Every fortnight we have two new guests from the wider construction industry join Alex & PB Plumber to talk about their life being a tradesman or tradeswoman. Carpenters, Plumbers, Electricians & Builders and everyone else who works on the tools can get their voice heard.
On this episode of the Trade Legends Podcast, we're joined by our first-ever flooring guest, Dan from Wellington Flooring, who's spent 19 years in the trade and built one of the most recognisable flooring brands on social media. Dan fell into flooring by complete accident, turning down a job at Abbey Road Recording Studios at 16 because he didn't fancy the train to London, before a chance meeting with the fitter laying his mum's floor changed everything. We take it right back to the start and unpack how a nightclub worker with no plan became a showroom owner, from years on the tools and price work, to the moment in Covid when a friend showed him around a garden centre, and he realised he was more scared of missing the opportunity than taking it.
We dig into the decisions that have shaped the business since: why going appointment-only at the showroom, something Dan was forced into rather than chose, turned out to be one of the best things that's ever happened to the company, cutting staff costs and time-wasters in one move. Dan is honest about the trap of building a brand that looks bigger than the business behind it, why he's his own worst enemy for jumping back on the tools, and how his business partner Nathan keeps him off them. We also get into the reality of the grind: same-day quotes, site visits on the way to the podcast, invoices paid at three in the morning, and why Dan's happy to break himself at 37 for a few more years to get Wellington where it needs to be.
Dan also breaks down why image sells as much as skill: the matching vans, the uniforms, the showroom he designed on paper himself, and why customers spending serious money on floors want to see a clean van on the drive. He explains why tradesmen who say they can't afford a videographer are usually pricing their jobs wrong, and why the quote "you lose a job to someone worse than you if they market themselves better" has stuck with him for years.
On this episode of the Trade Legends Podcast, we're joined by landscapers Nathan and Joe from Slade Landscapes, a Surrey-based duo who've turned a landscaping business into one of the most-watched trades accounts on social media. Nathan came into the trade the long way round, leaving school to train as a plumber before falling into landscaping and going out on his own at 24, while Joe nearly ended up behind a desk at the Home Office before deciding an office job wasn't for him. We take it right back to the start and unpack how two lads with no real plan built something that's now trebled in size, almost entirely off the back of the content they post.We dig into the business admin nobody teaches you when you start a trade, the VAT registration that catches people out, the self-assessment, the business rates and the quarterly tax that so many new trade businesses never see coming until it's too late. Nathan is honest about the mistake that's caused him the most stress in nine years of running the company, and it isn't the work; it's the schedule: booking too many jobs in, letting the diary run away from him, and pushing customers back until it starts costing him. We get into why he now tells clients they'll wait nine months or take their deposit back, and why making people wait is often the clearest sign your work is good enough.Nathan & Joe also break down the hidden costs of scaling a landscaping business: the labour, the overheads, and the numbers that have to come out of pure profit just to keep the wheels turning, and why staying small and in control has been a deliberate choice rather than a limitation. Nathan and Joe explain how they've kept the work coming through referrals and social media rather than pouring money into advertising, and why, even now, some of their biggest videos are the ones they nearly didn't bother posting.
On this episode of the Trade Legends Podcast, carpenter Ben Bailey returns four years after his first appearance, and a lot has changed. When we first had Ben on the show, he'd just started out and was working with clients from Made in Chelsea. Since then, he's gone from cutting MDF under a gazebo on his driveway to running his own dedicated workshop, building bespoke carpentry and fitted furniture for celebrities and professional footballers, all sparked by one Instagram DM he thought was his mates winding him up.
We dig into the real cost of hiring your first employee, the van insurance, tool insurance, training and overheads that most tradesmen never factor in until it's too late, and why getting your first hire wrong can seriously damage a small trade business. Ben explains why he turns down enough work to hire four people tomorrow, yet still chooses to stay small, and we debate whether "hire slow, fire fast" is the right approach when your lead times stretch past a year.
