Stuffing Around

No one at Stuff Magazine loves video games as much as Max Milella and Nick Cowen. So rather than jabbering behind the water cool, they've elected to take their chattering and make it audible.

Join them as they delve into the weird world of video game news, reviews and general musing about what we're all doing mashing buttons in front of our TV screens.

It's been a long journey folks, but here we are: the final episode.

In this week's episode Nick and Max discuss some more Blizzard news (oh boy), as well as the new Elden Ring gameplay demo, which looks phenomenal. Nick's also been a little busy, looking at the new Call Of Duty title and tooling around in Forza Horizon 5. Max has been playing something with a little more legacy wear-and-tear: Morrowind. And he's loving it.

And that's all she wrote, folks. Thanks for joining us for the past few months. It's been real.

We've got a couple of trailers to discuss this episode. First up, Tom Holland is looking promising in the new Uncharted trailer, though Nick doesn't entirely see he appeal of prequels. Then, Halo Infinite's new trailer shows off some awesome open-world gameplay, a few new mechanics, and a full-blown grappling hook.

Nick's also been playing a lot of Back 4 Blood of late, and thinks it might just have the stamina to be the Left 4 Dead successor it wants to be.

Max has been playing an interesting little battle royale title, called Hunt: Showdown, where your biggest threat isn't guns. It's monsters.

EA Sports's football juggernaut FIFA may not be called FIFA for very much longer depending on how negotiations between the gaming giant and world soccer's governing body go in the near future. On top of that, Rockstar is releasing Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy - Definitive Edition soon, which comprises GTA III, GTA: Vice City and GTA: San Andreas, three of the best open-world games ever made - there, we said it.

Nick has also been playing Far Cry 6 recently and while he's of the opinion that it's an impeccably well-made game and fans of this series shouldn't hesitate to pick up a copy, he's also convinced that it doesn't have much to entice players who grew tired of the FC gaming loops some time ago. He and Max deep dive into the reasons why this is.

On top of that, Max has been playing the original Devil May Cry, which even though it shows its age somewhat, still holds up very well. There are few games that can hold a candle to this one, in which kicking ass and looking cool have always been the orders of the day.

In a week where the news has been rather thin, Max picks up some news sure to delight Kingdom Hearts fans (we know nothing about this franchise) and Nick would like to hold a moment of silence for Agent; Rockstar's secret agent adventure, announced all the way back in 2007 (Max was six-years-old at the time) is officially no longer a going concern.

Nick has also been playing a couple of detective games. LA Noire was released all the way back on the Xbox 360 and PS3 and while it has a couple of peccadilloes it holds up pretty well. Players take on the role of an LAPD cop working his way around the seedy underbelly of 1940s Los Angeles and while some of its aspects feel dated, the story and characters make it a game worth playing today.

Released more recently, Lost Judgement has several issues and they extend beyond some of its hokey mechanics. The story of this Yakuza-series spin-off sequel centers on school bullying and, while some aspects are compelling, there is a lot here that may raise hackles. Have a listen and see if you agree.

Nintendo held a DIrect reveal and Max is over the moon that new Monster Hunter Rise content is arriving, Bayonetta 3 has been announced and there's a post-apocalyptic Kirby game on the cards. Duncan is decidedly cool on the whole affair, but the idea of a Chocobo kart racer from Square Enix is in the offing raised his quizzical eyebrow.

There's a new Super Mario movie in the pipeline and, well, after the last one that dropped, one could be forgiven for recoiling in horror. This one seems to be animated and boasts a rather strong cast, so who knows, maybe it'll be (gulp) good.

FIFA 22 is out and is currently being kicked up and down the street over - wait for it - FUT. This is rather curious since FUT has been baked into FIFA for years and it's kind of interesting that critics have chosen this moment to criticise EA Sports's football franchise for charging players more real-world money for a mode in a game sold at full price, since, hey, that's what's always happened with FUT.

Away from the news, Max has been battling with Halo 2. It's been causing him an awful lot of grief, but he did choose to play it on Heroic difficulty, so maybe he was asking for it.

Happy public holiday! We're sorry that we couldn't bring you better news but the Activision/Blizzard debacle keeps on trucking. This week, the head of legal buggered off, the company's CEO was subpoenaed and Overwatch 2 lost a rather crucial team player.

Away from all this horridness, Nick was lucky enough to chat to the folks developing Far Cry 6, and wouldn't you know it, they're deviating somewhat from the usual Ubisoft line that games made by the company aren't political. Nick also deep dives into the world the game inhabits and how it stacks up against its real-world inspiration.

Max, for his part, has been playing Ori & The Blind Forest, and while he's been enjoying it immensely, it did make him storm to his room and slam the door at one stage... just like Nick's 11-year-old stepdaughter did.

