Welcome to The Pear Podcast. P.E.A.R. = Peers Elevating Awareness and Rapport. This podcast was designed to empower students and inspire action through testimonials and words from local experts. We are a group of students sharing one goal: to raise awareness of targeted violence, misinformation, and disinformation against minority groups and members.
Due to the sensitive nature of our primary subject, targeted violence, viewer discretion is advised.
Welcome to The Pear Podcast, a new audio journey into misinformation, disinformation, discrimination, and more topics of concern within Iowa State University. Student Sarah Sheets shares her experiences as a white-passing, AAPI woman within everyday student interactions and the Greek community. She also brings attention to places of inaction on campus and how the university can better support minority groups that face constant discrimination.
After, hosts Derek Jones and Grace Johnson define targeted violence and incidences around the United States. Last, they relay resources on Iowa State's campus, information from other support groups, and ways to take action.
Derek Jones, a public relations student and co-host of the podcast at Iowa State University, shares his personal struggles as an adopted Asian American. ISU Director of Multicultural Success for the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Arnold Woods, discusses his role within the college, how it helps students of color, resources for university individuals to expand their knowledge on biases, misinformation, disinformation, and more.
Student interviewers Grace Johnson and Derek Jones sit down with ISU Greenlee School of Journalism and Mass Communication professor, Dr. Novotny Lawrence, to discuss accurate identification and intervention methods for targeted violence.
Vanessa Kime, a graduate of ISU, explains her experiences as a multicultural and BIPOC student scholar. After being in an accelerated and welcoming program before fall classes began, she credits the university for her success during school and post-graduation.
In the second episode of the pear podcast, we dive into how misinformation and disinformation can have a negative impact on the spread of targeted violence. Our guests include Professor Michael Bugeja from the ISU Greenlee School of Journalism and Mass Communication and student Thomas Tobin.