We also break down the hidden costs of taking on your first unit or workshop, the business rates, electric bills and running costs that land after you've signed the lease, and why those unexpected bills kill so many new trade businesses in their first year. Ben shares exactly how he made the step up without taking a huge risk: renting a single spare workbench from a local firm and working on it until 11 pm after his day job, before finally committing to his own space.
Along the way we cover starting a carpentry business during Covid, using social media and Instagram to win work and attract celebrity clients, working with tool brands, staging show homes for developers, quarterly tax and the admin nobody teaches you, and the family side of self-employment, why Ben structures his whole business around the school run, and why he'll never miss a sports day for a job.
This week on the Trade Legends Podcast, landscaper and content creator Tom joins us for his long-awaited return, and he doesn't hold back. It's been nearly three years since Tom last sat in the studio, and in that time his life has changed beyond recognition. Tom opens up about the moment, two years ago to the day we recorded this, when he hit rock bottom. He talks honestly about the help he got, the people who stepped up, and how he pulled himself back.
This isn't a sob story. It's one of the most genuine, hopeful conversations we've had on the podcast, and Tom tells it the way only he can. Since we last spoke, Tom has gone from around 1,000 followers to closing in on 24,000, picked up brand deals and ambassadorships, and completely transformed how his landscaping business operates.
He tried scaling up with a team of three, decided it wasn't for him, and went back to working solo, finishing every job ahead of schedule and making just as much money with far less stress. He also lost seven and a half stone. At his heaviest, he was 22 stone, and the weight he lost was equivalent to the combined weight of his two boys. We touch on Mounjaro, the journey that came with it, and why there's a part two coming on that topic alone.
We round off with Tom's take on dodgy customers versus dodgy tradespeople, why he now takes a 50% deposit without exception, and what he'd tell himself ten years ago, starting out in the trade. If you're going through a difficult time, please reach out. Samaritans are available 24/7 on 116 123.
This week on the Trade Legends Podcast, Toni from ALO Electrical has spent over 15 years building a fire and security business from the ground up, and in this episode, he holds nothing back. Toni left school without grades, enrolled on a BTEC business course, bought a motorbike the same day and never went back.
He ended up becoming a chef before retraining as an electrician in his 20s, inspired by a family member in the trade. His first job interview involved being handed a plug and told to wire it on the spot, and that moment stuck with him. He went self-employed in 2009, founded ALO Electrical, and has been building it ever since.
But it hasn't always been smooth. Toni opens up about a large-door entry and auction system job at a stately home — £14-15k of work — that didn't pay for 9 months. Lying awake at night, wondering where the money was coming from. And how that experience made a 50% deposit on every job completely non-negotiable from that point forward.Toni also get's into the real challenges of taking on apprentices as a smaller firm, what colleges are getting badly wrong about preparing young people for the trades, and the hidden electrical dangers Toni regularly finds on site that builders have left behind, including a fire alarm system in an HMO that had been relocated, cabled chopped off, and left dead in the wall with tenants still living there.
We round off with a conversation about the financial burden on self-employed people right now, and why understanding your own numbers is the single most important thing you can do as a trades business owner.
On this week's episode, Al sits down with Jermaine from Stately Home Developments, a luxury renovation and construction brand built from the ground up over the last five years. Jermaine's path into the trades is one of the most unexpected we've come across. Starting out on weekends with his granddad doing kitchen and bathroom fits in East London, he quickly realised construction was where he belonged. But before going all in, he took a serious detour into the world of acting, extra work on Spider-Man sets, BBC and ITV productions, film festivals, networking with directors, and eventually a gig in Atlanta after living in Malta and South Africa. When Covid hit, he came back to the UK and went full steam ahead with Stately Home Developments, and hasn't looked back. In this episode, we cover how social media has transformed the way he wins work, why putting your face to the brand gives you the upper hand before you even arrive on site, what he learned watching a terrible builder somehow win premium jobs, the real cost of running a construction business on relationships and mental load, and why investing in yourself early is always cheaper than waiting. On this Episode of Trade Legends, we talk about how Britain needs 25,000 new electricians a year. We're producing maybe 5,000. Mark Allison has spent 20 years in the electrical industry and is now on a mission to fix the training crisis from the inside, hands-on, accredited, no shortcuts. We get into the £12k course scams robbing people blind, why employers have stopped taking apprentices, what the government keeps getting wrong, and why the next decade is going to make electricians seriously wealthy, if they're ready for it.
