The Trout's exclusive interview with Holly Mack, Lonnie Mack's daughter in this episode of Vinyl to Viral on the The Trout Show.

Lonnie Mack (1941–2016) was an American guitarist, singer, and songwriter widely recognized as the father of blues-rock guitar.

Born Lonnie McIntosh on a sharecropper’s farm in southern Indiana, he began playing at age seven, blending Merle Travis–style country picking with the black gospel and R&B he heard on late-night radio. By his teens he was a first-call session player in Cincinnati, backing Hank Ballard, Freddie King, and James Brown.

In 1963, Mack recorded the instrumental “Memphis,” an electrifying reworking of Chuck Berry’s song that reached #5 on the Billboard pop chart and introduced aggressive whammy-bar technique and rapid-fire picking to rock audiences. Its B-side, the original “Wham!,” was equally ferocious. Both tracks, cut on his 1958 Gibson Flying V (“Number 7”) through a Magnatone amp, are considered foundational recordings of blues-rock.

His debut album The Wham of That Memphis Man! (1964) remains a cornerstone of American roots music. Over the decades Mack recorded for Fraternity, Elektra, Alligator, and Epic; guested with The Doors; and in 1985 released the Stevie Ray Vaughan–produced comeback Strike Like Lightning. Though he repeatedly stepped away from the spotlight to fish and hunt in rural Indiana, his influence on Stevie Ray Vaughan, Eric Clapton, Duane Allman, Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page, Keith Richards, and countless others is undisputed.

Lonnie Mack died in 2016 at age 74, leaving behind one of the most powerful and soulful bodies of guitar work in rock history.

Marcus Hummon is a Grammy-winning singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, composer, playwright, and author whose illustrious career has left an indelible mark on country music and beyond. Born on December 28, 1960, as the son of a career diplomat, Hummon's early years were a global odyssey, taking him from Italy and Africa to the Philippines—experiences that infused his work with a worldly perspective and emotional depth. After studying at Belmont University and briefly pursuing a recording deal in Los Angeles, he found his true calling in Nashville in 1986. There, he honed his craft at legendary spots like the Bluebird Café, securing a songwriting contract that launched a string of timeless hits.

Hummon's pen has crafted some of country's most enduring anthems, including three No. 1 smashes: "Cowboy Take Me Away" and "Ready to Run" (The Chicks), "Born to Fly" (Sara Evans), and "Bless the Broken Road" (Rascal Flatts, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band). Other chart-toppers and fan favorites from his catalog include "Only Love" (Wynonna Judd), "The Cheap Seats" (Alabama), "One of These Days" (Tim McGraw), and "Love Is the Right Place" (Bryan White). His songwriting prowess earned him a 2019 induction into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame, a Grammy for Best Country Song, & two NSAI Songwriter of the Year nominations.

As a recording artist, Hummon debuted with the critically acclaimed All in Good Time on Columbia Records in 1995, followed by the faith-infused Looking for the Light in 1998 on his own Velvet Armadillo label. He also ventured into alternative country as part of The Raphaels alongside Big Country's Stuart Adamson, releasing Supernatural in 1998. His theatrical ambitions shine through in six musicals and an opera, including the folk-opera No Man’s Land (premiered at Belmont University in 2024), Surrender Road (staged by Nashville Opera), Warrior (about Jim Thorpe, earning a Native American Association of Tennessee award), Atlanta (a three-month run at LA's Geffen Playhouse), and The Piper (workshopped at NYC's Irish Rep). In literature, his children's book Anytime, Anywhere was published by Simon & Schuster in 2009.

In 2025, Hummon continues to push artistic boundaries with his acclaimed Songs for Emily project, a poetic fusion of Emily Dickinson's visionary verse and contemporary roots music. Kicking off with the 2024 EP on 3686 Records (founded by his son, artist Levi Hummon), featuring collaborations like Mary Chapin Carpenter on "I Dwell in Possibility," the series includes singles such as "I Never Saw A Moor," "Letter to the World" (with Darrell Scott), and "I Taste a Liquor Never Brewed" (with Sara Evans). Culminating in the full-length album Songs for Emily: The Album—released earlier this year—the project reimagines Dickinson's hymns to nature, spirituality, and imagination through Hummon's signature blend of country, folk, and balladry. "Emily's words were always meant to be sung," Hummon reflects, celebrating her as a quiet revolutionary whose 1,800 hidden poems continue to inspire.

A devoted family man living in Nashville with his wife, Becca Stevens, and their three sons (Levi, Caney, and Moses), Hummon's latest contributions— including songs on Jennifer Warnes's 2025 album Another Time, Another Place ("Once I Was Loved" co-written with John Legend, and "Freedom" from his Frederick Douglass musical)—affirm his role as a bridge between tradition and innovation. Whether penning chart-toppers, scoring films like the upcoming The Last Songwriter (featuring Garth Brooks and Jason Isbell), or illuminating literary giants, Marcus Hummon remains a beacon of creativity in American music.

Ray Dolby (January 18, 1933 – September 12, 2013) was an American engineer and inventor whose name became synonymous with pristine sound. Born in Portland, Oregon, Dolby’s fascination with audio began early, playing piano and clarinet while tinkering with sound technology as a teenager. At just 16, he joined Ampex Corporation, where he played a key role in developing the first practical videotape recorder in 1956. After earning a B.S. in electrical engineering from Stanford University in 1957 and a Ph.D. in physics from Cambridge University in 1961 as a Marshall Scholar, Dolby’s passion for clear sound led him to found Dolby Laboratories in London in 1965.

