In this episode the Founder and Director of "La Cuoca Calabrese - School of Calabrian Cooking", Joe Cairo, discusses the mystery surrounding the murder of the priest that built his childhood parish in Denver, Colorado.
Father Felice Mariano Lepore was gunned down in the rectory of Our Lady of Mount Carmel church, which served the Italian immigrant population of a fast growing Mile High city. He had led the effort to make the church the only one serving the Italian community in Denver. Both he, and Mother Cabrini. worked together to build both the church and the school where she once taught classes.
The backdrop and the events of turn of the 20th century Colorado, as a new wave of Europeans, mostly Southern Italians, vied for a foothold in the New World, created both many friends a few enemies for Father Lepore.
The good father didn't go quietly as he disarmed his assailant and turned the man's gun on him. Neither the priest, nor his attacker survived.
What were the exact circumstances? Who had the priest offended? Were there more than one who had it in for Father Lepore? He was young, charismatic, a leader of his flock.
And, most importantly, how did the late priest hid his common law wife and nine year old son from his congregation?
He worked alongside an actual, canonized Saint in Mother Cabrini. All while being perhaps the biggest sinner. Who was this guy?
We excerpt from "My Calabria" a fabulous cookbook and breakdown of the essence of Calabrian food, written by Rosetta Constantino and Janet Fletcher.
Is keeping a secret selfish? It is when the secret is that Calabria has too few tourists. Mysterious, wild and off-the-beaten-track, Calabria is posed to be known...and appreciated, at long last.
