Former tech executive April Burrows joins the pod to discuss her decision to take a career break. This episode is inspired by her LinkedIn post, where she very openly stated her desire to reflect and get clarity on what she wanted out of her career, life, and her experiences. A compelling episode chock full of tidbits to take away that should, hopefully, make you contemplate finding the time to take a break, too. Warning: This may devolve into "old guys reminiscing" about "back in my day," but stick with us - there's a point here. We dive deep into how PLAY, not sport, shaped us. And why PLAY matters and how we can recapture some of that magic in the current state of things. A great episode filled with good laughs and memories. We know you can relate!

Do Adults Get in the Way? To be clear, we are not painting with a broad brush. There are plenty of adults - parents, coaches, administrators, etc, who do it the right way and empower kids to learn, grow, make mistakes, and set clear boundaries of acceptable behavior. However, as we've gone into the "architect parents" era - we can't help but wonder whether adults are doing more harm than good. What an absolute TREAT to have Becky Carlson, also known as the founder of The Fearless Coach, on the pod. Becky is currently the Head Women's Rugby Coach at Quinnipiac University, and alongside her duties there, she is an advocate for coaches and accountability in sport. There are so many great nuggets in this episode that will have you nodding along, questioning why we do things the way we do, and taking you down the RACA process - truly an inspiring guest who we will absolutely want to have back for a part II.

Take a deep breath. Woosah. This is a heavy episode that needed to be made. Hazing affects all teams, all organizations, and can be innocuous in nature or super damaging. Either way, it's a challenge to navigate. We wrap up our Decluttering Szn series of episodes with the top of the pyramid - X's and O's/tech tac/content.

This is the least important part of the pyramid, and we offer some thoughts as to how to reframe even how you might think of X's and O's. This really does turn into a human component conversation, but there is something for everyone in this - we even talk about, GASP, Zoom action.

Intro credit: Jordan Sperber aka @hoopvision68 on Twitter & on YouTube.

We're in Part II of our Decluttering Szn episodes and this time, we moved up a tier on the pyramid to Person and Program Development. Most people know this by the buzzwords of culture and leadership, etc - we prefer to use climate and character. Either way, we discuss this in detail and give our take on the failings we see, how we can do it better, and ask some of those famous reflective questions of ours. We're starting at the base of the pyramid - the foundation - as we look to declutter the Human Component. We discuss what we can do to automate some decision making, create more opportunities for the next connection to take place, and how we can declutter some other things to make room for more of the human component in coaching, teaching, learning, and life. We may make this a two-parter since the Human Component matters above all else, but you'll just have to tune in next week to see what happens!

It's that time of year! Time to declutter and get rid of the fluff. We're going on a deep dive into the chats we did a few years ago and taking a look at how that's gone for us and for our EC Fam. This intro gives insight into why the #DeclutteringSzn is so important and what we can learn from just simply letting go of STUFF that is holding us back from being our best selves as coaches, leaders, educators, and humans.

It's almost July - you know what that means. "Exposure events," for athletes across the country in almost every sport. Why do we do this? What's the point? Is every kid in need of EXPOSURE? The easy answer is no - in fact, most of them will likely be exposed as not very good and it's not their fault. Why is the 98% doing the same thing as the 2%?

Are you a front runner or a competitor? How are we actually competing and what are we competing against? Who are we when we're at our most competitive? Can competition and empathy go together?

We talked about that and more on this episode. We are hopeful this episode, perhaps above all others, reframes your definition of what being competitive is and how you can harness the power of competition to aid in your approach to coaching, teaching, learning, and life.

We all have a boss. Even our boss has a boss and their boss has one too. If you're Peter from Office Space, you have 8 bosses.

That means we all have to manage up. And, if we're lucky enough to have someone that reports to us, we're also being managed up. So how do we do this well?

This is something that we really don't talk about as a coaching and teaching community - most PD is about top down leadership and managing in the traditional sense. But then we wonder - why do we constantly feel at odds with our admin or the admin feel like we don't get it...or assistant coaches and head coaches are butting heads over a lack of making the next connection. This is as much of a human component episode as any you'll hear from us - and there's a question at the end we need YOUR help with answering!