That same year, he invented the Dolby noise-reduction system (Dolby NR), a groundbreaking technology that eliminated the distracting tape hiss plaguing analog recordings, transforming music production and playback for artists and listeners alike. His innovation became a standard in cassette tapes and recording studios, adopted by major labels like Decca, RCA, and MCA. Dolby didn’t stop there—he revolutionized film sound, tackling optical soundtrack noise with Dolby Stereo, first used in A Clockwork Orange (1971) and later in iconic films like Star Wars (1977). By the 1990s, his Dolby Digital surround sound, debuted in Batman Returns (1992), set the standard for immersive cinema experiences, now ubiquitous in theaters, DVDs, and streaming.

Holding over 50 U.S. patents, Dolby’s innovations earned him numerous accolades, including two Academy Awards for Scientific and Technical Achievement, multiple Emmys, a Grammy, and the National Medal of Technology from President Clinton in 1997. A philanthropist, he left £120 million to Cambridge University, funding the Ray Dolby Centre for physics research. Dolby died in 2013 at 80 in San Francisco, leaving a legacy that continues to shape how we experience sound in music, film, and beyond.

A true pioneer, he not only revolutionized the electric guitar but also transformed the recording industry with his groundbreaking inventions. Alongside his wife, Mary Ford, Paul became a household name in the 1950s, selling over 10 million records with a string of chart-topping hits that blended his virtuosic guitar playing with Ford’s smooth, layered harmonies.

A Musical Partnership That Defined an Era

In the late 1940s and early ‘50s, Les Paul and Mary Ford dominated the music charts. Their unique sound—featuring Paul’s dazzling guitar work and Ford’s harmonized vocals—was unlike anything heard before. Thanks to Paul’s invention of multi-track recording, they were able to layer Mary’s voice multiple times, creating a lush vocal texture that became their signature style.

Hits like "How High the Moon," "Vaya Con Dios," and "The World Is Waiting for the Sunrise" cemented their status as superstars. They had 16 Top 10 hits between 1950 and 1954, with their music reaching millions of fans and defining an era of American pop music.

While Les Paul’s guitar skills were legendary, his most revolutionary contribution to music was the invention of multi-track recording. Before Paul, musicians had to record songs in a single take. But in 1948, he introduced sound-on-sound recording, allowing him to layer multiple instruments and vocals separately—forever changing how music was produced.

This breakthrough paved the way for modern recording techniques, influencing artists from The Beatles to Michael Jackson. Without Les Paul, the way albums are recorded today would be vastly different.

The Birth of the Les Paul Guitar

Paul’s innovations didn’t stop at the studio. He was instrumental in the development of the solid-body electric guitar, leading to the creation of the legendary Gibson Les Paul. Introduced in 1952, this guitar became one of the most iconic instruments in rock and roll history, played by legends like Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton, Slash, and Paul McCartney.

Even today, the Gibson Les Paul remains a symbol of electric guitar excellence, prized by musicians across genres for its rich tone and sustain.

A Legacy That Lives On

A debut album is more than just a collection of songs—it’s a defining statement of passion and purpose. For singer-songwriter Nick Taylor, Not Alone— released June 2025 —serves as an extraordinary introduction, blending rich storytelling with heartfelt melodies that firmly establish his place in today’s Americana landscape.

Until now, Nick has built his reputation as a solo performer, armed with his expressive vocals and an acoustic guitar. But with Not Alone, he takes a bold leap forward, collaborating with a team of top-tier musicians, producers, and engineers. “This album is a dream realized,” Nick shares. “To work with such talented people and bring these songs to life is an incredible experience. It’s my first full-length release, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to share it with the world.”

Produced by William Gawley and recorded at Omnisound Studios in Nashville, Not Alone features some of the finest session musicians in the business. The album’s sonic landscape is as diverse as its themes—ranging from the haunting introspection of “Futures Past” and the evocative road-weary reflection of “3AM On The Interstate” to the tender embrace of “Carry You Home” and the fiery drive of “Heart on the Run.”

One of the album’s most personal tracks, “Dogs,” is a raw exploration of anxiety and self-doubt—an anthem of vulnerability that inspired the album’s title. “This song is about uncertainty, how it manifests, and how it affects those around us,” Nick explains. “Mental health is a conversation we need to have, and my hope is that this song helps someone feel less alone.”
Another standout, the fiddle-driven “Dead Land Future,” draws from Nick’s experience working on farms while studying the decline of Texas farmland. “It’s about hard work, struggle, and the impact of a changing world,” he says. Likewise, the closing track, “Songs About the Glory,” captures the hopes and hardships of everyday workers who push forward, believing in the promise of something greater.

Nick’s music is deeply rooted in honesty and storytelling, shaped by his upbringing in rural Southeast Texas and his journey through jazz studies, self-taught guitar sessions, and open mics in Austin. Inspired by legends like Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson, Leonard Cohen, and contemporary voices such as Jason Isbell and Nathaniel Rateliff, he crafts songs that reflect the depth of human experience.

Now performing across the country, both solo and with his band, Nick is stepping into a new chapter. His debut album, Not Alone, is more than just an introduction—it’s a testament to resilience, connection, and the power of music to bring people together.

Kurt Maloo, best known as one half of the iconic pop duo Double, co-wrote and sang the timeless hit “The Captain of Her Heart,” the most enduring Swiss song to date. This global classic, with its haunting melody and poignant lyrics, continues to captivate audiences worldwide, earning a permanent place in music history.

Maloo's journey as a musician and artist began in the mid-1970s in Zurich, where he stood out not only as a singer and guitarist but also as a painter and member of the avant-garde Performance Art Group MAEZ. His creative evolution led to Troppo, an art-punk cult band, and then Ping Pong, a trio that gained recognition at the Montreux Jazz Festival. In the late 1970s, Maloo and drummer Felix Haug formed Double, a groundbreaking project that reached international success with their debut album Blue, selling millions of copies and solidifying their place in music history.

