As creatives, we can look at AI in two ways. One, we can feel threatened, freaked out, and worry about the need for human beings, or two, we can decide to run ahead and make our corner of the world better because of this tool.

I mean, I guess there is a third option where we can use AI and still be slightly scared of it (I’m not going to lie, that's me) but let's just ignore that one😜.

The COOL thing about it, regardless of where you stand, is it can give us TIME back to be more creative. Yes, AI can help us be more creative. And I am not talking about it being creative FOR us, rather, it can systemize things that take our time, so we can have more time to do what lights us up.

Today I had on the incredible Anthony Lee, an A.I. Marketer Guy with a passion for designing A.I.-powered business automations, developing A.I. software solutions for Amazon sellers, and creating frameworks for behavioral marketing. Today I connected with Esteban Serrano, a seasoned music television producer/director with 20 years experience, who has worked on iconic shows like TRL and MTV Raps and presented Hip Hop to audiences in new and innovative ways. In this conversation, he shares with us about knowing the value that you add, understanding the gravity of the moment, and why there is no better path than the one that God has for you.

This conversation is unlike any I have shared before. I sat down with my dad and had an incredibly honest conversation with him about his life and some stuff I didn't really know about him. And with his permission, I'm sharing it with you.

Now, I know it's a bit weird because at face value this doesn't have anything to do with our usual topics around creativity or making a living as a creator. But I'm sharing it with you for three reasons.

First of all, this conversation was really meaningful to me, and I think it could be for you too. If you have a chance to interview a parent or someone you love, just record it. It doesn't have to be something crazy, but having an audio or video version of this kind of conversation that you can keep forever is really cool.

Secondly, I feel like my dad's story needs to be heard. He's been through some pretty incredible experiences, and I don't know anyone else in my life who has gone through what he has. And if I have a platform, I just want to give him a voice.

Lastly, I wanted to be vulnerable with you because, let's be real, family and the way we grew up shapes us in ways we might not even realize

I want to thank my dad for being so cool and willing to share this stuff with a whole bunch of strangers because he didn't have to. So, thank you, Dad. I love you.

And with that, I want to introduce you to my father, Tommy Worsham.

Ever been jealous of a super “creative” person? Maybe you feel like you are “kinda” creative but wish you could come up with awesome ideas as good as (fill in the blank person).

I have some good news for you. Research is showing that our brains are wayyyy more malleable than what was previously thought. And guess what? Creativity is something you can develop, no matter how old you are.

I ran across a content creator on TikTok who is in London getting her masters in Science Communication. Her name is Julie Hoeflinger and she brilliantly shares content about the latest research in neuroscience- but in a way that is easy to understand. I saw a series she did on creativity and just had to have her on to explain scientifically why creativity is not an innate gift, but a skill that can be developed through practice and reinforced by our brain's neuroplasticity (don’t worry we will explain that too).

Do you struggle with the balance of wanting to be proud of your work before you put it out into the world but also wanting to be consistent? We live in an interesting time where as creatives we are pressured to constantly produce but then it can feel like our work gets watered down.

There has to be a balance right?

Today I share a thought about producing work NOT for response, but to improve our baseline. When we produce work simply for attention, it is difficult to get better. If we focus on being consistent so that we CAN be better, that’s where the magic happens.

It sounds super sexy to talk about running your own business, following your dreams, and doing art for a living but here is the dillio y'all-- there are sacrifices that need to be made. Maybe you need to live with a relative for a while, maybe you need to not go out so much with friends and work on your craft, or maybe you need to make less for a bit until you can get your business off the ground.

If you are looking for a no-BS conversation about building a creative business from the ground up you are going to love this conversation I had with Hannah Wilson. Hannah is an artist and designer based in the UK, and has built a following of 100k on Instagram and 10k on Twitter, in 10 months purely by sharing visuals. And for good reason.

Her work is simple, and direct, and speaks to the heart of what a lot of us as professional creatives struggle with. I had her on to talk about how she is building her creative career, the realities of following your passion, and trusting your instincts when you go the unbeaten path.