Nick is back and he and Max pick through the bones of the recent PlayStation Showcase. There were some quite drool-worthy titles on display including the new God Of War, Spiderman 2, Gran Turismo 7, an Alan Wake remaster and Deathloop - which is currently out and reviewing through the roof. Expect a review on the site soon. Also expect Nick to complain that he can't play it on an Xbox just yet.

He has, however, been playing Aliens: Fireteam Elite and while it may be exactly what some players want - a game in which you can blast through hordes of Xenomorphs with a pulse rife - Nick is a little disappointed. Have a listen and see if you agree - or disagree.

Max is joined by Stuff's newest recruit, Duncan and while the news isn't exactly thick on the ground, there is an Alan Wake Remaster in the pipeline courtesy of Epic Games and the Nintendo Online Service is adding a couple of games from way back when.

In other news, Sega has declared 2021 to be the year of Sonic The Hedgehog, who incidentally is 30 years old this year. To celebrate their spiky mascot's birth year, the publisher is bringing out several ports of his earlier adventures.

There's quite a bit of news to get through including a new No More Heroes from Suda 51 and the fourth Skate entry landing on PC amongst other things

There are no new games to review this week so Max and Nick have been hammering away at their back catalogues. Max is diving into the first three Halo games - the Master Chief trilogy as it were - and Nick's been scrubbing the landscapes of Medieval England and Ireland in Assassin's Creed: Valhalla. At some point the conversation veers into narcotics in video games - yes, this was a weird one.

The Activision Blizzard debacle won't go away, but luckily QuakeCon has been and gone with some rather decent news and GamesCom is in full swing so Max and Nick have something to talk about that won't make listeners queasy.

On top of that, Nick has been playing Twelve Minutes a very intriguing point-and-click thriller set in a never-ending time loop. Boasting a star-studded cast, lovely presentation and a mind-bending story that manages to stick the landing, Twelve Minutes is a tight puzzle box that should appeal to players looking for respite from the usual Triple A fare. Seriously, check it out - if you're on Game Pass you don't even need to buy it.

Welcome to the 30th episode! This podcast is now officially older than Max, who has brought his guitar and attempted to create a new intro (it didn't work).

In the news, there was a Pokemon online announcement Max has devoured and Nick is slightly ambivalent about. Beyond that Nick has been playing up a storm. He's dived deep into the new Assassin's Creed Valhalla DLC, The Siege Of Paris and spent quite a bit of time in Hades - which is superb, by the way. He also took time out to play Back 4 Blood and is slightly concerned that it may not live up to the legacy of Left 4 Dead.

More people have left Blizzard, Idris Elba is playing Knuckles in the upcoming Sonic: The Hedgehog film (yes, really) and Assassin's Creed: Valhalla's new DLC, The Siege Of Paris has dropped. That's all the news that's fit to print.

Max, however, has been playing the new Back 4 Blood closed beta and he give his impressions on Turtle Rock Studio's new four-player co-op zombie shooter. Since Nick is as old as the hills, he played Left 4 Dead and Left 4 Dead 2 back in the day and they have their DNA's running through Back 4 Blood. The pair of them compare notes on how the new apocalypse compares to the old one and what its chances are of being a success.

The Blizzard 'frat bro' culture and resultant lawsuit continues to depress, so Nick and Max have decided to take a look back at 2021 and the games they've been playing in order to feel better about themselves.

In among the highlights are Monster Hunter: Rise, The Ascent, Hitman 3 and the latest Guilty Gear. They didn't mention Resident Evil: Village just to annoy an erstwhile colleague.

This week is a bit of a Ying/Yang.

News has emerged that the Blizzard 'frat bro' culture is worse than what was previously reported and (as a far lesser problem with the world at large) the rampant hacking on Titanfall 2's servers has seen a sad goodbye from Nick.

But it's not all doom and gloom: there's a new Pokemon game on the horizon and Max has been playing The Ascent - a cyberpunk game that everyone really should check out. Its story may not set the world alight but its mechanics and presentation are superb. It's enough to prompt Max to try out cyberpunk literature, which he previously had no time for, which is saying something.

It's a bit of weird week for gaming news; Netflix has confirmed it's getting into games and that its first efforts will be in the mobile space and Skyward Sword lands on the Switch. On a more serious note, a lawsuit has been filed in California against Activision Blizzard over what has been called 'frat boy culture' and sexual harassment in the work space. Max and Nick pick through these topics, starting with the most serious, so trigger warnings abound.

As far as playing games goes, Nick has been rinsing Greedfall's side-missions and came across a bug that sent him into a fit of rage, and Max has been playing a game called The Ascent, which he can't talk too much about because the embargo hasn't lifted, but he can point listeners in the direction of its magnificent trailer.

