A Very South Asian Podcast w/Anushray I In today's episode, we discuss Coke Studio, a popular music television programme and a part of the international music franchise.."Coke Studio has always been successful in the Indian subcontinent. Coke Studio Pakistan and India are almost like siblings, with overlapping styles and substance. Unique distinctions as well." .But, as an Indian, I feel joy going through Coke Studio Pakistan’s comments sections. Indians love Pakistani artists, people and culture. There is this overwhelming cultural undercurrent of two siblings alienated from each other. They love each other dearly, but they have to separate due to social, cultural and political situations. .In case you do not know, South Asia is an umbrella term used for the Indian subcontinent, it spans major landmasses from the countries of Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, the Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. People from this region are also part of the growing diaspora across the world, especially in the West. I hope I can bring stories, ideas and generate curiosity about lives, lived experiences and cultures from this beautiful region. Namaste!

She graduated with a MS degree in Communication for Development & Social Change from Temple University. Her specialization is emerging new media. 49 Tanshi.Tanshi is a Delhi-based queer handpoke tattoo artist. Tanshi is a young artist who is creating beautiful tattoos using the handpoke technique, which in my basic understanding is almost like an analog way doing tattoo as opposed to doing it with a machine. They are less invasive, less painful, and “less intimidating” than a machine-done tattoo. The designs are original and unique. Tanshi is known for quirky flash designs which are hand poked.I was able to talk about great topics ranging from handpoke tattooing to life in general to perspectives of being a queer artist working in urban India. Suvi Bains is a Curatorial Assistant at Surrey Art Gallery and a photographer and Expressive Art Therapist. Her exhibit at the Reach Gallery titled KESH explored the boundaries of Sikh men’s private and personal article of faith – kesh (Sikh men’s un-shorn hair). At the Sikh Heritage Museum’s exhibition (Mis)interpretation, her photography presented Sikhism from a feminist perspective. Her work explores personal narratives reflecting the impact of stereotypes and ensuing stigmas in marginalized communities. Her work provokes empathy, cultural appreciation and understanding and cross-cultural reconciliations.

Hi! I am Ridhi, a multidisciplinary artist and customiser, also an undergraduate journalism student. Over the course of 6 years, experimentation with mediums and styles has been my motive.
With the onset of the pandemic and us getting trapped in four walls of our homes, it brought out the creative juices in me and that’s when I started monetising my work. In these two years I have made original paintings for personal as well as commercial use. Did I mention I was initially aiming to get into a fashion college?
Well, I wanted to but destiny had other plans. May I say, better plans. Recently, I reunited with fashion by bringing art and design into the same domain i.e. customisation(hand painted apparels and goods). With this venture, I hope to build a community where art and fashion can co-exist and thrive.

How do Sharadha describe the style of clothes she makes? It's pretty much whatever she wants it to be: slick, pretty, casual, edgy, clean, athletic, simple. The sense of empowerment Sharadha gets from being able to fully choose how she present herself to the world is like none other... It's a neat feeling, especially in a world where everyone is influenced on how to show up ;)

Muskaan Gupta is an illustrator who makes minimalist and contemporary digital art. She is the founder of and the artist behind 0neByZer0. She intends to create art that makes one feel hopeful, calm and serves as a reminder to keep trusting oneself. It started with Muskaan exploring digital illustrations in 2018 to expand her skill set while studying fashion entrepreneurship. She believes in intersectional environmentalism. My illustrations are a medium via which I elaborate upon topics such as sexual education and raise awareness about the need to normalize topics such as sexual relationships so as to remove the stigma that there is in society nowadays, especially in India. My illustrations are a step forward in attempting to normalize wrong perceptions that are present in the mind of individuals regarding sexual education, sexual relationships and make individuals more aware about topics such as women orgasms and sexual health of women.

I am Ayushi Singhal, an interdisciplinary designer and visual artist based out of Delhi, India. I graduated from Symbiosis Institute of Design (Pune) in the year 2019 with a Bachelor’s degree (B.Des) in Fashion Designing. Even though I’ve worked at the core of the fashion industry, I never restricted myself to it. My work generally dabbles amongst graphics, zine-making, printmaking, illustrations, surface patterns, textile, and product design. I am Vibhor Mudgil or as my pen name and social media handle goes “Fido”. I am currently in my first year of Masters in Fine Art from College of Art, Delhi, specializing in VISUAL COMMUNICATION.
I was a man of science during my early years of schooling and realised medicine wasn’t my field of heart and thus shifted to pursue Art, where my mind and soul found comfort.I draw; I write. My work and opinion towards society and stigmas has changed over the course of my journey as an art student. My work reflects instances and opinions of women and friends I have been with and their shyness towards the topics and thought of eroticism and sexual desires even though the theme of my works is a part of their life.
My motive to draw erotic art and illustrations is to clear the smoke of stereotypes associated with women’s emotional health, physicality and self perception.
A woman is equally responsible and should be aware of the intimacy she desires and accepts.Their self perception should not just be limited to knowing themselves with looks but also by their desires.

I am itisha Upadhyay, @yellowmellowcat is my artist name or brand, however it make sense! I started doing freelance illustration work 2 years back after quitting a pretty good well paying job. My creative practice differs every day. I like to mix things up a little to help myself stay motivated.

Hi, I am Jaidev @jaidev_tripathy - an architect, artist and visual storyteller in the field of architecture and urban spaces. Often captivated by spaces, perspectives, and human behaviour in intricate relationships with their surroundings, I have set on a journey to catch and articulate everyday narratives that surround me. A part of this translates to my illustrations, which involve the depiction of urban spaces and characters. The expressive combination of hand sketches and digital rendering is aimed to prompt a moment of pause, as one viscerally engages with my illustrations.

