Took the Californa Zephyr train from Glenwood Springs - Grand Junction. Got talking to a YouTuber named Matthew Dalke, and an Amish man.

Day 33
Good start, flooded trails, big heat, scenic roads and alot of traffic due to a Kevin Costner movie being filmed where I was cycling past.
Made it to Moab, lovely place, badly need of some TLC and taking another day off here to recoup the body.
Also spoke with my warmshowers host in Dillon named Alex Cole, cool guy who’s done alot of cycling, is renovating his house and works for apple.

Day 33

Big birthday day today for me, big day on the saddle, all down hill for 128km. Nice engagements with strangers, lots of closed bike paths due to melting snow and making it to Gleenwood Springs, thanks for all the support so far!
And spoke with my warmshowers host Kori Beyer in Idaho Springs. About work, her time in Japan and South America, her unbelievable home and great words to live by.
Nice day, from Idaho Springs to Dillon. All up hill, nice engagements with strangers first but now friends. Getting over the continental divide which is 3’660metres above sea level. Thin air, cold but rewarding.
I also spoke with a friend Tesia Lin in Denver. We discussed places she’s lived in and her studies at the moment in Fort Collins.
Wet miserable morning, few homeless people around, nothing but cycling up hill, nice chat with German man Thomas along the way. Pizza in BeauJo’s and a monster cycle… up hill to finish, lovely warmshowers host house, very Grand Design feel to it.
Also spoke with my friend Anna Cornille in Denver all things good about the place, the reason she moved there and words to live by.
Days off, catching up with the Stanton family. Got introduced to disc golf, pickle ball and went to a soft ball game. Got the bike fixed up, met up with two friends whom I meet along my travels over the years. And speak about the journey ahead through the Rocky mountains.
Also spoke to my cousins Marty and Jennifer Stanton whom hosted me in Centennial. Talk about life, favourite moments in life and thanked them for the hospitality.
Leaving the lovely Limon and the Bontrager family, heavy legs, Colorado has aggressive speedy drivers. Plenty of breaks, and a good shower of rain, loads of moths around and arriving in Centennial to my relations house.
Also spoke with the wonderful woman that is Ellie Bontrager in Limon who hosted me, rescued me. We talk about how she ended up in Limon coming from Florida originally, her interest in music, her visits to Ireland and some words to live by.
Late enough start, doddled too much, lunch bought in Stratton for me. Difficult gravel roads, strong head winds, attempted hitchhiking, a friendly state trooper and amazing Warmshowers host whom came to save me.

Late start, roasting heat, biggest Easel in the world. A new hat, left Kansas and entered into Colorado state. Thrilled and sad and feeling lonely not being able to share times with others. Trouble in Burlington with accommodation, plan for the next few days, into the last third of the journey.
Massive day of milage, Downs to Colby.On Highway 24 for the most of the day, gradual hills, flash showers, a nap, and nice encounter with a stanger in Hoxie, cycling in the dark, a lightening show. And I spoke with Shane Sword from Hoxie whom runs the store ‘Red’s’ a very kind, and inspiring man whom hasn’t had it easy. We talk like, America, and words to live by… and ice cream.
One of the highlight days of the journey so far, meeting Ron and Linda Foster, the great people of Miltonvale.Lovely cycle towards Cawker City, seeing the world’s biggest bail of twine and getting help to find accommodation from a stranger named Linda Miller in Downs Kansas.
Easy day leaving Manhattan, too much coffee, hot weather, dusty roads, meeting Ron and giving him a hand in his bike shop and discussing a previous Warmshowers guest they had called Monika Wagner.Spoke with my hosts Ron and Linda Foster about live, moving around, cycling trips they’ve done and the good work they both do in the community of Miltonvale with their bike shop.
Good day, left Topeka to Manhattan, Kansas. Lots of fields and light winds, huge petrol station, expensive deodorant and closed roads. Got walking on the train tracks and back on the road.Spoke to Carol Sevin, originally from North Carolina but now living in Manhattan Kansas.
Few bits done and seen in Kansas, relaxing time to myself. Post office, late start and big heat. Rolling hills. A nice stranger Carol whom gave me water, and a stranger allowing me to camp in their back garden, working towards the next goal of the journey and days and time left.
Tinkering with the bike, getting the train to Kansas, fixing the bike with a new wheel and a few other bits. Meeting my Warmshowers host, a folk concert, BBQ meat, Boulevard Brewery and beers by the fire pit.I also spoke with my host Richie Wolfe about life, his cycling trips he’s done himself and words to live by.
1/2 Marathon walking the bike, some interactions along the way. No room for the bike on the train, beers and pizza, patience wearing thin with a young fella in the motel, tubes patched and washing done for another week. Thanks and acknowledgments for all the support and messages.