Joe Deninzon, widely celebrated as “The Jimi Hendrix of the Violin,” is a trailblazing musician known for his groundbreaking work with the “Viper,” a seven-string electric violin. His innovative style and virtuosity have redefined the possibilities of the instrument.

Currently, Joe is the electric violinist, backup vocalist, and rhythm guitarist for the legendary rock band Kansas. He also serves as the lead vocalist and violinist for the progressive rock band Stratospheerius, which recently released its critically acclaimed sixth album, Impostor!

Joe’s illustrious career includes collaborations with iconic artists such as The Who, Bruce Springsteen, Sheryl Crow, Ritchie Blackmore, Smokey Robinson, Les Paul, and many more. He has also performed as a soloist with Jazz at Lincoln Center and the New York City Ballet. A prolific recording artist, Joe can be heard on over 100 albums and jingles, showcasing his talent as both a violinist and string arranger.

Joe’s diverse projects include his work with the Sweet Plantain String Quartet, blending Latin Jazz, hip-hop, and classical music, as well as annual performances at the Grand Canyon Music Festival with harmonica virtuoso Robert Bonfiglio.

As an educator, Joe co-founded the Grand Canyon School of Rock in 2007, an annual program for high school students in Northern Arizona. He is also a faculty member at New Jersey City University’s Multi-Style Strings Program and travels globally as a clinician. His instructional book, Plugging In, was published by Mel Bay in 2012.

Chris Haigh’s book Discovering Rock Violin lists one of Joe’s solos among the “Top 20 greatest rock violin solos of all time.” Joe has also contributed articles to Strings Magazine, Downbeat, American String Teachers Journal, and Making Music Magazine.

Danny Garwood has been playing guitar with passion for six years, drawing inspiration from blues greats like Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Eric Gales, and Stevie Ray Vaughan. Based in Nashville, TN, his mission is to keep the blues alive and inspire the next generation of musicians.

Danny’s musical journey began at just 10 years old when he attended his first jam session and was invited to perform. That moment sparked a deep love for the guitar, and by age 11, he was playing regularly at live shows and jam sessions.

In 2022, Danny competed in the prestigious '10 under 20' competition at the Dallas International Guitar Festival. During the event, blues artist Ally Venable invited him to join her on stage, a performance that went viral on YouTube with over 5 million views. This moment led to further opportunities, including opening for Ally in Houston, TX, and Nashville, TN. In 2023, Danny returned to the '10 under 20' competition, placing 3rd as its youngest participant.

“Electric Lady Studios: A Jimi Hendrix Vision” recounts the transformation of a bankrupt Manhattan nightclub into a cutting-edge recording facility, driven by Jimi Hendrix’s dream of owning a permanent studio. As the first artist-owned commercial recording studio, Electric Lady Studios was born from Hendrix's initial vision of creating an immersive nightclub experience, inspired by Greenwich Village’s short-lived Cerebrum, where patrons wore flowing robes amidst flashing lights, spectral images, and swirling soundscapes. Enamored by this unique setting, Hendrix enlisted Cerebrum's architect, John Storyk, to collaborate with him and his manager, Michael Jeffery. Together, they sought to turn the former Generation Club into what Hendrix called "an electric studio of participation." However, plans shifted from nightclub to studio, ultimately giving birth to Electric Lady Studios.

Rob McNelley, the acclaimed Nashville guitarist known for his work with legends like Bob Seger, Dolly Parton, and Luke Combs, has just released his latest single, “The Other Side.” This slow-burning track, anchored by a gritty bass line and showcasing McNelley’s signature guitar mastery, is the newest in a series of Americana-infused singles he's been releasing throughout the year. “The Other Side” follows his previous releases, “Circus Is Leaving Town” and “Right Back To You,” each highlighting the range and depth of his songwriting and musicianship.

“The Other Side” is a reflection on seeing things from a different perspective and opening yourself up to new possibilities," McNelley explains. "It’s about accepting that you might be wrong about long-held beliefs—and being okay with that. The song is about evolving in your thinking and setting aside ego to truly understand another point of view. Plus, it brings a stronger focus on the guitar work that I love to do."

McNelley’s career is defined by his dedication to finely crafted songs, making him one of the most in-demand guitarists in country music. Renowned for his distinctive tone, feel, and melodic sensibility, he has contributed to numerous chart-topping hits and has earned multiple ACM “Guitar Player of The Year” awards and CMA “Musician of The Year” nominations. Kiersi Joli began her journey with the harmonica at the tender age of 6. By 9, she had already made history as the youngest Hohner Harmonica endorser, a title she proudly still holds. At 11, Kiersi became the sole endorser for Dyna-mic harmonica microphones, solidifying her place as a rising star in the blues world. Now at 16, Kiersi captivates audiences with her powerful tone, masterful harmonica skills, and dynamic vocals that far exceed her years. A seasoned performer, she has shared the stage with the likes of Jamey Johnson and The Loving Mary Band, and has made appearances on the "Show-Me-St. Louis" TV show and Heidi Newfield’s "Barfly Sessions."

Kiersi’s musical repertoire spans a range of genres, with a strong foundation in Blues, Blues Rock, and Americana. Her sound is deeply rooted in soulful blues, drawing from a wide array of influences while carving out a unique identity that resonates with fans of all ages. In addition to performing, Kiersi is expanding her musical horizons through session work and as a singer, songwriter, and performer.

