Mary welcomes back Don Veinot to discuss pastoring in the digital age: are pastors aware of the ways social media is shaping those in their care? One recent study reports that teens spend an astounding 10 hours every day on their cell phones, with tweens (ages 8-12) logging in at nearly 6 hours. Adults, on average, devote four hours and 25 minutes to scrolling. This means adults will spend over two months on their phones this year. When you consider that most Christians only spend a handful of hours each week worshiping, studying the bible, and in fellowship, we have to ask if we are being discipled more by our devices than anything else. In the 1970s even, what shaped youth was school, parents, community, perhaps church, and books and music; sometimes TV. But now capturing hearts and minds in these last days is a simple scroll away. Are we keeping up? How can the church counter any of its influence? Is it too late? A thoughtful conversation with a long-time apologist who loves the church.

Mary welcomes new guest Stephanie Potts to the podcast. She worked with the federal government as an intelligence analyst for 15 years and now works with Midwest Christian Outreach. She is passionate about evangelism and apologetics and discernment education. Her definitive book is “Social Justice and the Deification of Man: What You Need to Know When Talking to the Christian Left”. Today we take apart what seemed to be just another way “to do church” in the early part of this century and drag it over to it’s logical conclusion: the deification of man. While that might sound dramatic, it is absolutely what is and always was behind the door of the emergent church/emergence theology that dared to attempt to do plastic surgery on the bride of Christ by denying the need for the atonement, rethinking the gospel, and placing all power and authority for the end game of earth on man. Even though the Bible teaches something apocalyptically different, the doesn’t stop man from thinking that sin is merely all the ways society has let us down. How can Christians better respond to the left on this? Perhaps making fun of the No Kings approach isn’t the most helpful and yet it’s hard not to take that route. Mary welcomes back seasoned apologist Don Veinot of Midwest Christian Outreach to talk about “sycretism” and why the majority of evangelicals embrace it to some level or another. What is syncretism? Is it those dreadful “Co-Exist” bumper stickers, or something more sinister? Syncretism is the mixing of one faith/belief system with another, it is mixing two things that aren’t supposed to go together. Accepting parts of each, but denying the whole. But the gospel cannot be divided and conquered to make us more comfortable. However, syncretism is the natural, meaning carnal, response to the Gospel. Some reject the Gospel completely. Others want to accept only part of the Gospel, merging specific aspects of it to fit their own ideas. We give quite a few examples, some of which might surprise the listener. Then we look at deconstruction – what it is and isn’t. One would hope that the one that is disappointed with orthodoxy on any level actually looked deeply into what Christianity actually teaches and then made a sober decision. Or is it emotional, a response to either God or man letting them down? A fundamental hour with Don.

The world is so chaotic, and adding to the geopolitical insanity, there are countless voices and opinions presenting other ways to view everything. Exhausted yet? Maybe you are but don’t realize it. JB and Mary look at David the sweet Psalmist, and his declaration that what we really need is to draw near to Jesus – and drink of the living water He offers. David, and that deer, panted for the water during the most difficult times, and so should we – whether we are on the run from enemies, navigating apostasy in the church, watching the news about man’s inhumanity to man – all these things sap our strength. He is our peace, and He knows what will make for our peace: whatsoever is true, lovely, and praiseworthy. Let’s unplug and satisy that thirst. Have a long drink of cool water.

We talk about the disintegration of Portland and why it will never likely improve, but spread; we look at Communion America, a great delusion for the church; and Trump’s deal with Pfizer, delusion that began in 2020 and never really goes away. Why would he make a deal with such a corrupt and wicked corporation? And still another abortion pill goes to market. It just gets more wicked out there, but hallelujah, we have God’s Word: blessed is that one who doesn’t walk, stand, or sit with the wicked (Psalm 1) Homeward, saints!

And to say there is sorcery in the church, that is something many may not understand; but through the New Age and experientially-based Christianity, this has indeed become the case. Times ahead may get tougher, so we have to ask ourselves, are we standing firm on the foundation of truth?