Early start at my hosts house with a lovely breakfast. Monotonous cycle throwing the hand up at times. Unknown family in Colorado. Amazing dessert and cold showers. Tired enough but the chickens were not.Had a chat with Sean Lowery from St. Louis, sound sound host, tour of the city and pizza and beers for the night.
Slow day, late start. Leaving the wonderful St Louis, Katy Trail from now until Kansas, Pizza is Mathasville. Boys dressed as girls and fussy customers.Spoke at length with my Bloomington host Kellie Williams about life, figuring out teaching wasn’t for her very quickly, her love of cycling, the amount of places she’s been in America and her words to live by is “don’t wait”.
Big day of milage, Springfield to St Louis, country roads, bike trails a puncture in Litchfield, the amazing man that is Don from Rebuilt Bikesshop, arriving in St Louis and getting the tour from my Warmshowers host Sean, stranger buying me ice cream and pizza and beer in the Irish corner bar.Also spoke with fellow Killasser Swinford man Tom Horkan in Chicago. We talked all things life, reasons for moving to Chicago, a day that sticks out in his mind and how he’s settled into the sports there aswell.
Lovely stay in Bloomington, cycling on the old route 66, big dream of mine, alot of engagements with strangers along the way, catch up with one of my siblings and exploring Abraham Lincoln’s home town of Springfield.Also on this episode I chatted with the legend that is Sinead Gallagher from Tipperary that’s based in Chicago. We talk all things Chicago, how time is flying, her favourite place in America other than Chicago and the amount of J1’ers she’s seen and met over the years being involved with McBrides GAA club in Chicago.
Back at it after a weeks break, feeling a little demotivated, too ambitious milage back after the break, train involved.And I got to speak with Tom Tully Snr and his son Matthew Tully. Little family affair with relations of mine, we talk all things Chicago, life in general, their Law firm Tully&Associates and works to live by, very honoured to have gotten the opportunity to speak with both of them while visiting Chicago.

Stressed start, fast milage, randomly meeting Warmshowers hosts in La Porte, fellow bike packer Jeremy, tough last 15km along lakeshore drive and reflection of the journey so far, rest, and the next leg of the journey.
Woke up by the storm and rain, got up and had a big breakfast with the locals. Some hills ahead with the wrong extra warm outfit, headed west on the road and two cars nearly crashed into me, very close call. Fine houses along the way belonging to the Amish people.Slow puncture on the bridge and all my stuff got into the river, very stressful. Got to a petrol station and got all the food and drink I could have, starved. Lovely help offer over the phone by Noreen, so nice! Got to the Warmshowers hosts, lovely couple who cycled around the world. Down to the last tube, after two tubes got punctured, what a relief.

Got drinking water that had a rank taste and smell of rotten eggs, nearly got sick.Had some food and a few cans of coke to wash off the taste of the water and got cycling again into Indiana. Some shouting got me nervous but the police put me at ease. Arrived at Angola at my Warmshowers host and camped in the garden was chatting about nothing around the fire. Two days away from Chicago, come on!
Was on a bike trail for a long time, no hills or pushing the bike, wish all of USA was like that!Some barns made of wood and with stars on them, some blue and gold ones, must find out what they mean. Arrived at Toledo fine, struck by heavy traffic and had to cycle on the footpath.Interview with Warmshowers hosts Howard and Sarah, so lovely and generous. Talking and served food, didn’t play any bridge though.
Left through Martin Luther King drive, Ireland’s garden on the way lovely to see. On to the lake front, windy but nice, went to the bike shop, was done and dusted in 40min. Irish pub for some grub. Talented musicians around.Landed at the Warmshowers Amanda and Josh’s house in Cleveland and set up the tent. Lovely couple and children.

