Most importantly, you’ll figure out WHY you are eating when you aren’t hungry instead of worrying so much about WHAT you are eating! Lisa Salisbury is a certified health and weight loss coach and life coach, and most importantly a recovered chronic dieter herself. Midlife can be the worst when it comes to weight gain. If you are wondering what the ehck is going on with your metabolism and how your hormones might play a role, this episode is for you!

I’m joined by Dr. Gillian Goddard, an endocrinologist and an adjunct assistant professor of medicine at the NYU Grossman School of Medicine. She has more than 15 years of clinical experience and a particular expertise in endocrine diseases affecting women during the reproductive years, pregnancy and through perimenopause.

She helps us understand the nuances of hormone interaction during the menopause transition (which includes all those lovely years before as well known as perimenopause!). We discuss why weight gain happens and what we can do specifically in this time to combat it.

Sometimes we explain away our symptoms—chalk them up to perimenopause, aging, or just our own habits. But what if your body is trying to tell you something more?

In this episode, I share a personal story about discovering a large fibroid that had been quietly growing and causing symptoms I kept dismissing. From weight gain I blamed on myself to discomfort I thought was “normal,” I realized how easy it is to gaslight ourselves when it comes to our health.

Dr. Meryl Kahan, a board-certified gynecologist and Menopause Society Certified Practitioner, founded SheMD, a direct care women’s health practice based in NYC. She provides affordable, personalized gynecology and menopause care with longer visits, no insurance hassles, and telehealth options across New York State and Florida. Her patients are often women in their 30s, 40s, and 50s who are frustrated not only by unexplained weight changes, low energy, mood swings, and cravings, even though they’re doing “everything right", but also by being dismissed by their regular doctors that their symptoms are all "normal". After years in the traditional medical system, Dr. Kahan left to create a practice that actually supports women through the hormonal shifts that impact how they eat, feel, and function.

If you’ve ever wondered, “Why am I always thinking about food—even when I’m not hungry?” you’re not alone. That persistent mental chatter around eating has a name: food noise.

In today’s episode, I’m diving into what food noise actually is, why it might show up more often for some people, and how it can affect your relationship with food—especially if you've struggled with weight most of your life. We’ll talk about brain science, mental load (especially for the default parent managing food for the household), and how food noise is different from cravings.

You'll learn:

  • What food noise is and how researchers define it
  • Why it might be both innate and learned
  • The difference between cravings and persistent food thoughts
  • Solutions—from practical tools to, yes, GLP-1 medications as an option

If your brain feels like it’s constantly tuned to the “food station,” this episode is for you.

GLP-1 medications like Ozempic and Wegovy have become more common—but the shame and secrecy around using them haven’t gone away. In this episode, I’m talking about why these medications are not cheating, why I’ve chosen to include support for GLP-1 use in my coaching practice, and how they can be a helpful tool for some women—especially when paired with intentional, thoughtful behavior change.

Whether you’re using these medications now, considering them, or just curious about how coaching fits in, this episode will give you clarity, compassion, and maybe even some relief.

What You’ll Learn:

  • Why using GLP-1s doesn’t mean you’ve failed or taken the “easy way out”
  • What these medications actually do—and what they don’t fix
  • How I support clients on GLP-1s with emotional eating, habit change, and long-term planning
  • What “bio-individuality” means and why it matters in your weight loss journey
  • Why coaching is still valuable even when medication is part of the picture

I’m teaching you today about boundaries and how to eliminate restriction without going into a free for all! Just like we wouldn't leave our kids without some boundaries and structure to keep their lives safe, we can give ourselves the same kind and loving boundaries, without it feeling like a restrictive fad diet.

If you grew up hearing diet rules like “don’t eat after 7pm” or “clean your plate,” this episode is for you. Today I’m breaking down five of the most common diet rules from the ’80s and ’90s and beyond — the ones that had a tiny bit of truth but ended up making us feel guilty, stuck, and confused around food.

We’ll talk about where these rules came from, what part of them still matters, and how to replace them with healthier, more sustainable habits that actually support your weight loss goals — without shame or rigidity.

