When we retire we take the habits of a lifetime with us. Some of those are more useful than others.

In this episode, I mangle the pronunciation of Carl Honore's surname and apologise for that. He is the founder of the ‘slow’ movement, and it is in considering his work the notion of a 'slow retirement' came to me.

This was a walk and talk video, hence references to where we are today. That doesn't work quite so well in audio format! The video version is here

Show notes:

Expectations play a huge part in our experience of life. This is true of our thoughts and feelings about retirement and even the planning we are likely to do because the expectations colour what is normal and possible for us. I reference an article by Bruce Feiler about the flawed research that still led to a belief in a 'mid-life crisis', and which you can find here: https://lnkd.in/gXmtuZ6Q The good news is that expectations are aspects of our thoughts and feelings and are malleable. We can all become more aware of what our society thinks about 'old people', about 'retirement', and we can notice what we believe and what feels true for us. Then we can begin to ask a different question. Rather than, 'is this true?', begin to consider, 'does this serve me?' What serves us in building a third-age lifestyle will be far more fulfilling than living into the role of a 'retired old person' as defined by a previous age and lived by default by so many. So please consider what you believe about aging and retirement and ask, do these thoughts and feelings serve me?

Paths are a great metaphor. The Chinese character, ‘dao’ 道 has the sense of a road, a path, and a Way of Life.

You can see where you have been and you can see where you are going. You may even have planned your route. You can even venture off the path and because you can still see the path you can find your way back to, familiarity, if not the ideal.

Where is your path to retirement taking you? Perhaps you are just waking up, as if from sleep, and find yourself on an unknown path. Where you are going? Will there be enough money? What will I do if I am not the same as my job?

Let’s be practical before we get too stressed. Money? There are four essentials: Food, shelter, clothes, and medicine.

The rest is attitude and you really can have a meaningful and purposeful life without Netflix…

What will you do? Well, first you will have to think… me too. Think about what might be interesting to do. The mental wheels might be a little rusty if you thought you were your job, but the good news is, you and I can both learn new tricks!

The end of the road? Your external circumstances will be whatever you have prepared for or have not prepared for. What is worrying you is the worrying itself, the thoughts and feelings and lack of resourcefulness that come from this particular mindset.

An invitation I coach on what I am doing for myself which is preparing for retirement. I have made mistakes along the way and have woken up on a path that is not the one I hoped to travel.

Golly gosh, life is uncomfortable at times and how we respond will change the next part of our journey.

My invitation to you is that you do not have to work it all out on your own.

I partner with people on exactly this — preparing for a new path, a meaningful and purposeful journey. Come and schedule a free Discovery Call and let’s begin you getting yourself back on track or finding a better one. It’s easy to arrange. Click this link to go to my calendar.