He says there is even a purpose in all of this. Now as an advocate, author, and public speaker, Michael has shared his story on Capital Hill, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, as well as the National Institute of Health. Who you know is everything. You have heard that, we believe it, and yet so many of us don’t take the time to really invest in relationships. Building genuine connections is Christopher McDonald’s specialty. On paper he is what they call, in the entertainment space, a “talent booker” but between you and me…he is simply a BOSS at loving people and bridging relationships.

At an early age, he knew he had a gift with people and figured out a way to make a living building relationships. Now as a talent booker for Impact Theory, The Kelly Clarkson Show, and leveraging a bunch of other side hustles where relationships are at the heart, Christopher generously shares his journey with us and his philosophy around building a career in a creative industry by keeping people at the center.

In this conversation you will hear about “finding the void” so you can “break into” your industry, how his career improved after the “magical year of no”, and the two lessons his mom gave him before she passed that shaped his career and approach to life moving forward.

When you think about being a better performer, whether that is speaking on a stage, acting, or maybe even telling stories in the breakroom, there might be a temptation to think that performance is something outside of you. Maybe you think you need to deny your personality and step into someone else… What if I told you that the secret to being a better performer was actually committing to your unique personality? That's what our guest https://www.josephpearlman.com/ ( Joseph Pearlman), teaches. Is “surrendering” weak? I am sure you are like me, you have a lot of big goals, and dreams, and you pride yourself on being ambitious. When a spiritual teacher starts talking about “surrender”, you might feel a lot of resistance. Culturally our narrative around the term has been painted as a weakness like we are giving up. However, what if our resistance around surrendering…IS the thing that is keeping everything we desire, everything we need, further away? What if surrender IS the magic that we are waiting for? Our guest this week,http://www.kuteblackson.com ( Kute Blackson), a transformational speaker, and best-selling author, invites us “into a new paradigm of surrender” which he says is “the most powerful thing you can do”.  In this conversation you will learn, the true definition of surrender, why is it key to unlocking everything you desire, and how to align all that incredible ambition (yes, its a great thing!) with your soul's calling. If you are an aspiring storyteller or performer, or maybe just want to flex your creative muscle a little more, I am sure the advice to “develop a strong point of view” has graced your ears more than a few times. In order to really make interesting work, it needs to be embedded in truth. However, what do we get beat out of us as kids? (Hint: our voice, our opinions, and expressing them). Especially if you are a woman. Our guest this week,https://www.keepingithuman.com ( Kathy Klotz-Guest) is a speaker, author, comedian...and a recovered tech exec. She spent her career “doing tech in the day, comedy at night.” She loved her time on stage because it was a place she could experiment, be honest, and tell all the “truths” she was living. In this conversation, we dig into how to develop your voice and have the courage to express your point of view. Specifically, we discuss this within the context of being a woman when there is pressure to present yourself in one conventional way. As creatives, we want to be successful, right? But that word can feel like a never-ending pursuit. When you get a little further along in your life, maybe with a family and “grown-up responsibilities” it can be difficult trying to figure out how to strike a balance between your work, your family, and this never-ending pursuit of “success”. Today I sat down with my friend Mark Pasternack, a filmmaker, who is passionate about building financially sustainable businesses and helping families work well together. We discussed setting goals that are aligned with the lifestyle you want, making space to be a HUMAN (we have to be reminded about that sometimes don't we?), and how to find a community of like-hearted people who will better you every step of the way. Hope this conversation encourages you that there is no one path to success. We define it. We are creators, aren’t we? It always comes back down to us, doesn't it? When we look at most external issues and dig deep enough we see that the solution is often found within. Building communities, getting better at our craft, and feeling more confident in our presentations (the list goes on) is an invitation to address something internal. Sucks. But y'all know it's the truth. Our guest this week, Joél Casanova is a dance instructor and founder of Beathunter where he helps people reconnect with themselves through dance and tap into a fully expressed version of themselves. I met him in the lobby of a hotel in Kentucky. We will tell that story. In this conversation we discuss stretching our comfort zones, loving our unfiltered selves, and giving our gifts over to a higher Being.  ACCESS FULL SHOW NOTES HERE:https://www.heatherparady.com/blog/bestwaytopromote ( )https://www.heatherparady.com/blog/joelcasanova (https://www.heatherparady.com/blog/joelcasanova)

This episode wasn't in the content calendar. It’s a little heavy, but it needs to be said. I’ve been criticized before that I put too much emphasis on the “human/heart” stuff and not enough on tactical/linear approaches that “move the needle forward.” And I get it. As community builders, we want to grow. We have big dreams and want to help a lot of people. There is nothing wrong with that. But when we don't keep the main thing TRULY the main thing, stuff like this happens.