You’ll learn:

  • Why “don’t eat after 7pm” isn’t about the clock at all
  • How the “clean plate club” messes with your hunger cues
  • What really happens when you cut out all fat or carbs
  • And how to stop letting outdated rules run your eating choices

Let’s clear out the old food guilt and bring in a little more freedom — you deserve it.

If you've ever said, "I just need to get motivated," this episode is for you. The truth is, motivation doesn't show up first—it follows action. In today’s episode, I’m breaking down the common belief that you need to feel motivated in order to start making healthy choices.

I’ll walk you through why waiting for motivation is keeping you stuck and what you can do instead to build real momentum in your health journey. You’ll learn how to take those first small steps—even when you don’t feel like it—and why that’s exactly what gets the motivation flowing.

*Whether you want to eat better, get moving again, or just stop starting over every Monday, this episode will help you shift the way you think about action, motivation, and the habits that lead to lasting change.*

What You’ll Learn:

  • Why motivation isn't the spark—it’s the result
  • The mindset shift that gets you moving even when you’re “not feeling it”
  • What to do on the days when you’d rather scroll or snack
  • Why starting small matters more than feeling inspired
  • The real reason you're not taking action (and how to fix it)

Have you ever felt stuck between two thoughts that seem to contradict each other? Like, “I love myself... but I still want to lose weight” or “I know what to do… but I’m not doing it”?

This episode is all about holding those seemingly conflicting truths—and finding peace right in the middle.

In this episode, I’m exploring the concept of “Two Things Are True,” inspired by Dr. Becky Kennedy’s work in Good Inside—and how it applies to weight loss, body image, food choices, and self-trust.

We’re talking through real examples like:

  • Loving your body and wanting to lose weight
  • Trusting yourself and needing structure
  • Wanting consistency and needing flexibility

You’ll see how powerful it is to let both sides be valid. It’s in accepting both sides so you can move forward without all the mental drama.

If you’re tired of feeling conflicted, stuck, or like you’re always self-sabotaging, this episode is for you.

What To Do When You Overeat–During Weight Loss!

Your nervous system controls more in your everyday life than you’ve probably ever thought about. When you hear things like “reduce your stress” really what that means is to regulate your nervous system.

Leah Davidson is my guest expert today to teach us exactly that. She is a life coach and a speech language pathologist, where her primary work was with traumatic brain injury. She learned so much from that population regarding nervous system regulation that she realized we are ALL dealing with dysregulated nervous systems.

You’ll learn some great questions to ask yourself when you feel your energy rising–a sure sign that your nervous system is becoming activated. All this will help with your choices in the kitchen with your nutrition and with your other health behaviors!

What To Do When You Overeat–During Weight Loss!

This is the episode you’ve been waiting for–all things weight loss medications! Not only will we deep dive on the GLP-1 class of medications but Dr. Ogle, a double board certified family medicine and obesity medicine specialist, will also detail out the other options out there.

You will learn what you would need to do while on these medications, the 4 pillars of obesity medicine, as well as the options for weaning off. Although Dr. Ogle isn’t your physician, you will gain tons of insight as to whether or not you should speak to your physician about adding a medication to your weight loss plan.

You’ll hear us speak several times during the episode about how coaching and support is still vital, even if you decide to add medication–so this isn’t an either/or type situation as far as coaching vs. medications is concerned.

You’re busy. There’s no way around it. But being busy is actually the perfect reason to start with a weight loss coach. If you don't learn to prioritize your health during busy times, when will you?

So many of my clients have asked me “I've got a trip coming up, should I really start now? ” or “I’ve got family coming into town” or “its’ soccer season and we are gone every weekend.”

The holidays are busy. Sure. But so is every other season of your year.

That’s why I put together this episode to give you jumping off point for losing weight as a busy woman.

I’ll cover 3 thought shifts plus 3 essential habits:

  1. Creating a 24 hour plan in order to use your higher brain to make your food decisions
  2. Using the Hunger Scale to determine how much food to eat, rather than relying on time consuming counting and tracking and stressing
  3. Eliminating the “good/bad” food labels to free up brain space!

