It’s not easy to get back on the saddle after a setback. I’m rarely “instagram ready”, and I prefer to talk about issues with clarity and openness. Sharing a story sometimes helps me, but some other artists prefer a more curated approach to their online presence. Let’s think about the conversations we’ve had on this podcast. Why are there talkative tiger-lilies, but also some bashful violets?

Fiber Arts make their debut on this episode of Six Impossible Things, and it is thanks to Katherine McClelland.
Originally from Maine, she now lives and works in Massachusetts. She is a dedicated artist who uses wool as her chosen medium.

Happy Year of the Rabbit! Don't be late to the celebrations!
Are you anxious like Alice's white bunny, or calm and collected like the Chinese zodiac rabbit?
If you fall in the first category, what are you to do when you spend your time running around and barely getting through the day?

We all know that anything is possible in a dream. You can fly among the clouds and travel to amazing destinations in mere seconds. Past, present, and future become one during sleep.
In this episode, let’s look at The Garden of Earthly Delights by Bosch. This incredibly unique artwork will help us make connections between dreams and artistic inspiration.
The Garden of Earthly Delights is representative of the power of dreams, or rather nightmares. It is a highly complex artwork in content as well as appearance. Many theorize that Bosch was disturbed by visions of the underworld and that his religious fervor translated into frightening dreams. These are the images we see in the painting, and they are baffling and shocking to this day.
With this triptych, Bosch erased the boundaries between dreams and imagination. It is hard to say where dreams end, and the painter’s inventiveness starts.

Likes and dislikes appear to be arbitrary. Sometimes, we don’t really know why we like what we like. Our reactions are visceral and difficult to untangle.
What are the factors that determine our individual taste? Is there such a thing as unadulterated choice?

One last episode. The very last one for 2022. And it is full of gratitude, twists and new adventures.
In this episode I briefly look back to recognize the progress made so far. Focusing on progress always makes me feel better. Even if I can still remember all the scraped knees and ugly crying sessions, it makes all of it feel worthwhile!
I also look forward into 2023. There are some changes afoot, and that is also a good thing. None of them are "resolutions" (I don't do those), but they are projects and ideas that will continue to give meaning to my day to day.
It is a coping strategy I have used since I was very young: I have an imaginary treasure chest where I put all my creative ideas and I use them as antidotes against the unpleasant things that happen along the way. One by one, I take them out and use them as needed. It turns out I was doing my own creative "challenges" before they were even a thing!
I hope to see you in the new year. I can't promise impeccably crafted episodes with all the bells and whistles of an uber professional podcast, but I can guarantee you realness. If you can handle that, together we will find out what Wonderland has in store for us.
Take care.

Little Mr. Dormouse can't help but falling asleep. How do we keep him engaged in the conversation? In Alice in Wonderland, he gets yelled at a lot. I don't think that's the best way at all!
He reminds me of inspiration...it tends to go offline when you least expect it. It's like someone hit the snooze button in the creative part of your brain.
What do I do to keep things flowing, you might ask? There are many different strategies, but I share a few with you that I find reliable and perhaps a bit quirky.
These behaviors work most of the time, but sometimes you need to shake creativity by the lapels and hope that it stays with you until you're finished.
Mr. Dormouse tells a riveting tale (whenever he's awake), so let's keep him going! Sit him on your shoulder and keep listening. He'll help you come up with the best ideas for your work!
Once you're done, you can join him for a little nap...We all need rest too!

I make no secret of my predilection for Oscar Wilde. His wit and command of language are superb. He coined one of my favorite quotes: “The cynic knows the price of everything and the value of nothing.” He was so right!
Today, as we sit down to a very confusing cup of tea, we think about values. What are they? How do they help us on the creative journey?
Alice will follow her heart and so should we! The personal values we hold dear will help us align our behavior with what truly matters to us. Whether you must make difficult decisions or just trivial choices, your value system is always there pointing you in the direction of your North Star.
Listen to your heart, and become the person you are meant to be.

Are you open to sudden waves of inspiration? Do you lead with your heart while you create? If the answer is yes, you are probably familiar with intuition. It is a force to be reckoned with.
I know intuition by another name: duende. Duende is a capricious rascal that can suddenly put incredible ideas in your head. It appears when you least expect it, and it acts as a guide of sorts. It will whisper in your ear to try this or that. It will test your ability to go with the flow and act intuitively.
Saetas are religious songs inspired by angels. You don't need to believe in any one religion to see the beauty in that metaphor. Let me tell you how I became aware of those external, spiritual forces that sometimes play a role in the creative process. Call them what you will, but leave the door to your mind ajar so that they can find you.
The Cheshire cat in Alice in Wonderland is a conduit for duende. It is an unlikely source of guidance. Why did Carroll choose a cat? Perhaps because they are beings made of mystery and domesticity in equal parts.
Stay nimble. Be ready to intuitively capture that spark that will change the course of your creative practice. You can do it.