So I won't apologize or back off these issues. Yeah, next week this email might be about some cool tactical way to onboard community members or an interesting way to engage with your Facebook group.

But the day we stop talking about the human side of community building is the day we don’t deserve to talk about it.

Love you guys & I’ll say it again and again, The work you do matters.   -Heather

If you are a small business owner, a community builder, or a leader, you are probably thinking about marketing quite a bit. It’s not just about making more sales (I mean that’s nice) but if you KNOW your community is valuable and you WANT to help people, marketing will be a big part of your journey. Our guest this week, Caitlin Strempel encourages us to NOT use terms like  “Web3 marketing” but understand that we are simply discussing the “future of marketing”. She also says that you don’t need external hype, engaging a community the RIGHT way will create what she calls “inside-out-hype” (and what will work much, much better.) Can you build COMMUNITY on TikTok? Yes, it is a “Web2” platform BUT these are the platforms many of us are still using to reach people, connect and build communities. Can you “delegate” someone to build your community? Have you THOUGHT about that? Community managers and strategists have their place but…where do YOU fit into the equation?  I spent 8 months studying NFTs/Web3 with my co-host on a super popular show called NFTs for Newbies. Before we quit, we were the most downloaded NFT show out there. I was pretty confident venturing off into the topic of “Community Building” as a sub-niche of the Web3 conversation when our show ended because: EVERYONE talked about how important community building was in Web3 I love that topic, it’s important from a macro and a micro perspective

What I didn’t expect though… How many people want to “delegate out” building a community. They want to hire someone to come in and build it for them. I know because that’s what people have wanted me to do for them. A lot of people.  I have come in to help a few brands start their communities and build a strategy around them, but I cannot “grow” one for you. No one can, nor should they. We have been conditioned in the online space to automate as much as possible, which is great. To streamline processes and be efficient, which is awesome. For online entrepreneurs to create “passive” income. Cool.

Here is the deal though, if you are not PRESENT with your community. If you don't use your own fingers to type, use your own words to talk to them, and frankly give a crap….they will feel it. You can’t fake community. You can’t automate it. You can’t hand it over to someone.

Now, who wants to build a community? Haha.  I want this to encourage you if you are one of those people who TRULY cares about the people you are serving because the fact this is such a high-touch point process means that even if you don't have all the resources as the next guy….if you just freakin’ care you are winning. You will stand out. I could go on but I just want to encourage you on this beautiful day that you don’t need all the bells and whistles. You just need to show up. Today, tomorrow, and next Wednesday. I’ll be doing that for you too. CONNECT WITH US! Our guest this week,https://andystorch.com/ ( Andy Storch), is literally a super-connector. No really, he is phenomenal at connecting with people and building relationships. What does this have to do with community building? Um, everything. Andy will admit that he has a personality that makes relationship building and networking fairly easy BUT trust him when he says that was not always the case This skill set was something that he had to develop. Today we took several listener questions about building authentic connections with lots of people, developing the skill of remembering names, and Andy's thoughts on WHY community building is “the thing” in Web 3. Andy is a great friend and one of my favorite people as of late. Excited to introduce you to him and I am confident this conversation will help you in your community-building journey. TOPICS: Why are businesses shifting into Community Building in Web3? Paid communities vs. free How to balance building relationships, work, taking care of yourself, etc. How to remember people's names