Plus: the 3 habits to incorporate at the end!

Today I have the privilege of speaking with Dr. Jessie Hehmeyer to discuss metabolism, cravings and detoxification.

We discuss the importance of identifying root causes for lasting health improvements, and why thyroid health alone is rarely the full answer to weight loss struggles.

Plus Dr. H’s top three often-overlooked reasons for slow metabolism, including:

  • Elevated inflammation: How to test it and why it matters
  • Suboptimal insulin sensitivity: What lab results can reveal before blood sugar issues arise
  • Gunked up detox pathways: the body naturally cleanses itself and why most marketed "detox" products aren’t necessary.

As the holidays approach, Lisa and Dr. Meyer discuss effective strategies for managing cravings and blood sugar to stay in control while enjoying seasonal treats.

BONUS! Dr. H and I continued chatting and ended up recording a BONUS AUDIO for you! Grab that HERE if you want to hear us discuss specifically how to address the inflammation she indicates is a big reason for slow metabolism.

  • Prioritize Sleep – Learn why sleep is your secret weapon for avoiding cravings and how it can support emotional resilience during stressful times.
  • Ditch the Scarcity Mindset – We’ll discuss how to let go of the “limited-time-only” mentality around food, which only leads to overeating.
  • Make Buffets Manageable – Tips for choosing and enjoying foods without feeling the need to try everything.
  • Focus on People, Not Plates – Refocus your holiday gatherings on the people around you, not just the food in front of you.
  • Get Support – How teaming up with a friend or working with a coach can help you stay accountable and focused on your long-term goals.

The holidays don’t have to derail your health, and with a little preparation and intention, you can start the New Year 5 lbs down instead of your traditional 5 lbs up!

I’ve identified 7 times you can expect your lower brain to show up. Why do we need to know this? Because when we expect it to happen, we can be prepared with strategies. If you are surprised that you are being hit with cravings or self-sabotaging thoughts, it’s much tougher to overcome in the moment.

This episode will teach you how to recognize that you can utilize yourself, you can rely on yourself, you can trust yourself to actually be the solution to every single problem, every single obstacle, and every single goal you have. Tracy gives four simple steps for this, using the SELF framework.

Despite the fact that I’m a “weight loss coach,” I actually love telling people they can improve their health and fitness without acknowledging their body weight.

This is precisely the message from my guest Michael Ulloa. He says, “That's not to say that losing weight won't improve health markers. It can. But if you're someone who has for so long been obsessed with weight loss, and that's what all of your behaviors and habits are tailored towards, separate yourself from that for a little bit, just actually focus on the habits and behaviors that will improve your health, and that's when the magic happens.”

We want more magic happening right? Listen in to our conversation and let me know what you think!

When you are asking yourself this question “Are you hungry or are you thirsty?” do you sound judgy? Or are you genuinely interested in the answer.

In this episode we talk about the science of why hydration actually matters. I am always telling clients to drink their water, but I wanted to really get into the why behind it as that often motivates me to improve my actions. Sufficient water intake can suppress the appetite, boost metabolism and facilitate better workouts.

Part two of the episode gets into where this goes wrong, specifically with the hunger vs. thirst question. Let’s not gaslight ourselves into thinking we are thirsty, when we actually ARE hungry!

Are you intrigued by the DEXA Scans sometimes offered in gyms or maybe you’ve heard of them only for bone density in senior citizens? I wanted to learn more about my body composition and so I sought out a DexaFit location near me.

I learned so much I wanted to share with you too! Ken Apperson, the Co-owner of the Midtown Sacramento location agreed to chat with me all about the DEXA Scan and the VO2 Max test I had done.

You’ll learn why you would want to have these tests done and what they tell you about your current body and heart health. Don’t wait for a doctor to suggest testing if you are curious. You can get medical grade testing for relatively low cost for the information you receive. For me–it was totally worth it! Listen in and see if you agree and then be sure to let me know if you have one done too!

