On 15 January 1947 a woman named Betty Bersinger was walking with her 3-year-old daughter when she discovered a dismembered body of a young woman in a vacant building plot in a Los Angeles neighborhood. The young woman turned out to be a 22-year-old Hollywood hopeful named Elizabeth Short—later dubbed the “Black Dahlia”. The gruesome nature of the crime and the Hollywood connection made the case a public sensation. It also became famous for the number of people who falsely admitted to the killing. Who killed the Black Dahlia and why? It’s a mystery, the murderer has never been found, and given how much time has passed, probably never will be.

The British ship Dei Gratia was about 400 miles east of the Azores on December 5, 1872, when crew members spotted a ship adrift in the rough seas. Captain David Morehouse was taken aback to discover that the ship unguided. Morehouse sent a boarding party to the ship, rowing up to the silent ship, the men read the name Mary Celeste on her bow. Mary Celeste’s only lifeboat was missing. There was a six-month supply of food and water—but not a soul to consume it. Thus was born one of the most durable mysteries in nautical history: What happened to the ten people who had sailed aboard the Mary Celeste? Through the decades, a lack of hard facts has only spurred speculation as to what might have taken place. Theories have ranged from mutiny to pirates to alien abduction to killer waterspouts.

In New Orleans, between 1918 and 1919, a serial killer would break into homes of Italian grocers, attacking them and their families while they were sleeping. The grocers often lived in apartments connected to the corner groceries. The killer became known as The Axeman. The Axeman would chisel out a panel of the door to get inside; then, he would use a weapon, an ax or razor, owned by the victims. He would leave the weapons at the scene.