Kyleigh Wiedemann invites us to her world of unbearable cuteness.
With dedication and a keen eye for detail, Kyleigh started creating amigurumi inspired by a chance encounter. She has persevered month after month, improving her skills and showing the value of maintaining a beginner's mind. From the time she first picked up a crochet needle, no obstacle has been big enough to dissuade her from making her incredibly endearing dolls.

Patience doesn't come easy for some of us. Are you one of the fortunate people who can wait for things to run their course? I am not! I find it so hard!
However, Nature teaches us that sometimes we must wait to reap beauty and joy, and I have seen this process repeat in my garden season after season.
I am also learning to be more deliberate and patient through my creative practice. Patience is a skill that can be learned, and I try to exercise it by making small, detailed collages.
Let's unpack both patience and its twin sister, impatience. Both are made of different degrees of fear, worry and confidence. Once you get to know them (and yourself) they can become your friends in your pursuit of creative bliss.

Everyone gets stuck now and then. We like the way we do things and we're pretty averse to learning new ways of doing them. It's a trap! Do not fall for it!
To avoid becoming part of the "groundhog day gang", implement beginner's mind. It is a Zen Buddhist concept that will help you look at the world with a fresh and curious attitude.
If you don't have a hobby, no matter how modest or occasional, it's time you think about having fun with something completely new. Which one will it be? There are as many options as days of the year, but let's create a shortlist that will be our springboard into the world of handmade, creative crafts.

Anger is such a powerful emotion. It seems to be assembled out of many components: grief, frustration, fear, inadequacy...
What do we do when it breaches the surface? Where do we find relief for the need to lash out?
Creativity is a solid and safe way of diffusing anger. Making sense of your emotions through creation can help you regain composure and can strengthen your sense of self.
Alice pushes through her annoyance and grows a little each time. Not only because of the mysterious mushroom, but because the experiences allow her to understand herself a little bit better from the inside out. She puts her energy into forward movement, and acquires agency and determination. You go girl!

What a wonderful treat it is to chat with Emma Alvarez Gibson. All the way from the West Coast, in the city of angels, she is kind enough to spend time with us today. Her story begins like a nursery rhyme: “There once was a little girl who understood from a tender age that some things last forever.” As she grew, she continued to search for that timeless spark. She is the creator of A Brief Compendium of Cool, and even these days, still under the shadow of the Covid pandemic, she looks to the future with creative conviction. Join us for a relaxed conversation that will surely not be the last. Enjoy!

We are all human and thus, perfectly imperfect. In your creative journey you need to remember that this is a marathon and not a sprint. Take your time.
Just don't throw in the towel. You have so much to offer and, in time, you'll grow into the person you need to be.
If you doubt me, listen to my college experience as a new and very fragile transplant from another galaxy far, far away. It's an old story, but I will never forget how a handful of dismissive words tore a hole in my heart.
Don't worry, I recovered and I don't even remember his name. Be confident. Be yourself and don't let the wrong people mislead you or send you in a different direction. Stick to your artistic path come hell or high water.

There are people who will support you in everything that you do. They will help you through rough patches. They will give you selfless advice and assistance. Those people take after the Dodo bird in Wonderland, but they are as common in real life as the Dodo itself.
What shall we do when comments and advice are full of barbs and backhanded compliments? How can we answer the prying questions of the nosy caterpillar without getting annoyed?
Learn how to be vulnerable without letting others hurt you. Your path to Wonderland will be smoother and more enjoyable. It can be done if you remember three little words...

If you are not familiar with Alice in Wonderland, you might be confused by The Antipathies. It's a word made up by Lewis Carroll. It is the name of an imaginary place and it's a blend of "antipathy" and "antipodes". Alice utters it while falling down the well.
Here it denotes a new and unusual place. You've stepped into your imagination, and it is a pretty random place. How curious!
You'll notice that it's difficult to remain in that creative space: so many other things clamor for your attention. If you're finding it challenging to keep your wits about you, and distractions abound, I have a few suggestions for you...

Sarah Jerger is accomplished in many ways. She is creative by nature, and has diligently maintained an artistic practice of her own with dedication and a keen sense of purpose. Among other things, she is the creator of The Free Little Art Gallery in Essex, Vermont. She has dedicated a great deal of time and effort to bringing a sense of community to the local art scene. Thanks to her and her self-funded gallery project, hundreds of miniature art pieces have exchanged hands in the last year, touching the lives of people when they needed it most.

New York based artist Natali Bravo-Barbee joins us in conversation from her studio in Queens. The Argentinian born photographer has a unique take on sculptural installations, and she talks about her poignant exhibition Flores de Femicidio. She creates a landscape straight out of Wonderland, where breathtaking beauty hides a brutal message, and nothing is what it appears to be.
Enjoy a fascinating take on the use of cyanotype, as well as other insights about the challenges creatives face in the time of Covid.