Need some no nonsense advice? You’ve come to the right episode! Barbie Boules, AKA the Cognition Dietician joins me today to discuss the four pillars of fat loss in mid life as well as how to keep your brain healthy.

You will love Barbie’s straightforward teaching and expansive knowledge of this topic. If you are trying to figure out weight loss in the pre or post menopause time (don’t forget that’s roughly your 30s, 40s and 50s!) this will be gold for you.

Taking care of your brain has a lot of overlap with the habits that we discuss for fat loss, with two important additions that anyone can do--cognitive reserve and social connection. Listen all the way to the end (yes it’s a longer one but sooo worth it!) for her last tidbit that is just so important.

I’d love feedback on this episode so please feel free to DM me on Instagram or send me an email!

What is fueling you, besides your food?

Food is actually a secondary source of nourishment in our lives. When our Primary Food, or our Careers, Relationships, Physical Activity and Spirituality are where we want them to be, the food on our plate becomes secondary to fueling our lives.

This is the core of my program ideal that states that I want to help you make your life amazing so the food on your plate doesn't have the job of comforter, compensator and celebrator.

When you are satisfied in these big areas of your life, you are less likely to turn to your food to fix them.

I’ve got a great visual tool that goes with this episode–the Circle of Life to really see where your imbalances in these pillars lie. Listen in to see how you can get a copy!

Have you noticed alcohol is affecting your ability to lose weight? Are you thinking you would like to stop drinking or maybe just drink a little less? You’re in the right place. (Not a drinker? Wait don’t go! Molly mentions at the end how all this is so similar to your relationship with sugar as well! So this episode just might still apply to you!)

Molly Zemek is a former sommelier and professionally trained chef, turned emotional eating coach and is here today to help you get clear on what you can expect if you decide to decrease or eliminate your drinking.

She says, “I started to create desire not to have it because what I had desire for was how I felt without the alcohol. It's like I want more of these mornings where I'm waking up just in a great mood and energized. I want more of these, like, eight hour stretches of sleep that I wasn't getting when I was drinking. There's so much pleasure in that. I want more of that. And when I wanted more of those things, I lessened my desire for the drinking.”

There’s a lot of problems with short term and fad diets. I’m outlining 4 major ones I see.

I believe that what we eat in a day is our diet and that we have to remove the negative connotation within our brain that eating less–or rather eating in the amount that works best for your body–is the same as being on a diet.

Do you label your foods “good” or “bad?”

Honestly most of us do to some degree or another.

And if you don’t, you’ve surely heard your Aunt Nancy saying she couldn’t possibly eat a cookie because she had already been so “bad” today having eaten a donut earlier. Or perhaps you’ve said “I’ve been good because I had a salad–I deserve that treat”

Any time you label your food, you inadvertently label yourself–and this is just not true.

You are neither good nor bad for eating certain foods.

In this episode, I am going to tell you the three categories of foods you may want to skip–you don’t have to call them bad, but you’ll want to stop eating them.
I’ll also list all the good foods I eat!

Instead of just the “ins and outs” of 2024, let’s take it another step.

Let’s talk about what you want to keep doing as well!

In this episode, I share what I want to START doing this year, what I want to STOP doing and what I want to KEEP doing.

You can get an idea of what I want to work on for myself this year–I’m definitely not perfect at this health and wellness life yet either! You’ll also learn what I want to start doing this year, and what I’d like to stop doing and what I think I’m pretty good at that I want to keep doing. You’re good at stuff too–don’t sell yourself short. There’s always things we want to keep doing.

This isn’t an exhaustive list either–there’s plenty of things I’m doing that I’m going to keep like loving my family and making them a priority, making dinner every (most!) nights, attending church, helping my mom. . . you get the idea. We don’t have to list them all to know you’re doing a LOT of stuff right!

And I can't wait to see your list too! Be sure to come over to Instagram and share it with me!

What is a “last supper?”

It's those meals you think you need to have before “going on a diet.” It’s all the things you think you need to eat before they are “off limits” after the New Year.

This is not necessary and I’m going to tell you why in this episode!