Luke Freeman joins the Trade Legends podcast to talk about life as a self-employed electrician for two years. We cover the apprenticeship journey, going self-employed with no domestic experience, cash-flow realities, toxic trades on social media, pricing wars, and why building your reputation matters more than your follower count.
This week on Trade Legends, Sophie McGee is a third-year electrical apprentice, and she's had the full experience, good employers, bad ones, and everything in between. We talk about leaving nursing mid-COVID, getting into the trades with zero background, the apprenticeship system that's quietly falling apart, and why more women in trades is good for everyone. Honest, straight-talking, and worth your time whether you're an apprentice, an employer, or just thinking about making a change.
Two Trade Legends return. Dom and Reiss are back on the podcast. Both businesses have grown, the jobs are bigger, the money's bigger, and so are the headaches. In this episode, we get into how having kids changes everything when you're running a business, why most tradesmen are leaving serious money on the table with their accountant, the real reason growing your team too fast will bury you in admin, and how Dom is building a multi-business group with a clean exit/business sale in mind.
Chirag is back on Trade Legends, and this time he's revealing all, including how he went from recruitment and estate agency to qualifying as a gas engineer in just two weeks. We get into whether that's actually enough to be safe on the job, the real cowboys in the industry, growing a YouTube channel to 16K subscribers, why long-form content beats shorts every time, the customer comments that make every tradesperson's blood boil, and why consistency is the only thing that actually builds a career.
Bespoke furniture maker Josh from Emerald & Grace returns to the Trade Legends podcast 3 years on, and a lot has changed. Josh opens up about growing his workshop, investing in machinery, taking on the biggest project of his career and the realities of running a one-man trade business. We also get into social media, brand deals, comparing yourself to others and why the long game is the only game worth playing.
Anthony from Rothenberger joins us to talk about how a 75-year-old titan of the industry is staying ahead of the curve. From Lee’s start as an engineer in '97 to Rothenberger’s massive €2 Billion global presence, we dive deep into the tech that’s making tradespeople faster, more efficient, and more profitable.
Sam from Oval Renewables launched a solar business during Covid with just £3k and no guarantees, and lived to tell the tale. Mark from Power Sonic Ltd and Adam from Nerrad Tools hold nothing back on big energy companies undercutting independent electricians, the apprenticeship system failing the trades, and what building a business from nothing actually looks like.
Rich Cockerline cold-approached sparks on building sites for 18 months just to get his first break, and that relentless mindset never left him. From working inside the National Cyber Security Centre with zero electronics allowed, to why 13 electrical deaths in a single year is an industry scandal nobody's talking about, this episode goes places most podcasts won't. Fake business coaches, the 2-million-homes pipe dream, and a mission that could save lives.
Russ nearly shut down Talking Tradesmen with just £80 left in his business account, and Kev had his entire van of tools stolen on Boxing Day. Two tradespeople who refused to quit join Trade Legends to get brutally honest about mental health in construction, building a product brand from scratch into Dulux and Johnsons stockists, and why resilience in the trades is more than just a buzzword..
Tom from Testo reveals how the same precision technology used by heating engineers is trusted by McDonald's, KFC and high-end pharmaceutical labs to keep their operations safe. From why relying on guesswork in the trades isn't just unprofessional but genuinely dangerous, to how Awaab's Law is forcing a reckoning in social housing, this conversation goes places most trade podcasts won't. AI fault diagnosis, CO monitoring, heat pumps and why digital documentation is becoming your biggest professional weapon.
Ash, Jack and Joe from Super Trowel are back, and this time they're addressing the controversy from the 2025 event that sent the internet into a meltdown, why Super Trowel 2026 has moved location, and what really happened at Spec Mix in the US. This is the first time they've spoken about the 2025 drama together on any podcast.