Our guest this week,https://365driven.com/ ( Tony Whatley), known as the “Side Hustle Millionaire”, has successfully built multiple online communities. He doesn’t believe that everyone should have one though and shares with us what we need to consider before starting to build one ourselves. He also digs into how to grow communities by providing REAL value (it might not be what you think) and why we should be focused on building relationships within the community and be mindful that we are not fixated on being the only voice. Tony is one of my favorite voices in the online space, even though we have totally different interests and brands. Which proves the point that he preaches here, when you are REAL with your communities, when you are focused on being yourself and adding tons of value, people can’t help but be in your corner. I feel that way about him because he practices what he preaches. He really does care about people and knows what he is talking about. Enjoy this value PACKED conversation with THE Tony Whatley. TOPICS: How he has built communities with 10s of thousands of ENGAGED community members How to determine if you a REALLY providing value to your community What happens if you are doing "all the things" and it's still not working? Our guest this week,https://cat-moore.com/ ( Cat Moore), is the very FIRST “Director of Belonging” in Higher Education serving now at the University of Southern California. She eats, sleeps, and breathes the topic of belonging. Cat shares with us today why as community builders we need to STOP putting “Belonging” into a category and understand that it is already INFUSED into every aspect of our lives. The question is HOW are we facilitating belonging in the experiences that we create? I believe if we get THIS right, my friends, if we pay close attention to the wisdom that Cat shares with us all the other things we are focused on when it comes to building a community will fall into place. Yes, we are builders, but people will always be the most important part. Always. Cat is quickly becoming one of my favorite people, she practices what she preaches, is using her story to help others, and is brilliant with words. I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did.  TOPICS: Balancing ambition, moving the needle, and also slowing down for "the one" Facilitating group conversations that include as many people as possible. Our guest this week, https://www.instagram.com/p/BKvqpUzj1pX/ (Shawn Coss), is the co-owner and artist behind the massively successful brand, https://anymeansnecessary.com/ (Any Means Necessary). He and his partner Mikey have built a HUGE following and loyal community around “dark art” and mental health. I met Shawn a few weeks before this recording. He was super humble and you would have never known just by talking to him that they had built a multi-million dollar brand in a SUPER difficult industry. But the coolest thing about our conversation, and what caught my attention, was how he talked about his community. In today’s episode, Shawn shares how he was able to connect his art with the right audience, be vulnerable about his own story and experience with mental health, and how he is able to focus on his art while still fostering community. Shawn is super cool and down to earth. Grateful I randomly met him at a conference and got to introduce him to our community of builders.  TOPICS: Advice for artists who want to build community around their work Balancing marketing & community building while still focusing on your art Being vulnerable with your community and creating an open culture