Here’s what to expect:

What are the thoughts keeping you in scarcity mode before New years?
What tool you can use right now to prevent the "last supper" idea from happening.
And how to recognize if you are “over-nourished.”

The Live Well pillar of the podcast is finally getting some love! Amanda Louder joins me today to discuss why we would want to pay attention to our sexual lives. We discuss the anxiety reduction, confidence boosting, overall good feelings that healthy sexuality can produce.

While I can’t promise sure weight loss when you increase your desire, and have more sex, I can say as Amanda does, “when the sex gets better, everything gets better!”

Healthy sexuality is all about relationship with self, just like weight loss and great body image. So I really felt aligned with everything Amanda was saying.

FYI: this podcast is not explicit but we do talk openly about sexual health.

This is the third installment of the back to basics series in October.

You’re probably thinking October 1 marks the beginning of the holiday season and you wouldn’t be alone. You might also be thinking well I didn’t lose weight again this year, I guess I'll just wait till the new year. But it doesn't have to be that way.

The Back to Basics series will teach you the fundamentals of losing weight anytime and anywhere, regardless of what season it is.

The third basic is Cravings and What To Do With Them!

Managing cravings is an ongoing process within our brains and bodies. Having a craving for something is not a sign that something has gone wrong, or that you can’t “stick to” something.

It’s absolutely normal and natural for your brain to remember something that you’ve eaten in the past and bring it up to the forefront and propose that idea as a solution to the current emotion you are having. Your brain is very efficient at doing this–searching in the past for a solution and then offering it up, regardless of your current way of eating.

You don’t actually have to obey every craving or worry that they are still coming.
Follow my allowing process that you’ll hear in this episode and you’ll be well on your way to knowing what to do when your lower brain offers up the next thing it thinks you should eat!

Did you know that lofty goals are more likely to be achieved than super easy goals?

Yes your brain likes, and needs challenge.

But how do you know if it’s too much? Or in my words. . . What is your Rate of Perceived Exertion with your goal efforts?

I’m going to teach you how to use the Rate of Perceived Exertion scale we typically use in relation to exercise exertion in our goal efforts. Are you trying to lose weight? Do you have goals about eliminating your overeating at night? These are the types of goals we want to put through the RPE test and see where they land.

You’ll see how to measure your efforts and decide where to increase and where to decrease your efforts.

I want you to reach your goals! If you aren’t, be sure to schedule a free strategy session with me so we can assess what’s going on. Goals too easy? Too difficult? Likely it’s the latter! But we’ll figure it out together.

Do you live in a fire prone area? If so, you’ve probably heard the term defensible space. It’s the safe space we create around our homes to prevent the fires from moving quickly to the structures and overtaking our homes.

In the same way, I want to teach you how to create defensible space in your life around stress. When we can fortify ourselves for stressful events that will come, we will be much better prepared.

This includes not only participating in your favorite well being activities (see the episode linked below!) but also making sure we are not in a constant state of fight or flight. Letting our brains and bodies know that we are safe can help us to react in the way that we want to and show up as the person we truly want to be.

Brandon Eastman from the Be Better Broadcast interviewed me a couple weeks ago for his podcast and he did such an amazing job I thought it would be fun to publish that interview here on the Eat Well, Think Well, Live Well podcast.

I shocked and surprised Brandon with some of my answers to his questions, even though he is a coach and someone interested and invested in his own health as well.

Brandon did an amazing job of pulling out my highlight reel! He really let me talk about all my best stuff. Even if you’ve listened to every episode of the podcast, this review of the most important concepts is really valuable.

Do you worry about getting hungry? Does it make you nervous to leave the house without snacks because you might get hungry before you get back? Usually you just eat in these situations right? Go ahead and have a snack so you won’t get hungry later.

This is preventative eating.

We do it to prevent ourselves from being uncomfortable later. But instead we make ourselves uncomfortable now by overeating.

In this episode I discuss several reasons why we might be preventive eating and ways we can overcome the fear fo being hungry.

I also tell you when it could be appropriate to choose some preventative eating.

