No one would have predicted that a group of kids from Cork and Lisdoonvarna would create this summer's biggest banger, and yet that's exactly what The Spark by The Kabin Crew and Lisdoonvarna Crew is. I was dying to learn more about where the song came from, and that led me to The Kabin, a not-for-profit 'music and creative hub' for kids and young people in a portacabin in Knocknaheeny in Cork City. Garry McCarthy is the project's founder, and he told me how it came to be and all about the brilliant work it's doing for young people, as well as how the kids are coping with their fame.

You may have heard people talking about this week's RTE Investigates documentary on the fact that many Irish people are still being forced to travel to access abortion services. The issues raised are really troubling, and it seems that many people weren't aware of the awful circumstances in which people still find themselves in around pregnancy in this country. This week I caught up with Annie Tidbury, Service Manager of the Abortion Support Network, a volunteer-run service which assists people in accessing abortion. Sadly, Ireland is still in the top two countries they hear from. We talked about why there are still barriers and what we can do to make change.

Once I began my research, though, I was blown away. Not only has she won a women's football All-Ireland with Dublin, she's also won the Six Nations with Ireland's Women's Rugby team. Aside from that, she's passionate about equality and mental health, all while being generous enough to share her own experience with mental illness in the hope that it might help someone else. This week's standalone interview is with drag queen, musician and HIV activist Veda. I've been admiring Veda's drag for a frankly shocking number of years now, but have been even more impressed by her work in HIV activism. Veda co-hosts Poz VIbe with fellow HIV activist Robbie Lawlor, 'a podcast for People Living With HIV, their friends, family and allies trying to create change and spread positive vibrations', and their activism has seen them travel the world. Veda's latest project is a short film about her life. Pregnant with a Drag Queen, is super camp and fun, and will air on Virgin Media One on Tuesday the 27th at 11pm, but you can also catch it on the player. I caught up with Veda this week to chat about the film, her life, her work, and what it was like to be young and gay in 90s Dublin.

No person has been suggested more for this podcast than Dr. Katriona O'Sullivan, so she immediately came to mind when I was considering who I'd like to speak to for these extended episodes over Christmas. Katriona is an award-winning professor whose memoir Poor was published this year and went on to recently win two Irish Book Awards.
Poor tells the story of Katriona's experience of growing up in poverty with two addicted parents. She writes in an open and unflinching manner about the challenges she faced, the power of self-belief and also offers real insight into how society can best support people who are at a disadvantage from the get-go.
While Katriona experienced many challenges I did not, there are some parallels between our early childhoods which made reading her book a profound experience for me, and also fed into this episode which is less of an interview and more of a conversation. I hope you'll forgive my tears.

Monica Heisey's year began with the January publication of Really Good, Actually, her debut novel, and finished with the launch of Smothered, a television series she co-created and wrote.
Really Good, Actually was loved by both critics and readers thanks to its sharp writing and frighteningly accurate portrayal of life in the immediate aftermath of a big break-up. It also gives great insight into what it's like to get a divorce when your friends have barely entered the serious relationship space.
Smothered is a six-part romantic comedy which has also been a hit with the critics, and me, tbh. It's smart and charming and filled with great jokes and brilliant performances. I'm waiting for the series two announcement.
In this episode, Monica and I discuss these projects and also the challenge of having a great professional year when it's not going so well in your personal life.

I felt like it was important to take some time to talk about Sinead O'Connor as there was no podcast last week. I've loved reading Una Mullally's writing about Sinead in the Irish Times over the years along with her recent piece for the New York Times, so was grateful she was up for chatting. This is the first of what I hope will be occasional bonus episodes under the 'sit down' umbrella. These will be longer conversations to facilitate the sharing of experience, so that we might all benefit. This episode features Amy White and Katie Hamilton, two sisters from Dublin. After having a hysterectomy at 25 as part of treatment for cervical cancer, Amy's options were limited when it came to having children. After having two children herself, Katie, Amy's sister, felt able to put herself forward as a surrogate. They thought that was the hard bit sorted, but as it turned out, the path to surrogacy in this country does not run smooth. This open and frank discussion sheds a real light on the need for proper legislation when it comes to women's health and surrogacy in Ireland.