About Sahai: We started out as three individuals passionate to create change about the perception and care of mental health in Bangalore. We were originally MyKahani Bangalore, a chapter under MyKahani, a worldwide mental health organization.
Recently, we’ve rebranded to form Sahai.
In Hindi, Sahai means “a helper or supporter”, which is exactly what we want to be. We want to help anyone who wants to know more about mental health. We want to support those who are struggling with their mental health. And we want to help push the conversation about mental health forward by normalizing it.
As an organization, we aim to destigmatize mental health through educating them about mental health, providing them with accessible mental health resources, and creating a community for them to connect with other people struggling with similar things.

Podcast Ep. 15 Karishma Hosein
Karishma Hosein is currently pursing a PhD in Kinesiology at Western University. Karishma is working to find the best way to help pregnant people begin being physically active and eating well during their pregnancies, and even after the baby is born. Outside of research, Karishma works as a dance and fitness instructor. She began her formal dance training at the age of three in ballet, jazz, and tap. Since then, she has completed training in Royal Academy of Dance ballet, Graham and Limón modern, jazz, tap, contemporary, and lyrical, and has performed for two seasons with The National Ballet of Canada in their production of The Nutcracker. Currently, Karishma is teaching dance in London, Ontario and hopes that her classes will inspire participants to get up and move!

Zain Zulu is a rapper from Pakistan who left his mother country with his parents at the age of 9, for a better life. He spent his early adolescent years in Texas and had no friends. September 11th happened and that only made things worse for Zain’s social life. Being a brown skinned male in Texas at an impressionable age, during the height of war on terrorism made Zain Zulu self aware of his otherness and had him questioning his upbringing and belief system. The isolation and reflection forced him to find hobbies that didn’t require participation by others, and that’s when he found Eminem. It took one song (Lose Yourself) and Zain was hooked. He didn’t want to let it go. After 4 years in Texas, Zain Zulu and his family left Texas to seek a better, more integrated life in Canada. Scarred from his experiences, Zain Zulu started rapping, to fit in. Little did he know that his plea for attention and acceptance would turn into a passion. Since 13, Zain Zulu has been honing his pen along with his self belief and is ready to share his work with the world.

Podcast Ep. 14 Seth Mohan
Seth is multi-talented, multi-faceted, and is constantly learning new skills. He is known for his work in Christmas Chronicles, Schitt's Creek, and Designated Survivor, as well as several other Canadian and International shows and films. Born in New Delhi, India, he came to Canada as a young teenager. He began his artistic journey in radio in 2006; producing and co-hosting the morning radio show in Toronto on AM 530. Following this first foray into the creative world, he took up dancing and singing, alongside radio. Soon after, he began taking improv classes at the Toronto Second City to develop the skill of listening and performing under pressure. In 2011, he spent 45 days in the pristine islands of Philippines, while competing for the top spot on 'Survivor India', the gruelling world-renowned reality show. Following his success on the show he moved to Mumbai in 2012 to pursue his dream of working alongside Bollywood icons like Farhan Akhtar and Vidya Balan in 'Shaadi Ke Side Effects'. He trained with Anupam Kher at his 'Actor Prepares' academy during this period and continued to work on his dance and 'action for camera' skills. While living in Mumbai he teamed up with local talent and co-founded BottomsUp Productions, a new-media creative house, where he wrote, and conceptualized short films for the urban youth. Life and love brought him back to Toronto in 2013, and he has since worked with Canadian filmmakers and playwrights. He has a passion for acting, singing, writing, traveling, and is a dedicated believer in the concept of 'kaizen' - the practice of self-improvement by making continuous incremental changes. Hence, since coming back he has trained with the top acting schools of Toronto. Aside from acting he also teaches yoga in Toronto, and has a Youtube channel, The Kaizen Man, through which he spreads his passion for fitness, health, and lifestyle. Since 2019, Seth has turned his attention to writing and directing independent projects, including two TV pilots and a feature script.

About the Project: "I am Anushray Singh, I am a human-person, who have happened to be born in Northern India, and through a mixture of privilege, luck, inner passion, curiosity, lack of technical skills, self-awareness and what-not, I want to write authentically, and honestly. I want to write about my life as an Indian millennial. I want to talk about how I, and millions of young Indian millennial are navigating life at our current climate. We have heard and listened to many inspiring millennial perspectives from America and the greater West. I feel, as one of the largest democracies in the world, in the heart of South Asia, we as the biggest and youngest millennial population merit consideration of our unique perspectives. My and the young Indian perspectives are shaped by histories, cultures, ethnicities, socio-linguistics, struggles, philosophies, politics, science, arts and much more that dates back to thousands of years. As an Indian, I can make this assumption, that the modern Indian identity is a beautiful confluence of traditional Indian intuitiveness and modern Western intellect."

He is also under the tutelage of renowned singer Pandit Ajay Pohankar. Hasheel has performed around the world and across Ontario. He is also featured in numerous albums and film scores with over 100 tracks to his name. His collaborations include those with Balkan musicians all the way to electronic and hip hop artists.

She received her BFA from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston with a concentration in drawing, painting, and mixed media, and her postbac in Graphic Design from the Corcoran College of Art + Design. Hope was born in Chicago, IL to a Punjabi mother and a Greek-American father, and spent most of her life living in the Washington, D.C. area. She employs both digital and physical artmaking practices, working towards connecting and integrating her creative work, life's work, and spiritual work. Hope lives in Brooklyn, New York, currently growing her art practice, working as a freelance graphic designer, studying yoga.