Are you overweight? Or just undermuscled?

This is a new way to look at our body composition that has nothing to do with the scale. Take a look at how much muscle you have–and you can do that by assessing your strength in daily activities.

Jana tells us in this episode of a 60 year old client who wasn’t able to pick up her first grandchild out of the cot. This is a heartbreaking lack of function.

What can we do about it? We can strength train. Jana shares multiple ways to do this and some of her favorite modalities. Plus she is an expert on mobility, which we also chat about near the end–so stay tuned for the whole episode!

Do you feel like you aren’t quite sure what happened after you overeat? Like you don’t even remember it?

You are likely going unconscious and eating mindlessly. It's not that you are eating in response to negative emotion--or what you might call emotional eating. It's just that you aren't paying any attention (most likely because you are doing something else at the same time) and you aren't really sure how much you've eaten. You just know you feel over full.

This is a type of emotional eating, but isn’t quite the same. In this episode I explore the differences and how to identify when you are eating mindlessly.

I also give you 4 things to work on to reduce your mindless eating and help you get to your natural healthy weight.

How much do you cook from home? Do you hate it? Just not know how? Maybe you prefer restaurant food?

Studies show that we get about 20% of our calories/intake from restaurants.

But what about that other 80%? That is where you can really make a difference in your health. You don’t have to worry so much about those restaurant meals, if you are doing your best in your home kitchen.

I’ve got 6 ideas from my own experience as a home cook on how to get started and improve your skills. This episode is perfect for beginner cooks and seasoned cooks alike.

If you really want to improve your health, your food is the first place to start. According to one of the researchers, "Our food is the number one cause of poor health in the country, representing a tremendous opportunity to reduce diet-related illness and associated healthcare spending."

Whether you work out to improve your appearance or for your health, they aren’t actually separate. Steve Washuta is my guest today. He is a personal trainer with 30,000 hours of experience. He has worked with women of all ages and he says this:

“When people are only focused on vanity, and they don't focus on their long-term health. I compare it to money. So ultimately, what do you want with your money? Of course you wanna make money now and spend it, but you wanna save for retirement because, You know, having money into old age matters.

“Well, you also want to save your body into old age. So if you're burning through your money too fast, or in my case, if you're wearing down joints and ligaments and you're pushing your body too hard at a young age, you're gonna deal with that later on in life. You're not saving your body later on.

“So there are more proper ways to work out for overall health and wellness. That's being concerned with flexibility and mobility and making sure you're not doing too much high intensity and making sure it's not just vanity based. Asking yourself, taking a step back and saying, is this making me feel better? Do I actually feel great doing this?”

We also talk about some ideal training schedules for just getting started and for the more established exerciser!

I hope you found this conversation with Steve insightful and valuable. If you are enjoying the show, don’t forget to rate and review!

Have you heard of hormone replacement therapy? Most of us have and unfortunately many are worried about using it. Or we just don't realize the importance. Dr. Rosensweet labels the early 2000’s study on HRT and then the resulting press coverage as “outrageously odd, crazy, misogynistic.” Basically it was completely incorrect and led to women being afraid to receive HRT.

In this episode, you will learn here how incredibly protective hormones are to women’s health. Remember that menopause is actually a fairly new occurrence in human history. He says “You know, for the couple hundred thousand years humans have been alive, there was no such thing as menopause!”

We are living longer, but we want to also live better, and you’ll see here today that hormones are essential to making our health span match our life span.

Download Dr. Rosensweet’s book HERE

Dr. Rosensweet graduated from the University of Michigan Medical School in 1968. Since 1971, he has been in private medical practice, with offices in Florida, New Mexico, California, and Colorado. Early in his career, Dr. Rosensweet trained the first nurse practitioners in the United States and was in charge of health promotion for the State of New Mexico.

He is a nationally known lecturer and presenter at The American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine (A4M), The American College for Advancement in Medicine (ACAM), The Age Management Medicine Group (AMMG), and more. In 2019, he was called to Washington to speak in front of The National Academies of Science Engineering and Medicine (NASEM) on “The Safety and Efficacy of Bioidentical Hormones.”