Andreas Degiulio from Woodway Windows lost his mum at 24, and explains how that moment fundamentally changed everything about how he approaches work, life and resilience. From early site graft to carving out one of the most specialised niches in period window restoration, this is a conversation about what it really costs to do things properly in the trades. Old school work ethic, charging what you're worth, and building real authority, not empty attention.
Carleton from Nooks Carpenter walked away from an eleven-year factory job during Covid, drove by loss, a mentor's dying encouragement, and one mindset shift: "comfort is the thief of joy." He built a six-figure carpentry portfolio from nothing, using job deposits to buy tools and social media to land million-pound projects. Now he breaks down exactly how he prices, bids and protects his margins on high-end contracts.
Mark and Alex pull back the curtain on what it actually takes to run one of the UK's leading trade podcasts, from last-minute cancellations and juggling real life to conversations that ended up in Parliament. They revisit the hardest-hitting guest stories of 2025 and get honest about why niche trades and real stories will always beat chasing big names. Plus, what's coming in 2026.
Luke from Blue Bulldog Plumbing has turned down brand deals, been threatened by companies for sharing real-world experiences, and built a following by showing jobs going wrong rather than polished highlight reels. Back on Trade Legends for the first time in two years, he gets brutally honest about the pressure, the imposter syndrome, and why credibility in the trades will always outlast a quick payday.
Sean from Monster Rigs started on the tools at 16, survived the post-2008 construction crash in Ireland, and has reinvested every penny building a physical product brand while still staying on the tools. He gets brutally honest about product failures, manufacturing costs, branding mistakes and why most people massively underestimate what launching a trades brand actually costs, in time, money and sacrifice. No shortcuts, no influencer fluff, just the unfiltered reality of building something real.
Frankie from Stolen Tools UK and Shoaib from Trade United expose the organised crime networks that hit 10-20 vans a day, the loopholes criminals use to sell stolen tools as legitimate, and the big influencers who refused to support the fight. This is the most unfiltered conversation yet about what's really happening on the front line of tool theft in the UK, and why the construction industry is reaching breaking point. Van security, police raids, government failures and what tradespeople can actually do about it.
Mark Marshall went from cutting grass and quoting garden jobs to working alongside Gary Vee, Mike Posner and Colin Furze, and he breaks down exactly how those doors opened and what it really costs to stay authentic when fame hits hard. One of the most influential landscapers on the planet gets honest about viral content, building a global audience, and why most people massively underestimate what it takes to turn a trade into a brand. The blueprint is all here.
Theo lost a child, broke his back, watched his business collapse, and his marriage fall apart, and rebuilding himself meant confronting every one of those things head-on. He gets brutally honest about struggling in silence, the pressure of being the provider, and what finding purpose again actually looks like after losing everything. One of the most raw and important conversations Trade Legends has ever had.
George, founder of Hoskins Innovations, started with a £150 loan for a lawnmower and built a landscaping business with over 300,000 social media followers, and he breaks down exactly how social media became his most powerful sales tool for building customer trust. From pricing jobs without square-metre rates to structuring payments that keep cash flow steady, this is genuinely actionable advice for any tradesperson thinking about building a brand. The grit, the mistakes and the lessons are all here.
Laura Jane Clark transformed underground toilets into stunning living spaces for the BBC and broke into one of the most male-dominated industries in construction. Jimmy built CT1 from a small idea into one of the UK's most trusted construction brands through sheer determination. Two completely different journeys, one conversation about starting from scratch, learning from failure and staying authentic when the industry tries to put you in a box.
Mark Marshall went from a rebellious teen forced to repair a farmer's land to one of the UK's most recognisable names in landscaping and social media, and he gets honest about the burnout, the losses, and what lengthy brand negotiations with the likes of Makita and NatWest actually look like behind the scenes. This is the side of influencer life nobody shows you.
Brad and Sam from The Bald Builders lost a million pounds, lived in a caravan with £20 to their name, accidentally bought a stolen house, and somehow built one of the biggest trade brands in the UK, and that's before the KFC prank with 17 million minutes of watch time, the Ofcom complaints, and the online stalker. The most unfiltered, jaw-dropping builder story Trade Legends has ever told.

