Hamad's journey is nothing short of inspiring. Starting with a Bachelor's in Neuroscience, his path took a transformative turn when he volunteered with early-stage dementia patients. Here, he realised the traditional biomedical approach often falls short of addressing patients' holistic needs. This experience sparked his passion for social prescribing—a healthcare approach focusing on what truly matters to patients beyond their medical symptoms.

In this episode of Brand New Dr., Hamad shares how he is at the forefront of an exciting movement reimagining healthcare by addressing the symptoms and the root social and economic factors that impact patient health.

We explore the essence of social prescribing, exploring how it goes far beyond linking patients to community resources. Hamad explains how this approach shifts the focus from "What’s the matter with you?" to "What matters to you?"—a powerful reorientation emphasising the patient’s voice and needs in their care journey. He also tackles the paradox of modern medicine, where despite advancements in treatment, healthcare systems are struggling to keep pace with rising demand, and adverse drug reactions are contributing to an alarming rate of hospitalisations.

Hamad debunks common myths about social prescribing, stressing that it’s not about prescribing cycling or other one-size-fits-all solutions. Instead, it's about understanding and addressing the complex socio-political factors that affect health. He passionately argues for the need to empower patients today while acknowledging the systemic issues that must be addressed for long-term change.

Years ago, I faced the harsh dilemma of leaving a clinical career I'd trained for and embraced a new path as a healthcare graphic designer and brand strategist. That transition was anything but easy, riddled with feelings of guilt and doubts of selfishness.

I also share insights on identifying and applying your values to your career decisions. Sharing from my transition, I address the notion of selfishness when contemplating leaving a clinical career and how your values can clear up this confusion.

Guiding you through the reconsideration process, I share my strategies to utilise your values for making optimal decisions. This episode urges you to ask the empowering question, "Am I making the best choice for me?" rather than dwelling on the guilt-ridden, "Am I being selfish?".

If you wanted to make to make a change in the world, what's the first thing you would ask yourself? The question 'how do I begin?' is obvious, but the answer is less so. If you have a talent, passion or interest outside of medicine or dentistry, you might think you have to choose one or the other, but my first guest Chidiebere Ibe is living testament that your unique combination of gifts can change everything. We sat down to talk about how to use your gifts to find your purpose and build confidence in the face of adversity.

Chidi's illustrations went viral in December last year and he’s since been featured in major news outlets including Forbes and CNN and his work is set to be published around the world.

There is a distinct lack of racial diversity in medical illustrations that has been the norm for so long. So if you haven’t seen it yet, you can imagine the eye opening effect of a medical illustration of a black foetus in black mother’s womb.

His is a story of perseverance and belief in a purpose greater than himself that has touched lives all around the world. He applied for medical school 5 times and when he finally got into Kyiv Medical Univerisity, he crowd funded enough money to be able to attend.

This episode was recorded before the recent events of the war crisis in Ukraine - thankfully Chidi was able to get home to Nigeria.

It was amazing for me to delve into Chidi’s thoughts on purpose and passion and I’m so excited to share this fascinating conversation with you

It is a time of great uncertainty for African medical students studying in Ukraine like Chidi, many of whom face discrimination when trying to access scholarships and funds afforded to other Ukrainian students. How many times have you had an idea but not gone through with it because you worried about what other people would think?

I sat down with Dr Yewande Oduwole to share personal experiences of the fear of judgement and how to stop it from holding you back.

Yewande got a lot of experience with this when she started her Youtube and Instagram sharing her experience as a dental student and teaching others how to get into dental school. Despite the naysayers she grew her following and now only 2 years after qualifying has become well-known for her passion for dental education.

She’s won a number of awards including FGDP Dental Student of the Year in 2020 and shared during our talk that she had just been listed in the top 50 most influential people in dentistry - being the second black female to make it.

But none of this would have happened if she had given in to what other people thought. So doesn’t it make you wonder, what could you achieve if it wasn’t for fear?

We’re going to deep dive into mindset and practical tips for overcoming what I believe is the biggest block to success, fear.