Dr. R is the Founder of The Menopause Method and The Institute of BioIdentical Medicine, where he has been training medical professionals to master cBHRT using the most advanced and modern tools. His protocol has been used to treat more than 12,000 women.

Is stress one of your most common emotions? Did you know how it can affect your hormones?

The emotion and state of stress has real impact specifically on the cortisol system of your body. There are three categories my guest Ali Damron gives us--physical stressors, mental stressors and emotional stressors.

Ali gives us strategies on which to tackle first and how to do so.

Believe it or not, this was actually a fun conversation! Doesn't sound fun to be talking all about stress but Ali makes the hormone aspect easy to understand and very doable.

Here is the episode on minerals from Ali's podcast that I mentioned!

How you construct your meals can feel very “diety” if you are counting macros and weighing your food. But it doesn’t have to be that way. Focusing on balancing proteins, fiber and fat on your plate not only will help you stay full longer, it will also help balance your blood sugar. You can do this just because you care about how you fuel your body--not because you are "on a diet!"

Cassie Black and I discuss today the advantages of choosing your foods in this way. It is totally an option for you to care about what’s on your plate AND not feel like you’re on a diet.

Listen for Cassie to say this:
“When you know that nothing's off limits and you have the freedom and flexibility to have the things that you actually do want, it actually gives you the freedom to decide what you want.
Because when you are like, oh, this is off limits, I can't have it. This is bad, or it's going against my diet, all of a sudden you're in your head. Then there’s this scarcity mindset like, let me have it now because I'm not supposed to have it, or I don't know when I'll be able to have it again.
And it's this weird mindset reverse thing with it where it's like, knowing that you can, allows you to choose and it's really cool. Freeing is the word that comes to mind.”

Movement March continues!

Do you know what NEAT is? It's your non-exercise activity thermogenesis. That basically means all the movement you do in a day that is not part of your formal "workout" or exercise routine.

And you'll be shocked at how much difference it makes in your total energy expenditure for the day.

In my dieting days I only thought my workouts "counted" or were important.  That's for sure not the case! I wish I knew all this science I'm going to teach you today back then!

Have you ever been so sick that you simply could not take care of your regular tasks, including taking care of the kids? Yes, we all have. Even if it's only for a couple of days, most of us have had the experience of not being able to function at our full capacity.

This week, we are actually doing something a little different on the podcast. I know most of my listeners are women and they also tend to be moms. I'm talking with Jayne Ann Osborne, who has an amazing experience to share with us today about when moms get sick.

Jayne Ann was sick every day of all four of her pregnancies. You'll hear about her experience with that and how severe her illness was. You'll hear how she continued to create connection with her family. And we even talk about how connection is made when food is not a part of it.

For many of you, the connection to people around food can be challenging when you decide that you're going to eat a little less or maybe just participate differently and food traditions or outings. So really pay attention to how she talks about connection and curiosity, especially when food was not an option. So, although this is definitely an "interruption to our regular programming," as they say, I think you're really going to love this conversation.

About Jayne Ann:

Jayne Ann Osborne has been in the communication and intentional parenting space for 10 years through research, writing, and, now that she has four children, practice. She is also a four time survivor of a pregnancy disorder called "hyperemesis gravidarum," which led her to write, illustrate, and publish a children's book, "When Mommies Get Sick." She is passionate about finding joy and living life on purpose - even when during life's inevitable curveballs.

How do you feel about wasting food? Does it bother you? Have you been a member of the clean plate club for a while? Maybe even since childhood?

Today I'm going to give you some background on where the clean plate idea comes from and you will be surprised--I know I was.

Then we will talk about why our portions are so distorted and what it means for you if you've decided not to overeat anymore. Hint: it means you'll be wasting some food. I'll help you deconstruct how you feel about that and give you some questions to ponder and maybe even journal about on this topic.

Want the questions I pose on this episode in a handy dandy printable journal page? I knew you did! Just download that HERE!