Chris, who trained up Gavin for the first 2 years of his carpentry apprenticeship, first qualified as a trade carpenter back in 1990 when trade tools were very different. Straight away, he set up his carpentry business "Chris Lowe Carpentry" before voyaging out into the great unknown world of carpentry. Some of his early jobs included kitchen fitting, general carpentry, exhibitions, shop fitting, and even working for the MOD doing their carpentry. Chris wanted to gain as much carpentry experience as he could, as he knew this would give him the best chance of becoming the respected and accomplished tradesman he knew he could be, and grow his business in the construction trade. But every Master needs an Apprentice...Gavin, like many others we've spoken to on the trade legends podcast, struggled at school. Rather than go on to A Levels, he decided to enrol onto a computer course, believing this was a field that would interest him. Oh how wrong he was. Upon completing the course, he changed direction completely and took up a carpentry apprenticeship to get into the construction trade, recalling his enjoyment for Design and Technology at school. Gavin was paired up with Chris almost immediately, where he would work side-by-side in the trade with him over the next 2 years. They would, however, part ways before Gavin's carpentry apprenticeship was completed."Why?" I hear you ask... Well, you'll have to tune in!Chris and Gavin continue to work closely together, sharing ideas and tips regarding carpentry, jobs, trade tools, costs, tool theft, and pricing. Social Media is a vital tool in the fight to stay relevant, and Gavin has worked closely with Chris in teaching him the importance of Instagram, TikTok, Facebook and YouTube.Chris is aware that at this stage in his life, it is vital that he stays up to date with the carpentry trade and construction industry. Too many people in his situation refuse to move with the times especially when it comes to trade tools - a mindset that often leaves them behind. The world of construction is continuously evolving, and it is vital that tradespeople don't get left behind.#construction #tools #apprentice
HOW TO GET INTO PLUMBING & becoming my own APPRENTICELike most young people, Dave @boilerstobathrooms6267 had no idea what he wanted to do as a Career or hat to be an apprentice in. Luckily for him, his mother was prepared for such a situation - "Plumbing David, it pays well!"...so a plumbing apprentiship it was.It wasn't, however, as simple as that, plumbing it was. Dave struggled to find a plumbing Apprenticeship in the local area; something that he would require in order to become a fully qualified Plumber and Gas Engineer in the construction trade."Well..." David thought, "Perhaps I could become my own Apprentice."Now, that might sound like something thought up during a drunken stupor, however it was exactly what Dave would go on do. He set up his own plumbing company, and employed himself to be his own plumbing Apprentice. Once he had his portfolio signed off, he would go on to complete his studies and become a fully qualified Plumber and Gas Engineer in the plumbing trade. But this was just the start of an eventful journey for Dave. Over the next few years, he would experience the horrors of Social Housing, the challenges of on-call work, angry and aggressive customers, and the importance of managing your finances.Yet somehow, with all this going on around him, Dave was able to create a piece of plumbing literature which would revolutionise the lives of so many Tradespeople from plumbers to electricians."What piece of Literature?" With every plumbing challenge he tackles, Chirag continues to demonstrate that passion, skill, and dedication are the keys to success, regardless of societal expectations.

PB Plumber has taken a break from his marathon running to join Big Al for the last show of 2022! For this week’s episode we are joined by Adam from AC Bespoke Carpentry, and Will from Verso Electrical. Adam started his career as a bench joiner, but when the recession of 2008 hit, he noticed the housing market wasn’t looking as healthy as it once was! So where do you go after the housing market? The luxury yacht-building industry of course! Will worked in the this industry for over 4 years, but unfortunately, despite his best efforts, the company wouldn’t let him take one for himself… so where do you go after building luxury yachts? You travel around Asia and Australia! Will eventually returned to the UK where he started his own business as a bespoke furniture builder. Will has dabbled in many business ventures, from starting a clothing brand at University, to working in the Aerospace industry. But after getting a job with Edmundson Electrical, he developed an interest in wiring accessories. Will decided to start his own business specialising in consumer units and circuit protection. He was focussed on developing products of the highest quality, whilst investing back into the business to help it grow to new heights… all in the middle of a pandemic!