Our guest this week,https://abty.co.uk/ ( Ryan Hartley), is the community leader and Chief Heart Officer for Always Better than Yesterday which “exists to help develop heart centered leaders, teams, organizations and communities.” On a personal note, he is a good friend and one of the first people I thought of when I created this show. Why? Well, you will hear from today’s conversation that Ryan’s approach to building community is a bit, what should we say..? Unconventional. If you feel overwhelmed with all the ‘tactics” to grow your community, and feel like there are a hundred things that you “should” be doing, this episode is for you. Ryan’s approach to building community is ALL about leading with the heart, and if you heard how his community talks about him, you will know that his method works. Today's conversation is all about true connection, bettering our communication with our communities, and stretching our mindset of what “leading with love” actually looks like. Our guest this week,https://twitter.com/MaverickMedia15 ( Ty Greenfield (The Mayor)) is one of the best community builders that I personally know. I met him when I was hosting the NFT for Newbies podcast. He came on our show then and did a wonderful job talking about building community for a project called Based Fish Mafia. Ty is one of those people that if his name gets brought up people go, “Oh! What a great guy!” and there is a reason for it. The same reason people like him is the same reason he is great at building community, he focuses on each individual person in front of him and will spend his TIME helping them, no strings attached. I think it would be easy with a show on building community to forget the most practical (and best) tip of all, truly care about people. If you are in the NFT space and don’t know “The Major” it's an honor to get to introduce him to you. Enjoy his insights today, and take to heart his advice that, ‘It's always community first.’ TOPICS: Why are founders are leaning into community over traditional marketing tactics Why IRL events are HUGE for NFT projects The role of education in building community Is there a value of community outside of its monetary gain in NFT projects? Our guest this week,https://nakedpastor.com/ ( )David Haywardhttps://nakedpastor.com/ ( (the Naked Pastor)) is a deconstruction cartoonist who creates “Art that provokes honest conversations about life and spirituality.” If you asked me though, he is a thought leader who is literally saving people’s lives and giving them hope. No…really. As a previous pastor, he has studied community, built many, and “gets” the need for human belonging. ALSO as someone who left the church, he gets that a lot of us are looking for a healthy community, and sometimes the online space is the only place we can find it. My husband and I have been following him for years, have his art handing in both of our offices, and believe deeply in the community that David has fostered. Today I ask him some hard questions about creating safety in community (esp when it is online), dealing with trolls, and how to deal with criticism. The Naked Pastor leads by example, hope you follow his work and take to heart his wisdom in this conversation. Our guest this week, Dr. Kinga Mnich is an international social psychologist, educator, and speaker specializing in emotions, positive psychology, and gender. She is here to help us as community builders…well, build OUR own confidence. In this conversation, Dr. Mnich gives us four aspects of confidence and walks us through how to develop our own through a couple of quick exercises. She also presents a case for focusing on INTEGRITY over “authenticity” and also talks about how to remain confident even in “uncharted waters” (like in Web3). I met Dr. Mnich last year IRL (That means “in real life” for the Web 2 people;) and to say that she is passionate about her work is an understatement. She has traveled (and lived) all over the world and brings a unique perspective to a lot of the beliefs we have been conditioned to believe without much questioning. I know you will enjoy getting to know her a bit through this quick 20-min conversation and I am CONFIDENT (see what I did there?) that you will gain some powerful tools that will help you in your Community Building journey. TOPICS: How to increase confidence (especially when you don’t FEEL it) The 4 pillars of “The Confidence Model” Being confident in uncharted waters (like in Web3!) Our guest this weekhttps://linktr.ee/markarobinson ( Mark Robinson) says that human CONNECTION is the KEY to building community in Web3. How do we better connect though …digitally? Today we dig into the power of video, how to communicate your values and small shifts you can implement in your marketing that will not only help more people learn about what you do but also facilitate community-focused marketing efforts. Mark was one of the first people I reached out to when I was thinking about making this show. I knew he was well versed in the Web3 landscape and since he has spent years studying digital marketing and working closely with brands to make the transition between Web2 and Web 3, he would have some good insights. He confirmed my suspensions and said that community building was THE thing that brands needed to embrace. I enjoyed this conversation because Mark indirectly pointed out that it is not that we have to use completely different tools to build a community, we mostly need to change our philosophy around what building one looks like. TOPICS: What does “Community” look like in a digital landscape? What worked in Web2 that isn’t working in Web3? How to use POAPS to build community What is the downside of NOT embracing this new tech? How is building community different in Web3 vs. Web2?

Our guest this week, https://brianfanzo.com/ (Brian Fanzo) is a digital futurist, Web 3.0 keynote speaker, and the HOST of The first DAILY https://www.nft365podcast.com/ (NFT Podcast) where he is minting an NFT every day for a year. Yeah, you read that right. But most of us know him as simply as Fanzo. I ran across him last year when I first started learning about NFTs and after hearing him on a Twitter Space, I knew I wanted to join his thriving community of hundreds of thousands of people, not just because he knew a TON about advances in tech, but his genuineness was next to none. I've been lucky enough to call him a friend as of late, and he generously spent a few moments with us to share what he has learned from YEARS of community building and how he sees it evolve as we approach Web3. We cover why he believes community building is the future of business but also more “complex” in Web 3, the biggest MISTAKE community builders make, and how to EMPOWER our communities to onboard more members.  I learned a ton, and am excited to present to you, the man, the myth, the legend, Brian Fanzo. TOPICS: “Community Building is the future of business”…how come? Why is Community building in Web 3 “More Complex”? Why leaders need to “get out of the way” and let the community have a voice How to empower your community to onboard new members Difference between Community Managers and Moderators How do you bring new people into your community and still keep the right vibe?