Especially concerning are the moral compromises that blind the heart and mind of the one who disregards God’s warnings when we trespass His protective boundaries. Holly Pivec is an evangelical researcher of cults, sects, and new religious groups, such as the “New Apostolic Reformation” (NAR) movement. She has a master’s degree in Christian apologetics from Biola University in Southern California, where she attended and also worked. Holly and her family live in Fairbanks, Alaska.
Doug Geivett is a husband, father to two grown children, professor, author, and speaker. He has a Ph.D. in philosophy from USC and teaches at Biola University and Talbot School of Theology. Doug has written or edited several books and spoken on issues related to the New Apostolic Reformation, Christian apologetics, and the Christian life to audiences all over the world.
Is there a new reformation happening in the church? It depends on who you ask. The New Apostolic Reformation (NAR) is a popular and fast-growing new movement of Christians who emphasize signs and wonders, and teach that God is giving new revelation through new apostles and prophets. You are not alone because more than ever, you will get an eye-roll followed by a denunciation of some historical sort. And the pulpits are silent on yet again another thing. Mankind is prone to being deceived ever since the fall, but how can the average believer guard their hearts with all diligence when there are so many doctrines – some demonic – vying for our attention? Are some just ignoring that still, small voice? Are believers too trusting of anyone who calls themselves a pastor? All this and more with JB to continue to equip the church for dark days. We welcome back Russ Miller today and discuss the delusional aspect of our times on the subject of false Christs, one of the more sobering warnings in the New Testament. The bible tells us clearly who the Messiah is in detail. Jesus Himself walked the earth to witness to His people Israel and prophesy about His upcoming death and resurrection. When you add in the witness of the Apostles and particularly Peter and Paul throughout their epistle, there is ample opportunity to “flesh out” in our minds and hearts Who this Jesus is Who became sin for us. And yet, with the plethora of written testimony, people still get the wrong Jesus – a “false Christ” – and his followers are false Christians led on by false prophets. Why would anyone choose to believe in a false Christ? According to 2 Corinthians 11:3, our minds can readily be corrupted by our enemy, due to the fall – and we can start to be corrupted ourselves and believe lies. Not only must we test every spirit, but test ourselves, to see if we are in the faith. (1 Corinthians 13:5).

The teachings of NAR aren’t particularly new, considering the Latter Rain Movement of the 1940s and the Kansas City Prophets of the 1980s, but as with anything that the church refuses to be discerning about, it never goes away and just spreads, particularly in the computer/internet age. Mary Danielsen chats with Russ Miller of Creation, Evolution and Science Ministries (CESM) in the first half about how rampant deception begins with turning away from the simplicity of the true gospel. With so much biblical illiteracy in the church, more people at looking at fictional representations and “what is right in their own eyes” to make a Jesus in their own image. Using the text of 2 Corinthians 11:3-4, we learn of Paul’s concerns that his readers (including this generation) would find themselves beguiled and bewitched just as Eve was and their/our minds would be corrupted. We will look at some of the ways this can and will happen at an increasingly rapid rate. Are we willing to tell people that they “have the wrong Jesus” and explain what that means? It’s not just the cults, such as Mormonism, that have the wrong Jesus.
In the 2nd half of the podcast Mary will look at some headlines about a variety of issues we are facing here in early 2024.

Holly Pivec is an evangelical researcher of cults, sects, and new religious groups, such as the “New Apostolic Reformation” (NAR) movement. She has a master’s degree in Christian apologetics from Biola University in Southern California, where she attended and also worked. Holly and her family live in Fairbanks, Alaska.
Doug Geivett is a husband, father to two grown children, professor, author, and speaker. He has a Ph.D. in philosophy from USC and teaches at Biola University and Talbot School of Theology. Doug has written or edited several books and spoken on issues related to the New Apostolic Reformation, Christian apologetics, and the Christian life to audiences all over the world.
Is there a new reformation happening in the church? It depends on who you ask. The New Apostolic Reformation (NAR) is a popular and fast-growing new movement of Christians who emphasize signs and wonders, and teach that God is giving new revelation through new apostles and prophets. But is this biblical Christianity?
In Counterfeit Kingdom, apologists and NAR experts Holly Pivec and Douglas Geivett show how the NAR’s key tenets distort the gospel, twist the Scriptures, are influenced by New Age practices, and lead faithful Christians to shipwreck their faith. Holly Pivec is an evangelical researcher of cults, sects, and new religious groups, such as the “New Apostolic Reformation” (NAR) movement. She has a master’s degree in Christian apologetics from Biola University in Southern California, where she attended and also worked. Holly and her family live in Fairbanks, Alaska.
Doug Geivett is a husband, father to two grown children, professor, author, and speaker. He has a Ph.D. in philosophy from USC and teaches at Biola University and Talbot School of Theology. Doug has written or edited several books and spoken on issues related to the New Apostolic Reformation, Christian apologetics, and the Christian life to audiences all over the world.
Is there a new reformation happening in the church? It depends on who you ask. The New Apostolic Reformation (NAR) is a popular and fast-growing new movement of Christians who emphasize signs and wonders, and teach that God is giving new revelation through new apostles and prophets. But is this biblical Christianity?