She has been invited to collaborate with Banner Music Publishing, participating in co-writes with their staff songwriters and performing at their takeover songwriter rounds. Kiersi is a regular at the Music Row Freakshow at The Local and frequently performs at songwriter rounds and showcases across Nashville.

In May 2024, Kiersi was invited to perform at the Opelika Songwriter Fest in Alabama and the North Central Women In Blues Fest in Gainesville, Florida. She was also a featured artist at the Black Mountain Blues Festival in North Carolina, where she performed on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from July 12-14.

At eleven, Ruthie Craft faced the challenges of a new Tourette’s syndrome diagnosis. No one could have predicted that five years later, she’d be onstage, singing a duet with an international superstar. Over the next decade, she would conquer new challenges and heartbreak, becoming a powerhouse singer-songwriter with millions of streams and her own EP. "Tourette's was my reason to sing," Ruthie shares. "When I sang, my tics went away, and I felt normal, if only for a moment."

As a teenager, discovering Adele’s debut album, 19, cemented Ruthie's passion for music. She began teaching herself the basics of singing and songwriting. "One morning, I looked at the lyrics I had written on the big whiteboard in my room and thought, ‘this is my purpose.’" Without formal guidance on breaking into the music industry, she started performing at open mics and talent shows, eventually winning a contest to sing with country star Keith Urban. At that time, her onstage outfits were a mix of hand-me-downs and thrifted items, reflecting her resourcefulness as a part-time barista.

At 19, Ruthie's whirlwind marriage took her from her home state of Washington to North Carolina, far from her family and friends. As her marriage ended, she found solace in music, exploring new genres like rap and hip hop to rediscover her voice. "The mixture of inspiring lyrics and bold productions made me feel alive," she recalls.

Divorced and determined at 23, Ruthie reached all three rounds of Hollywood Week on American Idol in 2019. "The insecurity I felt from watching a hundred talented singers perform their original songs pushed me to learn how to write my own. I witnessed the difference between singers, performers, and what it means to be both: an artist." Since then, she has collaborated with producers and artists across the country, sharing stages with Sir-Mix-A-Lot, Shakey Graves, Magic City Hippies, Die Spitz, and Raelyn Nelson.

In 2024, Ruthie received a Sonic Guild grant. She explains, "I want to make music that makes people feel alive, comforted, and helps connect them to their own joy and pain." Each performance is an opportunity to "let my emotional filters down and invite the audience to do the same." Her cinematic pop-soul sound features powerful vocals, moody, soulful tones, and slick lyrics, drawing comparisons to Imagine Dragons, early Maroon 5, Amy Winehouse, and Dua Lipa.

Ruthie continues to hone her craft in Austin, TX. Her debut EP, Sound of Blue, is set to release in September 2024.

Matt Krahula is a versatile multi-instrumentalist, singer-songwriter, and producer based in Honolulu, HI. He currently plays bass for Grammy-nominated artist Henry Kapono, fronts The Nightmare River Band, and is one half of the chamber folk duo Beyond Hope with Canadian singer-fiddler Sierra Noble. After years of touring the mainland and immersing himself in the vibrant New York City music scene, Krahula relocated to sunny Waikiki. Since 2018, he has become one of Hawaii's most sought-after artists, holding residencies at some of Oahu's top bars and clubs, and opening for major acts like Silver Sun Pickups, Frank Turner, Mike Love, Jerry Santos, and Keola Beamer.

Krahula began his musical journey at the Purchase Conservatory of Music, earning a Bachelor’s degree in Classical Music Performance on Upright Bass. This year's outing marks the 20th anniversary of the Experience Hendrix Tour. The Georgia Thunderbolts' ascent to becoming heralded as the next torchbearers of Southern rock was far from glamorous. Not long ago, the band found themselves busking at gas stations, stumbling through covers, and traveling hours to Alabama to perform for a sparse audience of a bartender and a three-legged dog.

Fast forward to today, and the Rome, Georgia-based quintet has emerged as a critically acclaimed and globally touring band, defying the sophomore slump with their latest release. Comprising Zach Everett on bass, classical guitar, and harmony vocals; Bristol Perry on drums; Logan Tolbert on guitar; and Riley Couzzourt on guitar, the band's music embodies an earthy and emotive aesthetic that draws from various influences, including late 1960s singer-songwriter intimacy, the blues' yearning, the storytelling of country music, and a hearty dose of arena-ready classic hard rock.

The hero’s journey traces a main character who goes on an adventure, is victorious in a decisive crisis, and comes home changed or transformed. Country artist, philanthropist, veteran, and North Carolina native Rockie Lynne’s life story is truly a hero’s journey.

From his humble beginnings of being left at the door of Barium Springs Home for Children, to touring the world, selling hundreds of thousands of records, and writing songs recorded by superstars, you can say Rockie’s narrative is the stuff of American folklore.

Rockie grew up in Statesville, North Carolina, and was adopted by a Southern Baptist family of limited means. He grew up on Statesville’s dirt roads, and they led him to anthemic success in the entertainment world as a triple threat: a world-class songwriter, a captivating performer, and a diversely accomplished instrumentalist.

Where I Belong deftly merges a musician’s quest for authentic self-expression with a touching search for familial lineage. There’s Rockie’s all-consuming love of the guitar which spans picking out licks on a second hand record player to his post-Army dreams of becoming the next Eddie Van Halen. Incidentally, these finely-honed chops remain intact, and they are a staple of Rockie’s music, dazzlingly displayed in his live-show duels with his fiddle player, Dirk Dowell.