Key takeaways:

  • Where the clean plate idea came from historically speaking
  • How our current portions are so much larger than before--in restaurants as well as in our own homes
  • How "portion distortion" is making overly large portions now look typical
  • How you can think about wasting food
  • The Hunger Scale Episode--essential skill if you are going to not overeat, and therefore be in the situation where you will waste some food occasionally.

The microbiome--what is it and why should we care? This episode will answer that for sure. For starters, consider that genetically "we are about 150 times more bacteria than we are human. We actually have at least 150 times more genes in our bacteria than we do in our human cells! So when you think about genetics and epigenetics and all the things we keep hearing about, bacteria is a big deal."

That's just the first truth bomb Jared drops and there are many, many more!

This next week and half--the time between now (when this episode is published) and the New Year is not a time to dread those coming resolutions.

It's also not a time to overeat because of those scarcity thoughts that your brain offers you. You know the ones that sound like "well I better eat this now while I can!"

This leads to your brain worrying that everything will be terrible when "the diet" starts and so we better let loose now.

This is not necessary and I will tell you why in this episode!

  • What are the thoughts keeping you in scarcity mode before New years?
  • What tool you can use right now to prevent the "last supper" idea from happening.

Have you heard of the Blue Zones? Seems like a dream right--just follow their lifestyle and you too can live to be 100! It's not so simple, or straightforward. In this episode, Erin Skinner and I talk about Blue Zones, and specifically the vegan/vegetarian diet that is pushed with this company, and why it's not all it's cracked up to be.

I know you'll be surprised to learn exactly what was going on in the Blue Zone regions. But you may not be as surprised to hear Erin and I talking about the importance of protein.

My clients know I ask them to eat protein at every meal. Erin also gives us 4 main pillars to begin improving your own nutrition.

Key takeaways:

  • What are Blue Zones and why are they important
  • What nutrients are lacking in a vegan diet
  • Why veganism is a threat to your health
  • The 4 pillars of a healthy eating plan
  • Free guide mentioned in intro: Go-To Meal Guide--grab it HERE

Erin's Bio:
Erin Skinner is a military veteran and Registered Dietitian Nutritionist who helps her clients leverage the power of food to improve their wellness.

Throughout her own health journey, Erin felt frustrated and neglected by the traditional medical community. So, she transitioned to the world of integrative and functional nutrition. She has since helped thousands of patients experience the relief of finding the root cause of their illnesses, and resolving them with individual nutrition plans.

Seeing her patients’ success made Erin passionate about functional medicine. However, she was still frustrated by the lack of access and high cost. As a result, she pursued her license to become an Integrative and Functional Certified Nutritional Practitioner. Later, Erin co-created one of the nation’s first insurance-based functional medicine clinics, the Inspire Health Center. This clinic’s success proved to Erin that functional medicine can be accessed through insurance. Empowered Nutrition is, above all, a continuation of this vision: to make the next generation of healthcare accessible to all.

Erin is also the creator of Lean for Life, a program that teaches you how to heal your metabolism so that you can have natural appetite and weight regulation. Learn more: https://www.subkit.com/empowerednutrition

Listen in for a fun discussion on sleep with Lisa and Janet Whalen.

Janet is a sleep & stress management coach for midlife women. A former insomniac (40+ years!) turned great sleeper, Janet is passionate about helping women give themselves permission to sleep, rest and care for themselves after years of giving everything to family and others. Janet's program, "Permission To Sleep", helps her clients sleep better without pills, potions or needing anyone else’s permission. Janet is a Certified life coach with The Life Coach School, and was formerly trained at CTI as a Co-Active coach. She is also trained in CBT-I (cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia). Before she found her own sleep solution, she spent years as a marketer, family photographer and mom to her two sons, who are now young adults. Now she's empty-nesting in Southern Ontario with her husband of almost 25 years, and can be found reading, kayaking, hiking and working in her garden when she's not talking about sleep.

Key takeaways:

  • What is the real cause of your insomnia
  • Do you have acute or chronic insomnia?
  • What to do when you can't fall asleep
  • What to do when you wake up in the night