In a fraught week for many South Africans, Nick and Max hope to bring some levity. PlayStation had a state of play this week and two items that stood out were a new Judgement game and Deathloop, and thanks to the pedigree of the studios involved in these titles, the boys are very much looking forward to them.

Nick has finished off Watch Dogs Legion's new DLC Bloodline and (shockingly) found Aiden Pearce quite fun to be around, and he's been playing Greedfall, a fantasy RPG with a rather sly commentary on the evils of colonialism. Max, for his part, has been deep in Guilty Gear Strive, which he says is a fantastic fighter that both the hardcore and the newbie camps should really give a go.

The podcast once again takes place in the basement of a house that Max is looking after this month, so please forgive the echoes and the crackling of fire in the background - hey they had to stay warm!

There's a new Robocop game that's been announced (hooray!) and a new Assassin's Creed game that's been announced but that will be a 'games as a service' release (boo!). Whether the former will be as good as the 80s film that spawned it is up for debate, as is whether the latter will be any good or a wallet-gouging exercise.

On top of that, Nick has been playing The Olympic Games Tokyo 2021 The Official Video Game (that's quite a mouthful) and Max is dug in deep in the Elder Scrolls Online's most recent expansion, Blackwood - he says it's very good.

Nick and Max go through this week's rather thin news cycle, which includes Remedy's superb Control getting a multiplayer spin-off and a big budget sequel. There were also a couple of acquisitions this week, with Sony nabbing Housemarque (the developer behind the superb Returnal) and Konami picking up Bloober Team (who developed Observer and Blair Witch, so here's hoping they're given something to do with Silent Hill).

Nick has been playing and reviewing the utterly bonkers Scarlet Nexus and even though he has something of an aversion to JRPG's, this one struck some very positive notes with him. Imagine Devil May Cry and Mass Effect set in a Final Fantasy-esque world and you're starting to get the picture

Nick moved house this week so the podcast has the odd quip from the Hadadas outside. Whether they are impressed by Scarlet Nexus is unknown at this stage.

Max and Nick pick through the bones of the E3 hangover and address the 'always-on-connection' debate that has recently been kick-started again. Nick's cat broke his internet connection this week so he has more than a couple of things to say about it.

On top of that, Max is still playing The Elder Scrolls Online and the pair of them share thought on the nature of MMO's, whether one has time for more than one game of this type and whether or not Max will be getting his hands on the Imperial Edition of the game. This could lead to violence...

E3 has come and gone leaving much news, announcements and gaming promises in its wake. Max and Nick pick apart offerings from Ubisoft and Microsoft and see what tantalising the pair offered at the virtual expo.

E3 approaches and with it, the gaming news cycle falls silent as every publisher and developer keep their powder dry. That being said, Max and Nick delve into what one may expect from he world's biggest gaming expo and take a look at the fact God Of War's sequel has been delayed.

Nick has been playing Necromunda: Hired Gun - a game with amazing lore and clunky mechanics - and Max has been playing Furi - a game with amazing mechanics and not much lore. It's an interesting Ying/Yang this week.

Abrams has confirmed (kind of) that wheels are now in motion for a film based on Portal - which if you haven't played it, do so immediately - and Netflix seems to be getting into the video games business (although details on how it plans to go about this are thin on the ground).

On top of that, Max has been playing Biomutant, which he describes as 'baby's first dystopia' and Nick finally wrapped up Wrath Of The Druids, the first DLC pack for the really rather good Assassin's Creed: Valhalla.

In this week's episode, we talk about Skull and Bones being delayed once again, Nick takes on a Tinder-inspired mission in Watch Dogs: Legion and Brad gushes about how much he loves Pokémon photography in New Pokémon Snap. It's a great show, join us for some banter, won't you?

IT'S FINALLY HERE! Brad can't stop talking about how much he loved Resident Evil: Village. It's the perfect combination of action and horror that tickles him in all the right places. On the other hand, Max is delving deep into the visceral terror of Dead Space. The latest game to feature in the "Why haven't you played this?" category, Max explains that while he's enjoying his time with Isaac Clarke, it's... well, scary. Man doesn't like scary. Fair enough.

As for news... well, there wasn't any. Still, rather be playing games, right?

Well... there's still not all that much to talk about and Max was away studying for a university exam or something (I know, where's the work ethic?). Thus, Nick and Brad opted to talk about the notion that consumers should buy new IPs at full price on launch day and how ridiculous that idea is. Then we dive deep into Resident Evil 7, which Brad has been replaying to prepare for Resident Evil: Village.

Oh, there's also a stunning revelation at the end of this episode. It's rage inducing and I nearly quit the show. You'll know it when you hear it, trust me.

Nick on the other hand has been hiding in dark corners in Doom 3: VR which is... fine. As for Brad, he's been playing not much of anything right now. He's a busy boy, is the thing.