A profound chapter in Where I Belong is Rockie meeting his biological father, Clyde Holloway. The pair share a powerful moment when Clyde gifts Rockie with his prized Martin D35, a guitar that he had owned most of his adult life. “When he gave me that guitar, I felt a closeness to him that didn’t exist before,” Rockie says. Clyde’s guitar has since become an integral part of Rockie’s artistry as a player and a composer because of the significance of its lineage. The newly-penned “My Father’s Guitar,” a single from Love, out March 29th, commemorates this moving moment.

After hundreds and hundreds of watering-hole one-nighters, Rockie got his big break being signed personally by then Universal Music Group CEO Doug Morris. He issued his self-titled solo debut in 2006, and landed three singles on the Billboard Hot Country Songs charts. After Universal South folded, Rockie, an accomplished engineer, producer, and owner of his own recording studio, Tone Studios in Statesville, pushed ahead releasing nine solo albums to date.

Rockie has generously harnessed the expanse of his public platform in service of others. He is a veteran, having served as a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne Division, and this legacy is close to Rockie’s heart. He often performs for patriotic and military events, and his original songs are regularly licensed for use in conjunction with veteran and patriotic-themed programming. In 2004, Rockie co-founded the Tribute to the Troops motorcycle ride to raise funds and awareness for America’s fallen soldiers and their families.

Today, Rockie is back in Statesville where he has a stable and loving family and his own recording studio in which he nurtures local talent, and around town he’s mythologized as an Elvis-like figure with his chiseled-face handsomeness, his down-to-earth charms, and his immense artistic gifts. Looking back on his journey, and through the process of making the documentary and connecting with his biological family for the first time, Rockie reflects: “I went from feeling unloved to knowing I’m loved, and that I’ve always been loved. I found my roots—I am somebody from somewhere.”

For some, the process of making music can appear effortless. For others, bringing one’s music to life might take decades. The music welling up in the heart and mind of its creator, like a fine wine, or in this case, one of the finest debut albums, by any artist, in any genre, in many decades.

One could say that Tommy Taylor has one of those classic “you don’t know me, but you’ve heard me” musician stories. He has spent years as the drummer and backing vocalist behind singer/songwriter (Grammy and Oscar winner) Christopher Cross and guitarist Eric Johnson. Tommy has also played behind: Stevie Ray Vaughan, Charlie Sexton, Will Sexton, Sara Hickman, Charlie and Bruce Robison, Kelly Willis, Jake Andrews, Jerry Jeff Walker, Ray Benson and Shawn Colvin.

Tommy has been preparing himself and his music for years to become the album Across The Stars. It is a recording comprised of what Taylor calls “Chekovian vignettes” - nine cinematic stories filtered through a lifetime of insights and emotions, delivered in his tenor voice that falls somewhere between the lilt of Jackson Browne’s and the edge of Don Henley. Taylor’s lyrics are incredibly personal and incredibly universal simultaneously. Who hasn’t felt like the people in your life were there to “Let You Down?” Taylor describes himself as an observer. However, the songs on this album are filled with the stories and experience you get by living - not by watching. At the end of the 9 songs, you are left with a man’s personal catharsis, and you are the richer for having had the experience.

After years of his friends and colleagues encouraging Tommy to write his songs and get them recorded, Taylor finally went in the studio and started work on the album. With a little help from Christopher Cross, legendary record producer and keyboardist Michael Omartian (Christopher Cross, Donna Summer, Rod Stewart, Amy Grant, Steely Dan, Glen Campbell, Boz Scaggs, Jerry Garcia and Dolly Parton) agreed to play on Tommy’s album. After finishing his work and hearing the final mixes Michael said: “Man, this is a really good album. Everything sounds great. Wonderful songs and the overall production and musicianship is first rate.” That was on top of praise for Taylor’s vocals on various tracks, and his declaration that the song “Everybody’s Gonna Let You Down” “sounds like a smash.” You might catch yourself singing along to that chorus the very first time you hear it.

Michael Omartian’s words are a priceless endorsement, especially for an artist whose debut work has taken a few decades to arrive. But in his Across The Stars liner notes, Taylor explains, “This first effort is a culmination of a lifetime of personal ups and downs, and interests and pursuits.” Isn’t that a perfect description of a life well-lived? Across the Stars was released on September 22nd, 2023.

Zachariah Smith is a 20-year-old singer and songwriter from Wabash, Indiana. His infatuation with music was evident at a very young age, and he grew up singing at every opportunity available. Zachariah made his musical debut on the 21st Season of American Idol earlier this year, where his show stopping musical abilities took him all the way to the top 5. Janet Robin, a Southern California native, began her musical journey under the tutelage of guitar teacher Randy Rhoads. In high school, she became the lead guitarist for the all-female rock band Precious Metal, signed to Polygram and later Chameleon/Capitol Records. After the band's dissolution, Fleetwood Mac's Lindsey Buckingham handpicked her for his 1992 solo album, profoundly influencing her music career.

In 1998, she debuted with "Open the Door" on Little Sister Records, earning praise for its pop sound. Janet's musical exploration continued with the 2007 acoustic EP "Days of Summer," recorded in Europe. In 2012, she bridged acoustic and rock with "Everything Has Changed," funded by her dedicated fan base. Collaborating with producer John Carter Cash at Cash Cabin Studios, she released the album in Europe through Hypertension Music.

Janet's solo career expanded globally with successful tours in Europe, including headlining shows and festivals. She collaborated with diverse artists, including Lindsey Buckingham, Tommy Emmanuel, and Michelle Shocked. Her original songs found placements in TV shows and films, showcasing her versatility.