In yet another violation of biblical principles, the progressive United Methodist Church (UMC) voted to make “Reverend” Cedrick Bridgeforth, an openly gay man, bishop at their official meeting last week. Of course, they did. But if church rules and Bible doctrines no longer matter, why have them?
Sadly, more churches seem to be minimizing or reinterpreting Scripture. These deceivers often emphasize (code words alert!) diversity, equity, inclusion, tolerance, and strive to be ‘welcoming.’ It’s true Jesus welcomed sinners, but He also told them to repent, obey His commandments, and to go and sin no more!
After being elected, Bridgeforth told those gathered at the Western Jurisdiction meeting that he was “grateful to God Almighty” and “to my husband, Christopher.” But wait a minute. The UMC Book of Discipline forbids ordaining ‘practicing homosexuals.’ But rules are meant to be broken, right? Not if Jesus is your final authority. He is the One who created mankind and all things. He ordained and defined (natural) marriage between one man and one woman (Mark 10:6-10).
The Book of Jude appeals to Christians to stand and fight against attacks on the faith. See if you notice any similarities to today’s church as Jude warned first century Christians saying:
For certain people have crept in unnoticed, those who were long beforehand marked out for this condemnation, ungodly persons who turn the grace of our God into indecent behavior and deny our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ. Jude 1:4
Deception, godlessness, and false teachers are nothing new.
Don’t miss the fact that a man in an open same-sex “marriage” was still elected to the office of bishop in the Methodist Church. Bridgeforth plans to “chart new ground.” He served as the California-Pacific Conference’s director of innovation and communication and received 73 votes out of 93 ballots cast. For those keeping score, that’s a majority.
It’s important to note that during the last decade, the splintered Methodist denomination finally split. Biblical Christians were tired of compromise, LGBTQ policies, women pastors, political correctness, and division over abortion and marriage. So after years of debate over holding the biblical line or accommodating sin, conservatives officially parted ways with the UMC and launched its Global Methodist Church.
Former UMC General Conference delegate, John Lomperis of the Institute on Religion & Democracy, said Bridgeforth’s promotion exhibits “further direct defiance of the UMC’s official rules, which is increasingly becoming normalized.” He adds:
“Bishops are entrusted with the sacred responsibility of upholding and enforcing our church’s doctrinal and moral standards. When the bishops are so openly breaking these standards, then this is a true ‘inmates running the asylum’ situation,”
According to the Christian Post, Loperis remarked about a female bishop also elected by the UMC, that she even refused to say if she believes in the physical resurrection of Jesus Christ. Apparently [she] does not believe in “basic biblical doctrine about His incarnation.” This is stunning.
Plenty of people mention God or even claim to believe in Him, but does your faith translate over into your life? Where’s the fruit? Do you obey the commandments? Anyone can say they are Christian and millions do, but it’s apparent they do not really follow Jesus and live out their faith according to the Bible. They are man-pleasers rather than God-pleasers (Gal. 1:10).
I think we know the sobering answers to these questions. It is reflected in the moral rot and decay of culture and the infestation of social justice and liberal ideologies into American churches.
It’s important to understand the historical decline. In 2016, the United Methodist Church (Western Jurisdiction) appointed the first openly lesbian bishop, and the election was unanimous! Karen Oliveto’s ordination was later deemed invalid by the Church’s Judicial Council a year later, but that didn’t matter; she remains in her position to this day.
The day before the 2016 UMC convention in Oregon, the “Reverend” Laura Young, a 48-year-old Methodist pastor in Ohio joined over a hundred United Methodist Church clergy members who came out as gay, lesbian or bisexual. Young stated at the time:
“I feel lighter already. I can be a better pastor and a better person when I can be my full self, living in the light and with integrity.”
In 2019, the UMC voted – by a slim margin – to uphold the church’s bans on ordaining LGBTQ clergy and performing same-sex weddings. However, that vote was disregarded by many progressive leaders within the UMC who rebelled and continued to commission openly gay clergy as well as officiate same-sex weddings.
The Bible warns us not to align with them and also says God will not be mocked. He never changes and neither does His Word which teaches you will reap what you sow, either sin and corruption or righteousness and everlasting life (Isaiah 40:8, Gal. 6:7-8).
Churches have been divided on politics for over a century, but the greater issue is division over clear, biblical, foundational doctrines and teachings. By the way, the (formerly) United Methodist Church is the third-largest Protestant denomination in the USA. Don’t think this couldn’t happen at your church.
The Apostle Paul said the Holy Spirit lives in believers and we are temples of the living God. He writes:
Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness? …Therefore “Come out from among them And be separate, says the Lord. Do not touch what is unclean, And I will receive you.” 2 Corinthians 6:14, 17
How about you or your church? Do you have a decision to make?
For those in seeker-sensitive “churches” who no longer adhere to or believe what the Bible teaches, it doesn’t matter what they say. Christ the King will return as promised, sin will be judged, and righteousness, holiness, grace and truth will prevail.