This week, we welcome the man himself, BRIAN MCCORMICK to the pod! Yes, we broke our "no guests," rule - but hey, it's Brian. This isn't your typical "talk to us about SABA," interview. Brian is our business partner with Playmakers League, and we dive deep into the timelines behind the league, why he created it, and what the future holds after our just-announced partnership with Jewell Loyd. This is a great conversation with awesome vibes, and you'll want to tune in for the whole thing. You can become a Playmakers League Operator by visiting www.playmakersleague.com and clicking in the top right on the "Prospective Operator Form."Link to Brian's Amazon store: https://www.amazon.com/stores/Brian-McCormick/author/B00PKIKVW4Buy Brian's books on Lulu: https://www.lulu.com/spotlight/brianmccormickDrop us a DM at any of the three of our Twitter handles, reach out via email at admin@essential-coaching.net or coach@playmakersleague.com. Is this a Part II? Maybe. We dive deep into the idea behind how we are evaluating and developing skill, particularly through the lens of recruiting. There's some transfer portal talk, some food for thought on creating player development plans, and being really intentional with how that is communicated. This is not just for basketball coaches - we talk about ALL sports in this episode and how equally affected they are by these conundrums. Enjoy the conversation!

What is skill? What is technique? Can they co-exist? SHOULD THEY co-exist? The guys dive deep into this topic with stories, thoughts, philosophies, and of course - plenty of questions for you to chew on. Environment in: Technique Out. Skill is anything that can be improved with contextual practice. How do we develop these things?

Ahhh, the age old debate of Coaches v. Trainers. What if we told you it can be coaches AND trainers...and athletes...and parents. In this episode, we give practice, real strategies to use to end the debate and start working together for the kids! None of the groups are 100% right, or 100% good or bad - we have to be able to STITCH OUR NICHE within this conversation for the betterment of the athletes. In this episode, we give our takes on WHY teams are winning and continue to win, share some personal anecdotes of our interactions with some of the coaches still left in the tournament, and what we believe the common threads are among the teams continuing on in the NCAA tournament. This is a timeless episode, as the message isn't just about March, it's about how to THRIVE in March.

In this episode, the guys just take the time to check on each other and talk through how they're feeling at the end of their seasons. This is a vulnerable episode where we chat about our lives, what's been going on, and offer some practical questions and solutions to the feelings and emotions at the end of a season.

In the first of this two part series, we tackle end of  year evaluations and whether we should even do them or not! Is there a better way, and can we RACA our way through understanding what an aligned evaluative process looks like. Back with our vision roadblocks series with #5, Vision Alignment. We've been building to this episode for a while and with good reason - it is certainly the pinnacle of the roadblocks as without alignment, the wheels will most certainly fall off. Kyle and Aseem give examples and stories from their careers, and delve deep into the psyche change that can happen when alignment is not the mission. Further, there is significant discussion on player development in an aligned program v. in a misaligned program, which can then work to get us further on or off track. A great conversation that is made greater by you interacting! Shoot us a DM or an email to let us know what you think.

In this episode, the guys tackle a pretty reflective question for coaches: what are you afraid of? Both Kyle & Aseem share their own insecurities as coaches, as well as ask questions of the listening audience to help them think through their own fears about performance, coaching, and more. This episode is based in part on a Twitter thread Kyle put out on February 21, 2023. That thread can be found here: https://twitter.com/coachk424/status/1628061196363472898?s=46&t=dA0PPbKmLayVT77VVZrErA .

In this episode, the guys jump into the idea of "fun" in the sport experience being taboo and interfering with "focus." The entire idea of this episode stems from this tweet: https://twitter.com/Rastogi_Aseem/status/1499495420808077313 and the video underneath of the Phoenix Suns enjoying their warmups together as a team singing and dancing to NBA Youngboy's "Nevada."

Part II is more geared toward the on-court/field experience and how we can inject fun into player development, and making the sport experience the "cool" thing to do. Aseem shares stories from his time taking over failing programs and Kyle reflects on the lack of fun while winning - something that most people would trade their current experience for in a heartbeat.