Beyond her solo endeavors, Janet is a guitarist in the band "The String Revolution," nominated for a Grammy® for their unique arrangement of "Folsom Prison Blues" featuring Tommy Emmanuel. The band's EP "Red Drops" gained popularity on Spotify, and they received acclaim for their live performances.

A candid and exclusive interview with Susan Bissett, PhD, President, of the West Virginia Drug Intervention Institute about how they are attempting to reverse overdose deaths.

The mission of the Drug Intervention Institute is to reduce opioid and drug-related deaths by (a) preventing substance use through education (b) reducing overdose through training and distribution related to naloxone and other opioid reversal agents, and, (c) supporting harm reduction and other drug-response efforts.

To fulfill its mission, WV DII is carrying out activities under three objectives – education, collaboration, and prevention.

The West Virginia Drug Intervention Institute (WV DII) began in May 2019, after nine months of study and deliberation regarding the best ways to reduce opioid drug deaths in West Virginia. Funding was promised by the Winston-Salem Foundation from a donor-advised fund established by BB&T (now Truist). The founding members of the board interviewed people involved in and concerned about substance abuse, researched response activities elsewhere, identified possible response gaps, developed the Institute concept, and conducted the search for a president. WV DII is an independent 501(C)(3) entity. In addition, the partnership with an academic institution positions the WV DII with the unique ability to conduct research and analysis of program outcomes.

Nina DiGregorio, a Yamaha string artist, is a classically trained violinist, bass player, writer/arranger, vocalist, and pianist, but is most well known for being a pioneer of the electric rock violin, as well as a music business mogul and entrepreneur. She has performed as a soloist and string arranger with the some of the biggest names in the business. She arranged and performed strings with The Killers for President Obama and on one of their recent albums.

Television credits include the Latin Grammys with Shakira, being featured on the Beyonce “I am…Yours” DVD and both “David Foster and Friends” DVDs and PBS specials, alongside Josh Groban, Michael Bublé, Boz Scaggs, and Peter Cetera among others, as well as the featured soloist with Charice. Other television credits include a performance with Andrea Bocelli for the DVD and PBS special “Amore Under the Desert Sky,” The Muhammad Ali 70th Birthday Celebration, “Michel Legrand and Friends,” “Bell’aria PBS special,” and America’s Got Talent Season One with Bella Electric Strings, of which she is founder, writer, and lead violinist.

She was the solo violinist in Toni Braxton’s band for 2 years. Nina was also featured in a recent Blues Traveler performance, dueling with harmonica virtuoso John Popper on The Devil Went Down To Georgia. Other performance credits include Stevie Wonder, Deep Purple, Cheap Trick, Wayne Newton, Cee-lo Green, John Legend, Johnny Mathis, Smokey Robinson, Trans-Siberian Orchestra, Donna Summer, Mary J Blige and Jay Z, Earth, Wind, and Fire, Marco Antonio Solis, and many more.

As a writer/arranger, her work has been heard in shows such as “Toni Braxton Revealed,” “Beyonce I Am….Yours,” The Fab; Beatle’s Tribute Band, The Las Vegas Tenors, The Killers, The Yellow Brick Road Symphonic Rock Show, as well as on many studio recordings.

Nina’s work with her project Bella Electric Strings can best be described as, “imagine if Hendrix played a violin.” Utilizing full effects pedals and blistering solos, she brings to life many famous rock tunes for electric string ensemble. On top of opening for Michael McDonald and Charlie Daniels, Bella recently performed as the featured string quartet with Richard Marx in his Las Vegas show. Richard also hired twenty Bella girls to be featured on camera performing with himself, Kenny Loggins, and Eric Benet for a DirecTV special that aired over the summer of 2016. Bella Strings has also had the privilege of being affiliated with the prestigious “Rock and Roll Fantasy Camp,” performing alongside such artists as Kip Winger and Todd Rundgren at the facility. The group keeps a busy corporate schedule, as well as traveling for Yamaha String Educator Development Seminars, in which Nina’s arrangements are featured around the country to demonstrate the Yamaha Silent and Electric violins.

Nina created/produced a rock production show called “FEMMES OF ROCK starring Bella Electric Strings,” which has been selling out theaters nation wide. Other creations include Bella Bottoms; a disco string show, an LED Laser string show, Trifecta; a vocal string show, Jingle Bellas; a holiday string show, among others.

Nina holds a Bachelor of Arts in English from the State University of New York at Buffalo, as well as a Bachelor of Music in Violin Performance. She also holds a Master of Music degree in Violin Performance from the University of Nevada Las Vegas. She was a recent recipient of the coveted Distinguished Alumni award from the University at Buffalo; one of the youngest to receive the award.

Originally from the Birmingham, AL area, Robert Abernathy has been playing to audiences all over the country for the past 30 years as a Singer/Songwriter and Country Artist. He is the 2018 Male Alabama Country Artist of the Year recipient along with numerous other awards. As a teacher for 25 years, Robert was a Middle School and High School Science and Physical Education Teacher while playing weekend shows that would allow him to pursue part of his dream as a singer/songwriter. After retiring as an educator from the state of Alabama, Robert and his wife moved to Nashville to chase the dream. Robert is the Lead singer of the Eagles Tribute Band, Eagle Sunrise and the Lead singer of the Alabama Tribute Band, Alabama Sunset in addition to his own band, the Robert Abernathy Band. “The late Irish poet and author John O’ Donohue had this fantastic notion about how there are three key things you absolutely need to have any kind of balance in this damn world: silence, stillness, and solitude. We’re obviously living in a time that’s utterly devoid of any of those three things.” Berman, who just welcomed his second daughter this year, adds, “As much as parenting is this unbelievable well of joy and wonder, it also just quadruples that cacophony. You’re always dealing with the beginnings or the aftermath of chaos. I knew that if I couldn’t find a way to make space for that silence, stillness, and solitude in my life, I’d be a much worse father, husband, and songwriter for it.”