Speak about my rest day in Pittsburgh on MAY DAY IT’S MAY DAY.Exploring downtown, badly in need of a new back wheel. Day 9, tough day, rain, cold, wet, little engagement with people, tough cycling on busy roads and possibly a lift to Cleveland.And I also spoke with Lowell and Ellen Satre my Warmshowers hosts whom have cycled hundreds of thousands of miles all over the world, been to every state in America, and Lowell has written two books. Two amazing interesting individuals.
Tired, cold and heavy. Made it to Pittsburgh safe and sound after a rainy night in the tent. Walking the bike up the hills for a few KMs, not as many downhills after. Shazam drinking up my phone battery. Weird couple smoking their head off and asking all the questions.Interviewing my Warmshowers kind host Amy Roth, had pizza and drink ready for me, such a lovely person.
Poor breakfast for $100, only two slices of bread allowed. Slow start, chain is rusty and bike is heavy as are my legs. Start and stop at every 6KM.Amish shop, pretzels and peanuts for cheap. Signed the book as requested. Had to cancel Warmshowers in Pittsburg and camping at Donegal, Pennsylvania tonight.
A lot of me time, a lot of rain. Little interactions with people, passing the time talking to myself, summarising my thoughts about the journey so far and how I’m feeling.Also spoke with my warmshowers host Stuart Rosner while staying in Frederick, a great guy whom has had an interesting life, plenty of cycling across America, a talented soccer player in his day and his favourite memory of glacier’s National park.
Good start and excellent advice from my Warmshowers host to get on the C&O Canal Trail, away from traffic and back at one with nature. First night camping and plan for the next few days.Also, spoke with Chris George my Warmshowers host in Washington, Chris is a top guy and his wife Dani were excellent to me, well travelled and all round great people.

As first days goes, it couldn’t have gone any better. Forgetfully with the ferry times. Andrea from Costa Rica in a cafe, lovely greenway, dodgey Philadelphia area’s. The Rocky steps and torrential rain. Also a little interview with Sligo woman Catarina Boland, we discuss her time in New York, her place of work. Things she misses from Ireland and her favourite day in the states so far.
Intro episode to the new Tully Travels podcast. I’m planning on cycling across USA. Starting in New York and finishing in Los Angeles. Just an insight into the journey, plans, route, worries and other bits and pieces. What I’m hoping for along the way aswell as how I plan to use Warm Showers cycling forum which hosts cyclist aswell as having a guest join me from time to time on the podcast.

Early tiring start, on the ferry, alone with my thoughts, arrived in Malta and checked into a place. Good food, Irish bar, lots of support and kind messages from people. Thank you all.
Grand day overall, nice views, some hills, terrible drivers. Difficulty with the language again, bit fed up of Italy as a whole.
Early start, shockingly bad roads along with drivers, on the euro velo path but wasn’t supposed to be. Train involved, need to average 125km a day for the rest of the week, working ladies.
Good start, busy train. Pompeii ruins, a lot of walking and tourists, sunset, reminiscing over the journey so far. Looking forward to a big and possibly final week.
Wet day, spinning around Naples, shrine of Maradona, stadium with two latchaco’s of security men! Low battery, soaked, pizza, possibly Pompei tomorrow.
Randomly meeting a friends sister in Rome, rain landed, train to Naples, chaos traffic, the heavens opened, nice hostel, good food, exhausted after 43 days on the go.
Good start, people queue skipping, the Vatican, Napoli Pizza isn’t nice, walking tour, Irish stew and a pint of special, haircut and cards against humanity.
Not feeling it today, train to Rome, Mexican standoff with a curtain, sound hostel! Robbery for pints at €7, fist into the mouth lad makes an appearance.
Quiet day, nothing too exciting, Guinness hoodie, Pisa, looking forward to the finish line.
Early start, bad nights sleep. Ups and downs, lovely seaside towns. Fully booked hostel, cycling in the dark, 3km of a hike with the bike to end the day.
Expensive pints, modern hostels, Milan, packed train and a French lad whom wouldn’t let me sleep.
Productive day, Cameron the Canadian Sparkie Policeman, tight roads, Monte Carlo, San Remo, looking back over the journey so far.
Leaving Marseille, city traffic, nice breaks/food. Shortcuts, massive park, experiencing fear, wild hogs, making it to Cannes, old Melbourne friend, pints of Kilkenny.

Very tiring day, alot going on between fishermen, wind surfing and horses running about. The lad from the rave, Marseille and it’s vibe.