In episode 27, the guys talk about so-called "Experts" and what they do and don't bring to the table. Aseem gives his definition of what an expert COULD be, and and Kyle deep dives being an engaged learner to become an expert yourself. The point of today's episode is to help coaches differentiate the snake oil salespeople from actual experts who can walk the journey with them as they seek knowledge and solutions to problems in their OWN context.

Sports parents. Maybe it gives you flashbacks of the car ride, or meetings, or complaints. Well, we're here to tell you, as two guys who have dealt with this and it did not end well, that there is a way to make your team parents allies instead of enemies. Based on a blog on our website, we go through five questions parents can and should ask their athletes, and that coaches can use as a guide to ensuring that there is alignment between the experience we say we're providing and the one the athlete is receiving. All that and more on this episode of Essential Coaching Conversations.

Go back and listen to the Vision Roadblocks episodes if you haven't already!

In this week's episode, we add another installment to our Vision Roadblock series and tackle vision attainability. Who is the vision laid out for - the best players or all the players? How do we internalize teaching that and creating equitable spaces to activate the engaged ownership (part III)? This conversation goes DEEP into engagement, motivation, and helping ALL stakeholders feel as if your vision, both on and off the playing surface AND in the immediate, is achievable where THEY are and where THEY might want to go.

In the "final" episode in our practice series (for now...) we discuss turning over those stones from part III. What are coaches practicing - things like emotional regulation, body language, decision making, alignment to style of play and feedback, joy and creativity, etc. Are YOU developing in practice? What are coaches earning in practice - the players are earning their playing time, but you are earning their trust. All that and more on this episode of ECC.

Talkin' About Practice (Part I)  | Talkin' About Practice (Part II)

Part III of our series unpacking all things practice. In this particular part, the guys differentiate what the coach is supposed to be developing in their own craft and how to manage competitive congruence in practice. We also talk about trust and developing ALL your players, not just the select few that might play a lot. Can't make promises to players like, "you earn your playing time in practice," and then not have systems by which to reflect on those things. Aseem breaks down his way of reflecting after practices as well as what he did as a head coach to ensure that practices remained the proving ground for playing time. All that and more!

Last week, we hit Vision Roadblocks as a whole. This week, go inch wide, mile deep on MAKING THE NEXT CONNECTION. The lack of making the next connection is likely the thing that is standing in your way of making your vision a reality. This week, we introduce the concept of "VISION ROADBLOCKS," which was and continues to be the impetus for our work in Essential Coaching. The guys tried really hard not to dive too deep into any of the six as the plan is to release six episodes over the next few months, one about each roadblock. The conversation  centers around how to recognize these roadblocks and how to "add aces" to your deck as a coach, educator, or really anyone and overcome what might stand in our way as we navigate coaching, teaching, leading, and life.

As a preview, the roadblocks we discuss are:

  • Making the next connection (or lack thereof)
  • Alignment of Vision
  • Attainability of Vision
  • Vision Stability
  • Engaged Investment

The guys are back this week to chat about all things TEACHING and lessons learned from being classroom teachers who also coach. Somewhat a continuation of the levels conversation, the guys get into a series of questions to ask about teaching and coaching, how we can mirror and design learning environments to that of the classroom, and the difference between what SOME coaches believe to be teaching and what teaching actually is. You don't want to miss this episode - are you an environment designer or a coach?

In this episode, we take a look at the coachspeak narrative of "body language screams," and why that is harmful to our profession and our athletes. There are several moments in the episode where we ask you, as a listener, to pause and reflect about what we're talking about and we hope that you will share what your reflections were. We deep dive into the recruiting process and how that manifests itself once players are already on campus. We also have a discussion and ask key questions about the youth sports, particularly high school, process and how body language has become weaponized over the last decade as a decider of playing time, influence, and treatment in the midst of a power dynamic that the athlete cannot overcome. Overall, this discussion is based solely around the idea that body language is important, but not nearly as important as it's been made out to be.

In this episode, the guys dive deep into how we would rethink an assistant coach search. This idea was stemmed by a member of our EC Community coming to us asking about how they could do it differently, and what that process could look like. Get your notebooks ready for the questions we ask, as they will make you think about why we hire the way we do, what the function of an assistant coach is in 2022, and how we can leverage attitude over aptitude to create the best chance for congruence in our programs.