The artist’s own musical journey continues to zigzag through uncharted territory. In 2014, Eddie made his debut with the EP Blood & Rust, featuring his duet of “Dancing in the Dark” with British folk icon Laura Marling. The adored Springsteen cover received praise from Spin, NME, Consequence of Sound, Uncut and more. In the aftermath, Berman’s profile grew on international tours and with the release of his first LP Polyhymnia. As he settled into life in his new city, he began making a daily pilgrimage to nearby Forest Park, one of the largest urban forests in the US. He made it a ritual to go on a six mile hike each morning, during which he immersed himself in the books and lectures of great philosophers like O’ Donohue, Rainer Maria Rilke, Thich Nhat Hanh. “I’d hike the immensely beautiful three miles to the top of the trail listening to these incredible thinkers, and then hike back down in silence, unpacking what I’d heard. The constant through lines of these works started seeping into me: the deep solace of nature, the necessity of solitude, and the importance of always trying to see yourself on the threshold to new frontiers. This album came from that strange dualistic aspect of those hikes: one part of me was just trying to quiet my mind as I walked in the woods, and the other part of me was trying to, you know, dissect the infinite nature of the universe — and myself.

With over 27 years on the road, Country Music composer RODRIGO HADDAD has the influence and atmosphere of great artists like Alan Jackson, George Strait, Johnny Cash, Dale Watson, Dwight Yoakam and Jim Lauderdale.

“ Everything makes more sense when you listen to a song on the radio by Merle Haggard, the poet of the common man ” explains Rodrigo Haddad who was in Nashville, TN, the US music city where the artist had the opportunity to be more involved with the segment and can live this whole environment with greater intensity.

During all these years, Rodrigo Haddad who was born in the capital of São Paulo has performed shows throughout the city and state. His music crossed the Southeast and reached the South of the country as well. He performs for several years at the largest Country Music festival in South America in San Pedro, Argentina and his albums have been played on radio in Europe, Mexico and the USA. In fact, it was in Nashville that Rodrigo Haddad performed at the CMA Music Festival, the largest festival of its kind, one of the most striking moments of his career.

Rodrigo Haddad has 6 albums released on digital platforms, there are more than 50 songs composed by the artist himself, songs about life, love, friendships, and stories lived by the artist himself. Some of these albums were recorded in Nashville with the great American musicians, a dream realized as he reports. “ Having the chance to have recorded in Nashville was one of the most remarkable experiences of my career ” and your fans and friends know it!

In 2007, ICMDAY, a Spanish Country Music organization, appointed Rodrigo Haddad as Country Music Ambassador for his stylish work around the world. Leddington Guitars is a small one man shop based in the historic city of Bath, UK, and is specialised in custom hand built guitars, cases, boutique picks and repair work.

Originally from Worcestershire, Leddington moved to Antwerp, Belgium in 2010 and quickly found himself co-founding a local Bluegrass group or two as well as studying at the world renowned CMB (Center for Musical Instrument Building) in Puurs. It was from this headlong foray into acoustic music and woodworking, along with his background in Fine-Arts that his keen sense of the visual and the aural became inseparably intertwined.

Many instruments later Leddington has moved back to his native UK and has developed a sonic sensibility that produces balanced and responsive guitars and puts particular emphasis on the way they play and feel. These instruments are built by a player, for players.

Aside from the primary acoustic function, Leddington also maintains a strong visual and yet minimal aesthetic that often opts for simple straight lines, uncomplicated appointments and classically balanced forms. This way the wood, which can often be dazzling enough, is allowed to speak for itself both visually and of course sonically.

Leddington's passion is to create hand built instruments that follow on from the American tradition of luthiery whilst at the same time adding a modern look and feel with custom designs and ideas. Matteo hails from the far-away island of Sicily, born in 1996 and raised outside Palermo, had his family relocated to the US, he might well be the best kept secret in the lineage of great Italian- American players like Zappa, Vai, Satriani, Di Meola, Petrucci, Gambale etc.

Back in the 70’s, his father Vincenzo Mancuso made a name for himself as gifted session player on the domestic scene; it was definitely him Matteo looked up to as a primary source of inspiration growing up. While still in high school (of music), he picked up classical guitar and transverse flute, it didn’t take long for everyone around to understand that a kid prodigy was blooming.
Before long, just turned 12 years of age, Matteo takes his first steps on stage at a local jazz festival and since then his acquaintance with live performances turns into confidence and develops through various line-ups and interactions with top local musicians, including a duo with his dad spanning the complexities of Django Reinhart’s repertoire as well as contemporary jazz classics.

Jon Liebman is a world-renowned bassist, composer, arranger, author and educator. He has played electric and acoustic bass in every imaginable setting, from jazz gigs and club dates to full-scale concerts in many of the world’s major performance venues. Jon has performed and/or toured with everyone from José Feliciano and Julio Iglesias to Amy Grant, Cleo Laine, Buddy DeFranco, The Fifth Dimension, Eartha Kitt, The Drifters, The Platters, The Coasters, and countless others, in addition to playing in the pit orchestras for dozens of Broadway shows, including Dreamgirls, Les Mis, Fiddler On The Roof, and Phantom Of The Opera. Grainne Duffy was born in Castleblayney, Co. Monaghan, Ireland and raised in a family of seven. As a schoolgirl she sang in her local choir and also in a family band with her sisters. The band was bred from their love of music, which Duffy accredits to her mother. Not having a television in their home when they were young, her mother instead allowed them to own a family record player, on which they all were encouraged to get a record on their individual birthday’s and Christmas. This broadened their interest in music and they began listening to artists such as Aretha Franklin, The Pretenders and The Rolling Stones. Around that time Grainne discovered Fleetwood Mac and the blues playing of Peter Green, whom she cites as one her main guitar influences. Previous to her solo career Grainne Duffy obtained a degree in music at NUI, Maynooth, Ireland and took part in session work singing with various bands across Italy and France.

