a sentence often uttered by one of the counselor Joe LB (yeah different Joe) to illustrate the need for balance in all approaches to recovery. There is no absolute solution that works 100% all of the time...

This week's guest is Emily. Emily and I met at the outpatient program I currently attend. When she heard that I had a podcast she asked me if she could be a guest. Given she's young mother who is trying to do the best for her son, I deemed necessary that her voice be heard. I hope that her journey and the challenges she faces will resonate with other mothers who are seeking sobriety for them, and the sake of their family. Enjoy!

Ladies and gentlemen,
The episode this week in Stairway to Redemption is going to be a solo one. I deemed that after publishing five episodes this was a right time to do a self check-in. I plan on doing a solo episode every so often, ideally every five episodes. As promised find below links to other sobriety podcasts I think we can all benefit from.
Don't forget to follow us on social media. See you guys next week!

This episode guest, Julie, member of Al-Anon. Why invite somebody who is not in recovery you might ask. Well during one’s active addiction phase, the people we hurt around us also experience some type of trauma that is easily overlooked and not treated because they are not the “sick ones”. Some of them had to deal with trauma so severe that they fell into addiction themselves, hence this episode title: Collateral Damage. Let’s take a look at the destruction that an alcoholic/addict can cause to their loved ones.

In the first episode of this new adventure I'm interviewing Kevin, my AA (Alcoholic Anonymous) sponsor. Today's topic: The State of the Mind Address (a play on words with The State of the Union Address). We discuss the mental state that some of us are in just after getting out of in-patient. Also on the menu, the importance of AA's mantras and steps.