Meg and Andrew met in 2019 at an open jam session. At the time, both had put pursuing music on hold while they juggled family responsibilities and time-consuming careers. Meg, an entertainment exec then in her mid-30s, was a self-described “car singer,” but came from a musical family. As a kid, she wrote poetry and passionately wrote down the lyrics to the songs she loved. Andrew has been writing and playing music since high school, but after college got sidetracked by an evolving career as an author, sustainable business strategist, and impact investor. As he neared his 50th birthday, he resolved to pursue music again.

Andrew and Meg’s first project, Ultrasound, a funk cover band, began to perform actively around New York City. A highlight was a benefit concert at Brooklyn Bowl, which found them performing Aerosmith and Run-DMC’s “Walk This Way,” with Meg laying into the Steven Tyler part alongside legendary Run-DMC member Darryl McDaniels. That experience sparked Meg and Andrew’s desire to write songs together. This was Meg’s first time writing and recording original music, and she was exploding with ideas, sending Andrew voice memos and lyric fragments. The two worked collaboratively and nurtured a rapport that reminds one of Tom Petty and Stevie Nicks, the Swell Season, or the xx.

This is the dawn of Twilight Muse. Contemplating their journey, Andrew says: “This partnership has been such an unexpected gift. I hope others are inspired by the idea that a creative pursuit and collaboration can come later in life.” Meg adds: “This calling came and I'm 100% in. It’s never too late to unleash the imagination.”

There’s no mistaking Austin band the Ransom Brothers’ major musical influence; those slide and twinned guitar riffs, fierce fiddle solos and bluesy, soul-infused melodies pay proud homage to the Allman Brothers, Marshall Tucker Band and other ’70s Southern rockers, though the band also pledges allegiance to red dirt, outlaw and outlier country, jam bands.

But it’s definitely their own musical chops and songwriting skills on display in each track of their debut album, Resurgence.

“Our goal has always been to be ourselves and write and play what inspires us,” says lead singer and guitarist Sean McHargue, who formed the band with fellow Texas State University graduate Daniel “Sal” Solis (guitars, mandolin). They were a duo when they came up with the name, inspired by Jimmy Stewart’s character in The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, but have since added bassist Phil Eckhardt, drummer Aaron English, fiddler John Thomas and keyboardist James Rodman.

“We all have our own styles and nobody tells anyone what to do; we just throw shit in the wok and see if it comes out crispy. It usually does,” says Solis.

But the blend of past and present on Resurgence is intended to serve as more than the band’s calling card: They also hope to reinvigorate some musical corners that have gone little stale.

Nili Brosh is part of a new generation of guitarists. Both a solo artist and a sidewoman, Nili currently plays with Danny Elfman, Cirque du Soleil, Dethklok, as well as her original band.

Born in Israel, raised in Massachusetts, and educated at Berklee College of Music, Nili has performed with Steve Vai, Paul Gilbert, Tony MacAlpine, Andy Timmons, Guthrie Govan/The Aristocrats, Stu Hamm, Jennifer Batten, Gretchen Menn, DragonForce, Jeff Loomis, Alphonso Johnson, and The Iron Maidens. Nili has also released three solo albums (Through The Looking Glass, 2010, A Matter of Perception, 2014, and Spectrum, 2019), the material from which she performs and gives clinics on.

Vince Francis, bassist for Sweden based Temple Hill Band, visits with The Trout about leaving his musical roots in America and moving to Sweden and forming a heavy metal band. Vince talks about his life growing up in Rochester, New York and moving to Los Angeles to check out the music scene there. Vince gave up his musical aspirations in America after he met and fell in love with a Swedish lady. Of course Vince didn’t speak the language and he was thousands of miles from his American home. He did what all good musicians do got a bass guitar from a friend and started seeking out musicians to start a band. Years later Vince, along with his other two band-mates, formed the Temple Hill Band that have recorded several tunes for the heavy metal music world to listen to and enjoy.

Formed with a mutual passion for pushing the boundaries of genre, and heavily influenced by the Grateful Dead and New Grass Revival, the members of Sicard Hollow grew up sick of existing institutions telling them what their music should sound like. Before they met in 2018, none of the members even considered playing bluegrass - Matt Rennick (violin) was working on electronic music, Will Herrin (mandolin/vocals) was playing guitar in rock bands, and King spent years as an artist without an art-form, searching for a home by pouring every bit of his sweat and heart into anything he was doing. Ezra and Beecher Prōch of the band Willow City grew up in a world of creativity, surrounded by art and music and whimsy. The Prōch family made their home in the Hill Country of Texas, but their peripatetic lifestyle opened the boys’ eyes to experiences most children only read about in books…in a sense, it was a wonderland. Alex from Kyiv, Ukraine visits with The Trout about what it's like to be a music creator while attempting to stay safe during an invasion. Alex (not his real name) is a creator of electronic music in the Ukraine. For the last several years he has composed several electronic music pieces that have been used in the gaming industry. Alex has had to move away from Kyiv (Kiev) to a safer area of his country and unfortunately, writing and producing music has taken a back burner as the war continues around him. A self taught music and music producer, Alex's music is unique and very moving.
